Typography has always caught my eye, ever since childhood, number plates, logos, writings on walls, sign boards, movie posters, stickers and hand painted advertisements would have my attention on car rides to and fro. I have had prior experience creating a standard Roman font and characters, but this time around, I wanted to experiment with Indic scripts. I chose hindi in the Devanagari script because it was something very very fresh for my direction in design. Being a south Indian, the only hindi I experienced was ten years in school as a second language, which was quite boring, and films. So, in a sense of it, I was looking at this project in purely typographic perspective. After intense initial research on the web, books at the studio and leisurely walks through crowded Old Delhi streets sprinkled with custom type, the project took off quickly and with direction. Four weeks resulting in a complete Indic font. The font features 106 characters and glyphs.

Project II Kerala Gold Clothing & Accessories with Charolette Paterson Project : Indigo print graphics for Summer ‘12 Collection Guided By: Nikki Duggal /Mixed Juice Design Duration: 6 Weeks

Initial explorations and styles.

Kerala Gold is a brand under Mixed Juice Design which makes quirky high-end fashion. This project was a part of its expansion into new and higher ground. I joined the project in phase two, with Charolette Paterson, a print designer from Loughborough University, on the brand’s Winter Collection. The graphics were to be reminiscent of Delhi, with an Indigo flavour to cool the summer heat. The project started out layering my illustrations and graphics with Charolette’s illustrations and photographs to achieve a unique, colourful and surreal feel. The project evolved along the way as we mixed and matched styles, graphics and colours.

Project III Lonely Surfers’ Surf School Project : Branding and Identity 1 Week-Independent

Concepts and variations.

Located on the lush Rushikonda beach of Vizag city, a shack nestled on the shore, lazy hammocks and palm trees, where the swell is quite swell, lies the Lonely Surfers’ Surf School, Andhra Pradesh’s first surfing and water sports club. Surf shack by day and party spot by nightfall, surfer and entrepreneur Anudeep aka Andy, plans to expand the business soon, into a school cum bar and restraunt with a tattoo shop in the back. The keywords were : Simplistic+Lonely Surfers+Unique+Representing Spirit+Easily Reproduced and replicated. The concept of the logo is derived from the philosophy of the Yin and Yang. A guerrila advertising campaign is underway, stencils and spraypaint. For now, the waters are looking good.

Project Iv The Red Pills - Bones Project: Album Art / Visual Identitiy 1 Week-Independent

*

* ”There was a little girl” written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow All music composed, written, performed and mastered by Suyash Kinjal Medh and Vikram Mallik B. unless otherwise indicated. Recorded at TheFamousFive, Chennai, India. This music is FREE. The Red Pills | 2012

The Red Pills are an unsigned, two-piece Indie / Post Punk Band based out of New Delhi / Chennai. Their album art and visual identity were created for their upcoming album, Bones. The concept of the art being two red pills, representing the member count, placed above the title ‘Bones’ to create the visual appearance of a skull. The rough edged, vintage finish of the graphics reflects on the band’s noisy yet melodic style of music.

Older Work Upside Down Magazine Project : Newspaper Layout, Design and Graphics Semi-Hypothetical UpsideDown is an independant, underground electronic music magazine. The font for the header of the magazine which reads ‘upsidedown’ is a completely custom font which was developed specifically for the cover. The texture and form of it was inspired by the ‘vinyl scratch’, a sound effect commonly used in electronic/ experimental music. The background graphics and mag aesthetic mirrors the visual appearance of the music featured within the publication.

Acknowledgments I would like thank all my faculty over the years, S.M.Shah, Jogi Pangaal, Priyankar Gupta, Dhaivat Shukla, Jay Menon, William D’Silva, Ms.Vartikka Kaul, Mrs.Sumir Narasimhan, Prof.Usha Iyer and Prof.Balaram. Thank you for taking your time to mould me, I might not have been the best student, but I think it’s safe to say that I’ve learnt quite a bit along the way. All my friends (you know who you are!) for all the good times, would have gone crazy in the head without you guys! And last but not the least, my parents, for believing in me and not losing faith through the trials and tribulations. All in all, it was quite the experience! Thank you!
