t will be a bloomin’ good time at the Interior Provincial Exhibition and Stampede in Armstrong from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4. The 112th annual IPE is bound to get a lot more colourful with their floral division taking over the grounds with the theme “Come for a bloomin’ good time.” With some help from Communities in Bloom, the IPE will be blossoming in no time. This year, the IPE team will be bringing back some of your favourite activities, and they will be introducing a few new attractions as well. There’s still more than 220 vendors, 4-H demonstrations, West Coast Amusements, entertainment on the Kids World and Dodge Truck stages, and thousands upon thousands of people.

I

“We have great crowds,” said Bryan Burns, general manager of the IPE. “We’re the second biggest fair after the PNE in Vancouver.” Last year, the IPE attracted 159,000 people to the small community of Armstrong. This year should be no different, provided of course the weather holds out. “It’s been pretty bad this year, so I figure it’s gotta get good eventually,” said Burns. “The IPE is five days long, so we usually have one bad day,” he said, but that doesn’t seem to thin the crowds too much, especially for the out of town visitors. This is Burns’ fourth year organizing the IPE, and he says not only is it getting more comfortable, but it’s getting more exciting as well. “It always changes and it’s always different, but at least I know what’s coming up.”

And coming up this year is non-stop fun for the whole family. Activities ranging from amusement park rides, live concerts and entertainment, barn tours, baby animals, and with any luck, a live birth of a calf. “We even have llamas doing an obstacle demonstration this year,” said Burns. Also back for a second year is the Iron Chef competition which was introduced last year with grant money. “This year we decided to budget for it,” said Burns, adding that the event was popular, but he thinks they can do better this year. It also ties in well with the agricultural theme and initiatives like the 100 mile diet. The competition, featuring local chefs and local ingredients, will be running twice a day, with the finals on Sunday.

Diverse Crowd At IPE Continued from page 3 The turnout at the IPE is always strong and diverse, but an economic impact study conducted last year revealed some interesting and assuring information. “There are definitely tons of people who come every year, I think about 39 per cent (of attendees) have been coming for seven years or more, but the report showed that 12 per cent are first timers,” said Burns, pleased with the findings. There is something for everyone at the fair, and Burns works very hard to keep it that way. “We cater to such a diverse group,” said Burns. A few new performers will

be joining the IPE lineup including the Trials Stars, a trick bike riding duo from Vancouver. “They’re amazing riders,” said Burns. “They can do some truly amazing stuff.” As a community event, the IPE tries to give back to the community as much as possible. This year, Hospice House will be the recipient of the IPE’s generosity. The festivities will kick off Wednesday Aug. 31, when the lieutenant governor of B.C., Steven L. Point, comes to open the fair. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE On behalf of the Board of Directors, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 112th INTERIOR PROVINCIAL EXHIBITION AND STAMPEDE. As your summer begins to wind down, have no fear, as the Armstrong Fair is just getting ready to bring you the best excitement of the season. Renowned as one of the top Agricultural Fairs in Western Canada, our little city is transformed into bustling metropolis of Agricultural Awareness, Education and Fun!! This year the Interior Provincial Exhibition will be back for the 112th time. With Haystack saluting the Floral Division, we invite you for a “Come for a Blooming Good Time”. We strive to connect rural and urban communities with awareness of agriculture – because after all, if you eat, then you “need” agriculture, and you should “understand” how that food ends up on your table. Try your hand at milking a goat, or deciding which animal should win a ribbon in the various classes. Watch the display of busy bees, that are vital for pollination, and figure out a way that “you” can grow a bigger pumpkin, than this year’s winner!! Enjoy the displays of tractors and farming implements, as you marvel at the size of modern equipment. Thrill at the excitement of Calgary Stampede stock at the evening rodeo performances. You will enjoy one of the largest showcases of Agriculture in Western Canada. So come to Our Fair, a show for all ages. It’s a meeting place for old friends, and a place to meet new ones. It’s a place to relive the times of your youth, spent on the farm, and now it’s a place to share those memories with the grandchildren. We bring the world to Armstrong for 5 days of the year – be part of the excitement. I hope to see you at the Fair. Shirley Fowler President

