1. Introductions/Role of the PAC (10 min) o Executive: Aaren Madden was voted into the position of Vice‐President of the PAC. o The rest of the Executive remained as follows: Mercedes Calvert – President Treasurer – Carolyn Morris Communications Director – Amy Bronee Secretary – Coral Forbes o Members at Large ‐ none o What is the PAC? Overview – not necessary (no new members) Action: MC will list the VCPAC meetings for members to choose which they’d like to attend (on rotation) 2. Acceptance of the agenda (1 min) o Agenda accepted with slight revision that MC will speak on behalf of Kate Longpre of the Community Center and the Fun Run would be added. 3. Mercedes Calvert for Kate Longpre‐ Vic West Community Centre (5 min) o A free soccer class for 9‐12 year olds is being offered o Active Kids by the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (PISE) will be running at the Center with spots in two age groups. Subsidies are available. o This Sunday is the Orchard Planting (10‐12pm) and Corn Roast (12‐4) *bring toys to make zucchini car
4. Principal’s Report (10 min) o PISE will be coming to the school this month to allow students to try their programs over the lunch hour o 189 students plus 6 in the First Things First program are registered this school year. 26 of the students have designations. o Three new staff members: Mr. Edwards, Ms. Monahan and Mr. DiCicco o A Teacher for the grade 2/3 class is being hired. o There are 11 Educational Assistants each working 26 hours/week (on average) o Seismic upgrades to the school have been mostly completed over the summer. Additional work will be completed without disturbing the students. o Window upgrades are looking terrific and will save the District heating costs. o The Growth Plan has been signed and submitted by three Executive Members o This Friday’s newsletter will outline the dates of the Parent/Teacher Conferences; Meet the Teacher Night, etc. o PAC commented to Admin that the call out re: the classes coming together on Friday was very helpful to parents. 5. Executive Reports a. Treasurer’s Report (Carolyn) (5 min) o Account balances: $4467 in general chequing, $614 in gaming account (rolled over from last year), $251 in high interest/earthquake fund Action: CM to inquire about any leftover funds from the PAC support of Teacher’s consumables and field trips last year. b. President report (Mercedes) (5 min) o Nothing to report 6. Business/Action items arising from previous minutes: a. Review of Year End Event (5 min) o At the Executive Meeting the Year End Event was renamed the June Fun Fair o Happy with the Highlanders Soccer, cake walks, live music o Ice cream cones were missed by some participants o Discussed possibly having the food provided by the Lions Club (or whoever) and what that would mean for families that can’t afford to pay. The PAC would speak to the organization ahead of time and make sure that no one was left hungry. (10 min) b. Labyrinth – voting (Aaren) o Beth Threfall offered to paint a labyrinth on the ground behind the school above the rock wall near the 3 point ball game Voted to proceed with the labyrinth Actions: AM to arrange a parent education night and a short chat with staff at the school to explain the benefits and potential uses of the labyrinth AM asking around for free paint AB to post educational links for parents on the PAC website so that they can learn more
c. Biosolids Plant Viewfield Rd (Aaren) (5 min) o The CRD backed down from its proposal to locate a sewage sludge plant on Viewfield Road....yippee!! o Serious kudos to those who worked so hard to educate and inspire community members into action! d. Choir support ($500?) – voting (5 min) Voted to donate $500 to the Vic West Choir Kids program Action: AM to speak to the Manager, Stephanie Sartore, about the possibility of the choir performing at Vic West Fest in May. e. The Fun Run o Three students registered for the Fun Run on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 10:15 am. o Need 7 more to register by Sept. 27th so that the race shirts have the Vic West name o Important to have our school name out in the wider community and great for the students to have fun while getting healthy! Action: CF to send AB the posters and information for our website 7. New business (Mercedes) a. Movie Night date‐ Oct 24th? (2 min) o The first Movie Night will be on Thursday, November 21st o Need to have staff member present, so postponed October movie night to November o Also the Parent Education Night Restitution Workshop preview will be on the evening of October 3rd from 6:30‐8 pm. No cost to parents. Action: MC will confirm dates with Emily so that the PAC can promote and possibly host. b.
