A cold, unfriendly experience with us is about as likely as a snowball’s chance in… …well, you know where. Congratulations to all the great businesses named as finalists in the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce’s Business Awards 2013! And thanks to the Chamber for naming Cold Star as a finalist in the Business of the Year Award (76+ employees). It’s a huge honour to be recognized for our work and commitment to the communities we serve. At Cold Star Freight, our business is about keeping cool, but our customer service is as warm as it gets. And that’s all thanks to our terrific employees. We know that our services are only as good as the people who provide them, so we work hard to hire great people and keep them with us. Every day, they do us proud.

2013 GREATER BUSINESS AWARDS VICTORIA

Chair’s Message

CEO’s Message

Look around you tonight to get a glimpse at some of Greater Victoria’s most creative, innovative and just plain hard working business people. While it may not show from their beaming faces as they graciously accept their awards, behind those smiling faces are people who know it takes hard work to get things done. Take Keith Dagg for example, tonight’s lifetime achievement award winner. Here’s a man who even at the age of 76 is still tirelessly championing businesses in our region, helping promote them while securing funds for a number of charitable events close to his heart and the community. Keith, I admire your passion for business and zeal. To all the finalists, I offer you congratulations knowing luck has nothing to do with your being here tonight. You represent an outstanding selection of some of the best and brightest, and everyday your hard work helps develop and grow our local economy. As the Chamber Chair, I’m fortunate to get to learn about and see your successes on a regular basis. This evening, I get to share that experience with everyone in the room and those in our community at large. Everyone here tonight deserves a round of applause. These awards couldn’t exist without our local business community’s support. So thank you all.

Tonight’s awards recognize a remarkable group of individuals, ranging from eager newcomers to industry veterans. Regardless of age, gender, or experience, all of these people share one thing in common: they are all risk takers. Taking risks doesn’t necessarily mean a person is reckless, but it does mean he or she is willing to try something new, follow their instincts, and take on a challenge. Even with the best market research behind them, introducing a new product or service is never guaranteed success. However, without people taking that initial risk and putting themselves out there, no business would have a chance to succeed. I’d like to raise a glass to these risk takers, our finalists, who take chances every single day. Your reward is not only in being recognized here tonight, but also in knowing you are the driving force evolving and diversifying our local economy. Not every city can compete on a global scale, but Greater Victoria boasts a number of leading companies keeping pace with the rest of the world from right here in our backyard. Thank you for your tenacity, fearlessness, and dedication. I look forward to watching your continued success.

– Bruce Carter, CEO

2013 GREATER BUSINESS AWARDS VICTORIA

Board of Governors’ Message Keith Dagg is a force to be reckoned with in this town. He’s helped turn CFAX into the popular news station we know it as today, and had a hand in creating Vancouver Island’s first ever ad agency, the hugely successful Copeland Communications. More than that, Keith has turned his efforts to helping bring community sporting events to the center stage in Victoria, contributing so much to our local economy. Keith’s passion for our community is awesome. He can recall past clients the way you or I would talk about an old friend, telling you how he endeavored to advance their business to the next level. He’s helped some of Victoria’s biggest known companies become who they are today, and he continues to donate his expertise to non-profits in need.

Board of Governors Induction Ceremony 2012

There is no doubt in my mind that Keith’s success is attributed to his tireless work ethic. When asked about his secret to success, he tells young people to get out there and experience working directly with customers. He considers himself a graduate of the “school of hard knocks” having worked his way from the bottom to the top, learning from his mistakes and setting ambitious goals. On behalf of the Chamber Board of Governors, congratulations Keith, you’ve earned it!

Victoria Dragon Boat Festival Society supports co-op education L–R: WILSON CHUNG, MAGGIE FANG, PHILIP MACMAHON

Each summer, the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival draws over 1,000 paddlers to Victoria’s Inner Harbour to race against some of the fastest teams in North America. A huge amount of commitment makes this event a success, and the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival (VDBF) Society knows where to turn for help.

The VDBF Society, a Chamber of Commerce member, has been hiring co-operative education students from the University of Victoria and Camosun College for more than 10 years with fantastic results. “Co-op students have proved a very valuable resource,” says Mark Mawhinney, chair of the VDBF Society board of directors. “For a local non-profit organization putting on a complex festival, the co-op program enables us to increase our staff during key parts of the year.” This past summer, the VDBF Society hired three UVic and Camosun students as extra hands on deck. As a communications coordinator, UVic visual arts student Wilson Chung promoted the festival, worked with diverse stakeholders and wrote website messaging, social media content and speaking notes. “We received lots of media coverage and our Lights of Courage campaign raised over $20,000 for the BC Cancer Foundation,” he says.

and equipment for multiple events, including the Festival media launch, gala dinner and silent auction. She also successfully planned the Festival’s very first Night Market. “When I received positive feedback from paddlers, visitors, vendors and volunteers, I felt the value of my work,” she says. Camosun sport and fitness leadership student Philip MacMahon worked as a volunteer coordinator to recruit, train and oversee 500 festival volunteers. “My ability to recruit the best volunteer site crew I’ve ever seen as well as several high-level First Aiders is what I’m most proud of,” he says. MacMahon’s outstanding work term helped him land Camosun’s Yvonne Thompson Page Co-op Student of the Year Award. Welcoming co-op students to the team has helped the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival Society pull off a consistently successful annual event while providing students with work-integrated learning. “Working with such energetic, creative staff allows the Festival to grow and develop each year,” says Mawhinney. To learn more about the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival Society, visit www.victoriadragonboat.com.

