Quantum Physics Theories

2018/19 semester 2

Double slit theory A demonstration that light and matter can display characteristics of both classically defined waves and particles; moreover, physicists have found that even passive observation of the double slit experiment (by changing the test apparatus and passively 'ruling out' all but one possibility), can actually change the measured result. This is called Observer effect.

Simulation hypothesis Some interpreters have taken these theories to the macro level to say that there are a set of probabilities in which we exist both in the present and in the future. At the quantum level, reality does not exist if you are not looking at it. Things do not really exist as we tend to imagine them to exist; they only seem to appear to exist—and they appear to exist only in the presence of an observer. Which brings us to the Simulation hypothesis, which proposes that all of reality, including the Earth and the universe, is in fact an artificial simulation, most likely a computer simulation created by a super computer (e.g: Matrioshka brain)

Concept

CONCEPT The narrative revolves around an apprehensive girl who ran away from home. Throughout her journey, beautiful sights and mysteries greet the young girl. However, her adventure is not a smooth one. Suspicions of the world and dreams of home follow her every step. She eventually finds herself at the edge of the world where the rules of her reality no longer apply. Perhaps her reality is not what it seems. The narratived draws inspiration from the Double Slit theory were it shows that there are possibilities for alternatives in our reality. Is also based on the Simulation Hypothesis where the protagonist discovers that everything in her life is just a virtual simulation. Upon delving into Quantum Physics, the artist realises that there is more to the world than meets the eye and hence translates this conundrum into the piece

Inspiration Lumps studio

Lumps Studio is operated by artist Sam Drew aka Lumps. Sam is an illustrator from Cardiff, Wales. I like his 90s style comics that are often grotesque or sublime to the ridiculous. The colour palette that he uses appeals to me as well, especially the pink, yellow and blue hues that are incoperated into most of his works. It can also be seen how much effort is placed into drawing details on the pieces. Through this, he is able to create textures that makes his works more interesting to view. I hope to push my illustrating skillsets even more by diving into this kind of illustration style that I had admired for a long time.

Inspiration Christian Robles

Cristian Robles is an illustrator hailing from Barcelona, Spain. His behance contains vast amounts of works, and it is such a huge inspiration to me. Again, I am a fan of these kind of 90s style comics and I like how he is able to draw different kinds of faces in a interesting manner. Besides that, he also plays with scales and contrasts. Making the entire poster an interesting one.

Inspiration Rudi Company

This video from Rudi company is a music video for SIAMÉS, called Mr. Fear. I want to incoperate how they play with the placement and timing of the frames, which would look interesting on the media wall as it is able to break up the long length. It would be nice to also play with depth for the video that I will be creating, to prevent the footage from looking flat.

Storyboard

Storyboarding The narrative went through quite a few changes throughout the process. This is the first draft that was done, and after presenting it to the class I realised that it is too complicated of a video to execute in the amount of time given, especially after considering the fact that it is the first time that I am doing an After Effects video that is not a GIF. I decided to cut out and streamline the narrative, simplifying it by reducing the number of frames and animations that needs to be done. I also reduced the number of scenes that needed hand drawn animation, like the walking cat in the videos. After completing the first draft of animation, I realised that it can be vastly improved by increasing the number of animations occuring within a frame to make it more interesting to the viewer. And also adding transitions between frames instead of using a sudden cut in between uneccessarily.

Colour scheme

Colour Palette 1

Tried the first colour scheme but I realised that I need to expand the palette because there is not enough colours to suit the visuals Colour Palette 2

Expanded the variety of colours and played around with different shades. However this colour seems too happy and warm for the narrative. Colour Palette 3

Quite like this set of colours but it seems to be too ool toned for my liking, it turns out looking too bleached out and flat in the visuals. Colour Palette 4

Warmed up the previous set of colours and resulted in this, I quite like it and the neon look it gives to the visuals.
