WONDERFUL: It all happens at once. Not that I'm complaining it's all good! In January we attended the 'Keeping It Live' Showcase at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, It was a four day event and we placed three excellent attractions on the bill. One of the Artistes was the crazy comedy lunatic known as 'It's Bizzare' (spelling is correct), who took the show by storm and became the most talked about act in the entertainment industry the total insanity of his exceptionally well-put-together show was so popular that telephones began ringing in his favour around the British Isles. Since then he has been signed for a comedy cruise, many cabaret appearances throughout the UK., and to our delight, not one, but two, television companies have expressed a deep interest in showcasing him in pilot format, with the possibility of a series. It's just a matter of time before he makes it big. All three Artistes had good reviews and have gained work nationally after being part of the 'Keeping It Live' show after all, that's why we showcase the entertainers but the success of 'It's Bizzare' has been nothing short of meteoric. It's good to be able to report that our managed artistes are meeting with such great success. The Summer Season is almost upon us and it looks like another busy year for everyone at Noel Gee Associates. After the summer we have quite an amazing Autumn planned with some major events that you'll be hearing all about. It looks as though myself and my co-writer have stumbled into success with our comedy scripts for television, so that's a 'watch this space'! and I've been delighted at your response to this edition of VENUE Magazine I'm really grateful that it's so popular - full colour this time! Isn't Facebook a remarkable phenomena? I've never been on it even though there is a 'Noel Gee' facebook site, I've never even seen it! but I get to know what's being said because people talk about it as though it was a bad soap opera. I find it funny and I'm amazed that people have the time to devote to writing trivia. There is one vocalist who regularly writes really bad things about the venues that he works at, what a shock it'll be to him when he finds himself without work! I'm told that there's a current row going on on facebook between a male singer and a female singer who were once a couple - they obviously feel the need to make their dirty laundry a matter of public interest. Why do people do it? If anyone makes derogatory comments on facebook, it's not long before the insulted party gets to know maybe that's the intention. Like emails and texting it does show who did rather badly grammatically at school. However, the facebook site owners have become exceedingly rich and it's become one of the internet highest rating sites. There is some terrific entertainment at the social clubs, theatres and holiday parks in the region and I look forward to seeing you out and about enjoying some fine attractions throughout the year. Noel

Thanks to all those people who take the time to write to us wishing us well with the publication. Letters on various subjects, and in response to articles may be printed at the discretion of the publishers.

SCENE AROUND: Grantham Railway Club Charity and Audition Night On 3rd March we were invited once again to organise a charity event in aid of the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. Owing to the backlog of artistes waiting to audition it was decided to invite a few of them to perform. The evening was compared by Noel Gee himself who got the night of to a fantastic start singing a few songs and creating a great atmosphere for some nervous auditionees. Sheryl Ryan was the first of three solo girls to take to the very crowded stage. Sheryl was very smartly dressed and showed great confidence performing a good range of songs and rousing the crowd with her rendition of Poker Face the popular Lady Gaga song. Next into the limelight was a young girl by the name of Rodeo Jo. Jo is relatively new to the scene and sang a selection of country songs both old and new. She has a nice voice and with a bit more stage experience should do well in the future. The third girl to appear on the night was Carly Jayne. Looking resplendent in one of nicest dresses I have seen at an audition for ages she came across very confident but suffered a little with sound problems.

Sheryl Ryan To close the first half of the show was one of our more established acts Daniel Craig. It has been a long time since I saw a young fifteen year old bag of nerves at his first audition! Four years down the line Daniel is now full of confidence with his singing, keyboard playing and audience interaction and it is understandable why he has become a favourite on the east coast. An apprenticeship well served!

Daniel Craig With Noel & Marilyn

After the break for a raffle and speeches from the beneficiaries from the air ambulance the entertainment resumed. A young man from Sleaford was the next new act to perform. Paul Mitchell is another act full of potential. He has a good voice and a nice personality if a little shy on stage. He sang a good mixture of songs range from soul and motown to the inevitable Sex On Fire and again with more experience should become a regular face in the future.

