In a statement released Jan. 18, the Archdiocese of Chicago announced that as part of its Renew My Church initiative, four parishes in Proviso Township will be consolidated, with one facing closure within a year.

In the statement, Archdiocese officials said that they’ve been meeting with parish leaders in what’s called the 290 Corridor “to discuss the future church, parish and school structures for their respective areas.”

on Jan. 18.

The annual Lindop School Spelling Bee was divided into two sections, with one held for students in grades first through fourth.

The winner of this round of competition, fourth-grader Kordae Walker, went on to compete in a second round against students in the fifth through eighth grades.

Jax, Broadview Police K9, awarded ‘Hero’ grant Jax, the Broadview Police Department’s K9 dog, was recently the recipient of a grant’s that given to departments across the country.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., a nonprofit based in East Taunton, Mass. — “whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States,” according to a release — announced this month that the Broadview Police Department’s K9 unit was among a handful across the country to receive the organization’s “Healthcare for K9 Heroes” grant.

The grant program covers “the annual medical reimbursement insurance policy, administered by Trupanion, will cover illnesses, injuries — including those sustained in the line of duty — diagnostic

testing and therapies. The plan allows the freedom to use any licensed veterinarian, specialty center, or emergency hospital in the United States, and Puerto Rico.”

Back in 2016, Jax received a bullet- and stab-proof vest with the help of a $1,050 donation from Vested Interest, according to a statement that Broadview Police posted to Facebook that year. The vests are valued at between $1,795 and $2,234. Jax’s vest was sponsored by the late Otto W. Vollenweider of Bolingbrook, police stated.

Vested Interest was established in 2009 “to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially lifesaving body armor for their four-legged K9 officers,” according to the 2016 statement.

OUT and ABOUT Saturday snow brings out compassionate young people Saturday’s snow storm dumped up to 9 inches on the Chicago area, halting plans and barricading some people in their homes. The weather, however, was gleefully anticipated by Bellwood resident Connie Riales, who used the snow fall on Jan. 19 to launch her new community service initiative.

As part of Riales’ program, which she established late last year, 8th graders at Roosevelt Junior High School in Bellwood District 88 can accumulate community service hours, which are necessary for them to graduate, by helping shovel snow outside the homes of area senior citizens.

During an interview in December, Riales said that D88 officials have warmly embraced her idea, so much so that the district’s superintendent, Mark Holder, joined the effort.

In a Facebook statement, Riales, who is a member of the Maywood Senior Club Advisory Board and a Bellwood Public Library trustee, said that D88’s transportation director, Tyreese

Stafford, and Luigi Miguel Villaviza Cabantog, a community activist and Proviso West graduate, also helped the young people shovel.

“Seniors shouldn’t have to be alone,” Riales, a senior herself, said back in December. “They’ve worked hard all their lives and they shouldn’t worry about being snowed in and [not being able to] pay someone to get them out.”

Pritzker signs gun dealer bill into law

The measure requires gun dealers to safely store firearms, among other requirements

A bill previously vetoed by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner to more tightly regulate gun dealers in the state of Illinois was signed Jan. 17 by newly inaugurated Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

The bill, sponsored by Oak Park state Sen. Don Harmon, imposes a number of new regulations that Harmon said is a “big victory” for gun control advocates. State Rep. Kathleen Willis (77th), whose district includes Melrose Park, sponsored the measure in the House.

The new law requires gun dealers to safely store firearms, make copies of firearm owner identification card or other identification and attach them to each gun sale, make employees undergo annual training for gun sales and open their businesses for inspection by state, federal and local law enforcement officials.

Harmon said in a telephone interview that he first proposed the legislation 16 years ago.

“I wonder how many lives could have been saved if it had been signed earlier,” he said.

Harmon said that 40 percent of guns recovered from crime scenes in Chicago are traced to Illinois gun dealers, and almost half of those are traced to a handful of dealers in suburban Cook County.

“This bill will give local law enforcement officials the tools to better assess where those guns are coming from and interact with dealers selling so many guns being used in crimes,” Harmon told Wednesday

A similar measure was vetoed in March of 2018 by Rauner.

