SOMA HISTORY The original development of the South of Market area coincided with California’s Gold Rush of the mid to late 1840s, and the concurrent American conquest of the area as a consequence of the Mexican-American war. In 1847 Washington Allon Bartlett, the American military mayor of Yerba Buena (as San Francisco was known at the time) commissioned surveyor Jasper O’Farrell to create a new southerly subdivision of the village. O’Farrell was behind several innovations that would indelibly impact the geography of San Francisco. He was responsible for making Market Road (today’s Ship repair at 2nd and King Streets, 1862. Market Street) the grand boulevard that it became, as well as for orienting the streets of the new neighborhood at 45 degree angles from their counterparts north of Market Street and doubling the length of city blocks compared to those above Market. As it developed, SoMa became home to a growing community of pioneers looking to take advantage of the spoils of the Gold Rush and the subsequent early industrialization of San Francisco. While a few micro-neighborhoods drew upper and middle class residents in the later 19th century, most of those families moved north of Market as SoMa became increasingly the home of working class families, many of whom were immigrants from Europe seeking a better life in America. It was considered “the wrong side of the tracks,” literally, and earned the nickname “South of the Slot” after the “slot” in Market Street through which the cable cars which ran there would grab onto the propulsion cable just under street level. SoMa was almost completely destroyed in the infamous earthquake and fire of 1906, and the rebuilding plan included wider streets to accommodate an increase in industrial land use. With more industry came more working class residents, and businesses catering to their needs. Another major transition in SoMa came in the 1930s when the construction of the new Bay Bridge and adjoining highway 101 destroyed block after block of the neighborhood. The second half of the 20th century saw the birth of a vibrant gay community in SoMa, centered on Folsom Street in the western section of the neighborhood. Bars, nightclubs and sex clubs drew thousands of nighttime revelers to what once was a sleepy industrial zone. Decades of planning for the redevelopment of central SoMa led to a complete transformation of the area now centered around Yerba Buena Gardens. The first of three vast halls of the Moscone Center convention center opened in 1981. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art established a beachhead nearby in 1995, leading a slew of new or relocated museums to make SoMa their home in the following two decades. The '90s also brought the first dot-com boom and bust, with SoMa at the epicenter of the wave of rising rents and demand for space of all kinds followed by the woosh of capital and tenants leaving the neighborhood as tech’s market value plummeted and financing dried up. The current whirlwind tech market has yet again transformed SoMa, which is home to the world headquarters of the likes of Twitter, Uber, Square, Salesforce, Airbnb, Pinterest, LinkedIn and hundreds of other tech giants, start-ups, and everything in between. Also decades in the planning, the 2010 ground-breaking of the massive new Transbay Transit Center redevelopment is yet again changing the urban landscape of SoMa. The first phase, which is scheduled for completion in 2017, will bring a new one million square foot Transit Center to SoMa, and when finally completed it will include an underground rail spur bringing Caltrain downtown and several adjacent skyscrapers breaking height records for the West Coast.

SOMA NEIGHBORHOODS The South of Market area is vast and diverse, comprised of smaller neighborhoods and micro-hoods stretching from San Francisco Bay to the tail end of the 101 Freeway, and from Market Street south to Mission Bay. Yerba Buena Gardens: Come here for a major cultural fix. This area is centered on the blocks surrounding beautiful Yerba Buena Gardens [ yerbabuenagardens.com ] which is located between Mission, Howard, Third and Fourth Streets. The Gardens themselves provide a green oasis in the midst of a thrumming urban landscape. Don’t miss the inspiring fountain monument dedicated to The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the lower level of the gardens. This square block is also home to the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts [ ybca.org ] a cultural center offering art and film exhibitions, dance, music and live theatre performances; the North Hall of Moscone Center; and the Metreon contemporary mall featuring dining, shopping, and a 16-screen cinema. Just across Third Street you’ll find the acclaimed San Francisco Museum of Modern Art [ sfmoma.org ], which reopens in 2016 after a monumental expansion project that doubles the space of the museum. In just a block or two from here you can spend days upon end exploring these other cultural institutions: • • • • • •

Contemporary Jewish Museum [ thecjm.org ] at 736 Mission Street Museum of the African Diaspora [ moadsf.org ] at 685 Mission Street California Historical Society [ californiahistoricalsociety.org ] at 678 Mission Street Cartoon Art Museum [ cartoonart.org ] at 655 Mission Street Children’s Creativity Museum [ creativity.org ] at 221 Fourth Street Society of California Pioneers [ californiapioneers.org ] at 300 Fourth Street

Perhaps you are in San Francisco attending a conference, convention or event at Moscone Center [ moscone.com ]? if so, you’re right in the heart of this effervescent cultural neighborhood. Nearby are some of the City’s largest hotels, the huge Westfield Mall, the Yerba Buena Ice Skating & Bowling Center, and much more. Between conference and dinner drop by Jamber Wine Pub just down Folsom Street for great California wines and craft beers, all on tap.

