After creating the extrusions and working on the landscape for the majority of the time, fitting the program into the existing landscape was easier to do so, “ultimately, the architectural recon struction of nature is not a call for the compete visual transformation of a city into mimetic natural form.it is not intended as a naturalistic architec tural project that masks a building in the rythms of distant natural time. it is not part of a vitalistic project that measures nature in fl ows and immanence.” (Gissen, 463). for this project I did not try to create a landform building, instead I wanted to create a building that could perfectly fit into the landscape that I created over the course of eight to tenweeks. as the project evolved I did not think of the landscape as any sort of architectural building. if I did it would have prevented me from creating a landscape that naturally met my own set of rules and requirements. the forms that we need to follow should derive from a set of rules that students need to apply to their individual projects. developing a project with specific rules allows us to create natural forms that we don’t certainly force to make but naturally rise from the figure ground

drawing. The reconstruction of nature can surely be achieved by referencing historical structures. “buidlings rarely stand alone. They are parts of rows, and as such they hardly exhibit their three-dimensionality. They fit inseperably into two-dimensional walls, and the walls are experienced as the side of urban canyons” the final program and the structures were naturally fitting into the landscape. COLLECTING a musuem for a ficticious collector of contemporary art

This project developed from the preexisting angles that were created by assignment one. For assignment 1, Connecting, we were given the task to connect squares that were placed on a given envelope. The squares were strategically placed on the envelope according to a different set of rules created by individual students. The concept carried out for project one was to create a sculptural piece that resembled the idea of tension and sound structure. It was so much that the project had to be carried out with the idea that it had to be an architectural piece but more of a structure that can be viewed from a distance or that people can walk under; however people were not allowed to walk into the structure. There was no given scale for the project, so the intention was to create a sculptural piece that was only to be viewed from the exterior. For the second assignment we introduce four volumes in which we would eventually negotiate spaces and moments that could be created when converging volumes with tunnels. The project took on the similar idea of creating the feeling of tension when placing volumes on top of the tunnels. This was executed by placing most of the volumes above a system

of tunnels that connected from the ground floor to the top floor. The result can be described as volumes that were punctured by skewers. The tunnels seemed to be too thin to carry the weight of the large looking volumes sitting in mid-air. The tunnels were intertwined with one another, one sitting above the other to allow the visitor to move under and above the tunnels themselves. The final project was realized from the plan view of the tunnels moving from one end of the envelope to the other. The first rendition of the model was simply to take the angles of the tunnels view from the top view. Then the concept began as the idea of creating a building in motion almost imitating the metro railway that runs through Culver City. The exterior form of the building seems to be in a constant motion. The first model allowed the design to venture out to another idea of carving the “box�. The angles of the walls were determined by different points assigned from project 2. The interior of the museum began to take form when the exterior was translated inwards. Using the 4 volumes from the previous project the interior spaces were formed from the overlapping.

SCIENTIST’S RETREAT San Gabriel Mountains

Mount Wilson Obeservatory Fall 2017

Mount Wilson is one of the peaks of the San Gabriel Mountains, located north of Pasadena. The summit is at 5,710 feet (1,740m). From the summit you have unobstructed views across the Los Angeles basin out to the Pacific Ocean. On an extremely clear day the Santa Catalina and San Clemente Islands are visible, with the horizon stretching another 30 miles beyond that. The Mount Wilson Observatory is located near the summit. For the first half of the twentieth century it was an astronomical center with 60-inch and 100-inch telescopes and two solar towers. Major astronomical discoveries happened here. In 1926 Albert Abraham Michelson measured the speed of light at Mt Wilson. Due to light pollution and the comparably low altitude, Mt. Wilson Observatory is no longer on the forefront or astronomical research. Major funding has shifted to internationally run telescopes in the Andes Mountains in Chile. In 1986 the Mt. Wilson Institute was formed with the focus to have the observatory function as an educational facility for the public as well as to support local junior scientists with their research. The lack of financial support in recent years led to parts of the facility being neglected.

The Design project’s topic is a scientist’s retreat located on a south east facing slope below the Mt. Wilson Observatory. The facility will be used mostly by astronomers, but it shall also entertain weekenders interested in astronomy and occasionally hikers. The site is on land that has been leased from the Angeles National Forest. Any new structure must be designed such that its construction, operation and maintenance do not impact the natural environment. They must reflect the requirements for exterior wildfire exposure. There is no water or sanitation. The scientist’s retreat was designed to be made of a modular strucutre that proposes the idea of being able to add extra program in the future. The goal of the design was to blend the public and private spaces. With the level of privacy shifting as one moves up the floor levels. The public spaces consist of an outdoor gathering space and a ada restroom, while the private spaces include a two bedrooms. The semi-public program consists of a office space and kitchen nook.

WEHO HOUSING West Hollywood

The studio aimed to augment knowledge of contemporary production of housing, including application of specific construction materials and systems in relation to tectonics, expression, and affordability; working knowledge about the dwelling, its internal order, relevant dimensional limits and ranges; an ability to relate multiple dwellings; and a social understanding of how architectural design affects the human environment. These goals were approached through an emphasis on analysis of the cultural and physical context of the city; the individual living unit and the communal space; the study of typology and precedent; and the ability to draw and model relations between contemporary formal concepts and historical shifts or adaptations. The property is located just south of Santa Monica Blvd. on North Spalding Ave. The site has two existing single family residences that will be assumed to be demolished for the new development. The site has 100’ of street frontage along N.

