PLEASE MENTION ICE CLUB & MAGAZINE WHEN CONTACTING ADVERTISERS. EDITORIAL: As I am sure you are aware watching the news it has been a terrible year so far in Europe weather wise with extremely violent storms, devastating high tides and damaging waves. Winds approaching hurricane force have caused millions of pounds’ damage and widespread power cuts with thousands affected by flooding and having to be evacuated from their homes. What I do not like to hear is their extra stress due to risk of looting, I say Europe as most of us see UK news and not so aware of others affected. It has been horrendous and our sympathies must go out to them all. Terry Smith Editor Terry Smith Phone 951 276 690 Mobile 677 656 319 Email: terrysmith@siberme.com

Would you call yourself a bit of a gardener or perhaps would like to have a try at it? Do you love flowers, plants, trees, shrubs, cacti and would like to know more about them? Perhaps you may have some good gardening tips to share? If so, how about joining the ICE Gardening Club. (There is no extra fee). If you have a garden, balcony, terrace or even a window box, we would be pleased to welcome you. As a member, you can join us visiting various Garden Centres, enjoy walks around beautiful Botanical Gardens and sometimes visit a member’s garden. We also meet in the ICE clubhouse to discuss possible locations to visit, help members with any gardening problems, listen to invited speakers, watch demonstrations, gardening films and offer various plants and cuttings. We meet the second Tuesday of every month and our first meeting this year will be on Tuesday, 11th March at 11.00am in the ICE Clubhouse. We look forward to meeting up again with past members and hopefully some new members will come along and join us. Any suggestions of future locations to visit will be considered and any gardening problems can be discussed and advised on – in fact we would be happy to hear anything to do with gardening that you think could be of interest to us. We also welcome any cuttings or excess plants to share amongst our members. Submitted by Sandy Avis 7

Scam of the Month – March 2014 - THE COMPETITION SCAM People have received emails stating that their email address was the star pick from an automated ballot system which means they are entitled to receive the grand reward of 2.5 million dollars. The suspect email says that the prize is from a reward program for the ‘patronage of internet services’ and the promotional draw is conducted in the Netherlands. In order to claim prize, email asks the recipient to send personal details out immediately. Some general advice on spotting scam emails. Be aware that emails from reputable bodies such as Banks and other financial institutions will always address you by your name. HM Revenue and Customs website contains advice on avoiding scams and also has some interesting examples of scams such as Phishing. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/security/index.htm Submitted by Peter Dowd When in the UK, ever needed to put UK postage stamps on a letter or parcel for someone within the UK and you have run out of UK stamps? Now you can print your own stamps by following the instructions on the following Post Office web site :- http://www.royalmail.com/personal/uk-delivery/online-postage - private The system allows for various weights and sizes of both letters and parcels and you can choose first or second class postage and various delivery confirmation options. The cost is the same as normal stamps and you can add the address to produce a nice neat label to print directly onto an envelope or an A4 sheet, using a normal printer. Submitted by Ron Sykes "You can now book and pay for your Rail Tickets in Spain and throughout Europe using the following Web Site:- www.loco2.com The site is very easy to use, you can print your ticket at home, its free and it’s in English. No excuse now for not taking that long planned trip to Madrid, Barcelona or even Paris on the TVG. If you choose the right dates and times the prices are quite reasonable" Submitted by Ron Sykes From the 24th January 2014, all UK passport applications have to be filled in on line. (https://passportapplication.service.gov.uk/ips-olc/) Once the application forms are completed they must be printed, signed by the applicant and then sent to the IPS at Belfast. Payment is made on line at the time of application. Two photographs must accompany the application. Unless your appearance has changed substantially since your last passport photograph there is no need for a countersignature. Any supporting documents must also be sent with the application. In the case of lost or stolen passport a Police report, together with a certified translated copy must be sent to Belfast. The original Police report must also be faxed to the embassy at Madrid as soon as possible after the loss is reported (Fax: 917 146 403). A child's first passport must include the Spanish birth certificate with a certified translation, the LONG birth certificate from one parent plus details of the child’s grandparents, the date of their marriage if known, their full names and dates and places of birth. The level of detail requested has caused some consternation, the best advice is to complete as much as you can, the more detail you supply the faster will be the background checks that are made whenever a passport is applied for, renewed or replaced. Needless to say we at Estepona Port Business and Internet Centre are more than happy to assist you make your application, obtain translations and send off your forms to Belfast. PAST EVENTS Friday 14th February - Valentines Party at Clubhouse Well we all got dressed up for this event, and why not? The club also looked great, thanks to all those arriving early in the morning to set the tables. Valentines’ gifts were distributed to the ladies, chocolates of course! Once drinks were obtained we all sat down to a lovely 3 course meal, and to give our catering teams a well earned rest for a change, all prepared and served by outside caterers. A welcome return to Mar and her team from de la Mar of Estepona Port, a great favourite restaurant with many of our members. Tasty soup starter, beef or lamb roast dinner with selection of vegetables, or fish main course. Finished off with a selection of sweets. Thanks to Mar, Anthony and all their team. Music for dancing was by Daniela, great favourite at the club, always playing the right music for our era and keeping the dance floor buzzing. And not forgetting Les, the event also being a celebration of his Birthday. Some amusing ditties being sung by his buddies. Thanks Audrey and Les for donating the music, and the celebration drinks. Les having enjoyed a 9km ramble in the morning was looking well in (unusually) ‘trousers!’ Thanks to Mac, Jackie and Joan for manning the busy bar although Joan found time for plenty of dancing during quiet periods. Not forgetting Doug for the organising. Estepona Port

