Men’s Hockey Stumbles Out of the Gate By Harrison Tribble
On September 4th, the defending CIS Men’s Hockey Canada West Champions, the University of Alberta Golden Bears, paid a visit to the Encana Arena. In a hard fought edition of the “Battle of the University of Alberta”, the Vikings stuck with the Bears for the first two periods. In the third period, however, the Golden Bears proved to be too much for the Vikes to handle. The Bears scored 2 quick goals to open things up, leaving the final score at 5-1. Following the Bears game, the Vikings were able to recover to a 3-2-1 preseason record. On September 25, the Vikings welcomed the resurrected Red Deer College Kings to the Encana Arena for the ACAC League Home Opener. Despite a nine year absence from ACAC hockey, the Kings came on strong taking a 1-0 lead in the second period. Last seasons’ ACAC goal scoring leader, Craig Cornelson, tied things up, but the Kings responded quickly regaining their lead. The Kings’ 2 goals proved to be enough, as the Vikings dropped the first game of the season. On September 27, the Vikings headed to Red Deer hoping to return the favor and play spoiler in the Kings’ home opener. The Vikings played hard in Red Deer, but could not best goaltender Kramer Barnstable, who posted a 29 save shutout in a 1-0 Kings’ victory. For the first time in a long time, coach Gusdal and Vikings hockey are seeing some adversity early in the season. If there is one positive to take from the 0-2 start, it is that goal tending will not be an issue this season. Joel Danyluk and Andy Williams both looked stellar in their debut. Chase Martin will get his first taste of ACAC hockey when he starts between the pipes this Friday October 4th as the Vikings look to get their swagger back against the Briercrest clippers. Puck drops at 7:30 Friday night and 2:00 Saturday afternoon.

Men’s Hockey Team Picks up Their Socks for an Impressive Weekend By Joel Danyluk The Vikings Men’s Hockey Team took on the Briercrest Clippers this past weekend in two home games. We were looking to get our first wins of the season against the hard working Clippers team. In this pursuit for a win, First year goalie Chase Martin received the start in goal on Friday night. It was his first game in the ACAC regular season league and the team came out with an offensive punch winning with an impressive score of 11-4. The Vikings were led by 3rd year forward Adam Johnson who scored 4 goals and added one assist. The Vikings had a little bit of a scare on Saturday afternoon but came out victorious in overtime with a goal scored by 5th year forward Scott Aucoin to win the game 4-3. Chase Martin picked up his second win of the season in goal and improved the team’s record to 2-2. Overall it was a positive weekend with 15 goals in comparison to the opening weekend where we only scored 1 goal. The teams within the ACAC this year seem to be more evenly matched, with any team capable of winning any night. The previous years we saw gaps between the first place and last place clubs but the league is improving as a whole. Up next for the hockey team is going to be the toughest test yet. We face our rivals the SAIT Trojans this coming weekend with puck drop Friday night at 7:30, at the Encana Arena. Hope to see you all there!

Augustana Golf Team Debut By Katelyn Stewart The Vikings Golf Team this year consisted of 8 players: Cole Feth, Darion Geddes, Chase Martin, Braxton Fox, Thomas Regier, Katelyn Stewart, April Strandlund and Celine Amundrud. Our head coach was Camrose Golf Club’s Bill Penny, who generously donated his time to helping us improve and teaching us how to compete. Vikings Athletics Director, Greg Ryan, assisted the team at our first tournament in Lacombe and Neil Hepburn helped out for our final weekend tournament in Olds. We entered our debut season with the hopes of proving we could compete with the existing teams of the ACAC. Our first tournament was the ACAC North Regional Tournament, hosted by Red Deer College at the Lacombe Golf and Country Club on September 14th and 15th. Saturday’s round started late in the afternoon, resulting in the women’s teams having to finish 6 holes the following morning, in addition to completing Sunday’s 18 holes. Some of us were new to tournament play, so the Lacombe weekend served as a good learning experience and as a starting point to improve from. Cole Feth finished highest of our men’s team, shooting 81 and 78, and placing 9th out of 55 golfers. April Strandlund finished highest of our women’s team, shooting 102 and 105, and placing 10th out of 18 golfers. The Vikings men’s golf team finished 6th out of 8 teams, just 2 strokes back from 5th place. The Vikings women’s golf team finished 4th out of 4 teams, also just 2 strokes back from 3rd place. After a weekend break, we attended ACAC Provincial Championships at the Olds Golf Club on September 28th and 29th. We traveled down a day early so that we could golf a practice round and get a feel for the course. Now that we knew what to expect from our opponents, and the course, we were much more prepared to compete. The men were on the tee box first on Saturday, all wearing toques and gloves as they waited for the day to begin. But despite our readiness to compete, the lightning quick greens and intense wind on Saturday left most of the tournament participants disappointed with their play. Fighting the elements, both teams managed to improve their game for the final day of the tournament. Results to come soon, as official results have yet to be posted on the ACAC website.
