BY ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON ADAPTED FOR THE STAGE BY NICK LANE Doctor Henry Jekyll is a good man. Successful within his field and respected by his peers, he’s close to a neurological discovery that will change the face of medical science forever. However, his methods are less than ethical, and when a close friend and colleague threatens to expose and destroy his work, Jekyll is forced to experiment on himself, whereupon something goes very wrong…or very right. And suddenly Jekyll has a new friend, the brutal Edward Hyde. A thrilling adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s dark psychological fantasy, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde immerses you in the myth and mystery of 19th century London’s fog-bound streets where love, betrayal and murder lurk at every chilling twist and turn. Puccini Ebrill 18 & 20 April 7.15pm Floria Tosca may have many admirers but she only has eyes for one man, the painter Cavaradossi. But the malevolent Chief of Police, Scarpia, has other ideas and wants her for himself. As he schemes to trick the lovers and get what he wants, dramatic and tragic events unfold, leaving Tosca standing alone clutching a dagger in her bloodstained hands, and with a shocking final twist to follow. The turbulent backdrop of Rome during the Napoleonic invasion is an apt setting for this thrilling story of love, lust, loyalty and corruption. Puccini characterises the drama through his exquisite melodies and orchestration, and fabulous arias that have made Tosca one of the best-loved operas in the world. La forza del destino

Don Giovanni

Ebrill 21 April 6.30pm

Ebrill 17 & 19 April 7pm

The rebel Don Alvaro and the aristocratic Leonora plan to elope, but when her father is killed by a stray bullet from Alvaro’s gun, it triggers an inescapable chain of events. Forced to flee as they are pursued by her brother, who has sworn vengeance, the characters are thrown together and torn apart in a series of coincidental meetings. The implacably serious characters are offset by the lighthearted, careless Preziosilla who provides a constant reminder that the force of destiny really is unstoppable.

The arrogant and charismatic Don Giovanni seduces his way around Europe, taking what he wants and living for lust, without conscience. When one of his conquests ends in murder, it looks like his luck is about to turn. He finds himself on the run, pursued by disgruntled exlovers, fiancées and a force from beyond the grave. But when he refuses to show remorse, vengeance is inevitable and leads to his ultimate demise.

Verdi

Verdi’s epic opera is told through a rousing score that includes the instantlyfamiliar Overture popularised through its use in classic film scores and advertisements. This new production – directed by WNO Artistic Director, David Pountney, and conducted by WNO Conductor Laureate Carlo Rizzi – marks the beginning of a three year partnership with Theater Bonn to bring new productions of some of Verdi’s greatest operas to the stage. Sung in Italian, with English and Welsh surtitles Verdi Trilogy Patron: His Excellency The Italian Ambassador, Mr Pasquale Terracciano

Mozart

Based on the legend of Don Juan, Welsh National Opera’s production is set during the Spanish Golden Age. Mozart reflects both comedy and tragedy brilliantly in the score, including the ‘Catalogue’ aria detailing Giovanni’s list of 2065 lovers, the sparkling ‘Champagne’ aria and the high drama of the heart-stopping finale. Sung in Italian, with English and Welsh surtitles

Ensemble Cymru: Uchafbwynt Taith Ben-blwydd 10 / 11/ 12 Mai 2018 10am AMSER NEWYDD Tocynnau: £12 / £5

After 15 years of music-making, our expanded ensemble enables an arresting programme for May 2018 that is truly diverse in both time and place. From Wales, we are absolutely thrilled to perform works by two living Welsh composers: a brand new commission from Gareth Glyn, as well as Emerging (lightly) by Aberdyfi-based Rhian Samuel. From the 20th century is the rarely-performed gem, Nonet, by England’s great Arnold Bax, alongside Debussy’s Dances for Harp and String Quintet, conceived as a harp ‘showcase’. Going right back to 1738, Handel’s remarkable Harp Concerto Op. 4, No. 6 draws on nearly all our varied instrumental forces for this exciting season.

