Editorial So hopefully when you read this summer has finally arrived, it seems to have been a bit of a mixed year weather wise. It seems strange that weather was more settled over the Christmas and New Year period. So off to the beach, don’t forget your sun cream and cover up in the hottest part of the day. And watch out for the midges, they don’t mind who they attack. We have a problem with electricity at the club, Endesa in their wisdom have lowered the potential which is causing great problems for the kitchen volunteers as they can no longer use the electric oven. So please have patience with the kitchen volunteers until the problem is resolved. It was overheard at one of our lunches recently that how much better ICE lunches are compared with those served to a rival club in the area. Vice-Presidents Letter - June This month I have the honour as vice-president to write the monthly letter. Doug and Joanna are enjoying a holiday in the USA visiting their family. Looking back during May we had enough nice events to keep everyone happy. The ramblers finished their season with a well deserved BBQ and the quiz nights continue to be a great success, same goes for the film nights. Joan took a full coach up to Cadiz on a marvellous trip around the old town. Another of the highlights of May was the Golden Wedding anniversary party for Vic and Margaret. June we have exciting events in store, the most important being our Summer Extravaganza which will be held in the Camping Bella Vista, no dress code for that night, a sumptuous buffet dinner and an excellent five (!!) man band will entertain us that evening. We have a raffle with several very good prizes. A coach is be available for those who feel that driving will too much of a hassle. There will be a trip to Fuente el Piedra later in the month and a late Midsummer night party at the end of the month. Unfortunately we have problems at the moment with the electricity supply and we do ask you all to be really frugal with switching on fans and certainly not using the air conditioners. Monthly Computer Tips – June 2013 - Email Tips Secrecy 1: Ever wondered what the difference between CC and BCC is in email? CC stands for "carbon copy," while BCC stands for "blind carbon copy" -- everyone on the CC or BCC list will receive a copy of the email. However, every recipient can view the CC list, while the BCC list is completely private. If you BCC someone on an email, they'll receive a copy of that email, but no other recipients will know. The “To” can be left blank and the email will still reach all the BCC or CC recipients. However having an empty "To:" line is actually a mark against your email when it comes to making it through various spam filters. So we'd recommend putting something there. It's unclear whether having the recipient be the same as the sender is a mark against you or not. We tend to think not because it's common to do so for exactly the reasons that we're dealing with here. If you have a second e-mail address, maybe, you could use that to be certain. Thus, our ultimate recommendation is to send the email "To:" yourself and BCC all the recipients who you really want to keep from seeing each other's email addresses. Secrecy 2: How often do we receive an email that has been forwarded and includes a long list of email addresses of people to whom the email has been sent? We strongly recommend that if you are forwarding emails you follow these procedures. I. Click on the button to forward the email. II. Delete all the existing correspondent email addresses which are displayed in the email you have received. (Note: This can only be done after clicking on the forward button.) III. Use the BCC advice above to forward it to your friends. Permanently Deleting Emails: If you are using an email client such as Outlook or Windows Live Mail, normal deletion of emails only transfers them to the Deleted folder. In order to permanently delete them you must carry out a second routine and delete them from the Deleted folder. This is a safeguard against accidentally deleting the wrong email. However if you have an email in your inbox you can permanently delete it from there by highlighting it, holding down the Shift key and pressing Delete on the keyboard. App of the Month - XE Currency (iPad, iPhone, Android, Windows Phone) This App provides up to date exchange rates for all world currencies. A maximum of ten can be displayed permanently on the screen and there is the option to convert from your chosen currency. (In addition, there are a number of tools listed, although some require Adobe Flash.)