his year, the Interior Provincial Exhibition is all about the kids, and the new Kids Klub will keep the youngsters busy for five days straight. And the more interactive the better. New this year, is a button machine where the kids can make their own buttons by colouring the IPE mascot Haystack. The largest group of people at the exhibition is always the kids says Bryan Burns, general manager of the IPE, adding that according to the economic impact report conducted last year, 40 per cent of attendees are under the age of 19. “It really is about the kids,” said Burns. This year, in addition to enjoying all the activities in the Kids World section, the kids can also sign up for the Kids Klub. Kids World, located behind the Hassen Arena, is full of activities and entertainment including the Kids World Stage, a petting zoo, and they will even have the chance to learn how to milk a goat. There will be a sign-up booth in the Kids World where children can sign up to be a member of the Kids Klub. If they do, they will get a prize pack that includes keepsakes and souvenirs. Members are also automatically entered into the zucchini derby or watermelon/corn eating contest. And if they visit daily, they can enter to win great prizes like ride bracelets, the opportunity to train with trick riders, or perform on stage with Shakewood Annie.

or those who may not be into rodeos, agricultural displays or amusement park rides, don’t worry, there’s still plenty to do at the Interior Provincial Exhibition. “Some people like to just come for the food, and sit and watch the entertainment all day,” said Bryan Burns, general manager of the IPE. Two stages will be running every day showcasing local and imported talent, including the Canadian Youth Talent Competition. The talent competition is a Canada-wide program that encourages young Canadians to develop and advance their performing arts talents. It also provides the venue, organization, and opportunity for them to demonstrate their performing arts talent in a competitive environment that encourages participation, evaluation, and learning experience. The winner will be headed to London, Ont. to compete in the national competition that features the winners from fairs all over the country. Last year’s winner, Aaron Gordon, will be opening for

the Youth Talent Competition every night on the Dodge Truck Stage. “So many people want to perform. Playing on stage is awesome for them,” said Burns, explaining that many local acts only get to play in pubs and other small venues. The diverse group of performers ranges from bluegrass to country to rock. There’s even a reggae band. “We’ve got some great talent this year.” The kids stage will be jam packed with performers all day as well. Little Rays Reptiles will be back, and the Puppet Tamer will be taking to the stage every day. For a more interactive experience the Kids World Stage will also be featuring a zucchini derby, a watermelon and a corn eating contest on Thursday. Kids get to put wheels on a zucchini and race it down a ramp. “It’s really fun to watch,” said Burns. Of course the entertainment doesn’t stop there. The rodeo seats about 5,000 people, and will feature the Crazy Cowgirls Trick Riders, as well as Trials Stars bikers.

hen the Interior Provincial Exhibition decided to go floral for its theme this year, who better to offer their help than Communities in Bloom. “It’s just a fun theme,” said Shirley Fowler, IPE president. Fowler is also the chairperson for the Armstrong committee for Communities in Bloom. “We thought it would tie in very well,” said Fowler of the decision to include Communities in Bloom this year. Nurseries and greenhouses from the area have been brought in to spruce the place up a bit. They have all been given a corner of the grounds to adopt and decorate with plant life. Organizers have also decided to do a fascinator day on Sunday, Sept. 4. For those of you who did not watch the royal wedding, a fascinator is a headpiece pinned to the hair, often made of lace, flowers and feathers, worn mostly by women on formal occasions. A make-your-own fascinator booth will be on site for those who want to participate in the theme. “We’re also encouraging women to bring one from home if they have it,” said Fowler. There have also been inquiries made as to whether the IPE will be able to set a Guiness Book world record for the largest number of people wearing a fascinator in one place. So help out the cause and bring a fascinator from home, or make one on site at the IPE.

