The Joy of RENOVATING For this issue, this spot was left to the imagination of our in-house design consultant and resident style authority, Lisa Chappell Miller, who happens to know a thing or two about renovating and transforming lackluster spaces into majestic, functional and livable areas. Enjoy!

R

enovating. Probably the most exciting and terrifying single word in the construction glossary. This one word holds so much promise of all that is possible and masks so much that can go so wrong, causing even the toughest of contractors to quiver! VETTA HOMES celebrates those who choose to skip the easy route of new construction to breathe new life into an existing structure. New construction is not a cakewalk, there are issues but in theory, with a well thought out plan, there are no surprises since you are starting with a blank slate. Renovations, however, are full of the unknown. What is behind the wall? Where are the plumbing pipes and electrical wires running? How can the half of the house with the new addition not be up to code… and oh, it was built without a permit and no one noticed or cared 20 years ago? What do you mean we have three structural grades of flooring to correct? Really, they changed the wiring in one part of the run but left outdated wires in the wall too? How much longer and how much extra will it cost to complete? Just in time for the transformative spirit brought on by spring, the Austin Home and Garden Shows injected enthusiasm into many DIY homeowners wanting to make both big and little changes in their personal spaces. Meanwhile, home improvement TV shows entice us to try something new or fix something we have been living with but have always wanted to change. Our options are unlimited but unfortunately our wallets aren’t! After six major renovations of my own homes and dozens for clients, I know the pain, joy and sweat equity of renovations on a personal level. We at VETTA HOMES are thrilled to share all types of construction projects with you. And even tight magazine deadlines can’t force a renovating project to be completed on time for print, so keep an eye out for a couple of overdue, but very well done, renovations to be featured in a future issue of VETTA HOMES! Wishing you luck while you rock that renovation,

HIGH STYLE for the WORLD A LOOK AT LAS VEGAS MARKET 2015

I

n the spirit of commemorating some of the amazing anniversaries marked this year, Las Vegas Market just turned 10 years with the celebration of their winter edition, which ran Sunday, January 18, through Thursday, January 22, 2015. Production executives reported that it has been the highest attendance numbers in its history, as well as a magnificent display of brands and vendors from across the US and abroad. Presenting a unique cross-section of 2,200+ resources in an unrivaled market destination, the bi-annual event is an excellent opportunity for retailers and designers to shop a broad assortment of product from thousands of manufacturers of furniture, mattress, lighting, decorative accessories, floor coverings, home textiles, tabletop, general gifts and more. “Winter Las Vegas Market was a clear and dramatic success by virtually every measurement, including overall attendance growth; the increasing number, diversity and quality of resources; orders written, and new

contacts made,” said Bob Maricich, chief executive officer, International Market Centers. “Virtually every showroom on every floor was abuzz with activity. The incredible 21% gains in gift and home décor attendance reflect the intensive efforts we have put into developing this segment of the market.” According to New York-based designer Kathy Kuo, Las Vegas Market is easy to shop because “everything is here, in three buildings.” For her high-end clients, she’s able to find what she needs: “In terms of better home décor, all of our really higher end brands such as Global Views, Mr. Brown, Noir Furniture…they’re all in Las Vegas with great showroom presence…they have large showroom space…I think they have a HUGE assortment of furniture and home décor.” Fresh off the largest Winter Market in its history, Las Vegas Market is looking to the future, with the upcoming Summer Market— running August 2 to August 6, 2015— representing the culmination of its three-year strategic growth plan as well as the Market’s 10-year anniversary celebration. Highlights planned for the Summer Market include the debut of two floors dedicated to the outdoor furniture industry, with 250,000 square feet on the 12th and 13th floors in Building C featuring a combination of permanent showrooms and temporary exhibit space. More than 13 leading casual manufacturers have already signed long-term leases with Las Vegas Market; many more exhibitors are expected to announce their participation in the coming months. Summer Market also will mark the debut

of two additional new showroom floors in Building C: C5 for boutique home décor, highend home textiles and accessories, which previewed at Winter Market and received rave reviews; and C11, a showroom floor focusing on gourmet housewares, tabletop and gifts. To facilitate growth and create room for these new showroom floors, Las Vegas Market is launching The Pavilions @ Las Vegas Market in existing permanent enclosed structures on the Las Vegas Market campus. The Pavilions will showcase temporaries previously housed on C5 and C11 along with an entirely new temporary offering featuring a cohesive collection of home décor, decorative accessories, personal/fashion accessories and trend forward gift exhibits. Respect the

CLASSICS CELEBRATING OVER SIX DECADES OF STYLE BY KARTELL

K

artell’s unique attitude of color, energy and joy has set a high standard in modern design worldwide for over six decades, and last year marked the 15th anniversary in the US. The company, headquartered in Milan and founded by Giulio Castelli, began in 1949 with the mission to manufacture automobile accessories, and expanded into home furnishings in 1963. The company opened its first store in the United States in 1998, when a Kartell outlet opened on Greene Street in New York City. Ivan Luini, president of the U.S. division at that time, oversaw the opening of additional stores in Miami, San Francisco, Atlanta, Boston and Los Angeles. It was through the vision and works of designer and architect Anna Castelli Ferrieri that the brand started

drawing significant recognition, by establishing their signature aesthetic. Since then, the world of Kartell has been continually evolving into their vision of transparent perfection. Kartell products are immediately recognized worldwide for the excitement they create, their durable functionality and undisputed quality. The continuous fruition in their use of materials and experimentation with new technologies have allowed the design studio to introduce glazing, transparency, flexibility, weather resistance, softness and touch. The products are multifunctional and cross-sectional, easy to use and with undeniable visual appeal. In its 60 years of activity, Kartell has won an enviable string of prestigious international awards, including nine Compasso d’Oro prizes. In 2000, the Guggenheim Museum dubbed the Kartell Museum the “best industrial museum”. Some of the world famous designers that have collaborated with Kartell

include Philippe Starck, Ron Arad, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Antonio Citterio, Michele De Lucchi, Patrick Jouin, Ferruccio Laviani, Piero Lissoni, Patricia Urquiola, Marcel Wanders, Tokujin Yoshioka, Vico Magistretti, Alberto Meda, Enzo Mari, Paolo Rizzatto and Maarten Van Severen. This all-star design lineup has developed a special intuition through dialogue and the continual exchange of design ideas. This has served to establish a perfect balance between each designer’s project experience and the company’s potential and demands. The last 15 years of transparent design were defined by unique technological and aesthetic challenges, launched in 1999 with the La Marie chair. Currently, the displays in all the Kartell flagship stores around the world (curated by Ferruccio Laviani, in charge of Brand & Corporate Identity) are a beautiful illustration of Kartell’s main symbols and their great cultural significance.

GHOST CHAIR One of our all-time favorites turned 10 years in 2012. For the birthday celebration, Kartell established the “Louis Ghost 10th Anniversay around the world” project with Case da Abitare magazine, in which the armchair traveled to 10 international cities, as interpreted by shots by the same number of prestigious photographers. All of the main flagship stores then used the incredibly beautiful photos for staging projects and ad hoc windows. 36 VETTAHOMES.COM

BOURGIE After the great successes in Paris and New York involving 19 international celebrities among the designers of the Kartell team (from Patricia Urquiola to Philippe Starck and from Nendo to Lissoni), and made in USA artists (including Pharrel Williams and Kelly Wearstler), Bourgie traveled to the Middle East last year and got a very distinct design treatment from some of Dubai’s hottest designers.

UNCLE JACK SOFA

The largest piece ever industrially produced in polycarbonate, the company helmed by Claudio Luti renews a challenge that began in 1999 together with Philippe Starck.