6

Soopadoopa are three larger than life girls in more ways than one! Combining some great eighties hits with choreographed dance routines and a laser lightshow the girls rounded of a very successful audition session. To bring the evening to a close former BC Sweet frontman Kriz blasted on to the stage. Always a favourite at the club with his Platform One show, Kriz soon had the dance floor full. Another charity night is planned at the club on October 6th.

EAST MIDLANDS GALA COMMAND SHOW 2009: Friday 19th October saw the third annual East Midlands Gala Command show. Hosted this year by Fantasy Island, Ingoldmells the event proved to be bigger than ever. Readers of Venue Magazine voted for their favourite acts seen around the midlands area in nine separate categories. A full room was present to see house band Regency open the show. Compere for the evening was the hilarious Steff Micheals a favourite at the venue who held the show together well. The Fantasy Island Show team gave the evening a Las Vegas feel with some terrific dancing before the presentation of the first award. The category of Best Male Vocalist is always well contested and this year was deservedly won by Chris Bateman who received his award from Marcus Collingbourne (Keeping It Live!). Another tough category is that of Best Female Vocalist. This year readers voted for Jaqui. Being relatively new to the business this is a fantastic achievement for her. It was very nice to see some previous winners in the audience giving their support to the event. Last years Best Country Act Carolyn was there to see the latest winner Christine Lee Jones to collect her award. Having only moved to the county CHRIS BATEMAN from Wales earlier this year, Christine quickly became a favourite on the east coast. Brotherhood are an extremely busy and hugely popular duo so it was no surprise to hear that they had won this category. The boys are so busy in fact that they were not able to attend and collect their award. Noel Gee collected the trophy on their behalf. Next up was the award for Best Comedy Attraction. Stuart Eden is another hugely popular act around the east midlands with both his stand up routine and alter ego drag queen Sabella. CHRISTINE LEE JONES Stuart gave a fine performance on the night leaving the audience rolling with laughter. In these days of entertainment cut backs it is rare to see a good band. Three Parts Cut are just that! A top quality authentic rock n roll band worthy of the Best Band award. They received their award from Noel Gee following a great live performance.

STUART EDEN

The Amanda award is now in it’s second year and is presented to female artists who have in our view worked extra hard to raise their performance above others. This year the fabulous VBurlesque collected the trophy from Marilyn Utting. The girls have put a lot of time and effort to bring the show together in such

A short time. The category of Best Speciality Act covers a wide range of artists but this years readers choice was Martyn James & Company. Martyn is a terrific illusionist with an infectious personality and showed us all on the night why he received so many votes. To be voted for an award is an achievement for any act but to be voted twice is amazing. For the second year running UK Chicago Blues emerged as the east midlands Best Tribute Act. Steve and Alan are one on the hardest working acts around and this award shows that it has really paid off. Another Fantasy Island favourite Nathan Moore of Brother Beyond fame was this years Big Name Act winner. Nathan was unable to collect his award due to work commitments but Marcus Collingbourne collected it on his behalf.

Phil Trevethick

A fantastic evening was brought to a close by Trilogy who gave a fine performance filling the dance floor. A big thanks you to Fantasy Island for their help in staging what has now become a prestigious event on the entertainment calender. Details of next years show can be found later in this issue.

Forty-odd years on and you can still remember the following line of the song? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

I saw her today, I saw her face … Birds sing out of tune and rain clouds hide the moon … I woke up this morning feeling fine, had something special on my mind … You think you've lost your love, well I saw her yesterday, it's you she's thinking of … You never close your eyes anymore when I kiss your lips … Sunshine came softly through my window today, I could have tripped out easy … In the chilly hours and minutes of uncertainty I long to be …

8. You live in a fancy apartment off the boulevard St. Michelle ... 9. In the year twenty-five twenty-five if man is still alive … 10. Put my gun down the war is won, file my pass out the time has come …