Ar ôl 15 mlynedd o greu cerddoriaeth, mae ein ensemble mwy o faint yn galluogi rhaglen drawiadol ar gyfer mis Mai 2018 sy’n wirioneddol amrywiol o ran amser a lleoliad. O Gymru, mae’n bleser mawr gennym berfformio gweithiau gan ddau gyfansoddwr byw: comisiwn newydd sbon gan Gareth Glyn, ac Emerging (lightly) gan Rhian Samuel o Aberdyfi. Hey people! It’s Tim Vine back on tour, telling lots of silly new jokes, showing off new homemade props and singing some new daft ditties. The following subjects will be touched upon briefly: pixie football, ice cream and nibble feeders. Come along, sit down, and laugh. The quantity won’t let up. This is comedy without a message. What an odd person. What a lot of nonsense. What else is he going to do? ‘Sunsets are in the sky, milk’s nice, and I’m an idiot.’

I originally intended to call the show, “I’ll Millennial You in a Minute”, but my promoter considered the title, “off-puttingly baffling”. Is life that bad or have we good reason to complain about it? Are we filled with righteous anger at a world gone wrong or are we all just a bunch of whiny little brats? In short, are we spoiled? Come and watch as Byrne takes this question, turns it upside down and shakes it until the funny falls out.

SWAN LAKE - Presented by VIENNA FESTIVAL BALLET Dydd Mercher/Wednesday, 23.05.18

£23 Conductor Tomáš Hanus | Soloist Peter Donohoe (Piano) Prokofiev Cinderella, Suite No 1 from the Ballet Grieg Piano Concerto Beethoven Symphony No 7 Prokofiev’s colourful ballet score, Cinderella, is chock full of witty, vibrant music, by turns spiky and lushly romantic. The Quarrel of the Ugly Sisters, Cinderella’s Waltz and the memorable Midnight Hour are among the Suite’s highlights. No less richly melodic is Grieg’s evergreen Piano Concerto, renowned for its explosive opening bars and its tender lyricism. By contrast, Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony hurtles along with boundless energy.

£21 Music by Tchaikovsky One of the best known love stories, performed by the ever popular Vienna Festival Ballet. Lavish costumes, stunning scenery, international stars, and the glorious music from Tchaikovsky make this a night not to be missed. Swan Lake is the most popular ballet in the world. It’s the ballet that captures like no other the full range of human emotions - from hope to despair, from terror to tenderness, from melancholy to ecstasy. Don’t miss this magical evening.

THREE BROKEN HEARTS, ONE SOHO HANG-OUT, AND THE ONLY MAN WHO COULD EVER HELP THEM... Welcome to the Preacher Man, the swinging Soho joint where the kids used to dance the night away and dared to dream of love, while the legendary owner, The Preacher Man himself, dispensed advice to cure the loneliest of hearts. Only, that was a long time ago and all that remains are the memories, the stories and the myths. Until now, that is, as three random strangers, generations apart but all in need of help with their hopeless love lives, are inexplicably drawn to the site of the original venue. Starring recording artist Michelle Gayle (Wolfblood, EastEnders, Beauty and the Beast - West End), and Alice Barlow (Hollyoaks, Drifters) and directed and choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood, Son of a Preacher Man is the sparklingly funny and sweetly touching new musical by internationally-renowned writer Warner Brown, featuring the greatest hits of Dusty Springfield.

20TH CENTURY BOY – THE SMASH HIT MARC BOLAN MUSICAL 40TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR, 2018 This hit musical, inspired by the life of rock legend Marc Bolan, returns to the stage to mark the 40th anniversary of the iconic star’s untimely death. Featuring some of the greatest rock songs ever written, 20th Century Boy tells the life story of the legendary Bolan and his band T. Rex. This show exposes some of the myths and takes the audience on a tearful yet feel-good journey through Marc’s fascinating life, cut short by a cruel twist of fate. At his peak, Bolan was arguably the biggest rock star the UK had ever seen. Rocker, poet, electric warrior, king of glam and godfather of punk – Marc Bolan became a superstar and the press dubbed him “Bigger than the Beatles”. Before his tragic death in 1977, a few days short of his 30th birthday, Bolan lived life at breakneck speed, creating a series of iconic images, a string of number one hits and an army of obsessive fans. 20th Century Boy is a glorious celebration of glam rock at its colourful best!