Family looking for Maywood man who went missing Jan. 11 Christopher Guadarrama is schizophrenic, family says

Family and friends of a mentally disabled Maywood man who has been missing for four days are asking community members to help locate him.

Christopher Guadarrama, 25, was last seen at his home at 619 N. 5th Ave. in Maywood.

Family members said that they reported him missing to Maywood Police at around midnight on Jan. 11.

When contacted Tuesday afternoon, Maywood police said that Guadarrama was not reported to be a clear and present danger to himself or the public. They said that a detective with the Cook County Sheriff’s office had encountered the 25-year-old twice in a nearby forest preserve.

The latest sighting of Guadarrama was made by county law enforcement authorities on Jan. 14, Maywood Police said, adding that

those authorities released Guadarrama after noticing he was an adult and did not appear in danger.

But during a followup interview on Jan. 16, Maywood police said that the initial report of two Guadarrama sightings turned out to be false.

“We did a name check and it turns out that Forest Preserve Police ran his name unbeknownst to us,” said Maywood Det. Luis Vargas. “The family actually went to the Forest Preserve Police Department to inquire about their son. When the Forest Preserve Police ran the name, we were under the assumption that they spotted him, since on our end them running his name indicates

they made contact with him.”

“He left without his backpack, cell phone or his medication, which he always has with him whenever he goes, anywhere,” said the man’s sister, Maria Guadarrama, during an interview on Jan. 15.

Guadarrama has schizophrenia, she said, and was last seen wearing a black hoodie, blue jeans and gray gym shoes.

Maria said that her brother is Hispanic, 5’6 inches tall and around 170 pounds. He also has a long beard.

She said that this is the first time he’s gone missing.

“He doesn’t talk to anybody,” Maria said.

“He always covers his mouth. He makes a lot of movement and sounds with his mouth.”

Relatives said that Christopher frequents the Melrose Park area and the CTA Green Line station, near Harlem and North Ave., in Oak Park. Relatives said he also frequents the Back of the Yards neighborhood in Chicago.

Vargas said that some relatives of Guadarrama who live in Chicago said that he had been spotted in the neighborhood two days ago.

“We’re doing everything on our behalf to find him,” Vargas said. “We’re calling and going to hospitals, he has mental issues. We’ve had missing person posters printed that we’re distributing. We’re doing everything we can.”

Maria said that if anyone has information on her brother’s whereabouts, they can call her mother, Stella, at (773) 397-1403.

The village of Maywood recently acquired a new aerial ladder truck for the Maywood Fire Department, which replaces the one it decommissioned back in September. The old one had been operational since 1997 and had a cracked frame, Fire Chief Craig Bronaugh said.

The Board of Trustees voted unanimously during a meeting on Nov. 20, 2018, on a resolution approving a 48-month leasepurchase agreement with Wells Fargo in the amount of $855,893, at a rate of interest of 4.6 percent. Trustees Henderson Yarbrough and Ron Rivers were absent.

In all, the village would pay around $940,000 over 48 months. The village made a $15,000 advance payment for the truck.

In September, Bronaugh said that the ladder truck features lighting equipment during night-time operations and an emergency generator in case an additional power source is needed at the scene of an emergency, among many others.

Treat your February SNAP benefits like they’re your last, state says Residents of Illinois who rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits will receive their February benefits early, in January, but state officials said recipients should be prudent when dispensing with the needed assistance.

With the federal shutdown nearing a month and no resolution in sight, state officials are warning SNAP recipients to spend those benefits wisely.

“The partial federal government shutdown will leave the United States Department of Agriculture without the authority to spend money next month,” noted a report by the Illinois News Network.

Department Of Human Services Secretary James Dimas told INN that people should understand “this is early, not extra.

“These benefits have to last them through the end of February. And I think they can appreciate that Illinois is no place to be hungry at the end of February. So they need

D209 cuts ribbon on newly renovated Proviso West field house Proviso Township High Schools District 209 officials, along with community leaders, students, coaches and district staffers, were on hand on Jan. 15 to cut the ribbon on the newly renovated Proviso West Field House.