Kartell creativity and technology, glamour and functionality, quality and innovation - an extraordinary combination of factors - along with a strategic vision of distribution have contributed to the lasting success of Kartell. A leader in design, Kartell addresses an international clientele with a collection unique in originality, variety and depth of range. Cheers to many more years of design excellence! VH

Art Gathering

ART CITY AUSTIN RETURNS THIS APRIL

T

he Art Alliance Austin is proud to produce the 65th Annual Art City Austin - a juried art fair featuring over 115 local and national artists working in a variety of mediums. It is the largest art marketplace in Central Texas, selling original artwork at various price points. The festival also features great live music, local food trailers, craft beer and cocktails, and interactive projects for kids of all ages, making this an event for the whole family. “Art City Austin is the culmination of a national juried art competition,” said Asa Hursh, Executive Director of Art Alliance Austin. “We’ve attracted some incredible artists from all across the country -- from California, to Georgia, to Chicago, to Pennsylvania. We’re bringing back many of our favorite and most popular artists as well as attracting some new talent that will be showing at Art City Austin for the first time. Art City is Austin’s biggest art marketplace and the best place to build a collection, add to an existing one, or even just see some great art and meet the artists themselves.” This year’s Art City Austin will feature something brand new - a curated contemporary art area called the “Austin Art Pavilion” presented by Tito’s Handmade Vodka. The pavilion will feature work produced by regional artists and is curated by local experts including Thao Votang and Brian Willey of Tiny Park Gallery, Rebecca Marino of Pump Project, Troy Campa of Camiba Art, Austin Nelsen of Co-Lab Projects and Rachel Stephens of Wally Workman Gallery. “Art City Austin is the second oldest outdoor festival in a city that seems to have a limitless number of festivals - that’s saying something,” said Hursh. “This year we’ve also worked very hard so that all components of the festival reflect our vibrant creative community. Although Art City’s focus is art, the festival is also packed with other activities for kids and adults. We’re assembling the best food truck court in town, we’ll have kids activities, craft beer from Austin Beerworks and a special Art City cocktail designed by Tito’s Handmade Vodka. And we’re thrilled to partner with Austin’s top music talent to be featured on the Black Fret Music Stage presented by KUTX, showcasing Elizabeth McQueen, Jonny Gray, Graham Wilkinson, and Amy Cook among others.” Art City Austin is taking place on Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 26 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in downtown Austin. The festival, which is the second oldest outdoor festival in Austin, will take place on Cesar Chavez Street between Guadalupe and Lamar. Tickets are available online. (artallianceaustin.org) VH

O

n January 31, 2015 something big was about to happen at the Santa Rita Ranch subdivision in Georgetown, Texas. A parade of motorcycle riders from the Texas Combat Veteran’s Association, Boy Scouts, photographers, reporters and the Liberty Hill High School Band stood ready to escort an American hero and his family to their new, custom built home. A media photography drone followed the path of the white SUV that carried Marine SSGT Ray Coffey around the corner, past Texas Longhorn mascot Bevo and through the huge crowd of well-wishers, capturing the moment he embraced 3-Star General Willie Williams as he saw his completed home for the first time.

A hero is FINALLY HOME

was nowhere near enough to cover the extensive renovations needed for this young man to be able to move back to his parents’ home, where his mother would become his primary caregiver. “It was like a bolt of lightning struck me and I realized that this must be happening to families all over the country. I told them to keep the money and with the help of several Houston area builders, we got the job done.” In examining the process of remodeling existing houses, it became apparent that it is often more cost-effective to build a new home customized to the specific needs of the individual veteran and their families. For example, two story homes are restrictive to those with limited or no mobility, doors and halls are often too narrow for a wheelchair and bathrooms may not be able to accommodate two people. As a result, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization was formed in Houston under the Bay Area Builders Association umbrella to begin building the mortgage-free homes. The name was changed to OFH when the program became national.

The single-story, traditional ranch style home was built by Gary and Lana Henley of Henley Custom Homes in collaboration with Operation FINALLY HOME. This custom designed, mortgagefree home was made possible by by lisa chappell miller the very generous support of the building community both locally Operation FINALLY HOME is INSIDE THE COFFEY RESIDENCE and nationally. Because some were donated anonymously, we based on his military experience and his dedication to working with can’t name them all here, but every donation is appreciated, and this others like himself, wounded in combat. His charm and winning home would not be possible without them. Dancing With The Stars were also great for OFH. Dan Wallrath, a soft-spoken homebuilder, is instrumental in building mortgage-free homes for severely disabled military personnel in Texas and all across the country. Based in New Braunfels, Texas, Wallrath’s OFH non-profit is well on it’s way to building 100 custom homes each year with the support of a combined network of small independent builders, large corporations, hardworking tradesmen and women, and the generous contributions of individuals willing to step up and help those who have given so much for our country. We at VETTA HOMES were honored to be a partner in the building of the home for SSGT Coffey’s family. THE OPERATION FINALLY HOME STORY In 2005, Wallrath was approached to work on a home remodel for a young soldier injured in Iraq. “After seeing the transformation this young man went thru, it just broke my heart,” he remembered. Some of the other notable celebrities who support OFH have included Kix Brooks, Vince Young, Gary Sinise, Queen Latifa, Big and Rich, Sugar Ray and Kid Rock. Rock, who met Wallrath in 2012, convinced him to come build in Michigan. Together, with the help of Pulte Homes, Rock and Wallrath presented a home to SGT Davin Duman and is wife Dana. DIVE RIGHT IN

W

ith the nice Texas heat just around the corner, VETTA HOMES celebrates the precious commodity of the pool! Customers who historically have been weary of the hefty price tag can breathe a little easier, as its specialized controller technology has become more and more accessible to clients. Although high-end pool owners have been using this technology for decades, today the average pool owner can add user-friendly controls for about two to three percent of the price of the pool. It’s not uncommon now to receive the option of wireless remotes, indoor control panels and spa side remotes, as well as smart programming in the starter package. For existing pools, adding these control systems is an easy and worthwhile retrofit. “By making available controls that look and function like the electronics consumers are already familiar with, pool ownership has become a much more attractive endeavor,” according to Hank Thompson from Cascade Custom Pools, who has been in business for over 30 years. In light of their favorable works, Cascade Pools won the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) award in 2012, 2013 and 2014. (cascadecustompools.com)

picks PERRIN & ROWE CONTEMPORARY BRIDGE KITCHEN FAUCETS If you plan on staying in your home, splurge on a few chic items. What better item to upgrade than something you use every day, multiple times a day. A bridge faucet is always in style and this one from Perrin & Rowe will add an element of every day luxury you wouldn’t have known you were missing! I’ve shown my favorite finish, polished chrome. Today it is just fine to mix metal finishes throughout your home.

Guest Editor

HEATHER SCOTT “When it is time to renovate, following a “Classic, chic and serene” mantra will really help your investment dollars last longer. Renovating your home is costly and, as a homeowner, you should plan to spend wisely on design elements that will last. How do you do that? Focus on avoiding ‘trends’ but spend on classic elements, which will last through the years. Here are 6 of my favorite renovation elements.”

BANQUETTE If I have a client renovating a kitchen area, I usually look to see if there is a way to incorporate unique seating. Banquettes are just as comfortable for reading the paper and drinking coffee as they are for large family gatherings. You don’t have to ‘build in’ a banquette. Consider a customizable, freestanding piece, such as this banquette from Vanguard furniture. It is available in plenty of kid friendly options such as Sunbrella, Vinyl and Leather.

52 VETTAHOMES.COM

PAINT Perhaps the most affordable renovation solution is paint. Paint can be intimidating, but is a fairly inexpensive and easy selection to change down the road. I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and choose a dramatic paint color for impact. You might want to go neutral in the main areas of the home, but lesser used rooms, such as a dining room, powder bath or guest bedroom, are wonderful opportunities to test bolder color.

SHAW’S ORIGINAL FARMHOUSE SINK A fireclay, apron front sink will look just at home in a $100,000 house as it will in a $10,000,000 home. The ‘farmhouse’ sink has always been in style, only it has made its way from country homes into sophisticated spaces across the country. Different front styles are available, from modern and clean lined to a more traditional rounded style. The Shaw’s brand sinks have been made in England since 1897, a sure sign of a classic!

MILLWORK In my opinion, investing in the architectural envelope of your room will always pay dividends. The better the interior architecture of the home (ex. crown molding, wainscoting, coffered ceilings) the less you will need to spend on décor. Shiplap paneling is my favorite millwork design. This ‘beach-y’ look can also be found in country cottages and lakeside retreats. Paneling can make a formal home more approachable and take a simple home and give it character.

LIGHTING I’ve said many times, lighting is the jewelry of the room. Scale is incredibly important when selecting items for your home. But, lighting is one area where I believe you should upsize and go a bit bigger than the standards recommend. When choosing hanging lighting, add the length and width for the diameter for your new light fixture. I like to take this number and go up from that figure for greater impact.

