“I would like to congratulate you on your excellent publication. Most of the other attempts at “free” magazines are pathetic - full of advertisments and nothing of value. By contrast, I found your new magazine well presented (on quality paper) and full of interesting topics. I say “Thank you and well done”. A fabulous first attempt and keep them coming. Regards, David White - Timperley” All photography by Mark Bentele.

Timperley Country Fair

Enduring memories of fairs gone by With “Disco” Dave Aldred

In the very early days having to annually climb onto the roof of the Red Cross Hut to site the speakers. Fred Talbot’s practical demonstration of the effects of Helium on the voice – 10 years out of school Fred still couldn’t resist the challenge of attempting to ‘teach me’! One of the early Circus Workshop’s which really shouldn’t have included throwing rather large Knives at me!! couples I “married” (played at their weddings) 20 odd years ago and in one case being asked to do their kids wedding!

The enduring stupidity of one elderly couple who, when standing directly in front of one of the speakers vociferously complained they were ‘too loud’. I gently explained “that’s why they are called loud speakers” whilst wondering if they

with the many people I knew from growing up in Timperley, I guess now the greatest pleasure is presenting the Rolfe Aldred trophy, in memory of my parents and their greatest friends.

Frank Sidebottom fantastic. What I do is, I’ve taped myself at Glastonbury from 1994 I think it was and what I do is get the portable tele and put it right down at the bottom of my garden, get a tent and camp and just look down the garden and it looks about the size of what you see when you there. So you can be at the festival and you don’t have to get muddy feet. Who is your best mate on Twitter? Frank, what was your favourite part of yesterdays (12/09/09) Timperley Country Fair?

He phoned me up and said “I’m very sorry Francis but I started doing it and it just got out of hand. I get about 900 hundred people per week writing to me saying what are you up to, and then I have to go on your myspace, see what your up to then go back on your Twitter”. So I just let Stephen know what im up to and he twitters everyone because that saves me doing it. Who’s Stephens Best mate from Twitter I don’t know, is he here Stephen... Once the new ticket machines are in place, the booking hall will be closed

Timperley Band Back On Track 2009 started very encouragingly for Timperley Band, after a very successful 2008. Work to consolidate the band’s position in the North West Championship section coupled with significant progress behind the scenes to the support structure meant that another successful year was potentially on the cards. That optimism was sadly turned on its head at the end of March when a number of issues came together which eventually even threatened the bands very future existence. Firstly the band unusually received a poor result at a major competition, some players decided to move on from the band as a consequence of this. Work and other personal circumstances also led to additional players leaving the band. Since the beginning of January Timperley have been led by freelance conductors following the departure of David Evans due to work commitments and other pressures. Coupled with the player loss and difficulties to secure a suitable full time

professional conductor to take the band forward has also compounded the situation. The band very regrettably had no alternative to cancel a small number of engagements as a consequence before the bands scheduled August break. A strong core of fifteen good players and the committee decided to try and rebuild the band. Gary Winson, Band Chairman explained the brass band world is now incredibly fluid at the upper levels. Basically there are too few players, we are not alone, a number of good bands have gaps in them. It takes time to build a band back up with the right calibre of players to maintain the high standards Timperley have achieved since reforming at the end of 2005. We have always worked very hard on all fronts to achieve both a high musical standard and make the band enjoyable so players wish to stay, which made the situation very frustrating for the remaining players and the committee’. Following several difficult months, the band is pleased to report they are well on the road to recovery thanks to a lot of hard work and patience from all involved. The rebuilding effort has been very successful to the extent that only a few players are required for a full band

once again. Gary explained ‘we are advertising the remaining positions, it’s a great opportunity particularly for players who want to perform at a higher standard to join the band at this exciting time.’ Another major step in the right direction was the appointment of Andrew White, in June, as the band’s new Musical Director. Gary explained “Andrew’s appointment has been crucial in taking the band forward. His considerable experience and knowledge will ensure Timperley continue to improve and challenge again. Andrew certainly knows how to generate enthusiasm and instil discipline to ensure high playing standards. Andrew is very well qualified as a musician, also his

Local Artist

I am Helen Lawrenson, a local mother of three with a history of technical drawing and a love of art. Redesigning our kitchen, we worked hard to create this family room as desired, and I wanted a piece of art to complete it. After many hours spent searching the shops and internet for a canvas, I decided to create my own piece, as I could not find what I wanted, whether it be the wrong design, size, or colour. No picture seemed quite special enough to admire each day. After taking inspiration from my brother who died some years ago, I painted a

vivid red flower in his memory. I used mixed media, to create a textured finish with highlights of silver leaf, which is shown to great effect under lighting. I was thrilled with the result. Friends and family were impressed, and so I began my first commissions. I have since also replicated designs from feature wallpaper, to complement a room perfectly. I offer a unique design service, allowing you the client to create your very own canvas to complement your living space perfectly. I wish that my work inspires people to take a moment to admire and enjoy

Timerley Scout Group B

etween the 22nd and 29th August 2009 Timperley Explorer Scouts walked a 60 Mile section of the Cumbria Way to assist the Help for Heroes charity, to date they have raised over £2500. Help for Heroes was launched in October 2007 by a group of friends who wished to do something to help the wounded coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq. The Cumbria Way is a challenging route through the Lake District which generally starts on the south lakes coast & ends in the border city of Carlisle but Scouts being Scouts they decided to start with the hard bit first ! Camping at ‘Great Tower Scout Camp’ they were ‘bussed’ to the start of each route on a daily basis and then collected often wet through at the end. Beginning on Sunday in the village of Caldbeck, North of Skiddaw Mountain they walked 16.5 Miles in the first day alone to Keswick. Over remote moor land, in some extremely wet weather and strong winds. The Monday was supposed to be a day off but they went to

Honister Slate mine for a tour and the via ferrata + zip wire. Popular in the Italian Dolomites and across Europe Via Ferrata is Italian for “Iron Way”; the system has been used in the Alps for more than a century and during World War One they were used to ferry troops and equipment over mountainous areas. The Via Ferrata involved lots of eye, hand and leg co-ordination and thankfully every one of the Explorers managed to complete it without injury. They were treated to an open air climb with steep drops at every corner followed by an 80 feet zip wire across a gorge over 100 feet below ! On Tuesday they walked 15.5 miles from Keswick to the Old Dungeon Ghyll. With aching legs and a long descent into the ‘Langdales’ everyone had some refreshment at this famous pub and the clientele were extremely generous. On the Wednesday everyone had a lie in and some rest whilst the leaders went to the launderette to wash and dry the Scouts T shirts. No rest for some !

Thursday saw the Scouts walk 16 from the Old Dungeon Ghyll to just south of Coniston. Pouring rain overnight but a rapid improvement together with two of the female Explorers getting their GCSE results raised the group’s spirits. It was a generally undulating route which saw the Scouts walk an extra 3 miles than planned. On Friday they walked the last 13 miles into the market town of Ulverston where they were greeted by one of the leaders with a bottle of bubbly and a Formula One type celebration. Explorer Scouts is for children between the ages of 14 and 18, if you wish to find out more you can visit their website at www. snowdonexplorers.co.uk. Or alternatively come along each Friday evening between 7.15pm and 9pm at The Den on Park Road near to Timperley Village.