In September, the D209 board allocated $708,605 to hire Kiefer USA, an athletic surface design and installation company based in Lindenhurst, Ill., to overhaul the field house, one of the largest in the state.

The renovations include replacement of of the ceiling and deck, a complete replacement of the track and new wall graphics that feature new school logos, among other improvements.

“The new track will allow the [D209 track and field] teams to raise the level of competitiveness, enhance scholarship opportunities, and take full advantage of one of the few high school field houses in the Midwest that can seat over 700 spectators,” according to a statement the district released Friday.

In the statement, D209 Supt. Jesse Rodriguez said that the new track rises to the level of the track and field teams’ recent performance.

“Year after year our track teams have not only met but exceeded their goals, which include once again competing at the state and national levels,” Rodriguez said.

Nia Abdullah, the school’s principal, said that she was thrilled “that our 4 x 400 state champions now have a track they can brag about.”

Steve Lawrence, a track and field assistance coach at Proviso East, which also competes in the West field house, lauded the renovations.

“I’ve been involved in Proviso over 40 years and the opportunity to have this completed in less than five months shows tremendous leadership and passion for our students,” he said. “Our students not only have equal facilities as everyone else in our conference, but we actually have a state-ofthe-art facility at Proviso.”

Tony Brazouski, the district’s assistant superintendent of human resource, athletics and safety, said that the district “is committed to equity, excellence and empowerment, with equity being number one.”

Maywood trustee race set after two candidates survive objections The race for three open seats on the Maywood Board of Trustees is set after objections to the petition signatures of two candidates were withdrawn during a local electoral board hearing on Jan. 16.

During the hearing, Luther Spence, the attorney for the objector, Alonzo Hutton, said that Hutton had decided to withdraw his objections to the petition signatures

of Nathaniel George Booker and Arnettra Barber-Burnside. Spence is also a candidate for village trustee.

The three members of the electoral board — Maywood Mayor Edwenna Perkins, Village Clerk Viola Mims and Trustee Henderson Yarbrough — voted unanimously on both motions to withdraw Hutton’s objections against each candidate.

The decision means that the race for three open seats on the Maywood board is pretty much set in stone. Eleven trustee candidates will be on the ballot on Election Day, April 2.

State Rep. La Shawn Ford (8th) told INN that recipients “need to not blow through those benefits quickly, because there won’t be any more coming next month.”

So far, the USDA has no plan in place to pay for the two million Illinois residents who rely on SNAP benefits to get them, INN reported.

The Westchester Food Pantry announced on Jan. 18 that it will serve federal workers who have been furloughed during the shutdown, which is now the longest in the nation’s history.

“Workers must show a valid federal ID or their last pay stub from their respective government agency,” food pantry officials said. “We are waiving our residency requirement for those furloughed workers during this time.”

Logistics company leases Melrose Park building in blockbuster O’Hare deal A logistics company based in Ohio is planning to turn a nearly 350,000-square foot industrial building in Melrose Park into a distribution center, according to a statement released by Transwestern, the company that brokered the lease, in the American Journal of Transportation.

Transwestern announced on Jan. 11 that it had “brokered a 343,410-square-foot industrial building lease for ODW Logistics Inc. at 5300 Proviso Drive in Melrose Park,” the report notes. “Senior Vice President John Joyce, CCIM, represented the landlord, TSP Melrose Park LLC in the deal.”

According to a report in Bisnow, the new lease starts in September 2020. ODW Logistics, a third-party provider of salt and salt-based products, stands to benefit from the property’s unique location and characteristics.

Those include “railway access and [the fact that it is] cross-docked with 84 truck-level docks, 17 trailer positions, 10 rail doors, 120 car parking spaces, two air freight doors and 30,000 square feet of office space,” AJOT notes.

“It provides proximity to Interstates 290, 294 and 88. The property is also a 15-minute drive from the south cargo entrance of Chicago O’Hare International Airport.”

