Calendar - Week at a Glance

From Pastor Brian C.S. Lewis once wrote, “the only two questions to ask about a poem, in the long run, are, firstly, whether it is interesting, enjoyable, attractive, and secondly, whether this enjoyment wears well and helps or hinders you toward all the other things you would like to enjoy, or do, or be.” As Christians we want to enjoy God and do His will and be Christlike in our actions and attitudes. Let’s apply what Mr. Lewis said to a specific area of church life: church music, which is, after all, poetry with a tune. Church music has one primary goal: to teach, promote, and facilitate the worship of God. Most of what we sing should be vertical in its direction. In other words, we ought to be singing to God. The other direction, also valid for a corporate service, is horizontal. That is, we ought to sing also to one another about God. Christian music, especially Christian music for a worship service, should be Christ-centered and biblically true. So much for its purpose. Beyond that, I believe the songs we sing in church ought to be “interesting, enjoyable, [and] attractive.” The songs we sing must be singable, both in musical range and in language. If we can’t sing it because of its key or if we can’t understand it because of outdated words, then we’re not going to find it very interesting. We’re certainly not going to enjoy the experience. Oh, and you can forget it being attractive to those outside the church, or to those who stopped attending for whatever reason. So, do the songs we sing help or hinder us in what we want to do (worship and glorify God) or be (followers of Christ)? What are we doing well and right? What needs to change?