Remember the Computer Group meets at the Clubhouse on the third Friday of the month at 11.00am. No need to book – just turn up. We have WiFi broadband internet available, so why not bring along your laptop / netbook / ipad etc. If you have any questions or suggested topics for the future please email us vicloughran@siberme.com or peterdowd@siberme.com 8

June Scam of the Month - BT SCAM There have been reports of people with a BT phone account who have received an email purporting to be from the company. It was titled "action required" and said the last payment hadn’t been processed properly. This was either because personal details had been changed or there was an error when paying the bill. To resolve the situation it asked for further details, and included a link. This led to a non-BT website from which the details could be misused. While the example here is based on BT, you could be receiving such emails apparently from any companies that you deal with. Just be aware and, if you do click on the link, double check the web address which is displayed in the address bar. (It should begin https//.) It will probably bear no relation to the company who apparently sent the email. International Club of Estepona - Golf Society Established in 2003 by Les Jinks, at the request of then president, Anne Hardwick, golf has become a very popular activity within the club. We play twice a week, Tuesday and Friday, at Casares Costa Golf Club where our members benefit from discounted green fees. The twice weekly competition is organised on a ‘RollUp’ bases and we play individual stableford, using full handicaps. Tee off times vary between 08.15 and 08.30am, dependent upon the time of year, and on a good day we can have 12 or more players rolling up. It’s all very friendly, light hearted and is open to all. We traditionally have two major competitions a year. The Spring Cup, held in April, and The Autumn Cup in October. These have become great social events with a very popular celebratory luncheon after each. This year sees the introduction of The Ice Club Order Of Merit competition. The trophy will be awarded to the player recording the best 10 individual cards achieved at the Tuesday and Friday Roll- Ups during the 12 months between each Spring Cup. Keep your eye on the club magazine and web site for details of all activities. In addition we also arrange away days, every 4 to 6 weeks, to other golf courses within the area. It is always a treat to play at other clubs and we are usually given a preferential rate. If you would like to get involved, phone or enrol on our e-mailing list. Annette’s Adventures Preface This month we start a series of articles about one of our long standing members Annette Holmes’s drive across Europe and Turkey to Iran. A drive that was estimated to take 12 days, that Annette cut by 5 days, husband Charles told her that perhaps she was a frustrated racing driver! Annette spoke of her reminiscences during a travel talk to Halesowen Business and Professional Women’s Club. During this talk Annette described two journeys she had made which must be rated as ‘marathon drives.’ On the first she and her husband Charles drove from Singapore to England, travelling through no less than nine countries. Pakistan refused entry to Charles, apparently because the description ‘Government Official’ appeared on his passport. So it was decided that Annette would drive across Pakistan on her own whilst Charles flew to Kabul in Afghanistan where she would rejoin him. For the journey she had been told there would be signposting in English, but this was not the case and she drove for hours without seeing another vehicle. The journey passed through the Khyber pass and when she reached Kabul she broke her rule of never allowing anyone on the journey in her car. When she saw two policemen ahead of her she pulled up and inquired the way to Charles hotel. One officers offered to take her so she let him get into the car. Later Charles took a civilian appointment in Iran while Annette decided to do a solo journey, again by car, from England to Tehran. Preparations were made for this journey included getting drugs from her doctor for the treatment of food or water poisoning - hazards that had to be taken into account. Self discipline, quick reactions, a practical outlook on life and a sense of humour were all-important for a women undertaking a solo journey of this kind. Annette stressed.

Many a Mile Her own words by Annette Louise Holmes A claim to be an independent women in my own right! Part 1 - ‘The Early Years’ From childhood I had an intense interest in people of all lands and how they lived, and was quite determined to so steer my life and career that would take in as much travel as possible. As a teenager, it seemed to me that boys came off rather better than girls in being freer from convention, to travel or go off on adventures without being accompanied by adults. My father, a lovable character, ’somewhat Victorian’ in his approach to daughters regarded it as unthinkable that I should wish to go off camping with a girlfriend - in a desire no doubt to prove to myself just how self-sufficient I could be. >>Page 11 10