“This is one of the largest deals completed in the O’Hare submarket this year in terms of square feet,” stated Sandy McDonald, Transwestern’s director of market research – Midwest.

“Based on current market conditions, we expect the 1.1 million square feet of speculative space delivered in [third quarter] will soon be absorbed,” she said. “However, second-generation space still meets user demand because of favorable economics that tenants can enjoy.”

Catholic churches, changing parishioner demographics and a financial burden that doesn’t lessen even as the number of parishioners declines.

“The goal of Renew My Church is to make our parishes more vital and more sustainable,” Cardinal Cupich said in a 2017 letter explaining the parish grouping process.

According to documents released by the archdiocese in 2017, total mass attendance at the four parishes in the 290 Corridor grouping declined by 27 percent from 1998 to 2018, going from nearly 4,000 to roughly 2,900.

In addition, the Hispanic population within the 290 Corridor’s service area has increased by 30 percent since 2000 while the white and black populations have decreased by 17 percent and 11 percent, respectively.

In 2017, archdiocese officials explained, approximately 37 percent of mass attendees across the four parishes attended masses facilitated in Spanish.

Meanwhile, all of the parishes except for St. Domitilla had operating deficits in the 2017 fiscal year, archdiocese officials said.

Combined, the annual operating revenue of the four parishes in 2017 was around $1.5 million — “twice the minimum operating revenue of

After meeting with church leaders and looking at their recommendations, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, the archbishop of Chicago, decided that Sacred Heart Parish and St. Eulalia Parish “will unite to form one new parish with both churches remaining active worship sites of the new parish.”

Sacred Heart School, the archdiocese stated, “will continue in its current structure as a ministry of the new parish.”

Meanwhile, St. Domitilla Parish and St. Simeon Parish, the archdiocese explained, will unite to form a single new parish, with St. Domitilla serving as the church for the newly constituted parish. St. Simeon Church will close no later than June 30, 2020.

“Over the next few months, the archdiocese will work with the faith communities of each parish to ensure an orderly and smooth transition to the new structures and the archdiocese’s Priest Placement Board will work with the communities to identify pastors to lead the new parishes,” the archdiocese explained in the statement.

A tournament fit for a King Dorothy Gaters’ MLK Dream Classic features racial, socioeconomic diversity

For the past 18 years, girls and boys basketball teams from public and private high schools all across Illinois have trekked to Marshall High School in Chicago for the MLK Dream Classic tournament.

The tournament is the brain-child of Maywood resident and Marshall High School’s Hall of Fame coach, Dorothy Gaters, who said that she wanted to create something that would honor the legacy of Martin Luther King.

She also wanted to provide a platform on which her players and players from other schools might catch the eye of college recruiters, and bring together communities that might otherwise never cross paths.

The three-day tournament, which takes place from Jan. 19 through Jan. 21, overlaps each year with Martin Luther King Day. The tournament’s 2019 sponsors included Nike. Last spring, Gaters starred in one of the company’s ads.

This year’s lineup included teams from Proviso East and Proviso West, along with teams from Chicago’s West Side, parts of downstate Illinois and even neighboring states.

Players came from as far east as Michigan City, Ind. and as far north as Milwaukee.

During an interview a day before the tournament kicked off, Gaters avoided singling out any team in particular,

saying that many teams had great players.

“We just have a lot of really good teams, both on the boys and girls side,” she said.

“We have girls’ top teams from Indiana.”

Gaters said that she appreciated the sheer diversity of the tournament, which, she felt, was a fitting way to honor King’s legacy.

“This is a very diverse tournament,” she said. “We have a private school, we have suburban schools, we have public schools.

It’s truly diverse.”

While many teams already had players signed to top schools like Notre Dame and Harvard, none of Gaters’ players have been signed yet.

“We hope that, as the byproduct of this tournament, coaches will come out and see the tremendous amount of talent that’s going to be displayed and hopefully our kids will get the attention and scholarships,” she said.

Gaters added that she hopes the tournament will have a positive impact on area young people, in general.

