PRESIDENT’S WELCOME On behalf of the entire Pride Team, we welcome you to Sonoma County Pride’s Russian River Weekend! With the Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality now over a year old, we have made tremendous progress in our quest for equality. Change and acceptance does not come easily. This past year we have seen attempts to set back our victories with discriminatory religious liberty laws and anti-Transgender legislation. Fortunately our Presidential administration has taken the lead of moving equality forward. As an election year, it is imperative that we all vote to keep pro-equality progressives in office. Our theme this year is United in Pride. As a board, we work together united in our efforts to move equality forward, not just locally, but nationally and worldwide. We are very honored to have Neal Gottlieb as one of our grand marshals this year. Neal is a North Bay resident, a co-founder of Three Twins Ice Cream, a recent past Survivor contestant, but most importantly a strong advocate for LGBT rights nationally as well as internationally. On April 16, 2014, after a six-day climb, Neal mounted a gay pride flag at Mount Stanley’s Margherita Peak, Uganda’s highest summit, in protest of Uganda’s criminalization of homosexuality. The legislation signed into law allowed those born homosexual to be imprisoned for life. Fortunately this law has since been overturned.
You have a style all your own.
Two years later, on April 17th of this year, he proudly placed a rainbow-painted outhouse displaying a trans pride flag at the summit of North Carolina’s tallest mountain in protest of the state’s repressive HB2 legislation. Thank you Neal for all you do on behalf of our community and our allies. The pride team has worked hard this year to bring you the best Pride our area has had. We honor the contributions our grand marshals have made to our community. Our parade, vendor and entertainment line-ups will have something for everyone. We also want to thank our sponsors. Without their support, our event and our mission would not be possible. We would particularly like to acknowledge our largest sponsors, Graton Resort and Casino and Barefoot Wine and Bubbly. For the past two years they have been outstanding. We would also like to acknowledge Alaska Airlines. This year they donated four travel certificates to anywhere Alaska flies worldwide, as raffle items. How awesome is that? Please support our sponsors as they support us. As we look forward to tomorrow’s successes, let us stop and take time to be grateful for our accomplishments, for our allies, and for all we have to be so proud of today. It’s time to celebrate! Welcome to Sonoma County Pride and to the beautiful Russian River. Happy Pride!

2016 CELEBRITY GRAND MARSHAL
Neal H. Gottlieb Outspoken LGBT Ally
Neal is an ice cream entrepreneur. He graduated from Cornell University and in 2005, Gottlieb started Three Twins Ice Cream. The first Three Twins scoop shop opened in San Rafael, California, then in 2010 he opened a factory in Petaluma, California to start selling pints to grocery stores and now has a second factory in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. In April 2014 Neal climbed to the top of Uganda’s highest mountain, Margherita Peak, and planted a Gay Pride flag there “in protest of Uganda’s recent criminalization of homosexuality.” Then two years later in April of 2016 Neal proudly placed a rainbow-painted outhouse displaying a trans pride flag at the summit of North Carolina’s tallest mountain in protest of the state’s repressive HB2 legislation. It was a brilliant sight. The follow letter was nailed to the front of the outhouse and calls out the governor for the crap that has become known as the “bathroom bill.” Governor McCrory, As of this morning, an outhouse proudly displaying a trans pride flag is sitting atop Mount Mitchell, North Carolina’s tallest mountain. It was placed there in protest of HB2, your state’s institutionalization of discrimination (also known as hate) against members of the trans community (also known as humans). Yes, at least for a little while, North Carolina’s highest point is an outhouse; a fitting symbol for a state that has sullied itself with shitty, repressive legislation. You still support HB2, claiming it is for the people’s safety, but we all know this is just a load of crap. Government-back discrimination has no place in just societies. Soon enough HB2 will be reversed and your legacy will be skid marks in North Carolina’s history.
In 2016, Gottlieb appeared as a contestant on Survivor: Kaôh Rōng, the 32nd season of the competitive reality television series Survivor as part of the Brains Tribe. Filming occurred during spring of 2015. He placed 11th after he was medically evacuated due to an infection in his knee.
We’d like to be your domestic partner. International, too.
2016 GRAND MARSHALS Chris Brokate
Hometown Hero and Community Grand Marshal Chris moved to the Russian in 2009 after living all along the redwood belt from Big Sur to the Smith River since the 90’s. He volunteered for the Russian River Keepers for five years before becoming the founder and executive director of CRA (Clean River Alliance) in late 2014. Chris was tired of seeing the devastating effects of the trash coming down the Russian River and entering the ocean after heavy rains. He has spent most of his life volunteering for different groups but one of the most satisfying things he has ever done has been removing trash from the lower Russian River and preventing it from entering the estuary and ocean, providing a cleaner environment for wildlife, fish and the community as a whole. Chris, his dog Cosmo and the garbage patch kids have cleaned 150,000 pounds of trash out of Russian River watershed and from our streams and rivers in addition to cleaning up homeless encampments by the dozens all in the name of environmental stewardship. Thank you for what you have done for our community!
Sister Sparkle Plenty
Russian River Icon Grand Marshal Founding Member, Russian River Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence Mistress of Saints I am Sister Sparkle Plenty, the nun too bright. “I know it’s too much, but is it enough?” Born in year of the dragon, then years later in 2001 Sparkle heard that there was an Order of Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence forming in Guerneville. They looked fabulous and had a reputation for being “outrageous”. I realized that I desperately wanted to be a part of this group, because I was at a point in my life where I wanted to do something that would help me overcome my insecurities and get myself “out there”. As a gay man I had seen a lot of suffering within my “people” and wanted to do something to make a difference. RR Sisters began by building bridges with the seniors, local schools, sheriffs and firefighters’ associations and advocacy groups to directly benefit our community. Many other Orders of Sisters have expressed admiration for the way we have become involved with our entire community, rather than just the LGBT folks. Becoming a Sister was the best thing that I ever did for myself, but it was also the hardest. Ultimately it has been the most rewarding thing I have ever done. My Sisters and I are truly loved by our community, and together we have indeed helped make it a better place to live.

2016 FESTIVAL ENTERTAINERS
DJ C- L E K T R A will be spinning deep, sexy, hot and heavy house, electroclash and electrohouse. DJ C-Lektra’s beats keep dance floors bumpin’ from Miami to Vancouver and back again. With over ten years of experience in live DJ performances all over the world, DJ C-Lektra’s track selection boasts influence from her roots growing up amongst the vibrant, globally-inclined music scene in Miami, Florida. THE FRONT is a trio of fierce female musicians from West Sonoma County playing melodramatic acoustic rock. All women are singer-songwriters and have combined forces to create a unique sound. Teresa Raef (primary songwriter, guitarist and vocalist), Tami Gosnell (drums and vocals) and Stephanie Salva (bass, vocals and goldplated kazoo). Being that they are three frontwomen, the band is aptly named. Hope-folk. Soul-pop. Poetic rock. BOBBY JO VALENTINE’s music exists outside the lines of any genre, but the music’s lyrics and catchy melodies reach listeners on all paths of life. The authentic, universal, uncanny nature of his songs have won him Songwriter of the Year at West Coast Songwriter’s Association twice – in 2011 and 2015. He’s sold 16,000 albums and performed more than 500 concerts—all without a record label. He has a devoted fan base which grows after every concert.