Western SoMa: For a taste of the authentic old-school SoMa vibe, head west to the industrial, gritty, nightlife-rich neighborhood centered at Folsom and 11th Streets and heading out several blocks in all directions. This is the historically gay leather/fetish center of San Francisco, home of the infamous Folsom and Up Your Alley Street Fairs [ folsomstreetevents.org ]. Today the area still has a large number of gay clubs and bars, like the SF Eagle at 12th and Harrison, but it's also a thriving home to nighttime entertainment of all stripes. You’ll cross paths with urban hipsters working at nearby Twitter, Uber and other tech giants, young families living in the growing number of new apartment and condo complexes, long-time residents who have literally seen it all in SoMa, some folks who've seen better times, and everything in between. This is a great place to pack a picnic lunch or fill your Airbnb pad's fridge at long-time food purveyors Ted's Market on Howard and Rainbow Coop Grocery on Folsom. South Beach: Once a run-down section of crumbling warehouses, the redevelopment of South Beach has created a pristine waterfront neighborhood of upper end condos and apartment buildings, swank businesses, awesome public park spaces along the Embarcadero and waterways, and of course AT&T Park, home of the MLB World Champions the San Francisco Giants. West of the waterfront, South Beach is an eclectic mélange of warehouses – many converted to high-tech and R&D spaces – retail, loft-style live-work spaces, bars and restaurants. Hungry? Check out Merigan Sub Shop on 2nd Street for an authentic deli experience, or Brickhouse Cafe on Brannan for heartier fare in a great atmosphere, among many other great dining spots near the ballpark. And don't miss a visit to Bluxome Street Winery, where they follow in the footsteps of the earliest of Northern California's winemakers with a great tasting room, nibbles, and more. South Park: A little patch of land in South Beach. Over a century ago this charming few blocks was a home to SoMa’s upper middle class and the site of the first paved streets in San Francisco. Today the park itself is a great spot to find some grass and shade in the midst of the City, and there are terrific restaurants and shops dotting the perimeter. Check out The Butler and The Chef for an authentic French bistro experience right in South Park. Or just to the west, Picnic on Third serves up an ever-changing menu of chef-inspired entrees. Or stroll east to Second Street and succumb to grilled sandwich fare that is definitely not the stuff of your childhood at the American Grilled Cheese Kitchen, or cross the street for home-brewed beer and tasty pub fare at The 21st Amendment Brewery & Restaurant. Mission Bay: Once home to a vast railroad yard, shipyards and dilapidated industrial buildings this area along the Bay south of AT&T Park has become a haven for biotechnology and R&D pioneers in less than two decades. It is home to a campus of the world-renowned UCSF Medical School, including new hospitals opened in 2015 serving women, children and cancer patients, as well as condos and apartment buildings. Anticipating a move to San Francisco before the end of the decade, the World Champion Golden State Warriors NBA team acquired a large parcel of land here. Mission Bay features a great selection of parks and green spaces dotted throughout the neighborhood. So go fly a kite in one of these Bay-front parks, or lift some weights at UCSF’s Fitness Center, then head down to The Ramp, a San Francisco institution for decades, for cold beer and oysters on the waterfront at sunset.

Take pride in your neighborhood. Join the team. Keep SF clean.

GETTING AROUND SOMA South of Market is richly served by scores of bus, street car and train options for transit into and within the area, as well as taxis, ride-share options, bicycle rentals, pedi-cabs and more. For public transportation options these websites are invaluable: • 511.org - a comprehensive resource for transit options throughout the Bay Area • sfmta.com - San Francisco's municipal transit agency, operating buses, trolleys, light rail, cable cars and more throughout the City • bart.gov - Bay Area Rapid Transit system's main website • caltrain.com - Caltrain serving the Peninsula and Silicon Valley • actransit.org - AC Transit serving the East Bay • goldengate.org - Public bus and ferry services to points north of the Golden Gate Not to mention... there's got to be an App for that! And it was very likely created here in SoMa! So check your favorite platform's app store and download away! Finally, compared to the rest of San Francisco SoMa is relatively flat (unless you plan to traverse Rincon Hill). So don your walking shoes and set out on foot and explore this amazing neighborhood and experience San Francisco past and present, not to mention sharing the sidewalk with those who are creating our future in SoMa's innumerable tech firms.

A neighborhood as large as SoMA needs a broad spectrum of leadership working together in the interests of the community. The inaugural edition of SOMA GUIDE is an example of such collaboration amongst two local business advocates:
