ative Americans inhabited the Outer Banks and lived off the land and sea for centuries before the first Europeans explored the area. The Roanoke Colony was a 16th century effort by the English to settle the region, financed and organized by Sir Walter Raleigh. There were several voyages between the colony and England, and the opportunity to explore the New World. Among the explorers was Thomas Harriot, who later chronicled his findings – including observations of the foods and foodways of the Native Americans, in his 1590 A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia; the region at the time was called Virginia. Not surprisingly, seafood was a major part of the diet. He writes, “After they have taken store of the fish, they get them unto a place fit to dress it. There they stack up in the ground four stakes in a square room and lay four posts upon them and others over that … they make a fire underneath to broil …” and “Their women know how to make earthen vessels with special cunning … [they] fill the vessel with water and then put in fruit, flesh and fish and let all boil together … they put it out into dishes and set before the company and then they make good cheer together.” Indeed, broiling fish and seafood boils are today time-honored ways to enjoy the fresh seafood of the Outer Banks, and such dishes can be found at many of the region’s top restaurants. The unique foodways of the Outer Banks is a confluence of coastal cuisine and traditional Southern offerings. It’s not unusual to find restaurants with fresh catch on their menu next to eateries serving up barbecue.


On the Outer Banks, there are menus peppered with ingredients and dishes that epitomize the eats of the area. In every season, there is something fresh and local to celebrate on plates and palates. The rich farmlands of Northeast North Carolina provide many of the seasonal vegetables and fruits, while the ocean, sounds, and tributaries surrounding the Banks offers a number of seafood items. In warmer months, generally blue crabs (with the delicacy, soft shell crabs, available in mid-spring), Spanish mackerel, mahi-mahi, mullet, shrimp, and tilefish can be found. Cooler weather typically offers bluefish, croaker, flounder, kingfish, king mackerel, oysters, sea bass, grey sea trout, spotted sea trout, spot, and striped bass. Yearround seafood includes clams, grouper, snapper, triggerfish, and tuna.



Seafood is the signature comestible on the Outer Banks, and to ensure folks are getting the freshest catch from local watermen, the Outer Banks Catch program was established in June 2010. Membership includes fishermen (many of whom are multi-generational watermen), seafood markets and grocers, community members, and restaurants. The group works in tandem to get Outer Banks-caught finfish and shellfish from the sea to serving platters. Many restaurants in the region serve approved Outer Banks Catch seafood; a platter with the initiative’s name and stylized fish logo can be found near the eatery’s entrance to identify themselves as a member. Knowledgeable waitstaff can guide diners through what is in season, and the best preparation methods.

RESTAURANT SCENE The cuisine scene of the Outer Banks is wide and diverse, offering restaurants that just seat a few to one that see a few hundred. They serve up food from high stacks of pancakes, fried country ham and grits swimming in butter for breakfast, to plates featuring the latest culinary trends, often made with local ingredients, for dinner. There are coffeehouses that roast and brew their own beans, and restaurants that brew their own beverage of another sort – beer. Along the Banks, there are seafoodcentric restaurants that include oyster bars to fine dining eateries. Some are relatively new on the scene, while others have been feeding families of visitors for generations. Some seafood is done Old School style, crispy fried, while others are crafted with such techniques as sous-vide. Other restaurants cater to the surfing community, with Bajainspired dishes of fresh catch and high quality beef and pork tucked in tortillas with seasonal vegetables and housemade salsa adorning the dishes. Here, look for tropical drinks and buckets of cold beer to temper the spicy heat. Still others feature Southern cuisine, like barbecue, fried chicken, roasts, and homestyle vegetables. Some you pull up a chair at a wooden bar, and others you sit down at a crisp white linen topped table. Look for restaurants with stunning views of the water; there are numerous offerings that allow diners to gaze out from the dining room, or in some cases, a patio. Feel like relaxing with family and friends at your cottage? Order up an assortment of dishes from a variety of restaurants, like steamed seafood, barbecue, and the like, and have an effortless patio party with local beer and wine. Not only do you get a great taste of the Outer Banks, but you are left with more time to enjoy your visit to the beach. Many eateries are members of the Outer Banks Restaurant Association (OBRA.)