<<<Page 10 It was not until I was sixteen that I finally persuaded my father that I had sufficient knowledge learned from Girl Guides, Red Cross Cadets and the Camping Club of Great Britain and Ireland, plus the inherited common sense of my Yorkshire mother, to make a start in my bid for independence. Father put a number of well-meaning obstructions in my way - perhaps to find out how well I could use my own initiative. I had to have to have my own camping equipment, earn sufficient money to cover all possible emergencies and have at least three friends with me so that there would be four of us altogether. In a surprising short time I had achieved all my fathers terms, much to his great surprise, and so followed many adventures within the shores of England, each one beginning with copious lists of requirements and arrangements to be made, and all the advance planning that each trip involved. I learned that good planning made the difference between the success or failure of a trip. My father also taught me how to be a good packer - this to be truthful I’ve never been good at when travelling ‘light’. At twenty years of age I felt I’d like to spread my wings and go abroad, yet again I had a battle with my father - who assured me that daughters didn’t just wander alone on the continent unchaperoned - hadn’t I heard that strange things happened to girls going solo? Of the white slave traffic? And he refused to discuss the matter further. I decided it was policy to compromise, for in truth I respected his wishes and concern for my well being. Seeing an advertisement in The Times stating that an English solicitor and his Swiss wife took paying guests into their villa in Italy, I took up the references offered - all very suitable for a single unaccompanied young lady, and placed all the information in front of father. This time I had complete approval, and so my wandering began. The only time my father felt somewhat concerned was reading between the lines of a postcard I’d sent home. I received a swift telegram in reply suggesting that I would be unwise to lose my heart to an Italian gentleman - son of one of the Pope’s doctors - I had been introduced to, and had become rather fond of. Undoubtedly the perfect setting for dancing under the stars on the Mediterranean coast had played its part! However common sense prevailed. Indeed we corresponded for four years and have sweet memories. Three years later I was fortunate enough to be selected to teach for the British Admiralty at the Naval School in Malta where I organised a home of my own, now I was truly independent. Malta was an excellent stepping off place from which I visited Sicily, Capri, and North Africa. I was very spoiled by the Royal Navy officers of the fleet whose squadron visited the island - one of whom I later married. From the start it was evident that I had met a kindred spirit - a man who respected a woman as his intellectual equal, and who also respected my own personal independent streak. Indeed it is true to say that my husband was always my greatest ally. Since my marriage in 1954 I have travelled many thousands of miles across the globe, fulfilling myself both through my husband, and on my own. To be continued next edition 11

PAST EVENTS Tuesday 23rd April - Spring Golf Cup and Lunch Off with the old and on to the younger combination of Alan and Doug, which turned out to be very good. Another great day for all with plenty of new ideas. We have come a long way since 2003, at that time Anne Hardwick was President when she asked me if I would run a golf group, we started with approximately 12 golfers. We also thought it would be nice to have a lunch with family and friends at the presentation of the winners. The first event was held at Estepona Golf with a turn out of 30 members. It has since grown year by year. I believe members now look forward to the comradery of the lunches. The meal on this occasion was excellent thanks to Doug and Miguel of la Choza restaurant who opens up especially for us on their normal rest day. Many thanks go to one of our advertisers; Black Tower who sponsored the raffle (see their advert on page 19 of your magazine). THE WINNERS WERE: 1st Phil Pearce (n/m). 2nd Ron Pegrum (Cup Winner). 3rd Terry Bryne. Top lady Mariska Turkinburg Nearest Pin Evelyn Bryne hole 16 - and. Les Jinks hole 10. Alan produced an excellent selection of prizes, many thanks. We now look forward to the Autumn Cup on the15th October at Valle Romano (see page 14 of your magazine). I would personally like to thank you all for the plaque that was presented to me, it was a very pleasant surprise and brought back great memories. Les Jinks Friday 26th April - Coach Trip, Bees and Honey It turned out to be a nice day weather wise, so after our respective coach pickups and a stop for breakfast it was off to Rancho Cortesano, Museo de la Miel las Abejas near to Jerez and close to the race track. We were greeted by Fran, an English teacher, so no language problems. First we were guided to a lecture room and with slides we got to know about the history of apiculture, the products of the hive and the amazing world of honey bees. We then went outside where a very young school party was off on a tour of the hives, very amusing seeing the young children dressed in bee keepers outfits obviously too big for them. Then it was our turn to look equally ridiculous dressed up as though we were experts in bee keeping. Suits that did not fit, plastic bags on feet, and floppy hats that dropped over eyes, see the pictures on the web site. So off to the hives, it soon became apparent why we were dressed in this way when the honey racks were removed from a hive and a swarm of bees followed it, attendant trying to keep them calm using smoke. After removing our outfits the final stop was the shop where we could taste various types of honey and pollen the latter must be an acquired taste (bit like tasting dust!). Many products were purchased by members, so then happily back to the coach. Our final stop before retuning home was at Restaurant Gabriel that was close by, an excellent menu del day with well organised service. It appeared that the restaurant also doubled as the local butcher with fresh meat on display including, hanging in a cooler, sides of beef. So we were not ‘stung’ by this club trip, well organised and thanks go to Richard and Julie. Friday 17th May - Computer Group - Presentation Android Thanks to Colin Gearon for his interesting presentation and answering members queries with regard to Android. Twelve members of the computer group attended. 12

