Community advocate for PLHIV and founder of The Institute of Many (TIM), Nic Holas also received a Special Services Award for his work in furthering the conversation around supporting PLHIV and the U=U campaign in Australia.

W

hile our Annual General Meeting is a important time to report on the state of the organisation to our members, our AGM has become a much bigger event that honours our legacy, reflects on the most recent year, and acknowledge the meaningful contribution of the various individuals and organisations that support our work in advocating and supporting the health and wellbeing of our LGBTI communties. Following the formal proceedings for members of the organisation, this year’s Keith Harbour Address was delivered by one of our founding members and inaugural President Phil Carswell OAM.

Life membership to the organisation was awarded this year to Paul Kidd and Maureen O’Brien. Paul Kidd has been a longstanding advocate for people living with HIV and was instrumental in the repeal of section 19A of Victoria’s Crimes Act which unfairly targeted PLHIV. Maureen O’Brien started as our founding clinic nurse and she worked tirelessly with the community through the height of the epidemic to offer counselling and support to countless members of the community. Maureen also served on the boards of VAC/ GMHC and Fairfield Hospital. The Annual General Meeting also includes the Keith Harbour Address, this year delivered by the organisation’s founding President, Phil Carswell. The evening also saw the release of the 2017/2018 Annual Report The Future - complementing last year’s award-winning If report. Again, the publication featured a collection of portraits, shot by Virginia Cummins, of LGBTI community members and their hopes ‘for the future’.

Following the Keith Harbour Address, our coveted AGM Awards were presented for 2018. “Our work is supported by an incredible network of individuals and organisations every year,” said Thorne Harbour Health CEO Simon Ruth.

This year’s report also included the announcement of our newest location at 200 Hoddle Street.

The Annual General Meeting also included the announcement of the election outcome for the vacancies on the VAC/GMHC board. Paul Kidd as well as Assoc.
