COME DISCOVER THE
WHAT TO DO IN 2016 VIRGINIA’S WILD COAST With the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier islands on America’s East Coast, the Virginia Eastern Shore draws kayakers, hikers, boaters, fishermen, birders and nature lovers of all stripes to the area’s stunning wild beauty. Two National Wildlife Refuges, a National Seashore, and state and local parks preserve over 78,000 acres of pristine lands and hundreds of miles of coastline. Hire a professional outfitter – a licensed boat captain or expert kayak ecotour guide — to boat or kayak out to the barrier islands for the day. Walk the wild beaches, play in the surf and hunt for beach treasures. You’re experiencing the New World exactly as the first Europeans to arrive here might have done.
6 You’ll Love Our Nature #visitesva
What’s the ideal way to explore hundreds of miles of pristine coastline along the Virginia Eastern Shore’s two coastlines? From a kayak. Explore both the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean wild shores with experienced outfitters. Short trips, overnights and multiple day excursions are tailored to skill level and interest. Unique trips include the Kayak Winery Tour to Chatham Vineyards, a weekend at a barrier island hunting lodge, a trip to harvest wild clams and oysters and family nature paddles. Stand up paddle boarding is growing in popularity.
Virginia’s oyster industry is the East Coast’s largest and the Eastern Shore’s two coastlines produce three of seven distinct Virginia oyster flavors. Over seventy restaurants include raw bars, seafood shacks, casual cafes and elegant bistros. Boat up to restaurants in four waterside towns: Cape Charles, Wachapreague, Onancock and Chincoteague. Tour an aqua farm cultivating clams and oysters, boat or kayak out to wild oyster “rocks” and harvest your dinner, and visit local cultural centers and museums that tell the story of the waterman life. Buy fresh seafood at local grocers and cook up a feast at your vacation rental, or load up a cooler to take it home.
100 PLACES TO SEE
Grab the Virginia’s Eastern Shore Artisan Trail brochure wherever you see the distinctive sign, above, or download it at www.artisanscenterofvirginia.org.
You’ll have a detailed roadmap to over 100 extraordinary cultural adventures. Head off the main road to studios, farms, wineries, galleries, B&Bs, museums, cultural stops, stages and shops tucked away down country lanes and in small walkable towns.
ON THE WATER
You’ve got to get out on the water where life is really lived here on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Hire an outfitter – kayak, boat, sailboat – and head out, and take in the wildlife, the silence, harvest some wild oysters, crabs or clams, spot the famous Chincoteague ponies, go fishing, see the wild coastlines and venture out to the wild barrier islands or remote Tangier Island.
TOP PICK FOR 2016 TRAVEL
National Geographic Traveler’s list of the world’s top 20 places to visit in 2016 includes Tangier Island, a remote island in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. Reach Tangier by boat or small plane. Settled in the 1600s, its residents have been isolated from the rest of the world for four centuries. You’ll find ancient graves, a tiny museum, charming B&Bs, casual restaurants and one of the East Coast’s best beaches. The Onancock to Tangier ferry operates in the warmer months.
VIRGINIA’S EASTERN SHORE
Settled in the 1600’s, the Virginia Eastern Shore has evolved in relative isolation from modern America. Until 1964, when the 23mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel was built, it was a long ferry ride to mainland Virginia, and an inconvenient car, rail or boat trip to points north. Today, much of the region, untouched by big commercial development, looks like it did when Captain John Smith arrived in 1607.
Interested in building rockets or robots or seeing a working NASA base? Then the Virginia Space Flight Academy is the go-to place for summer camp. For young people, ages 11-16, there are hands-on activities, excitement and fun. Meet new friends, be part of a team, learn what space engineers need to know and enjoy Virginia’s beautiful Eastern Shore.