Wednesday 19th February - Ladies and Gents who Lunch out 25 Juliets attended this event at Cocomo for a good value meal, price negotiated to include a drink at your table and the price of the tip. Excellent service and food could not be faulted. This was the first visit of the Juliets at this restaurant and sure they will want to return. Well done Maggie, event not easy to organise due to poor health. 13 Romeos once again returned to the Golden Wok, a great favourite and good value, all vote this the best buffet Chinese Restaurant in the area. Thanks Doug for organising. 13

IBERIAN FUNERAL PLANS SL: There are at least two certainties in life, death and taxes. Having to arrange a funeral in a foreign country for a loved one can be very distressing. We all know, from our own experience or that of close friends, how traumatic it is to have to cope with paperwork, officials and bureaucracy at a time when we are emotionally vulnerable. And yet, that is precisely the situation that we find ourselves in when there is no funeral plan in place. This time of grief can be made much easier on your family by having a pre-planned and pre-paid funeral plan ready in the event of your death. Iberian Funeral Plans SL. is one of the key professionals in the sector and after dramatic expansion the company has opened a further two new offices this year one in Manilva and another in Ayamonte. As Managing Director Stephen Nelson explains: “We want to be able to offer the full range of benefits of an Iberian Funeral Plan to everyone, irrespective of where they live. That is why Iberian has developed a network of locations throughout Spain and its islands” By pre-planning now you fix the cost of your funeral at today’s prices, which are inflation proof irrespective of how long you live. Payment can be made in Euros or sterling either as a lump sum or by a deposit and regular installments which attract no interest. Our plans ARE NOT subject to IVA, furthermore we do not charge a set up fee, administration fee or interest – should you wish to pay by installments. All our plans are transferable and fully operational in the U.K. and other EU countries. Iberian is a fully operational registered SL company and all funds are held in secure accounts with Santander and BBVA bank. We use the services of several major funeral directors enabling us to operate to the highest possible standards. Please contact for further information or a no obligation chat or visit from one of our representatives. 952 490 690 or 952 595 691 Mobile 646 924 509 or visit our website www.iberianfuneralplans.com

