A longtime Maywood lawmaker is making her own history just as Democrats are set to begin a historic era of dominance in Springfield. State Sen. Kimberly Lightford (D-4th) was recently named Senate Majority Leader, making her the first African American female to hold the position and among the highest-ranking elected officials in state governance. The Jan. 9 appointment also solidifies what may have already been the case — the Maywood resident, whose district includes much of Proviso Township, is arguably the most powerful black elected official in Illinois not named Preckwinkle. During an interview on Jan. 13, Lightford, 50, described how her new position fits into the larger Senate hierarchy. See LIGHTFORD on page 3

After more than a year of conference calls, committee meetings and public hearings, the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 Board of Education voted unanimously to accept the scope of work in the district’s master facilities plan, which is roughly 120 pages, during a regular meeting on Jan. 8. The range of capital improvements in the

master plan runs the gamut, encompassing basic life safety maintenance projects to relatively obscure improvements like electrical upgrades and air conditioning installation to work like classroom and lab upgrades and re-positioning athletic fields. As a whole, the master plan encompasses possibly the most extensive capital improvement campaign in the district’s history and likely its costliest and lengthiest.

District officials estimate that the full plan could cost upwards of $100 million and take nearly a decade to complete. The vote on Jan. 8 would set in motion a series of events, such as the initiation of predesign and design phases of construction and the selection of a construction manager to oversee the capital work, that would See D209 MASTER PLAN on page 6