he Eastern Shore of Virginia is a history buff’s dream, settled in the early 1600s and relatively undisturbed since due to its centuries of isolation. It’s also a culinary mecca, where fresh caught seafood meets southern comfort food, meets avante guard food trends. Plus, you can gaze across open water while you eat. If you’re an avid kayaker, hiker, fisherman, hunter, boater, sailor, birder or just like the adrenaline high of a good hanglide, this is the place. If you love art, there are dozens of studios and galleries up and down the shore. Antique stores, charming shops and upscale markets are filled with treasures you can take home. aily life hums briskly as a summer day dawns on Chincoteague Island. Scooters zip along Maddox Boulevard and bike riders pedal toward Assateague Island. By afternoon, lines form at the ice cream parlors. In late July, thousands flock to the world-famous Pony Swim and Penning, celebrating its 91st year in 2016. Over at Tom’s Cove they’re stacking bushels of blue crabs, bagging clams, culling oysters, all of this one step removed from the tables of town restaurants where you can slurp down “Chincoteague Salt” oysters or bite into a crispy soft shell crab. For generations of families drawn by wild ponies and Atlantic surf, Chincoteague is Virginia’s FUN FACT Eastern Shore. This is the Legend holds the famous gateway to the world-famous Chincoteague ponies swam ashore Assateague Island National from a shipwrecked Spanish Seashore, nationally-renowned galleon, but no one is quite sure. A country drive down Atlantic and Metompkin roads passes through hamlets like Modest Town and Kegotank, small clusters of homes with old churches and historic cemeteries. This winding back road is fast becoming a bicycling favorite. A few miles north near the Maryland border find the little fishing village of Greenbackville, with the Crusty Crab Seafood Shack and the Bay Watch Inn. Nearby Captain’s Cove has a 9-hole golf course, marina and restaurant on Chincoteague Bay. Across Route 13, bayside country roads lead to old landings once buzzing with schooners and steamboats. Today they’re ideal for launching a skiff or kayak for paddling or fishing for flounder or rockfish. In the island village of Saxis you can nod hello to the watermen at work at the wharf and visit Saxis Island Museum, which chronicles their hardworking way of life. In the town of Parksley, a collection of rail cars and engines harkens back half a century to when railroad eclipsed the ships and sent Shore-grown vegetables and fruit nationwide. A day of playing in salty sea spray and crashing waves, exploring small towns and tasty lunch counters, inevitably ends at water’s edge. Gulls and terns cry out and swoop over acres of salt marsh, a scene that is both a beautiful and essential piece of the Shore experience.
Le Petit Bistro at Bloxom Vineyard
In addition to wine tastings, you’ll be delighted by delicious wood-fired pizza too if you make the trip on a Saturday. You’ll meet the family who owns and operates the winery, the Giardinas, who escaped the NYC rat race and have created “the wine life” on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
See a space suit and a large-scale model rocket up close, examine the night skies on Astronomy Night, and help launch a model rocket at the NASA Visitor Center. Weekend programs give young (and older) space enthusiasts unique opportunities to explore all things celestial.
Where else can you walk for miles on a pristine Atlantic beach, climb a lighthouse, look for wild ponies, and shop for original art within a funky beach town? Choose from dozens of places to stay, including Victorian B&Bs, modern vacation condos, family motels and campgrounds. Don’t go home without tasting the homemade ice cream at Island Creamery or Chincoteague oysters.
Off 13: Parksley
Relive the golden age of train travel in this 1885 railroad town. Climb aboard the preserved dining, sleeping and caboose cars at the Eastern Shore Railway Museum. Continue your step back in time with lunch at the Club Car Café and browsing Jaxon’s old-fashioned “five and dime,” where you can still get penny candy.
“The Eastern Shore, and Chincoteague in particular, are the quiet alternative to the other beach resorts like Virginia Beach, Ocean City and OBX. We’ve got everything they’ve got except a boardwalk and we’ve got it in a nicer, quieter way. It’s a lot safer. It’s a good family place. It’s a good place to live and a good place to play. We’re still like everything else used to be. I hear that all the time.”

he Chesapeake Bay BridgeTunnel (CBBT) is an engineering marvel built in the mid-1960s to link mainland Virginia with the Eastern Shore, which, at the time, was a very long ferry ride. The 20-mile CBBT is the world’s largest bridge-tunnel complex. It includes two onemile-long tunnels, three bridges, two miles of causeway and four manmade islands.

s a Chesapeake Bay deadrise slowly motors away from Onancock wharf bound for Tangier Island, a charter fishing boat clears the inlet out of Wachapreague, headed to blue Atlantic waters. Out in the marsh, watermen deftly steer skiffs loaded with oysters and clams along winding creeks back toward the dock. Daily life, like boats and tides, ebbs and flows in the Middle Shore’s vintage towns and countryside escapes. On small town streets a storekeeper hangs the “Open” sign, an artist’s easel is set up for plein air painting, and a breeze picks up enticing smells from the corner café. The county seat of Accomac hums with courthouse activity amid the finest examples of 18th century architecture.

