AsI turn the corner on five years with the VCDC, we also celebrate ten years of a successful Vermillion NOW! campaign. I notice the parallels in being a young father and husband for 10 years, with the growth of this city I love. Each new year brings inspiration to do better, whether in one’s personal or professional life. Likewise, our community continues to successfully plan for our common future, usher in new possibilities, and invest our time, energy, and resources to that end.
Like growing a city, it can be challenging to grow a family. To use a sports analogy, you go from ‘2 on 1’ with the first child, then to a ‘man to man’ defense with the second. BUT you have to strategize all over again once you move on to 3… then you’ve got to switch to ‘zone defense’!
In growing a community, that desire for growth can create insecurity over competition. If we capitalize on competition, however, we can spur unexpected achievements and innovation. Which in turn, can generate excitement. That excitement builds momentum. If we strategize intelligently, that momentum can break through any challenges we once faced, making them distant memories. Of course, if those memories become too distant, we risk forgetting what we’re capable of and understanding just how far we’ve come.
Vermillion faced the need to revitalize our downtown for a new generation of businesses, and went from less than 70% occupied to nearly full and
thriving! We’re facing our housing needs and have seen multiple new housing developments emerge, including Bliss Pointe. We faced the need to collaborate to more efficiently utilize our resources, which led to dynamic University-Community partnerships that are now standard practice. We continue to face our need for a diversified workforce, which has led to greater emphasis on entrepreneur support, specialized training in the trades, more robust internship programs, focus on energizing young professionals, with more solutions still emerging.
Like a growing family, Vermillion has seen amazing growth in the last decade, with expansions like those at Sanford Vermillion Hospital, McVicker Plaza, Polaris, First Dakota National Bank, Old Lumber Company, Masaba, Flexscreen South Dakota, the Vermillion Technology Center, and the Dakota Brick House. Vermillion welcomed Navigant Cymetrix and Biotest Pharmaceuticals, bringing important jobs in targeted industries. Our city continues to invest in needed amenities and crucial infrastructure updates that pave the way for Vermillion’s future.
I’m often asked “What’s the next development, Nate?” Or, “What’s the next big tourism event?” “What’s the Chamber working on?” or even – yes, “What’s next for you, Nate?” Excitement for progress sometimes brings with it the fear of change. That fear can motivate us, or slow us down. We need to keep our eyes, energy and action on further progress in Vermillion.
The final VCDC Business Luncheon of 2018 featured Brian Gramm, whose ‘Think Like a CFO’ presentation packed the house at RED Steakhouse on December 6th. Staff were there to support by handing out #LOVermillion beanies to visitors. KDLT was on hand to report the story of Vermillion’s community pride, and communitycentered promos included a City presentation of a check symbolizing support for the National Music Museum, an official proclamation naming February 10th #LOVermillion Day, and a rousing free-throw contest between President Gestring and the USD Athletics Director, Dave Herbster.
Vermillion’s 2018 annual Standstill Parade of Lights was another joyful success, with over twenty float entries and hundreds of attendees! On November 29th, the Vermillion Area Chamber & Development Company hosted this annual holiday event with the help of a huge number of individuals and organizations from around the community. Supporters included Vermillion Light & Power, Vermillion Street Department, Clay County Agricultural Fair Board, Jonathan Allender-Zivic, MECS Photography, VCDC Special Events Committee, and VCDC Ambassadors. 2018’s event was further supported by sponsors, including First Bank and Trust, Cortrust Bank, First Dakota Bank, Bank of the West, Sanford – Vermillion, Old Lumber Company, Prairie Eye Clinic, Biotest, and Edward Jones.
As always, awards were handed out for the top parade entrants, chosen by a panel of judges including Teramie Hill of Vermillion High School, Chad Passick of Vermillion Police Department, and Joseph Vogel of HyVee. This year’s winners were Biotest in 5th place, Vermillion Public Transit in 4th, Vermillion Farmer’s Market in 3rd place, Knutson Family Dentistry in 2nd, and Masaba in 1st. New this year was Crowd Favorite, chosen by community members weighing in via Facebook the following weekend, which also went to Masaba!
“the beautifully lit floats, live horses, choreographed dances, and toy giveaway created a magical atmosphere for a marvelous community. ”

Vermillion will play host to the 51st Special Olympics State Summer Games May 16-18, 2019.
The Special Olympics returns to its birthplace in Vermillion after 50 years west river. With many events scheduled, it is expected that over 580 athletes, 250 coaches, 500 games volunteers and 35 delegations will descend upon our community.
To kick-off this second half-century of Special Olympics South Dakota, the opening ceremony will take place on May 16th at 7pm. Saturday morning’s events will begin at 8am with volunteer registration, and athletic events will commence at 9am.
VCDC President and CEO, Nate Welch, is excited for Vermillion’s selection as host of the Summer Games for 2019 and 2020. The VCDC Sports Authority worked hard to craft the winning event bid, and the community is sure to benefit greatly from the presence of these games. “It’s no coincidence that 2019 will mark the 51st year of Special Olympics SD, and that SOSD started right here in Vermillion, in an office on USD’s campus,” shares Welch. “Our community is incredibly honored to have the start of the second half of a century of Special Olympics South Dakota back where it started. Like the track competition, Special Olympics will be making the turn toward another 50-year lap!”