Surprising China (continued from previous magazine edition) On our second day in Beijing, we travelled some 50 km north to visit a section of the famous Great Wall of China. The wall was built by various Emperors over a period of some 2,000 years commencing in the seventh Century BC and was meant to keep out marauding tribes from the north of China. It eventually extended for some 5,660 Km often running along high mountain ridges. The wall is typically about 4 meters wide and some 10 meters high and has a walkway running along the top with Guard and Signal towers spaced every few hundred meters. Some of the sections of the wall have been restored as a tourist attraction and the one we visited was the Mutianyu section. Access was by a cable car and stepping from the cabin revealed the astonishing sight of the wall. Once again we were in the middle of the tourist season and hundreds of Chinese families were making the pilgrimage to see the wall. A famous Chinese proverb states “One who fails to reach the Great Wall would not be regarded as a Hero” I set off to walk a short distance along a steeper section of the wall leaving Bea to rest for a while. Whilst I was away Bea was approached by numerous Chinese people asking to have their photo taken with her along with the family! Foreign tourists are starting to visit China more frequently but we are still something of a novelty. It is a truly impressive sight to see the wall snaking along the mountain ridges for as far as the eye can see. The Wall has, of course, attracted dozens of tourist shops all selling virtually the same mementoes, and yes I did get the Tee shirt! The tourist authorities had made a big effort to build very modern looking toilet blocks but the smell emanating from them was enough to put us off using them. As a matter of interest, according to numerous Astronauts and contrary to popular belief, the Great Wall is NOT visible to the naked eye from space. Following the visit to the Great Wall, we returned to Beijing for a visit to the 2008 Beijing Olympics Park. The main building of interest was the famous “Birds Nest” stadium used for the opening and closing ceremonies. Our guide proudly advised us that the structure was made entirely of Chinese steel. He was somewhat chastened when I told him that the design was by a British Architect (In fact I later discovered it was actually a Swiss Architect!) The next day we took a two hour flight down to XIAN, the ancient capital of China to see the famous Terracotta Army. The flight was on a brand new Airbus and, much to our surprise, all announcements were in English as well as Chinese. All the airports we visited in China had director signs in English as well as Chinese, so finding our boarding gates was not a problem. The Terracotta Army is housed in a huge complex and has lots of exhibition halls as well as the actual “pits” where the figures are located. The army was built on the instructions of Emperor Qin Shi Huang and was meant to be for protection in his afterlife. There are over 8,000 separate figures composed of infantry, Archers, Officers, horses and carriages. They are all lined up in proper military formation in several pits which were covered over with timber roofs before burial. Emperor Qin was the first Emperor of China and the one who pulled together six different areas of China. >>31 30

>>30 This was done very brutally and using well trained troops, hence Qin’s faith in his afterlife army. Each figure was made slightly larger than life-size in order to appear fiercer and each figure was provided with real weapons. Unfortunately the weapons have mostly disintegrated aver the period of some 2,200 years, but sufficient parts have been recovered to establish that the army at that time was using quite sophisticated weaponry especially trigger action crossbows. This was in a period 200 years BC when soldiers in the British Isles were still using swords and daggers. The overall burial site and figures were made by some 720,00 conscripts over a period of some 38 years. The heads of the figures were made separate to the bodies and it is believed that the faces were based on the workers who were making the heads. All the figures were originally painted in bright colours. When the figures were unearthed the colours were still evident but faded very quickly in the air and so the Authorities decided to rebury them until they could work out how to preserve the colours. The actual burial mound of the Emperor has not yet been excavated. It is believed that the tomb is protected by a layer of Mercury and other protective features. All the details of this protection were lost as the Engineers who designed it all were buried alive along with the Emperor and his Ladies!! Such was the brutality of the Emperor that after a period of only four years after his death the pits were unearthed and many of the figures were smashed up by the disgruntled populace. A team of dedicated archaeologists is slowly rebuilding the smashed up figures and each one can take up to three months to reassemble. Recently the archaeologists have taken to the use of computer imaging which makes the piecing of broken parts much easier as the computer makes a good effort to decide which pieces fit together. The figures were rediscovered as recently as 1974 by three farmers who were excavating for a well. It is still possible to meet with one of the farmers who will pose with you for a photograph and sign a commemorative book. I must say the “farmer we met looked suspiciously young to me! On our return to Xian in the evening we visited a Chinese opera show which was meant to be a story of the Chinese dynasties and a Chinese dumpling extravaganza. The theatre was set up as a dinner show with around six hundred guests. Before the show started, a chorus of Happy Birthday struck up and a birthday cake was paraded to our table with a decoration pouring out flames and smoke which suddenly burst into a number of flowers each with a sparkling candle. I was then crowned with a Burger King type cardboard crown and performed a ceremonial cutting of the cake to loud applause from the assembled audience. The cake had been arranged by our tour guide and we were more than surprised to arrive back at our Hotel to find another cake provide by the Hotel. Looks like birth dates are no secret in China. Next time we will describe our visit to the Giant Panda research centre in Chengdu and our trip to the Wild Goose pagoda which is reputed to be where vegetarianism originated. Why not come along; We meet Monday mornings no later than 9.45am for a 10.00am start. Late arrivals cannot be guaranteed a game. Players are organised by ‘ranking’ in order to have teams of more or less equal standing. Most matches are played over 16 ends but this can be 18 by mutual agreement of all players. Dress code is predominantly white but the critical factor is footwear. Shoes must be smooth-soled with no ‘pimples or crinkles’. This is to prevent undue damage to the playing surface which is the duty of all to maintain in good condition. Beginners coached by prior arrangement to achieve the required level to compete. The title was deliberately chosen as most of us play Monday only. We are an informal group and not ‘Officially Recognised’. Hence this gives us a degree of license when interpreting the rules as officially prescribed. Alan Whiteman Bowling at Best! Fun at Rest! Wine at Test! Have a good time! Alan International Club of Estepona - Golf Society We play twice a week, Tuesday and Friday, at Casares Costa Golf Club where our members benefit from discounted green fees. The twice weekly competition is organised on a ‘Roll- Up’ basis and we play individual stableford, using full handicaps. Tee off times vary between 08.15 and 08.30am, dependent upon the time of year, and on a good day we can have 12 or more players rolling up. It’s all very friendly, light hearted and is open to all. We traditionally have two major competitions a year. The Spring Cup, Stableford Competition at Dona Julia Golf Club 22nd April 2014 . The Autumn Cup will take place during October. These two competitions have become great social events with a very popular celebratory luncheon after each. The Ice Club Order Of Merit competition. The trophy will be awarded to the player recording the best 10 individual cards achieved at the Tuesday and Friday ‘RollUps’ during the 12 months between each Spring Cup. In addition we also arrange ‘Away Days’, every 4 to 6 weeks, to other golf courses within the local area. It is always a treat to play at other clubs and we are usually given a preferential rate. Keep your eye on the club magazine and web site for details of all activities. If you would like to get involved, phone or enrol on our e-mailing list. The schoolteacher taking her first golfing lesson. "Is the word spelt p-u-t or p-u-t-t?" she asked the instructor. "P-u-t-t is correct," he replied. "Put means to place a thing where you want it. Putt means merely a vain attempt to do the same thing." 32

