Letters from the Editor I cannot believe fours years have passed since VEUX’s inaugural issue! Who would have thought that one fateful afternoon tea outing with two new industry friends would give birth to one of the most important personal and professional relationships in my life? When Vi Vien, Wales, and I first began our journey into publishing, we heard many warnings about working with friends as well as magazines “failing” in their first year. However, we didn’t let them deter us. We always had a clear goal of what we wanted to achieve with our magazine, which I believe has been a key to our continued success and strong partnership. I am so proud of how far VEUX has come. It took a lot of hard work from the editors as well as much love and support from our contributors and readers to make us what we are today, and I view each one of our issues as a huge success. We grow with each publication as a magazine, as editors, and as members of this wonderful community. One of my favourite parts about VEUX are our diverse themes and seeing how they are interpreted all around the globe. Our worldwide teams of contributors have taught us much about fashion and lifestyle as each issue presents something new to us and our readers.

2011 at MoRoCo Chocolate tea room where the concept of VEUX Magazine was born! But, most importantly, I am beyond grateful for the two intelligent, strong, beautiful women standing beside me today. Working with Vi Vien and Wales has been an honor and a blessing. Over the past four years, they have truly become my family; I could not imagine sharing such a fun, but also important position with anyone else. I am looking forward to many more issues with my co-editors, our contributors, as well as you, the readers! Happy 4th birthday, VEUX!

Sometimes, the best and biggest things in life can come from innocuous beginnings. Sometimes, great opportunities show up in understated ways. VEUX Magazine had its official start in 2011 but it really started in the two years leading up to that. I met Ada on a random photoshoot and we hit it off immediately. You always hear the horror stories of stuck up models but Ada was the opposite of that: she was incredibly down to earth, smart, and friendly. This is an industry where you try to network but too often, business cards and contact information exchanges simply lead to spammy email messages. With Ada, we struck up an easy friendship and she introduced me to her agent, with whom I signed. I met Wales through an online modeling and photography website. She contacted me about collaborating on a photoshoot and to say I was flattered is an understatement. I loved her crisp and bright images - so much so that four years later, I asked if she would be the photographer at my wedding. VEUX Magazine started after we met for an afternoon tea at MoRoCo Chocolate tea house in Toronto. After the usual catch up, our conversations somehow turned to the topic of working as newcomers to the modeling, photography and entertainment business and the struggles of independent artists. It’s not easy; how do you get a foot in the door? How do you develop a good portfolio of work and find paying clients? We realized that many of our talented friends and colleagues were working with incredible teams on photography projects that would be posted online on their various portfolio sites, flickr accounts and Facebook pages - but beyond that, it was exceedingly difficult to get additional traction in the market. How do you get attention from the right people? How do you get your work out there? Photography by Wales Wong Photography

We started VEUX Magazine (and its parent company AVW Publishing Inc) as a way for creative and talented people to be able to meet with clients and agencies with a built up a body of published work and a healthy resume. We wanted to help artists get the ball rolling with publishing their works. Since our inception, we have published a huge range of “expertise”: students in school, weekend hobbyists, professionals with their own studios and everything in between. It has truly been a privilege to work with every photographer, model, make-up artist, designer, wardrobe stylist, writer, actor, musician and artist in each of our 25 issues. It has been a blessing and an honour to work with both Wales and Ada. With them, I have professional, hard-working and excellent partners with whom I know we can continue to grow, learn and succeed. Here’s to many more years and many more issues!

Vi Vien Hoang, Editor

4 | VEUX | ISSUE 25 | 4TH ANNIVERSARY

For me, our triangular relationship was the result of two serendipitous opportunities to collaborate together on creative projects which resulted in a photoshoot with Ada in 2009 and then on a separate occasion in 2010 with Vi Vien. No one can tell how events will run its course. When we met over afternoon tea in 2011, which was originally just a get-together of three ladies (who had really busy schedules because it took us awhile to set a date for the meet-up!) with a love for scones and chocolate, it turned into an exciting venture to create a publication to support artists in our fields. Since that day, I can say that we’ve grown together not only as business partners, but as friends who have supported each other through personal achievements while weathering the stormy seas of change. It’s a given that running a magazine such as VEUX Magazine for the past four years takes hard work and commitment. However, I’ve always been in awe of how our different personalities complement each other. I’m a firm believer in the fortune of the number “3” and our partnership has resulted in many chances and challenges to develop our skills and talents both separately and collaboratively. Each issue that we’ve created has been the submitted work of many individuals and I humbly thank you for your trust in us and for believing in our abilities to put out a publication that can represent your talents. My special gratitude to Yawen Chan who generously helped us create our website and address our gazillion questions when it came to using and maintaining the site and aspects of our social media. While I look back often to reflect on how VEUX Mag has evolved, it is also with elation that I look forward to the future issues and the opportunities that lie ahead for Ada, Vi Vien, and I. Cheers to more years of VEUX!

