ENJOY A BLUEBIRD DAY AT MOUNT SNOW Mount Snow is home to a few of the ski industry’s onlys and mosts. For instance, the Bluebird Express is North America’s only six-passenger bubble lift. Mount Snow’s snowmaking system is anchored by 253 high output fan guns, the most of any resort on the continent. Carinthia, the East’s number one terrain park, according to TransWORLD Snowboarding and SKI Magazine, is also the East’s only all-park mountain face, with eight different parks covering almost one hundred acres of terrain. All of this can be found at Vermont’s closest big mountain resort to where you live. How big? A total of 588 skiable acres spread across 80 trails on four different mountain faces. There is also an abundance of lodging and dining options located right on the resort including the Grand Summit Resort Hotel, Snow Lake Lodge, Harriman’s Farm to Table, 1900’ Burger and Station Tap Room. It’s all here, in the Green Mountain National Forest, close to home. Visit for information on deals, conditions and events.

Real Estate Market Assessment for the Mount Snow Valley The Mount Snow Valley (which includes Wilmington, Dover and surrounding towns) is economically anchored by Mount Snow, one of the 5 largest Ski Resorts east of the Rockies and is within a 4 hour drive of almost 30 million people. The Valley includes over 50 restaurants, more than 10,000 lodging beds (at a variety of Lodges, Country Inns, condos and vacation homes), a vibrant retail and service industry centered on the historic village of Wilmington and numerous attractions (golf courses, lakes, etc.) for the tourism based economy. As such, the local real estate industry is primarily based on the sale of vacation homes and condos, which comprise about 80% of the property tax base. As a vacation and resort market, we tend to lag national trends, which have greatly improved over the past year. Based on information from the Multiple Listing Service (NNEREN) for 2013 (through November), the Mount Snow market area has been more active with sales of houses and condos up by about 8%, although median sale prices are down slightly (1%). Land sales (less than 2 acres) have almost doubled over the prior year with the median sale price increase of more than 18%. Larger parcel (over 10 acres) sales have increased by over 40% with the median sale price increasing by more than 50%. Sale volume for the Mount Snow office of Vermont Country Properties Sotheby’s International Realty is up 28% and our market share has increased by 11%. The numbers show that our market, while slower to recover than the primary home market, is in transition and improving. However, the market absorption rate of current inventory for sale, which ranges from 2.3 years for homes and 1.2 years for condos to 4.6 years for land, suggests that it may take a bit more time to balance the needs of both sellers and buyers. The professionals at Vermont Country Properties Sotheby’s International Realty can help you navigate this changing market, whether you are thinking about buying or selling.

H.K. “Kit” Martin and Art Monette have been in the auction business together for over 40 years. Combined, they have many years of experience in liquidating estates and antiques. For the last 25 years the Townshend Auction Gallery has been in its present location on Route 30. Prior to that, back to 1970, Kit and Art ran auctions in the Old Newfane Barn near the Newfane Flea Market, just 3 miles from the present location. Kit and Art have always been interested in Antiques. Kit started in the business at 8 years old, obtained his auctioneer’s license, selling items at sales he would host at his family home in Newfane. Art’s grandmother was an old bottle collector and from a young age, Art would help her with flea market sales and was always an early bird at auctions, estate and tag sales.

Buyers of homes looking for furniture or decorative accessories to personalize their new place will have a lot of fun hunting for the perfect piece.

Townshend Auction Gallery will buy from one single item to broom cleaning entire estates. Not just limited to Vermont, they cover from Maine to Ohio. They can purchase outright or will take your items on consignment. Call them at 802-3654388 and ask if what you have qualifies for a free appraisal.

AREA ATHLETES’ HARD WORK PUTS THEM ON THE ROAD TO SOCHI As this publication was going to press the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics were just around the corner. The athletes were putting their game faces on and getting ready for competitions at the highest level. A seat on the Olympic team is a goal that most athletes have worked their whole lives to achieve. The Sochi Olympics were in early February, and athletes were selected in January. Coaches book plane tickets, schedule visa appointments, and determine where everyone will sleep in Sochi while the athletes train for and participate in their qualifying events. Within weeks of qualifying the athletes flew off to Russian to compete against the world’s best athletes. Mount Snow and Stratton Mountain have both been the training ground for many of the Olympic athletes. Slopestyle skiing, snowboardacross, snowboard halfpipe, Nordic and Paralympic are few of the events that may see representation from both Mount Snow and Stratton Mountain athletes. Some of the athletes qualifying for the Olympic team have grown up on the mountains of southern Vermont. many of them have attended Mount Snow Ski Academy, Stratton Mountain School, or the AbilitlyPLUS program at Mount Snow. All of them know about the great terrain that both mountains have to offer and many now call them home. That great terrain and training has helped hone their athletic abilities and led them to success on national and international stages. A. Not a thing, we still leap without looking. Opening a restaurant at age 25 and being new parents without a clue was the best experience we could have had.

You may have missed the small discreet sign on West Main Street across from the Norton House. But once you find this sweet little coffee shop you will glad you did and will be spreading the word as we have done.

Q. What is one of the greatest joys of operating Folly Foods? A. The people we have met. The trust they have bestowed upon us and the gifts they bring us. Perfect Peaches, tomatoes bursting with sun, fresh flowers, holly branches, just dug potatoes, herbs, kale, apples, Local Formage Blanc, the sweetest orange carrots I have ever experienced and the ability to trade coffee for cordwood. Now thats heaven.

We interviewed Peter and Kathleen Wallace, proprietors of Folly Foods Q- How was that you decided to express your creativity through food? A - I have always worked with my hands and find the rewards of being creative with food very satisfying. My blanket culinary statement is - if you like the restaurant business and it likes you - you are in trouble, because no other line of work will compare.

A - Oran Mor - which means “The Great Song” in Gaelic. Also was an incredible single malt scotch a Woman produced. A. Peter Wallace hails from Rutland, Vt. and his home Mt. was Killington. Kathleen is from Staten Island New York and learned how to ski at Crested Butte, Co.

A. Pedestrian-friendly vibrant downtown village with sidewalks, street lights and many independent shops, restaurants and gallery owners who can creatively express themselves through their businesses.

Q. Folly Foods is the third food operation you both have opened. What is the one thing you know now that you wish you had known when you opened Up For Breakfast in Manchester, your first?

A NEW (OLD!) RESTAURANT IN WEST DOVER! TC’s Restaurant has been a staple in the Mount Snow Valley for more than 35 years and is the home of Olympian snowboarder Kelly Clark. Recently, Terry and Cathy Clark sold the family business to their son, Tim and his wife Becky.  The Clarks are happy to keep the restaurant in the family and still showcase Kelly’s medals and memorabilia!   New owners Tim and Becky have revamped the interior and have a new, family friendly menu featuring flatbread pizzas, pastas, steaks and a great children’s menu.  And some things always stay the same in this familiar family run place -- the fish tanks, resident family dog and the vintage snowboards are still on display!  TC’s will be serving dinner every night through the ski season with lunch on Saturdays and Sundays.