Very Interesting: Your tongue is the only muscle in your body that is attached at only one end. Zero is the only number that cannot be represented by Roman numerals. The tooth is the only part of the human body that cannot heal itself.

Beef With Bean Sprouts Ingredients (Serves 4): 1lb Rump steak 1 Red pepper 2 Level tablespoons cornflower 1 Large egg 2 Level teaspoons chilli seasoning 5 Tablespoons oil ¾lb Bean sprouts 2 Tablespoons soy sauce 1 Tablespoon sherry ½ Level teaspoon salt Preparation: Place the meat in the fridges ice making compartment or the freezer for half an hour to become very firm - this makes for easy slicing. Cut the meat across the grain into strips about ½ inch wide and 2 inch long. Deseed the pepper and cut into same size strips. Put cornflower and chilli into basin add beaten egg and blend into smooth batter, add meat and coat. Cooking: Heat the oil in deep frying pan or wok and when hot add the meat. Fry quickly turning the meat in the oil until crisp, about 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from pan. Tip the bean sprouts and red pepper and stir fry over hot heat for 1 minute. Add the soy sauce, sherry, salt and meat, stir fry for a further minute. Serve at once as bean sprouts tend to go limp if kept hot.

JUST FOR A SMILE

Beer contains female hormones! Yes, that's right, FEMALE hormones! Last month, scientists released the results of a recent analysis that revealed the presence of female hormones in beer. Men should take a concerned look at their beer consumption. The theory is that beer contains female hormones (hops contain Phytoestrogens) and that by drinking enough beer, men turn into women. To test the theory, 100 men each drank 5 pints of beer within a one (1) hour period. It was then observed that 100% of the test subjects, yes, 100% of all these men: 1) Argued over nothing. 2) Refused to apologize when obviously wrong. 3) Gained weight. 4) Talked excessively without making sense. 5) Became overly emotional 6) Couldn’t drive. 7) Failed to think rationally, and 8) Had to sit down while urinating. No further testing was considered necessary! Tell this to the men you know to warn them about drinking too much beer! Freshness you can hear and smell: We went to Carrefour last evening and they have brought out some new "ambience" for us while visiting their supermarkets (the one here that we shop at). They feature an automatic water mister to keep produce fresh. Just before it goes on, you hear the distant sound of thunder and the smell of fresh rain. When you pass the milk, you hear cows moo and you experience the scent of fresh cut hay. In the meat department there is the aroma of charcoal grilled steaks and sausages. In the liquor department, the fresh, clean, crisp smell of tapped San Miguel. When you approach the egg cases, you hear hens cluck and cackle and the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying. The bread department features the tantalizing smell of fresh baked bread & cookies. We don't buy toilet paper there anymore.
