2. CHAMFERING EDGES

1. COMPACT FORM

The edges of the squares are chamfered to increase the number of edges and widen the angle of view.

A square form was chosen because of it’s compactness.

ABOUT THE SITE PLANNING

Catering to the mixed use typology, the Microcosmic Matrix offers a commercial hub along with an institutional day care, open for public use.

The gated housing provides a variety of spaces for private use. Diverse community activities take place along the central pedestrian promenade free from the surrounding chaos. The vehicular movement is resitricted to the edge of the site, allowing user to move freely.

The form is split into four parts to further increase the viewing angle and the gap between them allows sunlight to reach the central core.

Inner corners are chamfered since they open up the rather dark spaces and also enhance privacy by shifting the viewing angle to the outside.

BARBEQUE STATION The outdoor barbeque area, near the O.A.T., is an extention to the kitchen provided in the units. It breaks the redundancy and allows the residents to enjoy a pleasent evening with food outdoors.

CENTRAL PROMENADE A central pedestrian-friendly promenade has been designed to connect the site from one edge to another. It offers the residents the freedom to move around the site without any vehicular disturbance.

A DAY AT THE MICROCOSMIC MATRIX The Microcosmic Matrix is designed in such a way that a person from any age group feels welcomed and is able to engage in multifaceted activities that it has to offer.

OPEN AIR THEATRE The O.A.T. is located at a corner, far away from all the chaos. It enhances the interaction and acts as a space to bring the residents together on special occasions to enjoy performances.

SWIMMING POOL The pool area is located on the podium level, i.e. second floor, to give it the privacy it needs. This placement of the pool gives it’s user a paranoramic view of the open spaces below.

COMMERCIAL The commerical space is designed to cater to the outside public and the residents. It is equipped with private services for the residents like laundary and cyber cafe as well.

The brief required to achieve 500 units with a constraint of 55 m max height and max ground coverage of 55%.

To meet the requirement, each cluster was designed to be able to hold 8-10 units per floor.

To keep the housing inclusive for all, a demographic study was conducted and various iterations of cluster of units were provided.

PROJECT BRIEF The project brief aimed at designing a district hospital in a developing sub-city keeping the functionality and detailed services in mind.

IN RESPONSE TO THE BRIEF The Healing Casa offers it’s users a space that feels like home. It enables them to not just heal physically but mentally as well.

PROBLEM Hospitals have heavy ducting that needs to run straight in the false ceiling. In addition, flat roofs are more suitable to reduce heat gain due to lesser surface area.

THE ILLUSION EFFECT

CONCEPT Pitched roof instantly makes a person think of home. Therefore, a pitched roof hospital will provide a mental comfort to the patient.

To resolve the problem, an illusion of pitched roof has been created by using contrasting materials. Mirror has been used on the top floor so that it can reflect the sky and blend with it.

The brief was kept flexible to allow us to showcase what a democratic space should encompass. The choice to restore or demolish the historical buildings was also kept open to interpretation.

A cluster design for the various ministries has been proposed to enhance the functioning by bringing them together. All the ministries have been staggered and placed on a podium. The podium acts as an open space for interaction and recreational activities.

NEW PARLIAMENT

The parliament building has been relocated to the edge of the hexagon to create a focal point and enhance the transparency between the people and the government. This parliament building can be seen through the India Gate as well.

THE HEXAGON India Gate, being the focal point of the hexagon, instills a feeling a loss followed by that of pride in the visitors. To channelize the feeling of loss into that of giving birth, a tree plantation space has been provided. Along with it, multi-use car parking has been designed with painted floor to act as play-scape when empty.

The bridge is being used by the people to move around the different public spaces.

The space enclosed by the bridge can be used to practice for events even hold short performances.

The horizontal axis, the Janpath road, has been pedestrianized to allow free flow movement for the people visiting the area on foot.

A pedestrian path and deck has been carved out through the existing avenue of trees to provide optimum utilization of the space.

Curves are added along the water channel to enhance the interaction not just across the channel but along the same edge as well.

The central vista zone has a number of radial road intersections. However, the radial space can’t be used physically by the people due to the traffic flow.

