Comprehensive Building Design Studio: Renovating the CUA School of Architecture My final project at CUA was to redesign the architecture studio, the Edward M. Crough Center. Working as part of a small team of students, the goal was to create an extension to the building that seamlessly integrated the existing structure and also reflected the progressive nature of the School of Architecutre. The solution was a multi-level structure that incorporated the existing foot path adjacent to the Crough Center and engaged the slope of the campus landscape. What emerged was a design for series of spaces that focused on views, passage, and combined indoor and outdoor experience. Irregular shapes contrast the symmentry of the existing building and change the user experience as one progresses through the spaces.

Arch 401: Robert Smithson Learning Center Given the opportunity to design an educational facilty dedicated to a modern/ contemporary artist, I chose to make a tribute to the late Robert Smithson. Smithson’s most famous piece is Spiral Jetty, a dramatic piece that engages it surrounding landscape. Similarly, most of Smithson’s work unites the earth and viewer. I designed a community learning center to be located at 14th and Corcoran St. NW, Washington, DC. It engages the visitor in a process of descent through ever-deeper levels of programatic built-space. Combined indoor and outdoor circualtion reiterates the union between earth, sky, person, and structure.

Arch 202: Student Art Gallery

This design for a student art gallery features repeating, lower level bays for artwork display, a mezzanine for work space and admistration, and cozy, interspersed lounge nooks. Geometric forms and shared experience between upper and lower levels were the inspiration for this airy and stylized student showcase.