et ready for the main event. The Interior Provincial Exhibition is once again featuring the Wrangler Tour Rodeo Finals. “The rodeo is always the biggest part of the fair. It’s a huge draw,” said Bryan Burns, general manager of the IPE. The best of the best come to compete in Armstrong. There are ten cowboys in each event, with the best coming back on Sunday for the finals. World-renowned announcer Randy Corley from Washington will be keeping everyone informed while Calgary-based rodeo clown Dennis Halstead keeps the crowd on the edge of their seats. “The cowboys love it, and the fans love it,” said Burns. Not only are the cowboys the best of the best, so are the animals. “We use the same stock as the Calgary Stampede,” said Burns. The rodeo and its crowd may not be as large as the Calgary Stampede, but Burns would argue that it’s better in certain ways.

G

“Our crowd is only 5,000 people, compared to Calgary’s 100,000, but I swear that we’re louder,” he said. Plus, the IPE is one of the only rodeos that runs at night, thanks in part to some major lighting upgrades last year. And the smaller crowd may work to the IPE’s favour. “At our rodeo you’re up close, you’re right in the action,” said Burns. “At the Calgary Stampede you can be sitting so far back you can barely see.” This year, the rodeo features upgraded spectator facilities including 100 per cent reserved seating, covered seating, and an expanded licensed area. And as usual the halftime entertainment is sure to thrill the audience. The Crazy Cowgirls Trick Riders, based out of Calgary, will be performing their thrilling stunts, and the West Coast Thunder drill team, from Langley, B.C., will also keep the crowd entertained in between events. There’s a limited number of seats available, so call the IPE office at 250-546-9406 to reserve tickets.

The rodeo isn’t the only place you will see cowboys doing their thing. There will be tons of competitions, such as wagon races, at the rodeo stadium, and the Dodge Truck Stage features many talented performers, like Jack Jackson (above), and plenty of country music.

Alberta Trick Riders Perform At Rodeo JESSICA SCHWITEK Morning Star Staff

hese cowgirls are crazy excited to be entertaining the crowd at the Interior Provincial Exhibition and Stampede. “It’s gymnastics on horseback,” said Cassie Horner of her trick riding duo, Crazy Cowgirls Trick Riders. Horner and her partner Shelby Cummings will have the rodeo-goers on the edge of their seat every night at the IPE stampede. Horner and Cummings have been riding together for a few years now, and are based out of Edmonton. Cummings, who splits her time between trick riding and hairdressing, also works as a stunt woman for several Canadian TV shows. “We’re so excited about it (the IPE). Everyone says that’s the rodeo to go to,” said Horner. The girls have played all over Western Canada, and have been featured in prestigious events such as the Calgary Stampede. “I grew up on a ranch,” said Horner, who is also an elementary school teacher.

“But I only started trick riding when I was 20.” Although a life-long rider, Horner went to a professional to learn how to do the tricks. “It can be pretty dangerous so you really need lessons from a professional trainer,” she said. Both girls have experienced injuries on a horse. “I tore a groin once, it still gives me grief sometimes. And Shelby was even knocked out once. She had to be taken out on a stretcher,” said Horner. The girls have also found a way to give back to the community while doing what they love to do. “We fundraise for the Children’s Wish Foundation,” said Horner. “We set up a merchandise booth, and 100 per cent of the proceeds go to the foundation,” said Horner. This charity was chosen specifically because both riders have had young relatives who have needed the special care provided by children’s hospitals. “I had a little cousin who was sick... and she has to deal with a lifelong illness. Shelby also had a little cousin who died of cerebral palsy,” said Horner.

Whenever they can, the girls also like to take make-a-wish kids and teach them how to ride. “It gives them a broader perspective about “western” culture,” said Horner. They will be performing the same duty at the IPE. One

of the days they will be taking two girls (contest winners), and teaching them how to be trick riders for a day. “We teach them how to ride and get them all dressed up. They sign some autographs and see what it’s like to be a star for the day,” said Horner. “It’s probably the most popular aspect of our show.”
