Work will start next week on improving access to one of the City’s most popular sheltered swimming spots. A new accessible, 350m-long shared pathway will connect the Grannies Pool car park to the existing pathway along the Swansea Channel breakwall at Blacksmiths Beach, and will be finished off with an accessible concrete viewing area. Council’s Acting Manager Community Planning, Andrew Bryant, said a 50m-section of the Grannies Pool pathway will be built with world-leading recycling technology similar to that used on one of the access paths to Blacksmiths Beach. The technology uses reprocessed plastic waste and has a longer lifespan than a traditional timber boardwalk. “The new path is comprised of a mix of concrete and recycled plastics, which provides a sturdy and long-lasting asset for the community,’’ Mr Bryant said. The new level pathway and platform are designed to be accessible to all users, including wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility, and will provide a view of Grannies Pool and the surrounding channel.

“While access improvements have taken place at many of our Council facilities, the provision of the shared pathway and platform will enhance these improvements by allowing wheelchair users, people with a disability, carers and the elderly improved access to the water and to the end of the breakwall,” Mr Bryant said. Council crews will also take this opportunity to reseal the access road, off Ungala Road. While the car park will be closed for the duration of the works, pedestrian access will remain.