Saturday 27th April - Italian Themed Supper An excellent evening was enjoyed by about 30 members. The four course menu consisted of Mushroom Risotto, Tournedos Rossini, Tiramisu and Cheese: planned, prepared and cooked beautifully by Aileena and helped by her hard-working assistant Anna. We sat at one long table (Italian family style) which was dressed in red, white and green to represent the colours of the Italian flag. Italian music played in the background and a convivial amount of chatting accompanied! Thank you very much ladies, Colin and Debra behind the bar and Terry for help with the setting up of the tables and printing of the menus and place names. Submitted by Margaret Whittley and as seen on club Facebook Tuesday 14th May- Gardening Club Meeting at Martin Garden Centre in San Enrique. Over coffee, a useful discussion took place where members were able to exchange useful tips and help with gardening problems. It was time then to wander around Martin’s. Plants, shrubs, flowers - even bags of very cheap oranges were soon purchased. Some of the members then moved a little bit further along the road onto Contratos Garden Centre which was also much explored with the option of tapas or menu de dia in the Restaurant next door. It was yet another enjoyable get together. The dates for future Gardening Club meetings are: June 11th, July 9th, August 13th, September 10th, October 8th (which may be the last date this year). A suggestion was put forward that maybe a visit to the Botanical Gardens in Gibraltar might be arranged. This was greeted by enthusiasm so will be looked into by Sandy. For our next meeting on June 11th a couple of our Garden Club members have very kindly invited other Gardening Club members to view their very attractive garden full of interesting trees, shrubs, plants, cacti etc which we shall all look forward to. Tip of the month: Planting marigolds with tomatoes will stop the tomatoes getting greenfly. Submitted by Sandy Avis Changes to UK Passport Applications From Spain As from 13th May 2013 the process by which UK passport holders living in Spain apply for a new, renewal or replacement passport has changed. Until the change all applications were sent to the British Embassy at Madrid. The application is now to be sent to the IPS in Belfast who process the application, take the fee from the applicants credit card and then send the new passport back to the applicant. Nick at Estepona Port Business and Internet Centre (EPortBic) has already spoken to the handling centre in Belfast to ensure that applications submitted through the Business Centre are processed smoothly and that new passports are returned to the Business Centre for return to the applicant if so requested. For the applicant who applies for a passport through EPortBic little has changed. The new forms are available with the passport return permission, the passport photographs taken conform to the new specifications. and the application form will still be checked in the normal manner prior to it being sent to Belfast. The new passport will be returned to the business centre or to the applicants home. Although the passport fees have been increased by the government the good news is that the fee for sending the application through EPortBic remains the same. Submitted by Nick Nutter, Estepona Port Business Centre. (See their advert on page 35 of magazine). 13