Inspired by sights of nature and by combining unique materials, the design studio brings to life exotic and distinctive scenery with their very distinctive aesthetic. Seen here is one of their latest creations, inspired by the majestic cosmos. The LED lights within the terrariums depict the stars as embraced by the geodes, agates, and crystals to embody the client’s appreciation for the universe’s celestial spaces. “Art becomes personified through our use of nature,” explained Dante Dominick from Articulture. Their services include sustainable landscape design, interior botanical art and décor, in addition to floral and plant décor for weddings and special events. “I am very inspired by the historical architecture in my two favorite cities: London and Paris.” - Lori Morris

C

hallenging the confines of traditional design, Lori Morris has been offering clients an exceptionally luxurious experience in the world of interiors since 1987. This firm employs over 25 workers, specializing in high-end residential and commercial properties. Although Lori Morris lives in Toronto, she has practiced her unparalleled art both nationally and internationally in Ontario, California, New York, Florida, Colorado, Jerusalem, India, Italy and France. VETTA HOMES recently touched base with the talented designer to discuss her history, interior design style and process. VH: WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? DOES YOUR CURRENT HOUSE LOOK ANYTHING LIKE THE ONE YOU GREW UP IN? LM: “I grew up just west of Toronto, Canada in an old stone house set on beautifully landscaped gardens. I would say one thing that is consistent between my current home and my family home is sophisticated eclecticism. There are lots of different fabrics, textures and patterns.” VH: HOW DID YOU FIRST KNOW YOU WANTED TO BECOME AN INTERIOR DESIGNER? DID YOU EVER CONSIDER EVENT PLANNING OR ARCHITECTURE? IF SO, HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON INTERIOR DESIGN, AND WHERE DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL? LM: “I have always been inspired by interior design. When I was ten, I designed my own bedroom and from there I was hooked. I studied at the International Academy of Merchandising and Design and then founded Lori Morris Designs in 1987. I have always been inspired by architecture, landscaping and beautiful couture designs, but interior design is where my heart is and where my creativity flourishes.” VH: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? LM: “My personal style is sophisticated rockerchic. I love to have fun with fashion. I get a lot of inspiration from it for my interiors. Some of my favorite designers include Dolce & Gabbana and Fendi Casa.” VH: WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN STYLE AND PROCESS LIKE? LM: “My designs all have a certain Lori Morris soul and elegance to them, but they cannot be defined as one particular style. I create very personal and intimate spaces for my clients, catering to their visions. All my spaces are especially unique because the furniture is custom designed by myself. I can create very modern spaces and more neo-classical, French-inspired spaces. I have been

called a chameleon in that regard. In terms of process, we always ask our potential new clients, “What feeling do you want to achieve when the house is complete?” Key words that usually come to mind are: tranquility, zen, opulent elegance, contemporary sleek, sexy, soft and warm. When trying to get an understanding of what this feeling is, we might also ask, “Is there a place that gives you a great feeling that you want us to emulate?” From there, we can orchestrate the design. I work with my team to create perspectives and inspiration boards and once the idea is approved we start to build and work with the contractors. I travel around the world to find special antiques and pieces of art for my clients, and at times, my clients will travel with me.” VH: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE MATERIALS OR TEXTURES TO WORK WITH? LM: “There are so many materials that I love to work with. It is sort of my signature to layer a number of different fabrics and create something really unique, or something that my client never even knew they wanted. That being said, if I had to choose, I would say velvet and suede are my top two.” VH: YOU HAVE A DIVERSE, ARTISTIC AND DETAILED APPROACH TO DESIGN. FROM LITERATURE TO THEATER TO ART, WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES? LM: “I am very inspired by the historical architecture in my two favorite cities: London and Paris — particularly the older French chateaus. I have also always been and continue to be inspired by Ralph Lauren. He has such a great sense of style and eclecticism, and I feel that he really understands the balance between creativity and proportion. Art is another major influence in my designs, and I always look forward to purchasing it for my clients. A great piece of art can determine the vision for an entire room. Some of my favorite artists include Russell Young and Dorion Scott.” VH: WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE YOUR STRENGTH? LM: “My biggest strength is definitely my ability to take a creative and artistic approach to every project that I do. I build custom pieces and create designs that can never be emulated. I also think a major strength of my business is our unparalleled concierge service. We take care of everything for our clients, even including moving their clothes back in and hanging them in their closet. I also travel around the world to places like London and Paris either with my clients or on my own to get inspiration and purchase art and antiques. We also house a number of finishes in our office, for example, textiles, floorings and hardware. It is a one-stop shop where clients can come in and look at all the options in one place. It is an unmatched experience in the industry.” VETTAHOMES.COM 63

VH: ANTIQUE OR MODERN? LM: “Both. I can create French neo-classical antique spaces, but I can also design very modern homes. It really depends on the individual and their personal style.”

“I love designing spaces that are beautiful and forward in design, but still welcoming and comfortable at the same time.”

VH: CITY OR COUNTRY? LM: “Both. I have done a number of spaces in cottage country like Muskoka, Canada as well as big cities, but I also enjoy bringing the country into the city with my designs. Some of my clients are after that really cozy feel in the city, so I have the opportunity to bring that country aesthetic in.” VH: IN YOUR OWN WORDS, WHAT SHOULD INTERIOR DESIGN DO OR BE FOR THOSE WHO ARE TO ENJOY IT? LM: “For me, design is all about a feeling. That’s why it is so important for me to ask my clients first and foremost what feeling they want to achieve when the home is complete. I am a big homebody, so the way my home makes me feel is important. I think that is what interior design is all about. I love designing spaces that are beautiful and forward in design, but still welcoming and comfortable at the same time.” VH: HOW DID YOU LAND YOUR FIRST INTERNATIONAL GIG? LM: “I secured my first international gig when one of my clients purchased a home in Big Sky, Montana. The view of the mountains was incredible, so that made it an exciting project. We keep our clients for years and years. We do their homes, their kids’ homes, their second and third homes. We are able to keep them happy, because we are able to deliver new vision as their style evolves. This has really contributed to the success of our business.” VH: WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR BEAUTIFUL CASEY KEY ROAD PROJECT IN SIESTA KEY, FLORIDA? WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT ABOUT THIS PROJECT? LM: “I became involved through a client of mine in Canada that was purchasing a beach house in Florida, and it took eight months to complete. We had the crew there working at a fast pace, because we wanted to ensure the property was ready for the summer season. I think my favorite part of the property is that it was literally 20 feet from the ocean, and the views were absolutely stunning. I couldn’t wait to create an interior that looked out onto something so beautiful. I also loved that it was one floor. It had an extremely open floor plan where rooms flowed into each other, and it gave me the opportunity to spread the color palette so evenly throughout the home.”

66 VETTAHOMES.COM

VH: WHICH PROJECTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF TO DATE? LM: “I am proud of all of my projects, especially those where clients give me the freedom to act as an artist from start to finish (whether it be a condo, city home or a cottage). For me, it is all about having a blank canvas to work with and creating a space that is both unique and comfortable.” VH: WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER? LM: “I believe there are few challenges in life, only opportunities.” VH: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE ROOMS OR SPACES IN THE WORLD? LM: “It’s no surprise that I love Ralph Lauren. In fact, two of my favorite spaces in the world are the Ralph Lauren flagship store in Paris and the store in New York on Madison Avenue. I also love the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris. I don’t necessarily love the décor there, but the architecture and the feeling I get when I stay there are pretty incredible.” VH: WHICH CITY OR COUNTRY WOULD YOU MOVE TO FOR THE ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN? LM: “Paris and London. These are the two places that I travel to most for inspiration and to shop for different antiques and pieces for my clients.” VH: AUSTIN IS A BOOMING CITY IN THE REAL ESTATE SECTOR WITH A REPORTED 110 PEOPLE MOVING HERE EVERYDAY. WHAT DESIGN STYLE WOULD YOU WANT TO BRING TO THIS CITY, IF GIVEN THE CHANCE? LM: “I would love to bring new exciting finishes, textures and my custom furniture to your city. I get a lot of inspiration from my clients. I would love to meet residents in Austin and understand their style and then combine their personal vision with my own unique design style and process to create something magical.” VH: THREE THINGS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? LM: “Can I have four? My family. My team. My bed. My hairdresser.” VH: WHAT’S NEXT ON THE HORIZON? LM: “I look forward to continuing to showcase my artistic and creative abilities in original projects all over the world. I am also working on a special collaboration that I can’t share with you just yet…” VH: WHAT INSPIRES YOU? LM: “I get most of my inspiration from travelling around the world. I always say that all I need is great architecture and couture designs.” (lorimorris.com) VH