DINING OUT: There is nothing more enjoyable on a Sunday than setting off for a pleasant drive through our lovely countryside and ending up at one of our picturesque country pubs for a lunch. We broke with tradition this time and headed off on a particularly nice Thursday and ended up at the Blue Bell in Tattershall Thorpe, a listed building that dates back to the 12th century. Because of the age of the building and the low beams, it is as well to note that taller members of the party should take care, but that is the only word of caution I would advise. We were very hungry by the time we arrived and bravely decided to order starters, two of us having the combo platter, the others having the soup and the pate. All the starters were very enjoyable, although the size of the combo platter was so generous, I'm sure it would have done all four of us!! For main courses, the ladies decided on the speciality of the house, the Lamb Henry, which came with a very tasty gravy, and wonders of all wonders in this day and age, home made chips!! The gents plumped for fish and chips, with again the wonderful home made chips, and a batter that impressed. The portions are especially generous, and we all struggled to empty our plates, and I'm quite sure we should have walked home after that instead of driving, but at a rough cost of ÂŁ12 a head for our meal, we left with a very satisfied feeling. It's also worth noting the memorabilia on the walls, as the Blue Bell is very near the village of Coningsby, and during the war RAF Woodhall Spa, and was well frequented by the aircrew. Remember to note the signatures on the ceiling, and the propeller outside! All in all, the Blue Bell is a hidden gem, and as one of our more unusual buildings is well worth a visit. The road is the B1192, and can be found either from Woodhall Spa or Coningsby/Tattershall, on the way to Skegness on the A153

MOIRA’S MOAN: I don't really like to moan when the weather starts getting better, because after the winter we have had, we should all be looking forward to spring. However even though I don't like to, I'm sure I will manage beautifully. In fact if you listen to my husband, he will tell you it comes naturally to me. At the moment and for the next year and a bit, I will be helping our daughter and her fiancÊ plan their wedding. Now this is a very exciting time, made into a stressful time by the ludicrous ideas that these wedding magazines put into the mix. A lot of the ideas are very helpful, but the big thing of the moment is Chinese lanterns. I don't know if you have seen these things, the idea is that you set them alight and send them up into the night sky. On paper and on television they look lovely and romantic, but let's just think about the logistics for a second. Obviously you can't let them off until after dark or the effect is ruined. So you have the wedding guests trooping outside (we are talking November here, it's not going to be warm). By this time in the proceedings at any good wedding alcohol has been consumed, and you are letting them loose with naked flames. I question the wisdom myself, as at any family wedding I have been to the dancing is slightly hazardous by that time of night, never mind a health and safety nightmare like this. Okay, assuming the guests are still capable of lighting the lantern without incurring third degree burns, they then have to hold on to them until the right time, because if you let go too early they don't go into the sky but float along the ground setting fire to bushes, shrubs and the neighbourhood cats. I am not anxious to have the wedding interrupted by the fire brigade, and I'm quite fond of my family. The groom's family are also nice people so I would like them to see the wedding out without serious injury. The concerns I have are not only mine however, as I caught a news item a few days ago reporting how many false alarms the Coastguards have had to respond to this year all caused by these idiotic things. The figure was upwards of 300, as on their way back down to earth (or sea as the case may be) they are almost indistinguishable from a distress flare. The bottom line is that something that starts off as a lovely gesture on a wonderful day could end up as a serious incident somewhere miles away. I don't want to spoil anybody's fun, but common sense should really prevail. Needless to say we will not be having these, and I don't think the day will be any the worse for it. DEAR VENUE:

Letters To The Editor

Dear Venue Are you having the regular talent awards this year, and where can I get my voting slip? Last year nobody wanted to deface their copy of the magazine, so I just had to write on a piece of paper and I don't know if my votes counted. I like the idea of having the acts recognised for the entertainment value, and after a good night our club often want to say we have enjoyed it, so how can we all do that? Do you count the votes if they are not on an official slip. R Watson You will be pleased to hear that we welcome all votes and we understand that you don't want to tear your magazine up. It's something we have given a lot of thought to at the magazine and we have put the voting slips online so that you can have your say, because after all these are the awards voted for by the people who watch the acts, and who knows better? The slips can be obtained from www.noelgee.co.uk, as can the rest of the magazine, so if you loose your copy and want to find out who is appearing in your local area check out the website! Dear Venue We were at the Big Top for the Tribute to Amanda and enjoyed the whole show. The night was a reminder to everyone how much missed Amanda is. We all hope there was plenty of money raised for charity and think the acts did a real good job. M Raithby Dear Venue I see Blockbuster Audio advertised in the Venue often and I was wondering if it was open for members of the public or is it just for professional acts. Us amateurs like to have a go sometimes, even if just for our own amusement, but there aren't many facilities around who'll record Karaoke singers. L Emerson Please don't hesitate to contact Blockbuster Studios or any of our advertisers if you have any queries, they will be happy to answer your questions. I do happen to know that Blockbuster in particular welcome members of the public and are very willing to give advice and the benefit of their experience to anyone who wants to give it a go.

