Parliamentary secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC announced this week Lake Macquarie City Council has received $432,422 in funding towards the upgrade of Belmont Baths as part of the NSW Liberal National Government’s $200 million Stronger Country Communities fund. The project will involve a new jetty and protected swimming enclosure to replace the finger jetty that was destroyed in the 2015 storm. The new facility will incorporate protective mesh on all three sides, which will encourage people to use the area for swimming and ramp access to deep water for accessibility. The existing amenities block will be demolished and replaced. “I am very pleased the Baths will be rebuilt. I received very strong representations from the community who clearly want them restored and loved once again by locals and visitors.

Lake Macquarie City Council has released a concept plan of what the re-established Belmont Baths facility will look like when completed.

The new amenities block will be steel and brick structure, with fully accessible shower, toilet and change room, aquatic wheelchair storage, toilets and change rooms, outdoor and indoor showers. “These grants through the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Fund will help Council deliver improved amenities for our community,” Lake Macquarie City Council Mayor Kay Fraser said. “The new Belmont Baths will be a great facility for people who enjoy swimming or simply relaxing by the Lake, and the addition of a fully accessible modern amenities block and ramp will enhance the experience for all users.” Source: Media Release from Scot MacDonald

The tender is currently being finalised and expected to go out early April for the baths and amenities block. Construction of the baths is scheduled for July-October, to be ready for the next swimming season. The amenities block will be demolished in July to allow access to baths construction, then work on the new amenities block will begin in October, scheduled to finish January.

Did you know?

We found this fascinating... According to a recent article we read in the Australian newspaper, there is an increase in the amount of Australians willing to commute long distances to take advantage of job opportunities. There is about half a million long-range commuters working in Australia. That’s almost 5% of the workforce choosing to live in one city and work in another.

The biggest flow of commuters is from the central coast (Gosford and Wyong) south across the Hawkesbury River into Sydney. Almost 120,000 workers flow south into the greater Sydney metropolis in the morning, only to return exhausted in the evening. Melbourne’s long range commuting ritual is repeated in almost every direction: 15,000 come up from Geelong, 9000 come from Gisborne, 8000 come from Bachus Marsh and 3000 come from Warragul. Sydney, too, has pulling power: 21,000 from Wollongong, 7000 from Newcastle and 3000 from Bowral. The point is that at every census there are more commuters, not less. There is greater interconnectivity of commuters, not less. And these are just the flows at the capital city level. The same intercity flows would flourish within the regions. We Australians are a shift lot; we travel and we commute in order to soak up opportunities wherever we can. Source: The Weekend Australian, February 24-25 2018
