Baby Group, Vashon Youth & Family Services

New moms and dads watch the babies explore the learning environment while parents discuss everything from teething to biting. Parents make friends and learn from each other, the parent educator and guest lecturers on subjects such as baby massage, signing, CPR and first aid, early literacy, language development, nutrition and brain development. Check it out for free then join using the sliding fee scale. The group meets weekly; parents can join anytime (before or after baby arrives). The Vashon Island School District sponsors Child Find, a free health screening program for Vashon children ages birth to 21 years old. Children are screened in the areas of vision, hearing,

Vashon Health & Wellness Guide 2010 motor coordination, communication, social/emotional and concept development. This screening helps the school district and parents to identify children who may have special learning needs and match them with programs that will help them to thrive. Many families just need a “tune up,” a fresh perspective and creative ideas to deal with common family issues that can get families stuck. Zick guides parents to find the roots of family struggles and to create an achievable action plan, getting family’s connected again. Zick draws from her years of teaching research-based parent education classes, her training in somatics (the body’s reaction to stressors) and her own experience mothering her 15-year-old son and her 5 year old.

John Gottman and Julie Schwartz Gottman and based upon 13 years of research, is for couples experiencing the transition to parenthood. It is designed to help couples navigate the changes that occur when their new baby arrives by helping them to strengthen their relationship and by giving them skills for understanding and integrating the baby into their family.
