Principal’s Report (10 min) - Terry Fox Run raised almost $400 for Cancer Agency (kids did a great job personalizing the run and giving it their all) - Arts Reach leading three workshops (theatre, dance and print making) and trying to get a second batch of funding for more - Soccer has started with practises on Wednesday and the jamboree on Oct. 28th at View Royal Elem. www.vicwestpac.com

Victoria West Elementary School Parent Advisory Committee October 14, 2015, 6:30-8:00 pm General Meeting Minutes - Book Fair books have arrived and the Book Fair opens on Friday, Oct. 16th. If the school sells $1500 it receives 50% and if it sells over $3000 it receives 60%. Brianna Perry is organizing the volunteers so please see her if you’d like to help. The Book Fair will be open before school, at lunch and after school until 5:30 pm. - Choir Kids has started practising Thursdays after school. - Parent Teacher Conferences are being scheduled - Teachers will have three options for Report Card templates this year: Report Writer (typical but will disappear next year), CSL District template, or Fresh Grade portfolio (online, ongoing student learning template). Parents of more than one student may receive more than one type of reporting. The new options reflect the new curriculum coming next year which has many similarities to the current curriculum but is just grouped differently. - 2 more professional development days will be added to those already in the calendar to allow teachers the opportunity to review the new curriculum (the dates of the additional pro-d will be announced once they are known). -Code of Conduct: needs to have specific requirements that it doesn’t currently have so it has been rewritten and Deb is open to feedback (dispersed among group) - Final enrollment number: 215 students (11 divisions) - Coles books donated ~70 books to our library - TD donated $500 to our school for sports equipment and jerseys 5. Executive Reports a. President’s Report - AM absent

Treasurer’s Report (5 min) - $7945.75 in Chequing (fundraising account) - $5245.67 in Gaming account ($20 per student based on last year’s registration) - $532.04 in playground fund but 1/3 of the WWW money needs to be transferred in from Chequing - received $240 from Staples and $445 from Finn and Izzy - see end of Minutes for this year’s PAC budget Action item: CM to transfer money and talk to AM about alerting teachers to funds available AH & AB to publicly thank Staples, Finn & Izzy AM to see if we are still on Finn and Izzy’s fundraising list. c. VCPAC Report (Amy) (5 min) - Meeting happened on Sept. 29th at McKenzie Elementary

- met Piet Langstraat, Superintendent of Schools - Vic West Elem has been chosen as one of nine schools in the Well Ahead Initiative (voluntary and not definitive)

Victoria West Elementary School Parent Advisory Committee October 14, 2015, 6:30-8:00 pm General Meeting Minutes - The PAC Summit is coming up at Vic West Elem for PAC Chairs and Vice Chairs (AB, CF to attend in place of AM) October 22, 2015 from 7-9 pm. - The PAC Congress will be on Thurs. Nov. 19th from 6:30-9 pm at SJ Willis - The Vancouver Island Parent Conference in February has great resources on how to support your child see http://vipc.ca/ for more information. The PAC used to get a couple free tickets but will have to apply for the money this year. Action item: AB to look into details of applying for funds and share with Maria and AM.

6. Business/Action items arising from previous minutes: a. BBQ follow-up (Carolyn) - Possibly shorten next year from 4-6pm and add another activity (magician? Soccer?) b. Playground team (Aaren) - The Playground Committee is being formed; please let Aaren know if you are interested in helping! c. Crayola recycling program (Sarah) - There will be a bin in the office for collecting old markers soon. d. Storage unit (Carolyn) - would be located on the gravel area next to the Montessori instead of the back field as originally planned - looking at around a 20 foot unit but prices are higher than expected. e. Book fair (Brianna) - see the Principal’s Report f. Farm to School Grant info (Tori) - Table until next month g. Thrifty’s smile cards (Aaren) - raised $800 last year - pick up a card from the office and then load it before you run your groceries through the cash register. Thrifty’s donates 5% of your purchase to the school (from Thrifty’s money not your money). Action item: AH to check if we still have Fairways cards as well. h. 7. New business a. Chess Club volunteers needed (CM) - in addition to having a minimum grade level (grade 2?) and a cap on the number of participants (25?), volunteers are needed for the Chess Club starting in the new year on Mondays after school - Also need a teacher sponsor Action item: CM and Ms. Courville work together to help the Club thrive b. Movie night – choosing movie - happening on the Thursday before the pro-d day (November 19th) - A few titles were suggested, but it needs to have a ‘General’rating so that it is appropriate for all ages. Action items: AM to pick up popcorn during the day, AH to run concession along with Maria & Chantelle, AH to ask fb community for movie suggestions. Indigo Adopt A School (Regan) - Indigo (head of Coles and Chapters) is running two fundraisers for school libraries (ours definitely qualifies): 1. Love of Reading Fund: The school Librarian or Administrator needs to create an online profile for the school then details will follow: http://www.loveofreading.org/code/navigate.asp?Id=132 Ends with a gift card to purchase books for our library. 2. Adopt a School: At the end of summer 2016 a parent lead will go to an Indigo store to introduce the school and work on having the school adopted so that a percentage of their sales from September to Oct. 10th go to the school in the form of a gift card for books. Buddy bench (Vicki?) - suggested that a bench or area of the playground be designated as a safe place to go if students are looking for a friend to play with (idea came from a student at another school). www.vicwestpac.com

Victoria West Elementary School Parent Advisory Committee October 14, 2015, 6:30-8:00 pm General Meeting Minutes - Deb responded with idea to talk to students about their feelings on the playground and any ideas they might have to prevent loneliness. She will also speak to Emily, the school Guidance Counsellor. f. Business Networking Night (Vicki) - suggested a fundraiser for the school whereby the gym is rented and spaces are sold for $25 each. Local businesses are invited to participate and 15% of their sales goes to the school. - Possibly better suited for the community center? Building Resilient Neighbourhoods? http://resilientneighbourhoods.ca/activities/vic-west/vic-west-table g. Parking Safety (Amy) - need to reiterate to parents the importance of respecting the yellow curbs and keeping the intersection in front of the school clear so that there is maximum visibility. - need more parking enforcement? Action item: AH and AB to bring up issue in November newsletter (school’s or PACs?) as well as on facebook
