Letter from the Editors A home holds more than a house can contain. While a house has walls, windows and doors, along with a roof to provide shelter, a home stores memories, dreams, and aspirations. Where is home when we live in an age of movement and transition at a constant rate? We three editors have spent a lot of time moving. This entailed packing boxes and luggage cases which would then travel a few miles or maybe even a few thousand miles. We wanted to explore what home is in Issue 32’s theme, Home Sweet Home. You will find in these pages different places – indoors and outdoors – that tell a story of where home is and what it means to our contributors. Thank you for letting us see a glimpse of something personal and for letting us into your home.

W.W. On behalf of the Editors

Minot Beach By Matt Nichol Photography by Wales Wong

An Atlantic vista; cerulean skies with wraith-like gossamer tendrils stretched along the horizon, and fading into sunset. It’s quiet, apart from the waves. Small waves today, murmurs; but there’s strength there. The ocean sleeps today. Minot Beach is a wide swath of coarse grey sand. A few years previous, it had been trucked back in and reconstructed after a perfect storm had eroded everything. Above the rocks, the beach is lined with weathered, pale-coloured, east-coast houses, wooden window frames, perpetually peeling paint, and window glass reflecting muted, low-angle sunlight. The ocean has no memory, but some of the windows do. Behind those windows, different owners, different stories, secrets even, but outwards, always seaweed and granite, long-winged seabirds, and Storms rolling in along the coast. It’s been a few years since I learnt to camp without a tent, and it is remarkable how your perspective changes without a tent. The boundaries are gone. The training wheels are lost to a plastic bin in the garage. Learning how to camp without a tent is easy: you just stop bringing the tent. The general goal remains the same: stay warm, stay dry. Insects introduce a different complication. I remember once camping near a marsh, on Cedar Lake, near Brent, Ontario, along the northern edge of Algonquin Park. The insects were so thirsty, so desperate, that not even the top of my head was safe. After being forced to use repellant like shampoo, they came for the insides of my ears. Worse yet, this went on, and on, and on, and on, even in the rain. They were that desperate. I was lucky to have a tent. Thankfully, it’s different here - in November - as dusk rises in the east. Nature isn’t quite as thirsty in November, atop the rocks and the tide. Now I sit here, thinking of poetry, while the evening spreads out against the sky.

82 | VEUX | ISSUE 32 | HOME SWEET HOME

The air is slightly cold off the water, but I’m Canadian. I’m warm and dry perched on the rocks, dusk is rolling in along the coast, and Venus is behind me, moving East, pale yet. Some of us aren’t compelled into the West. Sunlight wanes above my onenight cheap hotel. It’s not Walden Pond, but I feel Thoreau would approve. Now, winter looms while desiccated flotsam serves as kindling. The driftwood burns well in a sheltered crevice atop the seawall. Occasionally, it dances to a gust, or crackles while consuming a gnarl in the wood. I’m warm in my bedroll, and there’s a can of beer in my hand. “T’ings are grand,” as the Irish say. My pack is beside me; military issue, and purchased from a veteran. Between us, the pack has certainly travelled. Training in Utah and Arizona apparently, then a campaign in Afghanistan. There was a strange insect inside the pack when I first brought it home. It was a weird centipede-like thing. It was quickly slaughtered. Then Algonquin backcountry; nights under silent south-shore hemlock groves, always facing north. That was the first time I camped without a tent. What solitude! Or a different adventure, Killarney, atop pale quartzite hills, and looking out on Georgian Bay with my best friend in the entire world. That vista… And then turning around; looking inwards at the Canada immortalized in paint by the Group of Seven. Paradise. At night, the Milky Way, a magical swath of gossamer starlight, encircles our heavens with love. Tonight though; memories of long dark hair on my pillow. Of things being great, and then being the opposite of great.

HOME SWEET HOME | ISSUE 32 | VEUX | 83

My fire is small, mostly embers, but warm. I swear, the best tool in my kit is the folding saw. Firewood becomes so easily accessible. There’s no moon tonight, but Venus supervises. Looking out at the horizon, with eyes as sharp as shattered windowglass, I can spot a cargo-ship lit up, and traversing slowly, from left to right. Nearby there’s a submarine tower staring out to sea. It’s slightly to the north, and visible above an outcropping of weathered pitch pine. These pines along the coast are stunted: contorted by a combination of storms and time. Trees always remind me of the toils of humanity, and these have weathered some difficult things, yet endure, nonetheless. The embers surge with a brief shift in the wind, and waves murmur below. Maybe one day I can share this with someone else. Maybe someone will decide they want to stay. Sometimes we revisit. Sometimes we reflect. But there’s an element of evaluation and criticism in reflection. Sometimes we want to remember things without evaluating ourselves, without considering what we may have done wrong. Sometimes we want to remember simply because there is happiness in a moment, or a memory. But sometimes we revisit and reflect and we don’t want to: we think of ghosts, failures, phantoms, and those who have already left. Sometimes, we carry Important People out of churches, in polished wooden boxes. Moments of both pride and sorrow. The past, it haunts us sometimes, and I don’t like going back to visit. But sometimes we go back to a beach that we love, just to be close to a memory of warm hearts and generous souls. Family. Sometimes we sleep beneath Venus as it travels East through a pantheon of starlight, while we dream of someone else, just as far away. And in the morning, sunrise.