TREASURES OF OLD

T

here is a gem hidden deep in the heart of San Antonio; a haven for antique riches that has been offering collectibles and artwork to the most distinguished designers and homeowners for years. VETTA HOMES is in love with the curated mix of nostalgia found at Sanderson Antiques. The casual relaxed small shop is filled with treasures and relics of things that owner Sherrie Sanderson found irresistible. The shop specializes in 17th through 18th century European antiques; chandeliers, fortuny, painted commodes, and whimsical objects are a few of the choices one might find. Headboards, tabletops, lamps, pillows and chairs become enchanted with tapestries and textiles. Contemporary art from local artisans hang from the walls along side soft rubbed gilt mirrors. Stacks of beautiful oushak rugs are folded in corners of each room. According to Sanderson, “the store is a culmination of refined subtle elegance that hopefully gives each individual some inspiration. (sandersonantiques.com)

The Essential

Sofa Guide SIX NOTABLE SOFA STYLES TO KNOW by maureen stevens

1

A living room is not complete without functional seating. And if you’re lucky, you may have one that’s both beautiful and comfortable. Unless of course you’re opting for a more formal seating where your guests can sit upright and behave like ladies and gentlemen. In the world of sofas, there’s a wide array --- from settees to sectionals, chaise lounges to sofa beds, but here are six notable styles. You may have seen them all over; now you’ll know what their style is all about.

MID-CENTURY MODERN

To say that Mid-Century Modern is “trendy” is an understatement. This design popular from 1965 to 1993 is now more than ever the choice of Generations X, Y and Z (Let’s thank the baby boomers though for glorious mid-century furniture that abounds today). So, what makes a piece mid-century modern? Look for it’s simplicity, clean lines and the organic feel. Baker Sofa, designed by Finn Juh ($18,490; dwr.com)

76 VETTAHOMES.COM

2

CABRIOLE Oohhh la la! With a back reminiscent of 18th-century Louis XV style, this sofa curves into the arms in a continuous line. The ends even curve inwards, almost like a cloak. Usually, the top trim of the back and arms and the legs are wooden. But new styles may have them without the wood trim. Zentique Maison Sofa ($2,970; houzz.com)

3

CHESTERFIELD

ENGLISH OR CLUB

If there is one iconic sofa, it would be the Chesterfield. With history dating back to the 1600’s, this sofa is the seating of choice by the elite and well-to-do. Picture gentlemen in distinctive suits with their hats and bowlers on & women all glammed up while sipping English teas and nibbling biscuits. The Chesterfield sofa has an unmistakable look & feel: it has quilted, tufted or buttoned-up upholstery, the seat is low and the arms are rounded. Higgins Sofa in Mont Blanc Evergreen leather ($2,200; rogerandchris.com)

4

Like the club chair, the Club or English sofa is all about lounging, that’s why everything is rounded - round arms and a rolled back for sink-in comfort. English sofas usually have low, turned legs on casters and no skirt. They also have tight backs and loose seats; it’s quintessential seating that’s both classic and timeless. Club Sofa in Spray ($1,199; cb2.com)

5 BRIDGEWATER This elegant and traditional seating may look like the English sofa but do not be deceived, this one’s a little more dainty with a skirt covering its legs. Like the English sofa, it has rounded arms and rolled arms. Custom Upholstered Bridgewater Sofa ($4,555; 1stdibs.com)

6

TUXEDO When you’re all about black tie and suits then the Tuxedo sofa is for you. It has clean lines and a back and arms that are the same height. It’s for the prim and proper and the formal. Yet do not be turned away by all the formality if you are the laid back type, just throw in a couple of throw pillows and this sofa can be just as cozy for you. Jodi Tufted Velvet Sofa in Teal ($1,599; onekingslane.com)

ROCK SOLID by lisa chappell miller

B

THE FOUNDERS OF PACIFIC SHORE STONES HAD A PASSION FOR THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF THEIR BRAZIL HOMETOWN, THAT HAS TURNED INTO A PROSPEROUS VENTURE OF UNIQUE MATERIALS, PRESENT AT THEIR 15 LOCATIONS AND ADORNING SOME THE FINEST HOMES IN THE US.

razil natives Vinny Tavares, Marco Pereira and Donald Ceciri opened their first Pacific Shore Stones location in Los Angeles in 2004. Today they own 14 wholesale stone distributorships across the US, including the 33,000-square-foot Austin showroom, opened in 2006. Over a decade later, Pereira and Tavares still mine in Brazil, as well as source their stone inventory from India, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, Vietnam, China, and Italy. The majority of the stone purchased today is quarried by 10 to 15 sources. It doesn’t hurt that the duo speak Portuguese and are able to travel up to 800 miles outside Sao Paulo, to unlock a network of over 100 suppliers that are unreachable to their biggest competitors. “We are proud to have exquisite, highly unique materials to offer our clients, most of them unseen in the mainstream US market. Our research

88 VETTAHOMES.COM

and connections result in amazingly beautiful stones for our discerning clientele,” added Tavares. “We love the advantage of providing some pretty exclusive access. Traveling overseas to hand-select every stone sets us apart from many competitors, who purchase stone from images on a computer”. STONE FUN FACTS VETTA HOMES had some fun asking some of the questions homebuyers and retailers are maybe wondering… We found out that each slab of stone weighs approximately 700-800 pounds (which puts Pacific Shore Stones ’ total stateside inventory at approximately 15 thousand tons!). Meanwhile, importing stone is a very costly endeavor. The cost of stone varies based on several factors, such as supply and demand, how rare it is, how easy it is to quarry, and local regulations that control how much of it can be quarried.

PSS partners Vinny Tavares and Marco Pereira.

Each block of stone can weigh up to 30 tons. Once purchased by the distributer it is transported and sliced. Blemishes hidden internally can be so severe that the stone is rendered worthless; thankfully this doesn’t happen often. As many know, granite is a very durable stone and is not usually high maintenance if it’s installed and sealed correctly. Buyers, please note that it’s wise to have granite sealed by your installer, to help prevent stains. “The best thing about natural stone is that each piece is unique, and new colors are still being discovered. One of the most exciting things for Pacific Shore Stones about stone purchasing is bringing in beautiful new stones to the market,” explained Pereira. GIVING BACK When asked about working with Operation FINALLY HOME, the guys at Pacific Shore Stones couldn’t be more

humble. “We’re incredibly proud and honored to support the great work of Operation FINALLY HOME. We became involved on the first project in Austin a couple of years ago, and since then we have also participated in a home in New Braunfels, as well as the recent Georgetown home. Other non-profits we support in the home building industry include Habitat for Humanity and Wounded Warriors,” added Tavares. TRENDS Currently there is a preference for white and grey slabs, especially in kitchens. “It really gives the impression of a modern, cleaner slate for cooking and it also responds to the resurgence in white tile,” the duo added. Alabama White is a marble mined in the United States. Quartz is also becoming very popular; they will be introducing their own line of quartzes this year. (pacificshorestones.com) VH

hat was once a home completely devoid of style and adequate space has now turned into a haven of modishness. Designed by architect Jay Corder and developed by David Wilkes Builders, this renovated Austin residence features the best luxuries in major worldwide cities, perfectly paired with tons of ATX charm. Designer Kasey McCarty incorporated the homeowners’ love of travel to create a space that fulfilled their deepest desire: for a home that felt as luxurious and accommodating as a 5 star hotel. The result was an addition that not only produced significant square footage, but also infused the residence with distinctive personality. A SPACE PROBLEM As the design firm has stated, the inspiration and goal for this addition was to reconfigure the layout of the main living areas in order to maximize the views of the lush exterior landscaping, pool area and extraordinary city views. The additional square footage created by the addition provided the space to add areas for guests to lounge without feeling cutoff from the activity. The rooms flow together seamlessly so that connections are maintained throughout the entertaining areas.

In an array of attractive materials and an overall look fitting for a downtown hotel, the table becomes a center for stylish entertaining and fun. Meanwhile, the addition now has another key player: an impressive – fully stocked – bar to host any party. Schemed by the talented Kasey McCarty, this attractive new piece used an Antolini Agate Slab, built by Vintage Materials. The bar countertop is Absolute Black Honed 3CM and the wall is black back painted glass. All the furniture and accessories seen here were brought in by Joe Morales at Nest.

