A daring, audacious connoisseur of the world’s finest gemstones, Tiffany & Co. founder Charles Lewis Tiffany traveled to Europe throughout the 19th century to acquire caches of important diamonds and other gemstones. Most notably, in 1887, he purchased the French Crown Jewels. Shocking coups like these caused the American press to quickly dub him “The King of Diamonds.”

The Tiffany Diamond Mr. Tiffany understood that when a gemstone is absolutely superlative, it holds a powerful and mysterious allure that is irresistible. This was abundantly clear when in 1878 he introduced his famous canary yellow 128.54-carat Tiffany Diamond. The world had never seen anything this spectacular. Tiffany had set an unassailable standard of diamond excellence.