GOVERNOR’S LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD CHOSEN by

THE CHAMBER’S BOARD OF GOVERNORS

2013 GREATER BUSINESS AWARDS VICTORIA

The biggest thing that happened at CFAX to put Clare and I where we were was the Chamber of Commerce. No question about it,… it turned our station around.”

profile

When most people ease into their 60s or 70s and indicate that they’re going to spend a little more time on golf and curling seasonally, you nod and smile, after all they deserve to relax and enjoy the fruits of their labour. When Keith Dagg indicates the same thing, the city as a whole perks up and takes notice, as he works with the PGA on the Times Colonist Island Savings Open Golf Tournament – the first stop in the Canadian golf tour – and with World Curling to bring in The Ford World Men’s Curling Championship. Keith is used to performing a little above the average. Born in Saskatchewan, he caught on early and by six was enjoying life in BC. Having taken on a number of small jobs in his youth, Keith’s drive to succeed is most clearly visible when he joined Imperial Oil at the age of 15. Over the course of 10 years, he worked his way up from the bottom – pushing the mail wagon – to the Area Sales Manager for southern Vancouver Island. Although Imperial Oil brought him to the island, it couldn’t force him to move. When they

wanted him elsewhere, Keith saw it as an opportunity to grow in a different direction and began a partnership with Clare Copeland. Keith partnered with Clare building CFAX and making it popular, profitable and so much more than the daytime only station it was when they purchased it in 1964. By 1973 Mel Cooper saw a good thing and bought in when Clare sold his shares. Never content to simply enjoy his success, Keith decided that Victoria needed an advertising agency and that he was the man to help fill that niche. Starting out with Mark Scott at Budget Rent-a-Car’s commitment to sign on as his first client, Keith, Clare and the dedicated team at Copeland Communications grew the agency – at its height 38 employees strong - until it was the largest on Vancouver Island. Over the years Copeland Communications worked with a wide variety of companies including Thrifty Foods, Payless Gas, Custom House Currency and Oak Bay Marine Group to grow and establish their business. After partnering with his eldest son Steven,

Founding Director of the Times Colonist Island Savings Open Golf Tournament.

Joined the Telus Community Board in 2009.

Helped found the Curling Foundation in 2005 after raising $250,000 at the 2005 World Curling Championships in Victoria. Director of Victoria Highlanders FC for four years Chair of the Victoria Academy for Curling

Copeland Communications became a pioneer in establishing that ad agencies work for companies both big and small, without having to go to Vancouver for “Madison Ave.” quality concepts. Keith, as well as the Dagg family as a whole, has a long history of community support and involvement. And as always, involvement was never done in a small way. His brother Raymond was the director of Expo ‘86. Middle son Jordon stepped up as a key volunteer at the FIFA World Soccer Championship, and his nephew Dan provides support for a wide variety of community initiatives including last year’s $4.3 million fundraiser supporting the David Foster Foundation. Along with all of the other work Keith has done over the years including probono work for non-profits and creating events that provide both revenue and prestige to the community, he is extremely pleased with the support he provided to the Chamber, working closely with Clare Copeland when he was the Chamber president and lending a hand whenever asked for help. That same relationship also helped Clare and Keith grow a somewhat struggling station, “The biggest thing that happened at CFAX to put Clare and I where we were was the Chamber of Commerce. No question about it,… it turned our station around. Because we

were out there working in the community, people saw us and they liked us and they liked what they saw in us, and gave us a chance, and we slowly got better announcers, better newsmen, and better advertising.” Unfortunately life wasn’t one big success story for Keith and he has had to overcome his own personal tragedies to get where he is today. He was hardest hit when he lost his youngest son to suicide in 2001 and as result chose to fight his way back from alcohol addiction. Once recovered, he channelled his energy into helping others. Keith talks extensively to kids and parents about encouraging them to reach for their dreams first and success will follow. In true Dagg spirit, he encourages coupling those dreams with a lot of hard work and elbow grease. Keith is truly the embodiment of that advice. He is a goal-oriented man. “Because I believe that life is pretty simple. Everybody should have goals, and you have sales goals, you have sales targets. I’ve always tried to get the people who work for me, or my clients, to set their goals. And then ask how are we going to get there? And then set out a plan of how we’re going to get there.” That clear and direct philosophy has served him well over the years and earned him the nickname “the Bulldozer” from his sister Velma.

Keith is a man with drive and goals. Whether it is looking after himself by training three times a week at five am, guiding his customers with clear common sense advice, bringing world-class sporting events to the city or enjoying time with his lifelong friend, and now wife, Deborah along with his extended family you’ll see Keith not resting on his laurels but standing and cheering in the winner’s circle. 150