OUTDOOR VIEWS The outdoor elements became big protagonists in this project, as landscaping became a huge labor of love for the homeowner. New windows and Durango Millennium Doors with tempered glass now allow the lush exteriors to become part of the interior views. Meanwhile, the outdoors connect seamlessly with the casual cool lounging that occurs indoor, as the Durango Doors lead guests outside onto the exterior covered porch or directs them to follow the garden path towards the pool. After the ambitious remodel, guests can now enjoy a refreshing Cosmopolitan while admiring views of the City of Austin. “The challenge with this space was creating a spot for guests to linger that wouldn’t obstruct the views,” explained the architecture firm. “Every room was designed for living as well as entertaining.” Easy transitions from room to room with various seating options encourage family and friends to gather and lounge. A WILD, WILD WORLD THE DISTINCT STYLE OF THE HAAS BROTHERS by coral talavera

IF YOU’RE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE HAAS BROTHERS’ VERY PARTICULAR WORK, IT’S YOUR LUCKY DAY. THIS AUSTIN DUO HAS TAKEN THE DESIGN WORLD BY STORM.

N

amed one of the top nine designer of 2014 by Artsy and worthy of collaboration with none other than Donatella Versace, the Haas brothers are not only innovative artists; some critics consider them to be true visionaries. The Austin-born twins have brought a highly unique aesthetic to the design world with their collection of sculptures, furniture and objects, ranging in colors, shapes and textures – and I must say that VETTA is somewhat partial to their hairy creations. Responsible for a remarkable collection of visual concepts (and barely over the age of 30), the twins have been featured in an impressive array of magazines, blogs and publications the world over. Since moving to LA in 2010, the brothers have continued to grow their design studio and spend their time prototyping and experimenting, which has resulted in a multifaceted operation that has acquired international accolades. VETTAHOMES.COM 99

“NIKI BRINGS A LOT OF THE ENERGY AND THE EXPRESSION, WHEREAS I’LL SPEND TIME ANALYZING AND RESEARCHING MATERIALS OR A DIRECTION FOR THE WORK.” – SIMON HAAS

RAGS TO RICHES Four years ago no one had heard of the twins. They were not creating art or design. Nikolai was a (then broke) vegan cook, while Simon was busy with property management projects and construction work. It wasn’t until brother Lukas – who happens to be best friends with Leonardo DiCaprio – got them a commission in 2010 to make a series of pedestals that the artistic genius in both sparked. Reportedly, actor Tobey Maguire saw the aluminum cubes they had contracted and was so impressed that he invited them to help with his search for an architect for his new house and to design the furniture for his Sony office.

100 VETTAHOMES.COM

Their work evolved significantly, as they have constructed everything from Cubist club chairs and globular brass vases to custom ceramic light fixtures and angel wings for Lady Gaga. Although the media has labeled them as furniture designers, they are sculptors, painters and craftsmen in a wide array of materials. The twins have experimented with raw resources like resin and metal, pushing these substances into shapes that seem to defy reality. For one of their signature looks, they used flat hexagonal brass tiles—typically able to adjoin only on a horizontal plane—in a series of stunning gold objects that have come to life as quirky footstools, chairs and benches.

A VISION OF WONDER Deeply influenced by the works of controversial actor, director and musician Vincent Gallo, the Hass brothers have set forth an aesthetic where sex is strongly present. However, we’ve reserved the right to go with a more cute side of the story, in which the bulk of their work here depicted speaks to a more fantastical vision. In their current works, occupied by extraordinary, multidimensional creatures, the Haas Brothers explore visual and formal themes related to nature, science fiction, psychedelia and color theory. Their mastery and unique use of materials ranging from brass, bronze, porcelain and fur to highly technical resins and polyurethane, matched with their insatiable curiosity and remarkable visual intelligence, sets them apart as artists. As stated in their interview with DesignBoom.com, “the Haas Brothers’ vision is defined by a surreal organic and zoomorphic landscape”. Their unique use of textures, colors and pots, sofas, tables and chairs is wildly intriguing. So much in fact, that Donatella Versace fell in love with their vision and commissioned them to make a line of furniture for her, which debuted on Salone de Mobile, Milan, stealing the show. The line was an instant hit and prices for the bondage bench rose from $125,000 to $450,000. Their body of work also includes costume props for Lady Gaga, exhibitions at both Art Basel and Design Miami, the commission of figurative runaway sculptures for designer Greg Chait’s cult fashion label, The Elder Statesmen, furnishing Peter Marino’s Louis Vuitton Maison in Shanghai and much more.

“SIMON IS VERY PHILOSOPHICAL AND COMES UP WITH A LOT OF IDEAS ON HOW WE SHOULD PRODUCE THINGS, AND I’M VERY HANDS ON WITH THE MATERIALS. WE HAVE VERY SPECIFIC ROLES WHICH WERE NEVER PRE-DETERMINED BUT WE’VE FALLEN INTO THEM BECAUSE OF OUR STRENGTHS.” – NIKI HAAS

WHAT’S NEXT This month’s Coachella Music Festival will be the stage for their next unveiling, as the duo has been commissioned by the producers to create a massive sculpture, which they’ll get to keep afterward. The brothers were eager to locate a piece of land near California’s Joshua Tree National Park (known for its otherworldly rock formations and the freakish flora that grow in this region of the Mojave Desert) to give the piece a perfect home, as opposed to schlepping it back to their Los Angeles studio. “We can’t talk about the sculpture,” says Nikolai (Niki to friends). “But it’s gonna be huge and it’s awesome, and it’s gonna live in the desert, and we’ll build bungalows around it and live out there, too.” VH

LENNON IN AUSTIN by coral talavera images courtesy of yoko ono

IT MAY BE NOT BE A WIDELY KNOWN FACT, BUT JOHN LENNON WAS A VISUAL ARTIST LONG BEFORE HE OWNED A GUITAR. AUSTIN WILL HAVE THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO WITNESS 72 OF HIS PIECES THAT EXPLORE PEACE, LOVE AND FAMILY.

V

ETTA HOMES could not be more excited to witness the works of none other than John Lennon at the Russell Collection Fine Art from April 23rd to the 26th. Thanks to the contribution of his widow, Japanese multimedia artist and peace activist, Yoko Ono, these exclusive, very limited reproductions of his art will be available for acquisition. For four days only, the gallery will present a mind-bending show that will demonstrate the legendary musician’s first love: visual arts. Offered through the Bag One Arts program, these posthumous, limited edition prints are adapted from Lennon’s original drawings. The art has been selected from rare archival sketches and is representative of his whimsical and thought provoking imagery. Each print is reproduced utilizing the sophisticated and detailed standards typical for archival fine art printing processes, guided, approved and hand-signed by Yoko Ono. LENNON, A VISUAL ARTIST In his art, John Lennon, the legendary musician, songwriter, poet, philosopher and artist, delivered a consistent message – peace and love. Art was actually his first love, as he began drawing long before he owned a guitar. His artwork celebrates human love and communication – two themes at the heart of his contribution to the art of the twentieth century. His iconic Self-Portrait image has become the cornerstone of the collection.

On Cloud Nine.

Lennon’s primary medium was line drawing either in pen, pencil, or Japanese sumi ink. His drawing became illustrations for three best selling books: In His Own Write (1950), A Spaniard in the Works (1965) and Skywriting By Word Of Mouth (1987). In addition, a complete suit of the Bag One portfolio of lithographs was donated to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where it remains in the permanent collection. The graphic collection has traveled throughout the US, England, Spain, Italy, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Hong Kong and Manila. VETTAHOMES.COM 105

THE BEAUTY OF NOACK LITTLE’S RETURN ON IMAGINATION

A

by jennifer swanson images courtesy of noack little

rchitecture and design firm Noack Little has a knack for transforming commercial spaces into moneymaking entities. Since 2002, the firm has been helping elevate brands through design to increase their ROI, or “Return On Imagination.” The firm’s tagline also refers to this as “The Noack Little Advantage,” a guiding design principle that focuses creativity on maximizing a client’s investment. “We believe good designs give you tangible results,” said Clay Little. Noack Little is sought after for their approach to identify deserted commercial properties and reposition them as high-performing/ high-appealing assets for both building owners/investors and tenants. Their 1300 Guadalupe project serves as the perfect example. The firm purchased a run down, abandoned building and completely renovated it into a beautiful, functional and highly desirable workspace that was fully leased by opening day. When 1300 Guadalupe first crossed the company’s radar, “the building had a whole lot of residents,” joked Little. “There were about 1,000 pigeons and a few homeless people,” he explained. “The structure was empty and derelict. The developer who owned it at the time had gutted the two-story office building and kicked everyone out to turn it into a four to five story condo building, but that didn’t happen,” he noted. Noack Little bought the development shortly before it foreclosed and kept only its original structure. Everything else was completely renovated from the ground up. Among other additions the firm put in a roof deck, stairs, an elevator, windows and made it four stories on one side and three stories on the other with a basement. VETTAHOMES.COM 109

This redesign stemmed from the street to the building to the sky. “We added trees to the landscape and installed all the sidewalk,” said Little. The outdoor living space located on the rooftop features a lounge complete with a wet bar, refrigerator and game station. Tenants can relax and work on the building top where they have a view of the Capitol. This welcoming setting has been a popular spot for events of sorts, including engagement parties.