SOAPBOX: Here we go again! Another summer season gets under way. As I sit here and write this column the sun is shining outside giving the promise of more great weather to come. From the reports I have heard the East coast had it’s best season for many years and this year promises to be even better. With the value of the Euro plunging ever deeper the idea of a British holiday seems more inviting each year, if only the sun would keep shining! If you are reading this magazine you are probably a frequent visitor to one of the many live entertainment venues around the midlands (or you are visiting the dentist or doctors in which case you have my sympathy!). I would like to thank you on behalf of both the venues and entertainers for your support during these challenging times. Without your patronage there would be no work for the many vocalists, comedians, duos, bands and Dj’s that rely on the income from these gigs. Like many artistes I used to complain about sitting through another game of Bingo or Sticky Thirteen while waiting to perform my first spot. I now realise that venues are having to use any means possible to get customers through the doors and a full room for Bingo is a bigger audience for me. I must be mellowing in my old age! Get me a book of six and pass my dobber! I would like to wish my old mates The Glitter Band luck for their forthcoming mini tour with Angela Bowie. The band have struggled to get work lately owing to their past connection to a certain “Leader”. These lads are a great band in their own right and had numerous hits of their own. I fail to see how we can forget a stack of era defining music because of the failings of one man. I’m sure that the passing time will allow these great songs to be heard once more. After all didn’t Jerry Lee Lewis get barred from entering the UK after marrying his thirteen year old cousin? I never get asked to stop singing Great Balls Of Fire! Kriz

The East Midlands Gala Command Show 2010: If you draw a circle on a map with the centre at Gainsborough and the radius covering fifty miles, you'll find the following places within the circle; Lincoln, Scunthorpe, Newark, Nottingham, Retford, Worksop, Chesterfield, Rotherham, Doncaster, and lots of other places too. Just outside the circle, but within striking distance are Skegness 57 miles, Ilkeston 58 miles, Leicester 74 miles, Derby 68 miles, which goes to show why Gainsborough Blues Club Gainsborough Trinity Football Supporters Club, is geographically ideal to host the East Midlands Gala Command Show 2010. Having held showcases at the venue, and regularly staging major attractions there, I know that this large, well-appointed and wellequipped venue is ideal for a command show of this merit. On Thursday 30th September an invited audience from Clubs, Holiday Parks, Hotels, etc., will attend a sparkling show which comprises the 'best' entertainers in their category, as voted for by the readers of this Magazine which covers major centres of entertainment across the region. In fairness I'll add to that statement by saying that the Venue Magazine is also delivered to Doctors and Dentists waiting rooms, Leisure Centres and Sports Associations, so the diverse distribution makes for interesting voting. It's always great for an entertainer to be able to advertise himself or herself as 'award-winning' and it looks impressive on anyone's publicity. The artistes also benefit by being seen at such a prestigious event, and the 2009 Gala Command also showed that many bookers requested dates on winning acts on the gala night. Holding this show within realistic distance of most areas in the region will be of great benefit this year In 2008 we held the event in Worksop, which many thought was too much to the North of the area, In 2009 we held the event in Skegness which means that half your potential radius is cut off by water, thus everyone (almost without exception) has to travel East! Now I know that they say that you can't please all the people all the time but Gainsborough is superbly situated. The Blues Club offers great facilities and plenty of parking. Admission is by ticket which are available from the Noel Gee Publications team on 01522 722771