DINING EVENTS The OBRA showcases a number of its restaurant partners during special dining events throughout the year. In early spring the OBRA features scores of restaurants and their cuisine through special events during the Taste of The Beach, a unique – and delicious – perspective of the area during shoulder season. The weekend-long event offers visitors several days of wine tastings, cooking classes, a chowder cook-off, special menu presentations at area restaurants, brewery tours, tapas crawls, and more. Everything cumulates with the Taste of the Beach Grand Tasting where some two-dozen restaurants and other vendors gather for samples of their food and exhibitions of their hospitality in vying for prizes and recognition. Other unique opportunities to get a flavor of the Outer Banks are through two restaurant weeks, a period where eateries offer specially priced prix-fixe menus as an incentive to come out and try new restaurants and rediscover old favorites. Look for the Spring Restaurant Week and the Fall Restaurant Week. Later in the autumn is the March of Dimes Signature Chef Auction, another event that showcases the talent of local culinary professionals while raising money for the group.

A SAVORY SOUVENIR A visit to the Outer Banks provides an opportunity to explore the many culinary offerings from the wide-and-diverse restaurant scene. Each bite is a savory souvenir of the trip. hen visitors come to the Outer Banks, they’re looking to experience the unmatched beauty of the gorgeous beaches, explore the activities that can’t be found anywhere else and taste the delectable seafood and fresh-grown veggies that are bountifully harvested from the ocean and land. Imported beers and wines can be found anywhere; it’s the local wineries and craft breweries from right here on the Outer Banks that leave visitors and residents longing for a taste and always craving more. The mainland of Currituck County has traditionally been a land of fertile farm fields and abundant harvests. Now in the areas that once produced cotton, soybeans and corn, neat rows of vineyards have appeared. Muscadine is a popular grape for this region that produces a sweet, dessert-style wine. When made correctly, muscadine wine retains a refreshing and often nostalgic taste of the grape itself. However, many vineyards have chosen to plant the classic wine grapes of California and Europe—cabernet sauvignon, sauvignon blanc, syrah and zinfandel. A winery that experiments with a little of both is Sanctuary Vineyards, located on the grounds of The Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg. Sanctuary Vineyards consists of almost 10 acres under cultivation featuring a brand new wine tasting bar, cellar tours and a gift shop. The vineyard now has wines made exclusively from their own grapes that are suitable for every preference. Pair their Wild Pony White or 2010 Viognier Reserve with a delicious meal, or sip on Sweet Serenity or Life’s a Peach, two of their sweeter varieties, at any time of day. If you prefer hops to grapes, you’re in for a treat. Some of the tastiest microbrews to tempt your discernible palate are produced right here on the Outer Banks. Outer Banks Brewing Station has gained popularity not only for their eclectic range of handcrafted beers, 3 time World Beer Cup medal winners, but also for being America’s first wind powered brewery. Their environmentally friendly restaurant celebrates the uniqueness of the Outer Banks and its history which can also be seen in the distinct

variety of beers they produce. A popular selection, Olsch, is known as THE thirst quencher, a refreshing pale, delicate beer with a lively aroma. The Full Moon Brewery, located on the Manteo waterfront, specializes in British and Irish style beers. Another favorite is Charon Stout, a dry Irish stout with molasses, caramel and toasted malt flavors, perfect after a delicious meal at Full Moon Café & Grill. hen you first catch sight of The Jolly Roger, you might be unsure exactly what to think of it. Since its conversion from a gas station/grocery store to a restaurant in 1972, The Jolly Roger has been anything but your ordinary Outer Banks restaurant.

“We’re eclectic, it’s crazy. You’ll not find another Jolly Roger; there’s no rhyme or reason to this place—and that’s what people love about it,” says owner Carol Ann Angelos. It’s been 30 years since Angelos took ownership of Jolly, and over the years she has experienced many changes, including three expansions and a renovation after Hurricane Isabel in 2003. Although the restaurant has gone through several changes over the years, Carol Ann’s style is unaltered. The restaurant decor is an eclectic blend of Christmas, pirate paraphernalia, aquatic murals, handmade boutique-style gifts and old-time movie posters. Almost as diverse as the restaurant itself is the food selection. The Jolly Roger is open yearround for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and they offer something for everyone. Breakfast favorites include the Eggs Benedict, pancakes and home fries—all made in-house from fresh ingredients. For lunch and dinner, the restaurant offers a wide selection of options, from steaks and seafood to pastas and salads. All of the restaurant’s sauces are housemade from scratch, and

But she has always found that The Jolly’s authenticity and originality is what keeps happy guests coming back time and again. “I was almost ready to sand down the booths, give in, do another color, but that wasn’t what I wanted to do,” Angelos says. “People love it the way it is.”

“We just like to make people happy and see them enjoy a good meal. We treat them like they’re coming home. That’s what makes us who we are,” says Angelos.