Sleek finishes, imaginative layouts and unexpected modern beauty define the workspace to maximize their signature ‘Return on Imagination’.

110 VETTAHOMES.COM

The process from acquisition to completion took about 18 months. “Our first big tenant signed on to fill the whole first floor before construction even began, and all of the others signed with us before the building was finished,” said Little. This is not typical of speculative commercial project buildings. “We got these kind of results here, because we were thinking of it from a tenant’s perspective on what we produced architecturally.” Working with a management group, Noack Little designs and leases spaces as part of a turn-key solution. “We’ve done this twice now,” noted the architect on the success of this type of design/real estate venture. “We want to replicate this business model more in the future. It works.” Tenants have a number of reasons to like their space at 1300 Guadalupe. The firm designed this entity with the idea that the modern day office space is not really just a place to work anymore, but more of a lifestyle. Here, tenants get an unregulated space to enhance their own culture, and a spot where they burn their own electricity. The building functions under Austin Energy 1-star (the lowest category), has low-VOC paints, proximity sensors for regulating air, low energy consumption light bulbs, low flow water for sinks and toilets and high efficiency air conditioning/heating systems. Compared to older, non-energy efficient buildings, bills at this greener location tend to be half the cost for a larger area of space.

”THE FIRM DESIGNED THIS ENTITY WITH THE IDEA THAT THE MODERN DAY OFFICE SPACE IS NOT REALLY JUST A PLACE TO WORK ANYMORE, BUT MORE OF A LIFESTYLE.”

A FORWARD THINKING, ECO-MINDED ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN FIRM, NOACK LITTLE IS ACTIVE IN SHAPING THE URBAN LANDSCAPE OF AUSTIN AND BEYOND.

112 VETTAHOMES.COM

The lot’s notable re-developmental designs won Noack Little an ABJ Real Estate Award for Design in 2012. “We are very proud of this award because it stems from the real estate sector not the design world… so realtors vote on this,” said Little. His firm originally thought the venue would attract Court House District types, but it has instead attracted an array of creative, software and design companies. “This neighborhood is having a little bit of a revitalization,” noted Little. The firm is currently working on another project just up the street on a building that suffered fire damage. Noack Little thrives on renovations. “I like renovation work a lot,” said Little. The architect asks questions when scoping out a space such as, “what is the building trying to do?” and, “what is the history if there is one?” to assess which direction to take a design. “I renovated a building that was in a fire, and the client wanted me to tear down a 100 x 100 foot space with no cones in it. I thought this was unique, so I went to the history center and discovered the space was made using original framework from Lamar street bridge. It had steel from an old WWII pontoon boat. I mentioned to the client and he changed his mind about tearing it down. We created a museum inside the office building, which ironically now functions as an architect firm,” he said. “We are always looking for what we can find in every building; every building has a story.” The firm tries to determine what the essence is

of the building and what it wants to do. The end goal is, “making [a space] successful for owneroccupiers,” noted Little. The ultimate highest use, however, is sustainability. Noack Little represents the only design firm in Austin invited to join One Global Design — a network of principal-led design firms around North America. This group of like-minded design firms meets twice a year to talk candidly and collaborate on just about everything. Noack Little was asked to join two years ago after collaborating with a Chicago-based group. Through this program, Little noted that his firm “can tap into the expertise of other firms at any moment.” Their primary goal is to take clients who are going global, but want to still use Noack Little for their expertise in a different state. “I can hire someone in the city they need construction,” said Little. This is an excellent resource for Noack Little as they do a lot of collaborations around the U.S. “I am learning a lot. We are better as a design firm because of this program.” A forward thinking, eco-minded architecture and design firm, Noack Little is active is shaping the urban landscape of Austin and beyond. The firm can help tenants save on bills and rent and attract more customers to their business through good design. This is an excellent firm for those thinking of upgrading their office space to a more design-conscious, lifestyle-driven entity to contact. (noacklittle.com) VH

FROM Green TO

High Performance BUILDING by coral talavera

T

he firm is proud to be a pioneering voice for environmentally responsive green building design and construction techniques. According to their team, understanding that a structure can be built with minimal impact on natural resources – without sacrificing beauty – supports a belief that one can live well while living green and have fun doing it! BPA practices Green By Design and they believe that 90% of effective green building decisions happen in the first 10% of the design process. For the firm, it’s of the utmost importance to implement regionally appropriate design decisions, rather than simply making sustainable material choices, to go beyond the present green building paradigm. Here’s what he had to share with us about his amazing high-performance movement… VH: WHAT DOES THE TERM “GREEN’ MEAN NOW? PF: “The former green building movement has devolved into a checklist approach to integrating various manufacturers’ “green” building products into our homes and buildings. What is still needed and yet to be fully appreciated by decision makers

VETTA HOMES SAT DOWN WITH THE AUTHORITY IN HIGH-PERFORMANCE BUILDING IN AUSTIN, OUR BELOVED – NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED – PETER PFEIFFER FROM BARLEY PFEIFFER ARCHITECTS IN WEST AUSTIN.

- are the benefits associated with an integrated and comprehensive PLANNING approach to building design and construction. The green building movement, despite the high hopes, has not promoted this to an extent some may have hoped it would. Many of our highly rated homes and buildings of recent years simply became a collection of poorly coordinated “green” features - the sum of whose benefits did not match the investment in the parts.” VH: WHAT ABOUT “SMART” GADGETS THAT PROMISE LOWER ENERGY USE AND BILLS? PF: “The crucial aspect in “High Performance” is in how pre-design project programming, design decisions and appropriate green building science interact with each other to effect health and comfort. When these details work together, IAQ (Indoor Air Quality), durability, energy efficiency and water conservation come naturally. The latest and greatest device can then be layered onto the design to compliment what is built-in. Remember, gizmos and gadgets are usually not cost effective nor have proven track records. They frequently require installation, maintenance & money to fix when they break.” VETTAHOMES.COM 117

No sports fan home would be complete without a man cave to lounge in.

VH: WHAT ARE SOME WAYS TO REDUCE ENERGY USE? PF: “What you want to ask is, “What will work with the least complexity?” If you are just starting your project, design for your climate and your site. That means in Austin, designing for our hot and humid climate. Climate sensitive design and simple “passive” strategies are still the best first-line strategies. It’s about relevance. It’s about relationships between what you build and its setting. It’s about programming & design. It’s about construction durability and systems approach. It is not about solar panels being tacked on top of an energy inefficient design!” VH: WHAT ARE SOME PASSIVE STRATEGIES TO INCORPORATE? PF: “Passive strategies are strategies that do not require work to make them operate. Having a home on an EastWest running street will generally allow for a more comfortable and reduced energy use because the windows will typically face away from the harsh Western summer sun. Lowering ceiling heights will reduce the volume of air to cool, dehumidify and heat. Having a light colored roof; or even better, a ventilated/ shading umbrella roof will make vast differences on energy consumption. This is an example of a “Passive Cooling” strategy. Some Passive Strategies can be retrofitted such as installing window 118 VETTAHOMES.COM

shading or awnings to reduce radiant heat that enters through windows and can cut air condition sizing by a third. Also, having lighter colored interior colors allows for reduced need of electricity and make for a comfortable living space. Lighter colored exteriors also reduce energy use by deflecting unwanted solar heat. We should be designing and building homes for longterm use and livability. This can easily be done through Programming, or critical question asking, the often-overlooked first step in the design process: “Problem seeking, before problem solving”. High Performance building boils down to reducing environmental impact by reducing consumption of energy, water and non-renewable materials while improving health through IAQ (Indoor Air Quality).”

