ELIGIBILITY  

Winner announced by 11 August 2019

SUBMISSIONS Entries should be completed on our form: bit.ly/competitionvc

DETAILS 

JUDGING The submissions will be adjudicated by a 3-person adjudicating panel chosen by the Victoria Chorale, and will include the artistic director, a current member of the choir, and a professional musician not otherwise affiliated with the Victoria Chorale. The identity of the composers will not be divulged to the adjudicating panel before or during judging. The adjudicating panel reserves the right to not award the prize should no submission be of suitable quality, and also reserves the right to award Honourable Mentions. Honourable Mentions may be selected for public performance. The adjudicating panel’s decision is final, and may not be appealed.

Participation is open to composers of any nationality or age. All active members of the Victoria Chorale (defined as having sung with the choir for a performance from 1 January 2018 to the closing date for submissions, both dates inclusive) shall not participate in this contest.

 

One work of 2.5 to 8 minutes in expected performance time may be submitted. Multiple submissions by the same composer will not be reviewed by the adjudicating panel. The submitted composition must not have been previously published, awarded in other composition competitions, nor publicly performed. The composition can be for any unaccompanied voicing (e.g. SATB, SSAA or TTBB, with or without further divisi). Solo vocal parts (i.e. choral solos) are optional but should not exceed 30% of the total duration of the work if used. The text of the composition - in any language, sacred or secular, written for the occasion or pre-existing - should be available in the public domain. Otherwise, permission must be obtained in writing from the author or copyright holder of the text, and must be included in the submission. Text that is in a language other than English must be accompanied by translations. Scores must be submitted in PDF format made from scorewriting software (e.g. Finale, Musescore, Sibelius). All identifying marks (e.g. the composer’s name, personal website URLs) must not appear anywhere on the submitted score. Sample midi or mp3 format files of the score are optional but highly recommended, and may be used in the assessment of the submission. Compositions submitted shall be deemed the Intellectual Property of the submitting composer and any rights relating to this shall remain with the composer. The winner of the competition shall grant the Victoria Chorale the right to premiere and record the winning piece within 12 months of announcement of the winners. Should the Victoria Chorale be prevented from giving the premiere within this time frame, the composer shall be free to have the composition premiered elsewhere. Late, incomplete or illegible entries will be disqualified.