“We want them to have sense of direction,” Gaters said. “[King and other civil rights activists] gave their lives so that young people can live a better lives. Hopefully, we can get some of the kids to redirect their energy into more positive goals.”

“Our students have been working very hard spelling various lists,” said Emily Rubenstein, one of the co-chairs of the Lindop spelling bee. The other co-chairs are Martha Kowalczyk and Rachelle Wilson.

“They competed in classroom spelling bees and the winners of each class then participated in the school-wide spelling bee,” she said, before emphasizing the importance of spelling to students’ overall academic experience.

“A good speller is a good reader and writer,” she said. “Spelling is a life skill that will help students in language and communication as they grow.”

District 89 spelling champs announced Maywood-Melrose Park-Broadview Elementary Schools District 89 held their annual district-wide spelling bee on Jan. 18. Trisha Truong, an 8th-grader at Stevenson Middle School, in Melrose Park, won the tournament and will advance to Western Springs.

Her winning word was narcissistic.

The Bee lasted 11 rounds. Shantiah Watt, an 8th-grader at Stevenson Middle School, took second place while Brittany Ramirez, an 8th-grader at Irving Middle School in Maywood, took third.

Pace wraps up study ‘Pulse’ route for Harlem Avenue Implementation still years away, but is a priority

Harlem Avenue was one of seven proposed Pulse corridors deemed “near-term priorities.” Other near-term priority corridors include Cermak Road from the 54th Avenue Pink Line station to Yorktown Center and Roosevelt Road from the Forest Park Blue Line terminal to Oakbrook Center.

Another 28 corridors in the greater Chicago area are considered mid- or long-term priorities by Pace.

That route was supposed to have started in 2018, but the project has faced a variety of delays, including permitting delays triggered by an unexpected need to move a water main. Getting the first route up and running has been a learning experience, said Pace’s media relations manager, Maggie Daly Skogsbakken.

“With the first line there was a lot of leg work that’s been done that will expedite the others,” Skogsbakken said. “We’re hitting our momentum on this program.”

The one new wrinkle in implementing the Harlem Avenue corridor route is that it involves so many municipalities. The Milwaukee Avenue Pulse route involved just two.

This new line includes Elmwood Park, River Forest, Oak Park, Forest Park, Berwyn, North Riverside, Riverside, Stickney, Lyons, Forest View, Summit, Chicago, Bedford Park and Bridgeview.

“That will add time, because of the public outreach we like to do,” said Skogsbakken.

The completed study has also identified high-priority locations for Pulse stations along Harlem Avenue. Those locations include North Avenue, Circle Avenue/South Boulevard. Madison Street, the Eisenhower Expressway, Roosevelt Road, Cermak Road, the BNSF rail corridor, Ogden Avenue, 63rd Street and 71st Street.

Medium-priority locations include Division Street, Chicago Avenue, 16th Street, 47th Street and Archer Avenue. Low-priority locations are Longcommon Road, 41st Street and the Stevenson Expressway.

Other recommendations for areas near station locations include intersection enhancements such as high-visibility crosswalks, construction of pedestrian refuge islands, curb extensions to shorten crosswalks and the introduction of short “bus only” lanes.

The Maywood Village Trustee Candidates Forum will take place on Feb. 23, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., at Second Baptist Church, 436 S. 13th Ave. in Maywood.

Why I’m running for village trustee?

My passion for service I’m Nathaniel George Booker and I’m running for village trustee to address Maywood’s issues from the root in the April 2, 2019 election.

I believe that Maywood belongs to the people. We need to get to a place where the government works for us and with us. That means property tax reform, commercial corridor revitalization and conversations that serve our community. That also means creating a Maywood where residents, businesses and government are working together to enhance the overall quality of life for all.

My family moved into Maywood in 1961 and since that time the community has experienced a drastic change. As a teenager I was president of PLCCA’s Youth Leadership Council, president of the Police Explorers, and youth leader for Operation Weed & Seed. Today, programs like this are in dire need in our community for youth empowerment.

Following my matriculation at Tennessee State University (B.S. Psychology), I became program manager for the Illinois Department of Human Services’ TeenREACH program at Proviso East High School and Proviso Math & Science Academy.

