WELCOME The GLBT History Museum, located in the heart of the neighborhood at 4127 18th Street, is the first full-scale, stand-alone museum of its kind in the United States. The compelling main gallery exhibits cover a diverse range of queer history — from people you may know about (Harvey Milk) to stories you’ve never heard before. Two additional galleries feature regularly changing exhibitions on LGBTQ history and culture — and the museum shop offers unique queer history themed gifts.
The organization provides tours for groups of 10 or more — with a particular focus on student groups—and sponsors programs such as author readings, film screenings and panel discussions. The museum is a project of the GLBT Historical Society. Known as San Francisco's "queer Smithsonian,” the society also maintains one of the world’s largest archives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender historical materials. [ glbthistory.org ]