SUMMER MAKEUP - Dial Up the Colour By Patricia Lee Photography by Wales Wong With the sun shining bright, it’s time to amp up the skin and dial up the colour when it comes to summer makeup. The key to wearing bold colours beautifully is to have a beautiful canvas your skin - for the colours to sit on. This summer, it’s time to ditch the bronzing and contouring for the new skin trend seen across runways: strobing. What is it? It’s all about taking a highlighter or a concealer that’s a shade lighter and applying it on areas of the face where light would naturally hit: the brow bones, cheekbones, bridge of the nose, cupid’s bow, and inner corners of the eyes. This clean new makeup trend is refreshing, simple, and perfect for the summer when the heat calls for less layers of makeup. My top picks for this technique are Benefit Watt’s Up highlighter (my favourite) which is a cream stick highlighter that sets in a satiny powder finish and the Make Up For Ever full cover concealer which has great staying power. Now with that perfectly glowing canvas, play around with some colour! My go-to for a large colour selection of eyeshadow and lipstick shades is Shu Uemura. The texture is so smooth and the staying power is amazing. Remember when using bold colours, focus on one feature of the face at a time. When choosing a colourful lip, opt for simple eyeliner and mascara. When playing with bright eyeshadows, keep the lips neutral. The new Shu Uemura collaboration with Paris-based accessory and jewelry designer Yazbukey offers a fun new “pop art-esque” palette and pressed eyeshadows perfect for the summer. The collection also boasts a range of richly coloured matte lip shades. The key for summer makeup is to keep things fresh, bright, and fun. Be bold and experiment!

She worked as the official makeup artist for the Japanese brand for two years and now continues her freelance artistry in bridal, corporate and commercial. The Stop Night Market 2015 by Douglas Heung

The Stop’s Night Market has set itself apart from other food festivals in Toronto by providing a relaxed and artistic vibe paired with succulent bites from some of the best restaurants in the city. For the previous three years, it was held at the laneway of Honest Ed’s. The surrounding walls of the Toronto institution created an intimate, yet friendly neighbourhood atmosphere for two consecutive nights of snacking and sipping. When it was announced that Honest Ed’s would be closing down, it left a lot of fans wondering, where would the night market go from here onwards? Would The Stop still host the Night Market event in the following years? To the relief of many, The Stop was pleased to announce that the event would continue indeed. The 2015 edition of the Night Market was held at the vacant lot at 181 Sterling Road, which is about 12 minutes away from Lansdowne TTC station. Despite being further west from the downtown core, this did not deter festival goers from forming long lines when there was forty-five minutes before opening. The smell of fried food being prepared warmed up everyone’s appetite and there was a tangible level of excitement for people who wanted to meet their favourite chefs. Once 7:00 pm hit, the floodgates opened and there was the inevitable mad rush towards their favourite stalls.

FEATURE Where people would go largely depended on the type of foodie they are. Do you go to your favourite vendor first as a show of your devotion and loyalty towards their food? Or do you take the adventurous route and take a gamble on something completely unfamiliar to you? Lines would develop at certain stalls faster than others, establishing themselves as the popular pick from the get go. Others would sit patiently as people passed by, confident in the knowledge that at some point the rush would subside and people slowed down, their curiosity would kick in. For me, my first choice was to hit up Nana and sample the Southern Fried Chicken Labb. Crispy bites of chicken and the northeastern Thai flavours played the role of the starter perfectly. The nice thing about finger foods is that it’s easy to eat while walking to the next stall. One of the best surprises of the evening was the appearance of Hot Chicken not once, but twice at the Night Market. While Toronto is no slouch in the fried chicken department, Nashville Hot Chicken is something that is sorely missing in the local food scene. I had first heard of this while watching PBS’ The Mind of A Chef. Having consumed many blazing hot wings at Duff’s and sweet and spicy wings at Korean Fried Chicken spots, I was no stranger to spicy chicken. However, Hot Chicken is a more interesting take on the traditional fried chicken recipe. The chicken is seasoned and marinated before frying, and then coated in a fiery paste before being served with bread and pickles. Out of all the stalls at the Night Market, Broncos and Hopgoods Foodliner provided their own takes on Nashville Hot Chicken. Bronco’s variation went for the one-bite route, taking small nuggets of chicken and coating them with an intensely hot sauce that left you running back to the beer tent for another half-pint to wash it down. Meanwhile, Hopgoods Foodliner opted to serve Hot Chicken in a sandwich form, placing the chicken right between a dense bun and some tasty pickled cabbage. Their version was gentler with the heat, but it also allowed you to savour the juicy chicken which contrasted nicely with the cooling crunch of the pickles.

FEATURE This year, the evening’s entertainment was provided by local performers such as Crooked House Road and Boxcar Boys. Keeping in tradition with previous years, the performances would move throughout the venue instead of remaining in a set location. Even though the venue was buzzing from all the discussion about the great food and drink at the event, the music certainly added a great vibe.

At the middle of the venue, there was a display model of a cornucopia with the words “Good food for all” written in LED strip lighting. This was a subtle reminder to everyone that attended that not only was The Stop Night Market a celebration of great food from local talent, it was a means of spreading awareness for The Stop’s various food programs. At its core, The Stop Community Food Centre’s role is to provide food access to those in need and to support community-building programs. These include (and are not limited to): a food bank, drop-in meals, community cooking & gardening, perinatal nutrition and support, education for children & youth, peer advocacy, and civic engagement. All in all, The Stop’s Night Market continues to be a highly successful event. The level of interest for this event was still very high despite the change in venue. With the support of many of Toronto’s new and veteran restaurants, it was still a great sampling of what Toronto’s restaurants have to offer. Until next year!