Therefore, for optimum utilization of this space, a visual installation has been proposed to spread awareness.

Delhi ranks among the top states for poor air equality. Government has been implementing policies like ‘odd even’ rule to help improve the same.

The most important step to bring change is self-realization. To foster the same, a radial installation has been designed that turns green when the Air Quality Index (AQI) is good and turns red when it is poor.

This empowers the audience with knowledge and helps them see the impact of their and government’s effort in real-time.

B. MOVABLE SEATING Being a space that needs to cater to the freedom of the mass, a movable seating on track has been proposed. Attaching the decks to the tracks, keeps the furniture secure and the movability breaks the redundancy of the uniformly placed benches usually found in parks.

Bamboo culms are planed to obtain bamboo fibres.

After that, bamboo powder is obtained by milling the shavings.

Plastic waste is shredded into flakes by a shredder machine and then polypropylene granules are obtained from a extruder machine.

These are then modified with compatibilizers like aluminate coupling agent to improve the mechanical properties and compatibility with the plastic matrix.

The aim is to propose a smart city intervention that is linked to new or existing buildings or both in the form of a physical digital product/a smart city policy/smart process of delivery or a unique combination of approaches.

Our intervention starts by encouraging the population to help us collect the waste in smart bins. The collected plastic waste along with bamboo is used to manufacture BPC, which further is used as a filament for 3D printing our design module. This module, coated with Ti02 , helps reduce smog. We embed iot sensors and implement ideas like ‘4D printing’ and ‘5G’ to give our module the future it needs.

Converting this waste into a resource, We mix this plastic with a bamboo recourse.

Traditional as well as new structures can make use of this sustainable yet smart module to augment the aesthetics.

The module is coated with Titanium Dioxide lacquer which comes in many colors.

TiO2 is a common, non-expensive and non-toxic material which when comes in contact with UV rays, initiates a photocatalytic process leading to the mineralization of adsorbed organic and inorganic compounds. Hence, improving the air quality index.

DUMMY PROJECT

To get a better understanding of designing a small interior space, a dummy project was taken up.

The aim was to undertake a challenge of designing a small yet functional studio for an architect through a dummy project.

The concept of the studio is to design spaces that fosters the productivity and creativity of the users. Accent colours have been used in the interiors to engage the eye and white furniture has been used to give a neutral background to the workspace.

TOUCH TO ACTIVATE SMART MIRROR

WALK-THROUGH

The aim is to design the interiors of an elevator based on a theme of Contemporary, Italian, Luxury, Vintage, Cultural and Sports. The design must have elements with X-factor while incorporating all necessary fixtures.

The theme selected for the competition is Vintage. The chosen material palette justifies the theme along with being efficient for the modern era.

Apart from the basic requirements, creative elements have been provided that though look retro but provide neoteric solutions to the exising shortcomings of an elevator design.

WOODEN WAINSCOTING

The top part of the elevator walls are cladded with teflon-coated, nylon infused fabric panels wrapped around particle boards.

The fabric comes in variety of shades and patterns and is hydrophobic in nature.

Brass infused with Nickel and Manganese for increased strength is used to create the moulding, skirting and handrail caps.

The brass has a matte-brushed finish for a rustique decor.

The flooring of the elevator is made up of motion and weight sensitive LED Panels of 300x350mm with a clear Acrylic Glass finish.

The flooring is insensitive to water damage.

Hand crafted Muirapiranga wood (Brosimmum Rubescens) rounded square and rectangle panels have been used for the cladding the lower part of the elevator walls.

The panels are finished with a grained red walnut veneer.

SMART MIRROR

A retro-sculpted smart mirror with interactive features has been installed in the lift. The mirror can be activated/ deactivated by a simple touch to display diverse information as well.

The smart feature helps break the awkward silence in the elevator and provides with a neoteric solution in a vintage ambiance.

UV lighting system is installed inside the elevator and gets activated when the weight sensitive sensors in the flooring detect no human presence inside.