Today, programs like these that served after school and summer programming geared towards career, college and life preparation for our youth need to be revitalized.

My corporate career led to area director roles for the two of the largest hotel companies in the world — Marriott International and InterContinental Hotel Group. The experiences have given me an understanding of how vital community engagement truly is.

My career expanded to Nashville, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Dallas, and New York. I have learned from living in many communities the possibilities our village has. I have worked as a liaison

to community economic development through workforce readiness programs and adding new jobs to communities. I have driven training and performance of people, products and processes contributing to financial revenues exceeding Maywood’s $40 million budget.

Maywood must come to together to move forward in a positive way. Of the 14 communities that make Proviso, we have the highest property tax composite rates along with being among the highest taxed in Cook County. Due to elected officials’ management decisions and votes, we have the highest water cost in Proviso and rank 156 out of 162 communities that receive City of Chicago water.

I am running for office to make a positive change in community engagement, economics, safety, housing, health, and education. When my grandfather, Willis J. Booker Sr., and father, Willis J. Booker Jr., passed away within one year of each other, I returned home.

Working to rebuild my immediate family, I realized my community family needed me, as well. Now a homeowner, I have experienced my share of issues in homeownership, renovations, water bills and receiving a $1,500 increase on my property tax in one year. These issues led me to join the Economic Development Commission. From there, I began to experience further frustration on what must be acknowledged at this point as intentional negligence from our elected officials.

Our village manager is voted on annually by our elected officials. While they have voted to increase his salary year after year, they have yet to lay out a plan that would showcase accountable measurements of success for him and each department of administration. To take our community to the next level, we must make strategic and impactful decisions.

We must change our community narrative to focus on our centralized proximity to two international airports, our great bus, train and interstate transportation access. Maywood’s trade area is defined as a 15-minute drive from the center of the village extending to approximately 125 square miles and population over 860,000.

Together, we can restore our downtown district with amenities that we all can enjoy, including full-service restaurants and grocery shopping. We will support new and existing local businesses, entrepreneurs and the workforce; improve our commercial corridors; and attract new investment to build a stronger, more dynamic local economy.

An economic message that is based on our community’s collective vision conveyed by all key stakeholders will establish a consistent community “brand” and competitive identity.

The real cost of racial justice lies ahead Why is equality so assiduously avoided?

Why does white America delude itself, and how does it rationalize the evil it retains?

The majority of white Americans consider themselves sincerely committed to justice for the Negro. They believe that American society is essentially hospitable to fair play and to steady growth toward a middle-class Utopia embodying racial harmony. But unfortunately this is a fantasy of self-deception and comfortable vanity. Overwhelmingly America is still struggling with irresolution and contradictions. It has been sincere and even ardent in welcoming some change.

But too quickly apathy and disinterest rise to the surface when the next logical steps are to be taken. Laws are passed in a crisis mood after a Birmingham or a Selma, but no substantial fervor survives the formal signing of legislation. The recording of the law in itself is treated as the reality of the reform.

This limited degree of concern is a reflection of an inner conflict which measures cautiously the impact of any change on the status quo. As the nation passes from opposing extremist behavior to the deeper and more pervasive elements of equality, white America reaffirms its bonds to the status quo. It had contemplated comfortably hugging the shoreline but now fears that the winds of change are blowing it out to sea.

The practical cost of change for the nation up to this point has been cheap.

The limited reforms have been obtained at bargain rates. There are no expenses, and no taxes are required, for Negroes to share lunch counters, libraries, parks, hotels and other facilities with whites.

Even the psychological adjustment is far from formidable. Having exaggerated the emotional difficulties for decades, when demands for new conduct became inescapable, white Southerners may have trembled under the strain but they did not collapse.

Even the more significant changes involved in voter registration required neither large monetary nor psychological sacrifice. Spectacular and turbulent events that dramatized the demand created an erroneous impression that a heavy burden was involved.

The real cost lies ahead. The stiffening of white resistance is a recognition of that fact.