KEEPING IT LIVE 2010: This years first Keeping It Live showcase was held at The Horseshoe Bar, Pleasure Beach, Blackpool. These shows go from strength to strength in both the quality of acts and size of audiences. The show was extended to four days to cope with the volume of acts applying to perform and its understandable why when you take into account that even on the first afternoon session the venue was packed to the rafters with potential bookers. Noel Gee Associates were represented by three acts. Monday night saw the first of two appearances of It’s Bizzare. If you’ve never seen this show then you must! Gary Starr is a completely off the wall character. The act begins with a rather drunk E.T. arriving in a Tardis and ends with Gary setting off to the future in the Tardis once again to save mankind from certain destruction! Total mayhem! Elya is a product of the Keeping It Live Masterclass and appeared on the Wednesday evening session. She gave a good performance using the both the superb house band and backing tracks to give a small glimpse of what she is capable of. V-Burlesque is a sexy but tasteful burlesque style show. Featuring numerous costume changes, well worked choreography and some spectacular circus and fire routines. All in all a superb cabaret show and a great advert for the Agency.

THE VIEW FROM THE BAR: Keeping It Live? What can I do? I Can’t play a note, can’t or won’t sing. But I just happen to own a big public house and function room. So we created the right setting with a dedicated performing area, black back drop, full professional stage lighting, smoke system and the latest back screen projection where we can show DVD concerts or images behind entertainers. Now with the help of our agents and musical friends built up over the years I now host three, yes three, live events every week with free admission to the public and the place is rocking! Bands, duos and solo artistes are queuing up to play here, such is the atmosphere. So to my friends out there, with so many venues closing there will soon be nowhere for live entertainers to perform. So if you have the space GIVE LIVE MUSIC A LIFE! Micheal (Landlord) Chesters Balderton Newark

CAUGHT IN THE ACT: What do you do to cheer yourself up when summer seems a long way away and you are fed up of dark nights and rain? You find out where UK Chicago Blues are performing and you take yourself and any friends and family that need a shot in the arm out to see them. There is nothing more infectious than performers who enjoy what they do and can convey that to their audience, and these lads do that in spades. I defy anyone to sit still when they are on as the music and the fun just shine out from the stage. The format of the show will be no surprise as the tribute is a well known and award winning act, much loved in the area and further afield. There aren't many acts who can boast such a loyal and enthusiastic fan base, as evidenced at the East Midland Gala Command Awards, where they won best tribute act award for the second year running. I have always been lucky enough to catch the act in family venues, and it is always a good sign when the dance floor is filled with people of all ages. A quiet night out it is not, and all the way home the music is still with you, so don't be surprised if you catch yourself humming a few songs from the show days afterwards. So bring your own sunglasses, prepare for a good time and get out there! Moira

THE DAFT GAG PAGE: The Headmistress of a girl's school asked the local vicar to give her pupils a talk on Christianity and sex. The vicar was pleased to do so but not wanting to upset his prudish wife he told her that he'd been asked to speak about the joys of sailing. A week after the talk the headmistress met the vicar's wife in the local supermarket. She told her what a good talk her husband had given, “I can't believe it was that good” said the wife “He's only done it twice the first time he was sick and the second time his hat blew off!” An Englishman was applying for emigration to Australia. The Emigration officer asked “Do you have a criminal record?” “No” said the man “But if it's necessary I'll get one” On Monday the wife started a programme of walking ten miles a day. On Friday she was fifty miles away! After playing really badly a man turns to another player and says “I've never played golf so badly before!” The other player said “I didn't realise you'd played before!” Did you know that the fish that sleeps the most is the kipper? Now he was getting on in years the Flasher decided it was time to retire but he decided to stick it out for one more year. Last Christmas Good King Wenceslas telephoned his local pizza parlour. “The usual please” he said “Deep pan, crisp and even” My wife is a terrible terrible cook. Last night I went home and she was in tears “The cat ate your dinner” she wailed. “Don't cry darling” I gently soothed. “I'll buy you another cat” A man arrived halfway through the second half of a football match at Sincil Bank. He rushed into the stands and asked the bloke next to him what the score was. “Nil Nil” he replied. “Oh!” said the man “And what was the score at half time?” The Manager of a garden centre overheard one of his Nurserymen talking to a customer. “No, we haven't had any in ages and I don't know when we'll be getting any more.” When the customer had gone the Manager gave the member of staff a real telling off. “Never tell a customer we can't get anything whatever they want say that we'll order it for them! by the way what did he want?” “Rain” said the Nurseryman.