“A HIGH PERFORMANCE HOME IS SIMPLY A HOME THAT IS WELL THOUGHTOUT, SMARTER, LASTS LONGER, IS HEALTHIER TO LIVE IN, LESS EXPENSIVE TO OWN AND OPERATE – AND ENHANCES YOUR LIFE!” – PETER PFEIFFER

The finished home on Zen Gardens Way, as seen this February in the Modern Homes Tours.

EFFICIENCY MADE REALITY

INTELLIGENT DESIGN IN STEINER RANCH

A

s recently featured in the Austin Modern Homes Tour, this home located on Zen Gardens Way has become a beacon of progressive efficiency. Built by none other than former professional baseball-playerturned-home-builder Kelly Wunsch, the house is not only a cool haven for relaxation; it’s also a monument to high-performance. After attending Texas A&M and later shining as a professional baseball player for 14 years with the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and the Milwaukee Brewers, Wunsch wanted to make his debut in the competitive architect-driven custom home building market. Perfectly aligned with Barley Pfeiffer’s innovative green design standards, he forged a construction company that is all about performance and sustainability. “Just like the prevailing opinion today that even luxury cars should still get good gas mileage, we believe that today’s luxury homes should perform more efficiently than ever before–without sacrificing comfort, utility, or aesthetics,” explains Wunsch. “Fortunately, building technology has advanced to the point

where not only is that goal possible, but we’re now able to accomplish it for virtually no extra cost,” he added. The Houston native has been building homes in West Central Austin since 2007 (and is also a licensed Realtor with a lifelong hands-on interest in design and construction). However, with this property he also wanted to demonstrate that incredible energy efficiency and healthy indoor air quality attributes could “live well” with soft contemporary styling in a high-end production-builder dominated neighborhood not known for any of this – Steiner Ranch. With this particular property, the homeowner set out to build a comfortable backdrop for them to raise their two sons while being a “lion in sheep’s clothing” that belies its high tech energy conservation features. These include a swimming pool that not only cools, but also heats the home and a special “shading umbrella” roof that was recently endorsed by Oakridge National Labs as one of the most significant advances in residential construction. The home sits at the edge of a ravine with great views that face to the southeast. The set was staged for the new home to be with perfect orientation for the Central Texas climate. fter being stripped to its bones, the Hill Country Apothecary has undergone a massive transformation, turning a lackluster space into something that looks more like a boutique hotel. Architect Matt Fajkus and his team were responsible for the renovation, which has been fed by the amazing energy of the community. Under the management of architect Ian Ellis and thanks to the design support of Garland Fielder, Thomas Johnston and Mitchell Peterson, this once-blah compounding pharmacy in Lakeway is now a monument to modern restoration. The general contractor for this project was Structura. The renovated space is full of unexpected elements with modern appeal, from the shower of minimalist light fixtures over the main service counter, to - what is perhaps our favorite part of the design - the oversized lettering defining the main entrance. “The supergraphic combines the pharmacy’s needs for clear and bold branding as well as ease of access to the products on display while modulating the daylight that enters the space. The supergraphic manages direct southern light, adequately and naturally lighting the pharmacy interior while protecting sensitive items on the shelves. The exterior hallway is designed to be lit over head by a routed soffit that continues the implied geometry of the supergraphic, folding down to create an anchor for the Apothecary as well as the shopping center, and linking indoor and outdoor functions,” explained Matt Fajkus. The MF Architecture team has done a great job of infusing the lot with tons of contemporary personality, without alienating the burgeoning Lakeway community.

The Apothecary includes a full-service retail pharmacy with products displayed on the steel, aluminum, and poplar wood supergraphic shelf that runs the full height and length of the glass storefront. Cost-effective, locally-sourced, and familiar Durcon countertops are installed throughout - the same material found in school laboratories and science classrooms across the country. Materiality and form are carefully composed to create an uplifting and efficient workplace for daily pharmacy functions that are transparent to customers. The space features a central compounding lab, which is glazed to allow for viewing of prescriptions as they are crafted by hand on-site. The lab is articulated as a discrete volume within the space, as the design team made way for chic leisurely areas where patrons can enjoy other amenities available at the facility, such as the in-store juice bar. “Hill Country Apothecary’s goal is to create a public gathering space both for the shopping center it’s located in as well as for its customers and the city of Lakeway,” explained Ian Ellis, project manager. Meanwhile, throughout the entire complex, “air and light quality were designed to take advantage of simple, sustainable and natural materials and geometries, resulting in clean spaces to serve and be served in,” added Ellis. Another way to incorporate the community was the reuse of the old drive-thru. The covered car lane is proposed to function as an outside seating area, providing shade, vegetation, a place to enjoy a drink, or meet casually with a pharmacist. Lastly, MF Architecture supported the new space by helping to rebrand the company. The firm designed the logo for Hill Country Apothecary and then collaborated with graphic design and production firm, Sturdy Mfg. Co., who reinforced the branding with handmade graphics on the interior walls, offsetting the minimal palette of poplar wood and neutral colors. The result is a multi-function space that not only allows the community to receive an essential service, but also serves up a massive dose of contemporary style. VH

BEAUTIFUL & RECLAIMED

S

alvaged materials, custom frames and industrial cool come together at Endever Furniture, an Austin based company (with a new showroom in Orlando, FL) that specializes in bespoke reclaimed wood furniture. Ranging from custom dining tables to reclaimed wood walls and even barnyard door fabrication, the Endever aesthetic has been described by owner Brian Ender as “edgy with a hint of rustic old world sophistication.” Their custom pieces, made in a variety of woods and metals – including eco-friendly products treated with water-based sealers – take around four weeks to make, to the specifications of each client. “As a furniture designer and craftsman, my goal is to work with 100% reclaimed materials as well as re-purposed and up-cycled products. Austin clients really enjoy my spin on modern rustic furniture,” added Ender. Meanwhile, their reclaimed wood walls and installations have been featured in homes that are furnished in a wide array of styles and the finished products are simply breathtaking. The Endever team is also skilled at building custom headboards, platform beds and our favorite, butcher block counters, full of rich color and grains. (endeverfurniture.com)

Chip and Joanna Gaines from Magnolia and the hit HGTV Show Fixer Upper.

TIMELESS RENOVATION IN WACO by lisa chappell miller

M

agnolia Homes in Waco, Texas has taken remodeling, repurposing and reinventing into the stratosphere! Chip and Joanna Gaines, the husband and wife team behind Magnolia Homes, started their business based on their strengths and goals. Both Baylor grads, Chip was successful in real estate and construction and Joanna, a busy mom, had the eye for design. Dozens of remodels, four children, a blog and one HGTV show later, Magnolia Homes specializes in residential and commercial remodeling, new construction, buying and selling of houses, realty, and the development of neighborhoods and communities. Whew, that’s a mouthful! The Gaines’ show, Fixer Upper, is in its second season on HGTV. At the conclusion of the 2015 season, they will have completed 23 home renovations in the Waco area, filmed for the hour-long show. However, their impact has gone much further than a fun, inspiring home improvement show. Renovating blighted homes in Waco is good for the economy and property values. In spring of 2015, Magnolia Market was completed on an abandoned 2.6-acres parcel of Waco land where a cottonseed mill once operated. The two 120 foot tall silos stand above the open-air market, office spaces, retail location and food truck court. The Gaines’ use of local craftspeople has helped several small businesses grow. Harp Designs, often featured on the show, builds beautiful furniture and architectural features from salvaged materials. Think, Play, Grow, a daycare specializing in nontraditional daycare for children birth – five years old now has an amazing childcare location in a beautiful, formally condemned American foursquare home renovated on the show. For those of us lucky enough to make the short trip to Waco, we can shop for items inspired by Joanna’s timeless style at her shop, Magnolia. (magnoliahomes.net) VH

TEXAS Revival by lisa chappell miller

D

riving on Highway 71 in Bee Caves, just minutes from Austin, you may have noticed the quirky, building with a parking lot full of cars and wondered what the commotion is all about. Excitement is in order, as inside Revival Texas is a magical mix of unique, repurposed antiques, architectural salvage, chic home decor, and a staff full of talented people to bring your vision to life. Oh, and in the outdoor courtyard / playground, next to the bar there is also a very friendly pet pig named Hamlet that will melt your heart! Revival Texas owners Tara and David Camp wanted a business that “provides unlimited access to inspired pieces and ideas that enable the creation of well designed and livable spaces.” They also love “cool stuff” and wanted to be surrounded by it every day. On my most recent trip, I wondered into a tent that contained the architectural remnants rescued from a recently remodeled 9,000 sqft mansion on Lake Austin. There were beautiful mantles, an entire staircase, hundreds of linear feet of moldings and trims and 60 solid oak doors, ready for your projects. This store has something for everyone, from succulent terrariums, root ball tables, cowhide chairs, antique lighting and grand double-entry doors to one-of-a-kind whimsical pieces that will make you smile every day.