It sweeps the area with penetrating UV rays, killing all the viruses and bacteria inside the elevator, both airborne and on the the surfaces

ELDERLY SEATING

HANDRAIL

Provision of an automatic opening and closing seat for the elderly and the specially-abled has been accommodated in the elevator.

Polished hardwood handrail with brass grippers at the ends is coated with an anti-microbial transparent layer of Germ Sheild, a self sanitizing material.

The control button for the feature is housed in the main lift control panel console.

The handrail is provided with an additional feature of diffused illumination effect.

THE FLOORING SYSTEM

The flooring system is a LED Panel system with motion and weight sensors which when activated, creates a pattern around the passenger and a visual zone for each individual.

The illuminated patterns helps in maintaining social distancing and prevents lifts from being over crowded.

UV LIGHTING SYSTEM

URBAN TRAIL The home page of the app provides a personalised feed, full of stories, giving the user the opportunity to undertake a guided tour, relive another user’s journey or read about a fellow user’s experience through a blog.

It helps encapsulate a varied number of journeys and experiences, thus enabling an exchange of innovative ideas.

Introducing Nongriat Village Tucked away in the hills of the eastern subhimalayas, Meghalaya is a calm and serene state.

It is home to unacknowledged talent particularly visible in Cherrapunji and Nongriat, a hamlet situated here. Hidden in the heart of the forest, these living spectacles store hearts more than they store talent.

Nongriat is a tiny village, populated by 170 commoners.

The village is very rich in terms of talent. With everyone having knowledge and skill of the art of construction of the root bridge, the people are content with being shunned in a corner; unknown about their art being appreciated by all.

“Standing alone might give peace but being a community is what gives you strength”

Craftsperson’s Interview Proud of its dexterous lineage, Charlie enlightened us on how his great grandfather played an avid role in constructing the root bridge and adopted the responsibility to teach this skill to the entire village.

Following his grandparent’s legacy Charlie is playing an active role in the third tier of the root bridge.

What are Root Bridges?

Root bridges are a gift of nature that was initiated by man. It starts with bamboo, used to stuff the roots together which then entwine into each other naturally, in such a way, that it forms a strong self sustaining bridge over a waterfall.

The bamboo is later removed and the bridge is covered with stones wooden planks and logs that are held together by the roots forming a path.

Charlie talks about how technology is slowly corrupting the ideology of the masses. He vehemently banishes the argument that steel makes the structure more sustainable, stating there is no substitute for nature.

The aim is to document an unknown craft and shed light on the craftsperson and his skill.

The participants are required to explore a lesser known but highly significant tranditional construction technique of India.

It is home to unacknowledged talent of creating bridges out of living root trees particularly visible in Cherrapunji and Nongriat, a hamlet situated here. Hidden in the heart of the forest, these living spectacles store hearts more than they store talent.

ELEVATION Weaving root bridges is a seasonal activity practiced in the monsoons and is not the income generator for the craftsmen on Nongriat who earn by managing guesthouses.

SITE PLAN Facts about Root Bridges The hidden perplex, capable of holding 500 people has a handrail thicker than the balustrade. The tread roots are encrusted by mud, rocks, bamboo and timber members to grab the roots and form a stable and sustainable transit area. Despite the prodigious size of the bridge, one rubber tree can suffice for one or more bridge. This doesn’t compromise with its strength as it’s stronger than steel as per research. This is one of the most awe inspiring facts about the root bridge.

A small bridge like structure is constructed with the grid technique using bamboo sticks. This acts as an interium solution for the community to cross the waterfall.

The thick bamboo is then hollowed out.

The hollow regions of the bamboo is then stuffed with all the roots and kept aside, acting as temporary bridge.

The roots then start entwining which ultimately helps strengthen the bridge.

Monsoon night

So they decided to use whatever they had to build a bridge.

That’s how the first living root bridge came into existence.

So, they decided to build another one on the top of the first bridge.

After many years.

This time even the bridge was submerged under water.

This devasted the villagers. But they had to do something.

Tourists started to visit the village.

That’s how the second bridge came into existence.

So they started to make more root bridges.

This would lead more tourists to village.

Which would help Nongriat prosper and develop .