The date for the 2013 Autumn Ice Club Golf Competition has been fixed for the 15 th October. As these Events, and the Presentation Lunches, have now become great Social Events please put the date firmly in your diaries. The Autumn Cup will be held, for the first time, at the spectacular Valle Ramono (Estepona) Golf Club and Resort. I have negotiated, what I believe to be, a fantastic price of 50€ each including a shared buggy, use of all the facilities including the practice range and putting area, for those that can get up early enough. If you don’t know the Club take a look sometime. As it is a long course I have arranged to play off of forward tee positions which will make for an even more enjoyable experience. The entry sheet for the event is posted on the notice board at the club. I will need your name, telephone number, handicap and a tick in the box if it is your first Ice Club Competition. (No! Not you Les.) Now, I realise that details and circumstances may change, particularly my handicap, but a declaration of your intent is what I want. The only bad news, as far as I can see, is that the entry fee will be increased from 2€ to 3€ each. (Start saving) The cost and the number of prizes will be increasing as well though! Looking forward to it already. Alan Davis Any queries contact me on: 952 897 670. Mobile: 699 712 804. e-mail: alanandsue_hq@yahoo.co.uk 14

EasyJet cabin bag limit changes 2nd July EasyJet has introduced new cabin bag rules that will guarantee passengers with hand luggage no bigger than 50 x 40 x 20cm can keep their bag with them in the cabin. The current maximum size permitted, 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, will remain unchanged, but passengers with a bag this size may find that they have to put bag in the hold if the flight is busy. When policy comes into force, passengers who want to ensure their hand luggage is permitted in overhead lockers, or under the seat, will need cabin bag that meets dimensions. Easyjet’s new rules have been prompted by overhead locker space becoming increasingly limited. Consumers may find it difficult to find luggage that meets the reduced allowance. Of the 21 cabin suitcases that Which has tested, only three would meet the reduced restrictions, guaranteeing that the case can be taken in the aircraft cabin. 24

Match Making – “A Moroccan Moment” The other day, I heard a lovely Moroccan story about a young husband who was suddenly woken up, at dawn, feeling the left side of the bedding mat getting colder and colder He moved his right hand a bit further to feel her presence, but she wasn’t there. He took a couple of minutes to wonder about where she could be at this hour. She could have gone to water the goat or even see to the camel. However, when his glance saw the marquee was empty, he remembered what had happened the night before. She too woke up at dawn, with both her eyes swollen, with a wet pillow and dried tears on her cheeks, and with a headache that was result of last night’s fight. Still, she managed to smile, relieved and happy because, for her, their fight meant that he cared. And the rays of the early morning sun, shining through the awning of the tent, symbolized a new and fresh beginning for her life with him. When they married, she had agreed to become a true housewife while he would be striving and toiling daylong, to bring back to the household as much wealth as he could. By staying at home, she could take care of him and of their future children. At least, that’s what they had promised each other before they wed. He would work away and, on his return, she promised to be ready to please and satisfy him in any possible way. And of course, he’ll do the same to her since that’s what healthy relationships are all about, aren’t they - give and take! Unfortunately, as of late, she seemed to be the only one giving and not receiving anything in return. He took everything for granted without attempting to recharge the battery of her heart with any kind love in return. He had even stopped commenting on her looks, her delicious meals, and her tender touches; in deed on everything that he used to admire. The way she saw it, was that he didn’t love her anymore. As far as he was concerned, he had never stopped loving her, it was just that - due to all the pressure of tribal elders, and the need to earn more - he just stopped showing it. Also, the fact that she was always there for him, never leaving his side, made him take her for granted without realizing it. His lack of appreciation of her was eating her up, and had caused the anger in her to boil over that night. She put her suffering in plain words. She shouted at him, swore at him, and screamed the words “Love me or leave me, but don’t you dare ignore me!” It wasn’t until he saw the clothes gathered together in a pile on the carpet flooring of the toldo, did he realized she was indeed leaving him. When she came to collect her belongings, he got down on his knees, begged, cried, and explained the reason behind his cold behaviour towards her. He promised to treat her in the way she deserved to be treated. He offered to please and satisfy her in any and every way possible. Upon seeing his eyes full of tears and hearing the tone of his voice that seemed so sincere, she knew that he would treat her differently from now on. However, she wasn’t about to let his previous behavior go unnoticed. She picked up her chattels and left, heading towards her old abode in her parents’ tent. As for him; well he knew her absence would kill him, but he also knew that he had to endure it, since he had caused it all himself. He vowed to Allah never to make the same mistakes again. And that very morning, he started planning how he would passionately love and treat her every minute of every day, for the rest of their lives. That evening, they sat crossed legged together to enjoy the exquisite Moroccan food she had so lovingly prepared, and to sip the delicious Moroccan wine he had brought home to share with her after, his days labours under the desert sun. “What wine would they be drinking?” You will be asking, as I know that many members like Moroccan food and would like to know which wines pair with cuscus etc. The cuisine of North Africa is varied, yet quite similar to Mediterranean food. This being the case, there is very little difficulty in the match making. Almost any wine will be appropriate, so long as it matches the ingredients. Morocco is famous for its slow cooking “tagine” but even when fish or meat has been included, they have secondary importance to the reduced stock of vegetables and spices. >>27 26