Cowhides, reclaimed wood and charming antiques can be found at every corner at this unique Texas shop.

The biggest chapter in the Revival Texas story is about to begin in earnest. Revival Square, a boutique-style shopping experience, featuring owner-operated businesses, conscious consumables, & local services will be centered around a beautiful 1906 church that the Camps’ dismantled and moved to Texas from Ohio. Saving this amazing church from the landfill became a passion for the couple and with the help of Dick Clark Architecture and now the blessing of the city of Bee Caves, it is ready to be the cornerstone of a truly unique lifestyle shopping and entertainment destination. Young admits to thoroughly enjoying the thrill of new home construction.

VH: WHAT PROJECTS ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? VY: “We have many projects that cover a large portion of the State of Texas. It is located just 40 minutes northwest of Austin in Lago Vista.” VH: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE HOMES VICTORY CUSTOM HOMES HAS BUILT? WHY? SMARTER GREEN RESPECTING NATURE FOR A SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE

Sustainability is all the rage right now, so much so that it’s extending outdoors into our personal spaces. Xeriscaping and edible gardens are gracing front lawns of houses, making an environmentally conscientious first impression to guests and passer-bys. These trends have taken off in Austin due to dry local climate and residents’ obsession with healthy eating

by paige tyrrell

EDIBLE GARDENS Over half the population in the U.S. has an edible garden and people are proud to show it off. Since Austin is such a health and environmentally conscious city, using a garden to serve as sustenance and decoration seems like the perfect fit for this city. The edible trend monopolizes on the idea of using vegetable plants as decorations. Basil and rosemary form beautiful bushes. Add tomato plants for your own home grown caprese! Most front yard gardens have a mixture of plants and flowers to be more appealing. Edible plants typically require full sun and plenty of water so be sure to consider compatible growth factors when combining your plants. Water conserving, bucket style irrigation is easy to incorporate and nearly invisible when the plants mature. For your garden to blend more seamlessly into your yard, create an organic border instead of a hardscaped stark line. Marigolds, which look nice and attract insects beneficial to your plants, are a good choice. Herbs and flowering herbs can add an extra dimension that makes your garden look more appealing. Plants such as lavender add a nice color and smell. This bordering approach keeps the garden contained in a specific area so your yard doesn’t look like it’s overrun with plants.

XERISCAPING Xeriscaping is a gardening style that reduces, or even eliminates, the need for supplemental water from irrigation. Austin is frequently hit by draughts, which can ravage a yard leaving it barren and foreboding. Xeriscaping is the solution that uses plants that thrive in our dry climate to create an aesthetic yard. Xeriscaping your own yard requires a bit of research. When deciding where to put your plants (and which ones to use) look at your yard in terms of sun and shade. Common plants that do well in full sun areas are things such as: Live Oak, Crepe Myrtle, Bottlebrush, Black-Eyed Susan, and Lamb’s Ear. Plants that do better when partially shaded are Agave plants and bamboo, but because of is quick growing nature a little bamboo goes a long way! Xeriscaping can call to mind sparsely populated, completely tan yards, but quite a few colorful plants thrive here. The Purple Cornflower does well in both full-sun and part-shade environments and adds an eye-catching purple hue to any yard. If you like the idea of xeriscaping, but don’t want to fully commit, adding xeriscaped planters can be a beautiful way to add dimension to your yard or deck.

134 VETTAHOMES.COM

If you’re feeling extra trendy, you can mix these two methods by organizing edible garden plants into containers and place them on top of a rock xeriscaped yard! VH

he art of entertainment is enhanced with attractive elements of honeyed perfection. The continuing exploration of metallics is evident in two new basketweave colors introduced this season by Chilewich, one of our favorite design brands. The studio has created their own bi-color yarns, but this time combined both white and varying shades of gold and silver on each strand. The matte white lightens the metallics, making textiles look sundrenched and bleached. The imposing metallics herein are perfectly balanced by their white counterpart. BASIL

he quintessential herb of summer, basil adds its subtle magic to just about every kind of dish from appetizer to salad to dessert. A member of the mint family, basil brings a slightly sweet Mediterranean-inspired flavor to a range of dishes. Grow your own or pick some up at the local market and get cooking. Use fresh basil in tomato dishes, soups, salads, sauces, and pasta. Its flavor blends well with parsley, rosemary, oregano, thyme, and sage. (Expert tip: For the fullest flavor, add fresh basil to dishes within the last 5 or 10 minutes of cooking time). COUNTLESS HEALTH BENEFITS Not only yummy and fragrant, but incredibly healthy, basil leaves hold many notable plant-derived chemical compounds that are known to have disease preventing and health promoting properties. Every leaf contains several health benefiting essential oils that are known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Also, the herbs’ parts are low in calories and contain no cholesterol, but are a very rich source of many essential nutrients, minerals, and vitamins that are required for optimum health. Meanwhile, basil herb contains exceptionally high levels of beta-carotene, vitamin A, cryptoxanthin, lutein and zea-xanthin. These compounds help act as protective scavengers against oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species that play a role in aging and various disease processes. Additionally, the vitamin K in basil is essential for many coagulant factors in the blood and plays a vital role in the bone strengthening function by helping the mineralization process in the bones. Basil leaves are also an excellent source of iron. Meanwhile, basil tea (brewed basil-water) helps relieve nausea and is thought to have mild antiseptic functions. Lastly, holy basil “has been found to help detoxify the liver,” explained Elizabeth Trattner, an integrative health-care practitioner in Bay Harbor, Florida.

GROWING YOUR OWN Many of our readers grow basil at home (if you don’t, we bet after today you’ll consider it). Basil can be easily grown as a pot herb in the backyard. A woody, branching plant, basil is a warm-weather annual that grows very fast in 80-to-90 degree weather. When growing basil, note that two or three plants will yield plenty of fresh basil for a family of four — unless you plan to make pesto. (To make and freeze a winter’s supply of pesto, plant a dozen or more.) Many gardeners mix various types of basil in their flowerbeds, where it is ready for a quick harvest anytime. It is also great for containers. Basil needs 6 to 8 hours of sun; in the South and Southwest, it benefits from afternoon shade. Set out plants at least 2 weeks after the last frost in spring; summer planting is okay, too. Space at the distance recommended on the label, which is generally 12 to 18 inches apart. Plants are very frost sensitive, so keep plants protected in case of a late cold spell. Basil likes rich, moist, but well-drained soil with a pH of 6 to 7. Because basil is harvested continually for lots of leaves, it needs a little fertilizer. When planting, add plenty of organic nutrients from compost, blood meal, or cottonseed meal to the soil. Feed every couple of weeks to help keep tender new leaves coming on as you pinch back the stem tips. If planting in a container, use a large pot to keep the plants from drying out quickly in hot weather. You may also want to add a water-retaining polymer to the potting soil to keep the soil evenly moist and extend the time between waterings. You can dry basil leaves, but freezing it or using it in vinegar best preserves the herb’s flavor. You can also use it to flavor oils and pesto, which should be kept refrigerated or frozen. (Don’t keep fresh leaves in the refrigerator, though, as they will turn brown.) You can also keep cut stems fresh for a few days by putting the cut ends in water just like a cut flower. They will add a fresh basil fragrance to the air. VH

LOVE FOR THE HOME

Y

ears of magazine flipping, a formal design education at Texas State and a series of mundane desk jobs have led to the debut of Love Ding, a darling hidden gem on Manchaca Road. South Austinite and Texas State Interior Design graduate, Denise Roberts opened the studio last year after a career in model home design, to showcase her favorite finds in furniture, accessories and mid-century treasures. Inspired by the style of the ‘50s & ‘60s, the store brings to Austin a curated mix of quirky accessories that are wildly charming, as well as handmade paper goods from artisans in Austin and throughout the US. “I’m constantly in search of new ideas and inspiration that fuel my creativity, keeping my style trendy yet distinct,” added Roberts. Through their collection of delightful vintage trays, crisp seating and attractive objects, Love Ding has stolen the hearts of the VETTA HOMES team! (withlovefromding.com)
