The Vernon Storm went 1-2 at the Shooting Stars Club Basketball Tournament last weekend in Calgary. In their opener, the Storm fell 58-55 to the Edmonton Grads in a back-and-forth game. Edmonton made a push to go ahead by 14 points early in the third quarter, but Vernon kept chipping away until they took a 55-51 lead with two minutes to go. The Grads then went on a 7-0 run to pull out the win. Top scorers were Emily Kanester (25 points) and Kailee Streichert (10 points), both of Vernon Secondary. The Storm rebounded by shading the Calgary Storm 53-52. Down by five at the break, Vernon rallied in the third with Brittney Walton canning a clutch threepointer to give the Storm a seven-point lead going into the final quarter. Calgary surged late to take a four-point lead with three minutes to go, but Streichert hit a jump shot from the corner with 15 seconds left to tie the game at 52-52. Kanester was then fouled collecting a defensive rebound and she went 1-for-2 on the charity stripe to ice the game. “This was a very exciting game to be a part of,” said Storm coach Bobby Mitchell. “Mental toughness was the key as we played at 8:30 a.m. after the late game the night before. We came out quite strong and used our press to create the tempo we wanted.” A trio of VSS Panthers led the attack – Bobbie Jones (13 points), Walton (11 points, four rebounds) and Kanester (11 points, five rebounds). The Storm bowed 76-46 to the Calgary Locomotives in their final game. Top scorers were Kanester (11 points) and Walton (10 points and four rebounds).

Bolts zap opposition The North Okanagan Sun Valley Source for Sports Lightning Bolts swept a pair of Novice lacrosse games last weekend. The Bolts opened with a 4-3 win over the Shuswap/Nicola on goals by Joseph Fidler, Michael Preston and Owen McKill and Lucas Dyck in support of a solid Ty Krause. Preston supplied 5+2 as the Bolts then outlasted Penticton 12-11 in a thriller. Brandon Dyck was great in net for the Bolts, who got exciting breakaway goals from Preston and Krause (2G). Singles went to Joseph Fidler, Lucas Dyck, Ethan Vryenhoek-Frank and Tyrel Gore, with the winner which bounced off the goalie's foot. Logan and Miller Nitchie each recorded an assist, while Owen McKill was stellar defensively. The Bolts play their last set of games this weekend in Merritt.