<<26 For this, I suggest a crisp white wine with lots of flavour to accompany it. Try a bottle of the floral scented Voignier from Toledo or a bottle of Albariño from Raiz Baixes. North Africa used to produce 30% of all wine drunk in Europe, and the grape variety they grew (for blending in the wines of Bordeaux) was the Carignan, The production has decreased dramatically these last few years, but the Cariñena/Mazuelo grape (as it is known in Spain) is still grown, high up in the Moroccan mountains, in the vineyards of Menkés-Fés and Berkane. Try a bottle of dry red from the French actor Gérard Depardieu’s bodega, “Deux Domaines. The Carignan grape variety got its name from the Spanish Navarro region of Cariñena, but production there is now very limited. In Cariñena, Tempraillo has taken over from Carignan and blended with Garnache and Suavignon (Bordeaux style) to produce excellent wine. A €3 bottle of Cariñena reserve is a really good buy. European wine made from the Carignan grape is found mainly along the banks of the Midi canal, in the French regions of Corbieres and Languedoc. These spicy, full bodied and fruity red wines are excellent for Moroccan culinary delights. The Spanish region I am recommending to you for matching purposes this month is Priorat. Not just because it pairs well with Moroccan dishes, but also because it is one of the only two regions in Spain to qualify as a DOCa – the highest level of qualification for a wine. In this region, The Cariñena grape is blended with the varieties Garnacha and Syrah to produce some excellent red wines, Try matching your Moroccan food with a reasonably priced red from the renowned bodegas of René Barbier. Bon appétit Brian Buckley Creaser P.S. A leg of Moroccan lamb is famous for its taste and quality. The Moors in Spain used to marinate their lamb in white wine and even today, many Andalucía housewives inject white wine, or brandy, into the leg, using syringe, prior to it being basted with honey and roasted. Lamb Tagine with Couscous - Serves 4 350g/12oz lean boneless lamb, cubed 1 tbsp oil 1 large onion, chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 600ml/1 pint stock 1 cinnamon stick small piece root ginger, finely chopped 5ml/1tsp honey grated rind and juice of 1 orange 1/2 tsp harissa (optional) 1 tsp Ras El Hanout (optional) 2 tsp cumin 1 aubergine, sliced and quartered 4 tomatoes, peeled and chopped 115g/4oz dried apricots, halved 2 tbsp. fresh coriander, chopped salt and freshly ground pepper 1. Heat the oil, fry the onion, then the garlic, then the lamb, until all is nicely browned. 2. Stir in the stock, cinnamon stick, fresh ginger, honey, orange rind and juice. Bring to the boil and simmer gently for about 45 minutes. 3. Add the aubergine, tomatoes and apricots. Cover and cook for another 45 minutes until the lamb is tender. For the Couscous: 225g/8oz couscous pinch of saffron soaked in 1 tbsp. of hot water (if not available a good pinch of turmeric will do) a good knob of butter ( 25g/ 1tbsp) Have the couscous in a bowl, pour over hot, lightly salted water to just cover and add the soaked saffron (or turmeric). Soak for 5 minutes. Place the butter in a pan to melt, then add to the couscous and stir with 1 or 2 forks to keep the grain nicely separated. >>28 27