Spalding Street and the site is 130’ deep to the rear of the property and the adjacent alley to the north is 15’ wide. The site is to be assumed to be relatively flat with a slight slope from the rear of the property to the street. Site access will be from N. Spalding or from the alley if the required turning and back up distances are provided in the design. Adjacent powerlines are to be assumed will be moved underground as part of the development. The side walk is not included in the property and is 5’ wide with an additional 5’ of city owned park strip to the curb. The final design included two different unit configurations, single bedroom units and studio apartments. There’s a total of 6 studio aparments and 4 Single bedroom units. The overall design was intended to be three parallel bars that include community and private spaces in between.

THE INTROVERTED HOUSE 23rd Ave

Venice, CA Fall 2018

The archetype of the courtyard space is essential in many regions such as Spanish and Iranian architecture, its primary use was to allow for simple amenities such as allowing light and air into a house while at the same time creating a sense of privacy and tranquility. Courtyards vary in size, they can be found in densely populated cities around the world in which the courtyard is at the center of apartment complexes or they can be found in-between two properties in which the floor plans are U-shaped. In the suburban circumstance of today it is often difficult to design a small home with a courtyard because houses are often configured around mandatory setbacks from local legislations. However, the urban formula of a building that has small setbacks is to have a courtyard space that reconciles both indoors and outdoors. The lexical root of the word Courtyard derives from the root word “Gherd” which means “fencing off”. The courtyard creates a sequence of internal facades, it is an outdoor architecture that addresses itself rather than the outside world. It provides inward looking aspect as the dweller moves through the house. Courtyards can often be described as turning their back on the outside world, however they provide a lively stage for human interaction. It is both an intimate space and public space unlike any other programmatic space within a home. In this case the courtyards are small but they are used in order to visually and physically connect the occupants.

Using the site constraints, the house presents itself as walled off to the public. The occupants spend most of their home life secluded from the world. In this case the double courtyard allows for interaction between family members. This house was ideally designed for 3 family members of three generations, in this case a Grandfather, Father, and grandson. The programmatic scheme of the home was to create private spaces for each individual while also creating spaces that are commonly shared between two family members or all family members. The layout of the house is based on the relationships between the family members. All the spaces for social interaction are outdoor spaces. the idea that the people must interact with their innermost self in a place of reflection in order to get rid of all feelings of anxiety and stress produced by their everyday lives. French philosopher Gaston Bachelard, refers to spaces that allow one to into an oneiric space, a space in which people are able to daydream in. So each individual has their own private space in which they can spend time alone. The occupants move from the exterior to interior, vice versa, moving from areas of profound shadows to areas of gentle lighting. The courtyards allow the family members to stay connected either visually or socially.

JAN PALACH MEMORIAL Prague Spring 2019

Designed by John Hejudk , the Jan Palach Memorial was created to honor a student who self-immolated in protest againt the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. This was one of John Hejduk’s first structure to be permanently installed in a public square. The memorial consists of two boxes however one of them has spikes aiming directly up and the other has spikes that are slightly rotated towards the exterior. This assignment asked to analyze the relationship of the two structures and reinterpret them in a different manner. The plan cut of the spikes were then realigned at a center meeting point where the tips of the spikes were refigured to make a new object.The assignment asked to pair the drawings with poetry written by John Hejduk or poetry related to the events. This project served as a case study for the rest of the semester.

Elysian Valley Spring 2019

Since the channelization of the Los Angeles River, the river has always been an area of unwanted development. The urban sprawl of downtown Los Angeles pushed most of the industrial buildings and railroads along the LA River. Over the last few years there have been talks about revitalizing the river and the neighboring communities, in hopes of proving more open space, parks, and recreational areas. This project attempts to provide areas of released pressure as it is projected that the new revitalization projects will create unwanted overcrowding for the local communities. In order to provide more open space for the community of Elysian Valley, some of the industrial areas are going to be removed and replaced with open space and several facilities that activates the riverfront. A series of discon-

tinuous structures and objects are placed along both side of the river in order to create urban movement along the river. The objects are intended to amplify the current conditions of the neighborhood to address interacting social activities. Each area of focus will provide different amenities for its neighbors. The project intends to take familiar objects of the community of Elysian Valley in order to produce a new set of architecture that would be placed at the selected sites.The sites were designed to inhabit two objects that would produce different activities. The selected sites were spread out throughout Elysian Valley, Glassell Park, and Cypress Park, the idea was to enable people to move from one location to the next based on the familiarity with the objects.


This site plan locates several locations (pink) that are proposed as pocket parks and community spaces that would be developed and designed with the assistance of the community

The Psychogeographic Guide was originated by Guy Debord as a map that located the geographical environment of individuals sense of place. This map locates those spaces in Elysian Valley as areas that would eventually be familiar to the residents of that community. Areas that they become aware of the urban landscape.

Water Tower

The objects that were archived became examples and influenced the design of the future objects of the pocket parks. These are familiar structures that can be found in and around the area of Elysian Valley.


Spiral Staircase

The Spiral Staircase located on the 110 freeway can be seen as you drive into the Elysian Valley. Most people have seen it while driving on the freeway but few have actually used the staircase.

Dayton Street Colonnade

The old colonnade of the Dayton Street bridge has been left in rumbles for years. There are talks about occupying the structure and creating a new public space.


Water Tower

The G2 Site has several objects that are reminiscent of the old railyards. One of those objects was an old water tower that lays on the floor instead of being its upright position.