Volunteers are needed for all three scheduled days of the event. Anyone 16 or older is invited to participate as a volunteer in a variety of capacities. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and a unique chance to work with athletes from across the state. Volunteers receive a commemorative t-shirt and a meal during the games. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Mike Bartos at Mike@ VermillionChamber.com.
Sponsorship opportunities also exist! All contributions are tax deductible. Contact the VCDC office at 605.624.5571 for more information about how to support this fantastic event. We can’t wait to show the state and our visiting athletes what a warm and welcoming community Vermillion is!
What are your names, and where are you from?
We are Tim Schreiner and Ruth Hamel. I was born in Aberdeen and Ruth is from Binghamton, NY. We met as journalists at the Argus Leader in Sioux Falls in 1979 and married in 1984 while working at USA Today in Washington, DC. Since then we’ve worked in San Francisco, outside New York City, Washington again and in Louisiana, where I taught at LSU.
How did you become familiar with vermillion?
I graduated from USD after coming back from Vietnam. I’ve returned many times over the years because I have friends and family that live here, in Vermillion. I brought Ruth here once to meet Doctor Farber, and a small reunion of my USD roommates brought us back to the community in the summer of 2017.
How has vermillion changed since you were here before?
The school – and town – has grown, especially with much more light industry. Downtown was vital during the 1970s when I attended the University, but after a challenging period in between, it is now thriving. USD is much bigger, both in terms of student numbers and physical size. The terrific culture and charming places that remain have been joined by better restaurants, world class museums and lots of great people.
What qualities do you see in vermillion that support the well-being of your family?
Number one was the proximity to nature and the Missouri River, along with the ability to jump on our bicycles and be downtown or on campus in five minutes. This is possible all in a place with a relatively low cost of living, and with bigger city amenities nearby in Sioux Falls and Sioux City. We “auditioned” several
cities, including Portland, Asheville, and Charleston before moving here, so we thought a lot about what we wanted.
what do you wish more people knew about vermillion?
Vermillion is full of talented people, great views of two rivers and Spirit Mound, wonderful history dating back to before Lewis and Clark, the treasured National Music Museum, and all of the culture that the University brings here. Most places, big or small, would be mighty envious if they experienced a free, regular community event like the phenomenal musicians that play every Friday night at Carey’s. It’s truly special.

Annual board elections for the Vermillion Area Chamber & Development Company resulted in three new faces being welcomed to the board for 2019:
I love the idea of getting more involved in Vermillion, and I’m excited to work with area leaders to grow our wonderful community. As a representative of the small business community in Vermillion, I would like to see increased opportunities for collaboration between not only small businesses, but also access to learn from those larger businesses around us. I look forward to working alongside other local partners as I continue to grow as a business owner and event planner.
My family and I recently moved to town and are excited to now call Vermillion home. I look forward to serving as USD’s representative on the board to help make Vermillion a better place to live, learn, and do business.
I have been a member of the Chamber of Commerce and this community for over 20 years. As a business owner in Vermillion and other communities, I feel I can give a unique perspective on the benefits of Vermillion. I am also a past president of the Vermillion Development Company. I am excited about the direction Vermillion is headed, and am looking forward to being involved again in helping to guide Vermillion through this growth.
As I step into the role of VCDC Board Chair, I would like to express how excited I am to see the strides that Vermillion is making every day to be the best community to live in and be a part of. Vermillion is an excellent and safe community to raise our families; it is a city of many fun, fulfilling opportunities, with superb educational systems. The attendance to our state’s flagship university, the University of South Dakota, continues to grow, producing some of the brightest talent in the nation. We want to encourage new graduates to stay with us in Vermillion, where future leaders can be engaged citizens and become part of the opportunities here in Southeast South Dakota.
The VCDC board is poised to elevate the conversation about continuing to promote sustainable growth for our community, addressing workforce needs and attracting target industries. I am proud to be a part of a community that brings together so much: arts & culture, amazing world-class education systems, amazing athletics, and beautiful scenery. I’m looking forward to sharing the sentiment #LOVermillion.
I love being a part of a growing community that brings together so many wonderful amenities. There are unending opportunities for community members, students and faculty to come together. We have something to accommodate everyone, from great retail shops, fine restaurants, and libraries, theaters, churches, parks, and outdoor public amenities. It’s becoming more and more true that ‘whatever you love, you’ll #LOVermillion’.
e believe that Vermillion is THE destination in South Dakota for opportunity, quality living, and great success. There are many reasons we believe this, but we think you should hear it from some folks who’ve invested themselves in our community over the years. We invited Kurt Hackemer, Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Farron Pratt, Vermillion Branch President of First Dakota National Bank, and Jim Peterson, President of Masaba Inc., to share their histories as Vermillion residents.
What brought you to Vermillion?
