ACTION!

Christmas officially begins in Sunderland on Thursday November 23, when the festive switch-on heralds the arrival of the best time of year.

And what a night it’s going to be, with celebrities, pyrotechnics, street food and an incredible, original, live performance piece. If you want to be at the centre of all the events, then make your way to Keel Square, Sunderland City Centre which is at the heart of all the evening’s excitement.

Christmas is always a special time in Sunderland but this year in particular, it’s going to be something that you won’t want to miss. And the fun isn’t just taking place over one night, as there’s a full programme of events planned throughout the festive season for all the family – just flick through the rest of the magazine and you’ll see what we mean!

This year’s big event is being held in conjunction with the NSPCC, with kick off time at 4.30pm, when there’ll be a range of community entertainment.

The Mama Do singer has had a string of hits, along with being a judge in television show, The Voice and appearing in West End musicals.

The children’s charity is teaming up with towns and cities across the UK for its Light Up Christmas for Children campaign, where giving donations and buying merchandise will help young people.

Pixie will appear live on stage at Keel Square to really give the celebrations star quality.

Jackie Dawson, community fund raising manager for the NSPCC in the North East said she was “absolutely delighted that Sunderland is joining our fight for every childhood.” “Christmas should be a magical time for children, but for some it can be a dark and lonely time,” she said. “With everyone’s help, we can continue to be there for the children that need us most.” The festive season will officially get underway with the switching on of the Christmas tree and city lights at 6pm, when Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Doris MacKnight, officially presses the button.

Youngsters will also not want to miss the Sky Cinema Bus, which will be around all day, showing some favourite Disney shorts. There’ll also be a number of costumed characters and the opportunity for young people to get a festive face painting. And because everyone knows enjoying yourself is hungry work, there’s a whole host of street food operators bringing a wide variety of world cuisine to the city centre. Enjoy the authentic taste of pizzas cooked in a wood oven from Truly, Madly Pizza, some seafood specials from Little Fishy or mouthwatering crepes from Flip and Fast. The Peacock will also be setting up shop, with a range of festive treats. Add some firm favourites like burgers into the mix and you’re on your way to food heaven. And if that wasn’t enough, the evening also coincides with the official opening of Sunderland arts hub, The Fire Station. To mark the occasion an ambitious, original, live performance piece has been commissioned which you won’t want to miss. Turn to page 3 for full details.

And she won’t be alone – because this year she is being joined by top pop star, Pixie Lott.

The evening is set to end with a bang – literally – with a pyrotechnics display at the front of The Fire Station at 6.45pm.

Christmas is looming on the horizon – so let’s talk turkey. Once you’ve been to a number of parties it’s fair to say that you may have had enough of the big bird to ensure that, come Christmas Day, the novelty of a festive dinner is long gone. Never fear, as the restaurants around Sunniside can still fill you full of seasonal spirit - but with menus that’ll wow without taking the shine off your festive feast.

COMMUNITY This Christmas, Sunderland BID are bringing something special to Park Lane.

From 25 November and running every Thursday evening and weekend until Christmas Eve, there will be a unique programme of events to showcase the talent of Sunderland’s diverse communities and to spread the spirit of Christmas. Ranging from headline performances from Marty Longstaff (aka. The Lake Poets), This Little Bird and Sunderland’s youngest rock star Tom “Mouse” Smith to Bollywood dancers, ukulele bands and school choirs, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Or, if you’re keen to get involved yourself, there will be family activities from Moo Music and the Family Arts Network, upcycling and crafting workshops and henna hand painting to give you a break from the Christmas shopping!

The final weekend will be a riot of Christmas activities, with Christmas storytelling and goodie bags for children, Westoe Brass Band playing carols and some Christmas pop classics to get everyone in the mood for the big day. All performances and activities take place in a converted shipping container on Park Lane and are supported by Gentoo and Nexus (look out for the Christmas tree on top!). There will be activities programmed from 5-8pm every Thursday and 11am-5pm on a weekend.

We smell festive family fun! Sunderland Business Improvement District are working in collaboration with the Sunderland Empire this Christmas and inviting families to take part in a special Jack and the Beanstalk themed trail around Sunderland city centre – to help hero Jack search for his missing cows. Using the opposite map, follow the trail through key areas of Sunderland city centre, discovering new businesses and special offers as you search for the hidden cows. Each cow will be attached with a clue or special letter that will help lead you to spell out a mystery word. Once the trail has been completed and the puzzle solved - take your map to Sunderland’s real, open air ice rink on Keel Square and a treat may be waiting for you! The trail runs from 4 December up until 7 January. For full T&Cs visit www.sunderlandbid.co.uk

This Christmas the Sunderland Empire brings a pantomime that’s guaranteed to scale great heights and offer you a gigantic helping of magic – Jack and the Beanstalk! West End, award-winning actor Bill Ward (Emmerdale, Coronation Street) takes on the villainous role of the giant’s henchman, Fleshcreep. Joining him is TV legend Janine Duvitski (ITV’s Benidorm, One Foot in the Grave, CBeebie’s Old Jack’s Boat) as the delightful Vegetable Fairy, plus children’s TV favourite Jade Natalie (Nick Jr’s GO GO GO!) as Princess Jill. With stunning costumes and sets, hilarious song and dance routines, plus more jokes than a bag full of magic beans, let’s hope our hero Jack lives happily ever after with the beautiful princess – or will a beastly giant stop him in his tracks? With a host of crazy characters, this is one madcap adventure your family won’t want to miss! Jack and the Beanstalk is set to be another spectacular panto that promises to add a fairy tale touch to your festive season and it arrives at the Sunderland Empire from Friday 15 December 2017 – Sunday 7 January 2018.