As the landscape between bay and ocean narrows, the choices to stay, eat and play grow rich and varied, from quaint waterfront cottages to modern hotels in Exmore. Renovated inns and art galleries lend a modern charm to Onancock, a walkable wharf town dating to 1680. From here, you can take the ferry to the waterman’s community of Tangier Island or explore the waters of Onancock Creek by kayak. Farther south in Wachapreague, the day’s catch is weighed and cleaned dockside while the proud anglers soak in spacious views from the deck of The Island House Restaurant. On country roads the curious traveler finds quirky surprises: The Seaside Grill in Willis Wharf, Teresa’s Quilts in Exmore, Asian
pears and other seasonal fruit at Mason Beach Fruit Farm near Harborton. Wherever you may wander, evening finds you at a pub, café or fine restaurant that exudes warmth and atmosphere. Dining ranges from southern comfort food to sophisticated culinary adventures using the fruits of farm and sea.
FUN FACT Housed in an original, shiny metal railroad car, the Exmore Diner was retro before retro was in vogue. Friendly, local faces serve up comfort food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Onancock captures the charm of Eastern Shore living. A town steeped in history charts its founding back to 1680. Its centuries-old homes evoke an era of prosperity on the shore, particularly Ker Place, a historic house turned museum. Today, artist studios, restaurants and inns capture the vitality of the current day. Meet artists in their studios and local farmers at the Onancock Market on Saturday mornings. Walk to dinner, a movie, or a live show at the playhouse. Choose from four inns and a historic hotel. Dining ranges from an Irish pub to sophisticated cafés to a dockside eatery where the chef plays guitar.
Off 13: Wachapreague
Venture off the highway just four miles to Wachapreague, “The Little City by the Sea.” Dine on local seafood at the Island House, or catch your own on a charter fishing or clam-digging trip. Ride the Wachapreague Inn’s boat taxi to a relaxing day on a sandbar.
Catch the Ferry
Operating spring through fall, the Tangier Ferry is a Chesapeake Bay workboat outfitted to take visitors 12 miles out to Tangier Island in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. Spend the day walking the island’s narrow lanes, take a golf cart tour (there are no cars here), and sample the softshell crabs this island is best known for. You’ll no doubt get an earful of the local Tangier dialect, related to the Elizabethan English spoken by the island’s first settlers.

Mark Crockett, Tangier Island “I love everything about Tangier — it’s a way of life. It’s a unique place to live and there’s no other place like it in the world. I wouldn’t trade it for anywhere in the world. I love living there. When I was raising my kids you could just let them go, you can’t do that everywhere. My grandkids are coming up now and they can just go out and play. It’s really nice.”

he Eastern Shore begins — and ends — at the famed Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel at the southern tip where drivers enjoy 20 plus miles of open water. Here, Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic waters meet, waves from both washing upon each other. Fishermen, vacationers, beachcombers and birdwatchers mingle. All are embraced by water. Those who travel a distance deserve a reward, and the Lower Shore delivers. Long walks on wild beaches are matched by equestrian rides through the pine forests, and every night brings the bounty of the sea to the table.
FUN FACT Built in 1964 to connect the Eastern Shore to Hampton Roads, the 20-mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is one of the world’s engineering marvels. Stop on the southernmost of the four islands to watch birds, battleships and container barges from the fishing pier and dine at the Chesapeake Grill in one of the most original spots in the world, the middle of the Chesapeake Bay.

Cape Charles is the perfect launch point for shopping, beaches, golf and outdoor adventures. You might spot an enormous mega–yacht docked at the Cape Charles Yacht Center. The nearby Bay Creek Resort is home to Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer signature golf courses right on the Chesapeake Bay, vacation rentals, a private beach and a restaurant. For a completely different experience, park the camper at Cherrystone Family Camping Resort and, just down the road, pick up some of the famed Cherrystone littlenecks for a roast over the campfire.
The lights stay on 24 hours at the fishing pier at Kiptopeke State Park, and down the beach a stretch, boats anchor offshore from the Sunset Grille with the stunning Chesapeake Bay BridgeTunnel as a backdrop. Up the road, Chatham Vineyard’s French vinifera grapes are turned into the Merlots, Chardonnays, Cabernets and blends that have earned the winery medals and accolades nationwide. Launch your kayak on a guided tour to the winery and, later in the evening, sip their Church Creek Steel Chardonnay at sunset at a restaurant overlooking the Chesapeake Bay.

Basecamp: Cape Charles
Preserved century-old buildings house chic boutique hotels and cozy inns, coffeehouses and eclectic shops in this former railroad town on the Chesapeake Bay. Get the local news around the pot-bellied stove at Watson’s Hardware, sit on a stool at Rayfield’s Pharmacy soda fountain, and walk to the half-mile public beach for a swim, kayak, or to watch the sunset.
Off 13: Machipongo
Visit the Barrier Islands Center to learn about the lives of those who lived on the remote sand islands that buffer Virginia’s Atlantic coastline, then get a healthy lunch at Machipongo Trading Company and pick up Coastal Roasting’s locally-roasted coffee.
Myrtis Ames, Capeville “When people ask me about the Eastern Shore I tell them that it’s a quiet place — if you’re looking for the city life it’s not here. You’ll find love, you’ll find trust, honesty, you’ll find giving, you’ll find peace, and you’ll find joy and contentment. A lot of folks say this is God’s country. #visitesva www.esvatourism.org 23