JP: A career opportunity presented itself. The desire to live and work in a smaller city was also something our family had been looking for.
FP: I initially moved here when I took a position with my employer, First Dakota National Bank. When I toured the community prior to making my decision, it looked like a great place for my wife and I to raise our family.
KH: My position with USD was my first job out of graduate school. I relocated here with my wife, Susan, and we’ve been living in Vermillion ever since.
What excites you most about being a part of this community?
JP: The people are very genuine. What excites me is the opportunity to have an impact on the community and make a difference for the better. There are opportunities available for those that want to take a leadership role within the community.
FP: I know that this community can get things done once they set their mind to it. This has been proven time and again with multiple projects.
KH: Vermillion is such a dynamic community, with many people from different backgrounds contributing to the success and growth that we’ve seen since moving here. I love those moments where different parts of Vermillion come together to do great and interesting things. For example, I always look forward to being a part of Vermillion Community Theatre’s summer production. For about two months, people from every walk of life in Vermillion come together to put on a great show.
Anything you especially look forward to being a part of, that you may not have yet been able to?
FP: I am looking forward to seeing the results of the Vermillion Now! 3 capital campaign! The first two campaigns were great success stories with the progress they have been able to bring to the community.
JP: I am looking forward to assisting in leading a successful Vermillion Now! 3 campaign and seeing how this campaign will be utilizing the funds for the betterment of the community through the VCDC. Raising money for the larger community is not something I have had the privilege of doing until now. Taking my experiences from Vermillion High School Veteran’s Field fundraising, I feel I may add value and experience to the community in a new and larger manner. I’m also excited about my work on the Vermillion School Board as we begin the implementation of the first phase of its strategic plan, pending my reelection.
KH: There’s no single thing that I feel like I’ve really missed, but there are lots of things that I feel like I’ve only sampled. In the school district alone, there are so many music, athletic and theatre events offered that I know I’m only getting a fraction of the experience.
Have your ideas of the community changed over time? And what changes have stuck most with you during your time here?
KH: I’ve always enjoyed being a part of the community, but I think it has become much more progressive and forward-thinking in recent years. We are now so much more intentional about planning for the future than
we were in the past. Having been in Vermillion for two decades, I’ve been around to see Vermillion shift and develop into a community that has something for everyone. I am particularly amazed by our historic downtown. Main Street is so much more alive now than it was when we moved here. It’s great to go downtown almost any night of the week and see parking spots full and people enjoying themselves. The people who live here can certainly appreciate the closeness of the amenities, activities, and avenues of involvement that we’ve seen since the seeming ‘rebirth’ of our downtown.
JP: As I have gotten more involved in the community, I have seen better collaboration between the city, the University and the community. I have experienced firsthand the results of this cooperation for the advancement of the community – investment in McVicker Plaza, the expansion of the National Music Museum, the Vermillion Technology Center, and successful business recruitment.
FP: I feel that Vermillion has become much more progressive. Vermillion really has a great vibe going on that people around the state have taken notice and see that we have some great energy and progressive things happening in our community. As part of that progressive attitude, I feel the University and the City have worked together more diligently than ever to make Vermillion a great place to be for the students as well as the citizens of Vermillion.
and university athletics, from biking and hiking trails to cultural activities. Our diversity of restaurants are first rate and attract people from the tri-state area. The University offers many opportunities and programs you would not typically find in communities of our size. Vermillion is a great place to raise a family and have a successful career.
KH: I think people outside of Vermillion underestimate the breadth and depth of our arts, culture and theater scene. Between the community and USD, there are so many opportunities here. You can come into town, enjoy a good meal at any number of places, and attend a memorable event down the street. From an outsider’s perspective, Vermillion seems like a quiet, slowmoving town, but in reality, there is always something happening.
FP: I wish they could experience how great a small and large community Vermillion is. In reality, we are a smaller community, but we have many amenities that larger communities have. I wish they could experience it for themselves!
How do you envision Vermillion growing/evolving in years to come?
KH: A recurring conversation that I have with students is that they feel they can’t stay in Vermillion because they feel like they won’t be able to find a job supported by their earned degree. There are certain areas that we could continue to develop economically, so that those students who are graduating with specialties in particular areas could stay in Vermillion. Vermillion has created a great base for the future, and I think we are well-positioned to add light manufacturing, medical science, or knowledge-based businesses. I think we also have a sense of what it takes to add affordable housing to support this kind of growth, which makes me optimistic about what might be accomplished.
JP: Vermillion will grow with continued investment in housing, and in seeing existing businesses expand while recruiting new businesses that will support family wage jobs, and in working with the community to train and educate workers for the future.
What do you wish people outside Vermillion knew about us?
JP: Vermillion is a vibrant and special place due to the relationship of the city, community and University. Vermillion has first rate schools with many activities for students. There is plenty to do depending on your interests: from outdoor sports and hunting, to school
FP: I see Vermillion continuing to grow incrementally over time. I feel the University will continue to be a big part of the community, but complementing that will be our continued growth in the economic development sector.