A Poem for the ...um Elderly Another year has passed And we're all a little older

Now we suffer body aches And sleep the night away

Last summer felt much hotter And winters seem much colder

We used to go out dining And couldn't get our fill

I rack my brain for happy thoughts To put down on my pad

Now we ask for doggie bags, Come home and take a pill

But lots of things that come to mind Just make kind of sad

We used to travel often To places near and far

There was a time not long ago When life was quite a blast

Now we get backaches From riding in the car

Now I fully understand About living in the past

POETRY CORNER

We used to go out shopping For new clothes at the La Canada

We used to go to friend's homes Football matches and lunches

But now we never bother All the sizes are too small

Now we go to therapy, to hospitals And after - funeral brunches

That, my friends, is how life is, And now my tale is told

We used to have hangovers from parties that were gay

So, enjoy each day and live it up, Before you're too damn old!!

<<27 Vegetables: In local lore, the number 7 has mystic qualities, so choose 7 types of vegetables from the following listed: Carrots, courgettes, chick-peas, broad beans, fennel bulb, artichoke, turnip, beans. As well needed are 1 onion and 2 tomatoes. 1/2 tsp. cumin, 1 tsp ground coriander, vegetable stock, 1/2 tsp Harissa (optional), 2 tbsp. oil. Fry onions in oil, add skinned, chopped tomatoes and spices. Add vegetables and stir for a few minutes. Add stock a little at the time and keep stirring until Vegetables are cooked and coated in the creamy stock. (ie. Vegetables should not be swimming in the liquid) A nice alternative instead of Vegetables is a Date, Orange and Carrot salad: A little gem lettuce for the base 2 carrots, finely grated 2 oranges, peel and segment 115g/4oz dates, stoned and cut lengthways 1 oz toasted chopped almonds, last on top. 2 tbsp. lemon juice, 2 tbsp. orange juice, 2 tbsp. olive oil, good pinch of sugar and salt.

My dad worked on the roadwork’s for twenty years before he got fired for stealing! At first I didn't believe it.... but when I got home all the signs were there. 28

JUST FOR A SMILE Church Ladies with Typewriters - They're back! Those wonderful church bulletins! These sentences (with all the BLOOPERS) actually appeared in church bulletins or were announced in church services: The Fasting and Prayer Conference includes meals. Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands. Don't let worry kill you off - let the Church help. Miss Charlene Mason sang 'I will not pass this way again', giving obvious pleasure to the congregation. Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days. At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be 'What Is Hell?' Come early and listen to our choir practice. The ladies of the church have cast off clothing, they may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon An old man lay sprawled across three entire seats in the movie theatre. When the usher came by and noticed this, he whispered to the old man, "Sorry sir, but you're only allowed one seat." The old man just groaned but didn't budge. The usher became more impatient. "Sir, if you don't get up from there I'm going to have to call the manager." Once again, the old man just groaned. The usher marched briskly back up the aisle, and in a moment he returned with the manager. Together the two of them tried repeatedly to move the old dishevelled man, but with no success. Finally they summoned the police. The officer surveyed the situation briefly then asked, "All right buddy what's your name?" "Fred," the old man moaned. "Where ya from, Fred?" asked the police officer. With terrible pain in his voice, and without moving a muscle, Fred replied, The balcony." This months jokes submitted by Gordon Beatson
