Fancy a beer mate? A
head of two local beer festivals in the forthcoming months, View Timperley went to find out a little more from information from Timperley based organisers Mark Jordan and Justin Thompson.
What’s the history of Fancy a beer mate? How and where did it all begin?
MJ) We live in Timperley and we were just looking for places in the surrounding areas. We searched on the internet and then went to look at some of the venues. JT) We needed somewhere that would be large enough to host an actual festival. The problem we had was that a lot of the places you go to, leisure centres, etc. all host events on a continual basis, so we had to try to find a slot. Trying to find a location to support a festival proved to be difficult. We were very close to setting up at a few other locations but then we came across Alderley Edge and, very soon afterwards, Sale. MJ) We are focussing on the two planned events for now and then hopefully we’ll host another two or three later this year at other locations.
MJ) It all began at the Altrincham Beer Festival, Last August Bank Holiday. The festival was quite crowded and we were looking for a place to stand which happened to be next to the entrance. We counted the number of people coming in and thought to ourselves, “These people are each paying £5 to enter.” A few days later we began our research. JT) I guess we thought that with all our experience in business and beer drinking we should be able A re the festivals hosted in licensed premises or will they be in alternato give it a go. tive venues? Why did you choose Alderley Edge (23rd & 24th April) and Sale (21st MJ) we can apply for a licence if necessary but the first two or 22nd May) for venues for your first two festivals?
festivals are at licensed premises. We want to develop a reputation for hosting trouble-free well organised events. JT) we feel that the events themselves shouldn’t attract any trouble. We are not promoting any lager; we are trying to promote natural ales. People shouldn’t experience hangovers – The beers are all natural and made of natural ingredients. Most of the pubs which are closing or near to closed are the one providing chemical based, over-produced beers. We have found that the pubs which have the real ales available are thriving. Where are the beers at your festival sourced from? Are they all in the Northwest? JT) At present we are just looking at independent breweries in the Northwest - Cheshire, Derbyshire, & Lancashire areas. As our events grow we hope to provide even more variety and source beers from a wider area. MJ) There are a lot of Micro
breweries set up in the area these days, Two to Four guys operating in barns or sheds and they just brew. How did you find out about the breweries that will feature at your festival, especially the smaller Micro breweries? MJ) There’s a website called “quaffale” which lists every brewery in the world with maps, postcodes, etc. JT) you also have the “camra good beer guide” which shows all the real ale pubs and lists all of the independent breweries. MJ) There’s a close network of people, you meet with people at one brewery and they tell you to go and see somebody else. We discovered one brewery in a Garage.
JT) Yes, we were in Standish, and they were brewing in a garage linked to their mother’s house. They have now actually outgrown the garage and moved to a unit on an industrial estate, they were producing 2000 pints a week.
flavour and a nice yeasty taste. What if people don’t drink beer? JT) We will be providing a number of wines, red, white and rosé. We will also have a number of ciders on. If people are driving – we will be providing free soft drinks.
Where do these guys sell their beer normally? Is there any additional entertainment at the event? i.e. MJ) They try and get deals with Live music? local pubs, or they bottle it up JT) To start we are just going and sell it. to have background music. MJ We know that live music comes as part of the formula for beer festivals and we will aim to factor this in at some point. As well as attending the festival can people volunteer to help out at an event? MJ) Of course, If anybody reading this is interested please get in touch via our website; www.fancyabeermate.com we are looking for people to help out serving beer. Can people host their own event? MJ) Yes, if people have a venue,, we can absolutely come and host an event for them. It’s a good alternative to something like wine tasting. Beer sampling can also be a good hospitality or corporate event. How much does it cost to attend an event? JT) It costs just £5 to get in and with that you get a free Pen and a free engraved pint pot that you can take away with you, MJ) Yes, Please take it with you so we don’t have to wash it. JT ) You also get a free brochure. The beers are only £1.25 per half. The event will be run on a token system; each token will be £1.25 and will be worth half a pint.

Team of the Month T
eams from the International School of Skating at the Silver Blades ice rink in Altrincham swept aside more experienced competition at the British Synchronised Skating Championships to take gold in the Elementary section and silver in the Intermediate. Coaches David McGrouther and Samantha Ozard initiated synchronised skating in Altrincham just two and a half years ago, shortly after the rink opened. Despite starting with complete novices, the squad has gone from strength to strength, and the rink entered four teams comprising over 50 skaters in this
year’s national competition. As well as Team ISS, who took silver in the Intermediate competition, and the Silver Blades team, who won the Elementary section, the Bladerunners team gained
a fourth place in the Adult competition, and the Twizzles team, whose youngest members are just 6 years old, came sixth in the Elementary competition – a fantastic achievement in their first year.
The squad’s success this year means they will now be looking to compete internationally next season. David McGrouther, head of coaching at the rink, explained, “Some teams are happy to continue competing at the same level year after year, but we have great ambitions for all our skaters. Though most are less experienced than those from other rinks, we have some great talent with enormous potential. The skaters have worked incredibly hard to come this far, sometimes starting their training sessions at 5am to get the ice time. They really deserve their success.” Synchronised skating is Britain’s fastest growing ice sport, and 37 teams from as far afield as Inverness and the Isle of Wight competed at this year’s
British Championship event. Whilst teams from the USA, Canada and the rest of Europe currently dominate the sport internationally, if the Altrincham teams have their way, that won’t last long!

The Pond S
even years ago we decided our garden lacked a certain something so we bought a small pre-formed pond with a waterfall. Half a day’s digging, two hours wiring and we had a beautiful bijou water feature. We didn’t know very much about what fish to get so we bought a book. Bad mistake! Very, very grave error. You see, while books are written by experts who know loads of stuff, the fish don’t read them (they probably prefer novels) and so they don’t know what they are supposed to do.
“Start small, your fish will grow to the size and depth of their new home.” Said the expert in his book. Huh! Five years later and we started to see just how much of an expert he really was. We had a ghost koi the size of an adolescent Moby Dick and several goldfish that were not that far behind. The nature herself intervened. A couple of tree roots, the size of a small forest, surfaced at the bottom of the garden and when we had finished pulling, digging cursing and cutting we had a number of deep trenches all over the bottom of the garden. And thus the idea of The Pond was born. An all-singing, all-dancing, veritable twenty-first century water palace with room for big fish, more fish even, a spectacular series waterfall and lights. Lots and lots of lights. And a patio where we could sit on warm summer nights and feel at one with nature. (In
