“Privilege and Responsibility” is closing on 49 years, and we will celebrate St Joe’s 50th in 2012. We graduate 200 seniors to some of the best colleges in the land this June, and will welcome 220 fresh cadets this September. Each year, for fifty years, the faculty has worked hard to graduate students who are faithful, responsible, and intellectually capable. As we collect the history, the stories of the first days, the tales of the storied leaders that kept the mission going, of the notorious teachers that kept the place jumping, of the creative students who thought up things students today wouldn’t dream of—we find running through all the stories the core values of faith and family and friends. A St Joe’s experience lasts a lifetime, and is filled with memories that extend well beyond a fixed four years. The community here is better off because of St Joe’s, and wherever you are, we are confident your community benefits from your presence. Good things happen at St Joe’s; always have. We hope you will be able to wend your way back to campus during the 2012 celebrations. The backyard has been transformed with new fields (and some ten state championships in the last few years (51 overall, if you’re counting)). In the front, we will break ground this summer on a new academic center, launching a 21st Century School off on the next fifty years. St Joe’s is a great Privilege, one for which you have all been Responsible. Thanks, and when you can, “come home to Joe.”

St. Joe’s starts at home...
his past October launched the first of what we hope will become many St. Joseph High School’s Home Receptions. Over the following weeks and months, Alumni, current parents and students, faculty and staff and even prospective students and their families were welcomed into the St. Joe’s fold. Our first of the Alumni at Home Receptions was hosted by Scott and Nicole Mauritz Daly ’88 (we won’t hold it against him that he’s a Prep grad). Nick ‘86 and Amy Sullivan Disabella ’89 also joined the host committee and recruited some ’89 alums. Everyone came together to reminisce and hear about what’s new at SJ. Principal Ken Mayo, Dr. Fitzgerald and Director of Alumni Affairs, Michele Krasznai ‘89, all provided insight to where we are headed and the importance of the Annual Support Campaign. In fact, a great time was had by all and people were excited for the up and coming 50th Anniversary in 2012!

The Mike Burke Golf Tournament The 1st Annual Mike Burke ‘93 Golf Outing, in conjunction with the Western Connecticut Lacrosse Officials Association, was held at Whitney Farms in Monroe, CT on Tuesday, September 28, 2010. It was a great day to remember a great guy and to help his wonderful family. The event was a huge success: 112 golfers and 225 people at dinner, many of whom were St Joe’s alums. The golf outing will be an annual event and will be held again this year, September 27, 2011. Jeff Tavella ’93 and his wife, Jen, as well as Mike’s friends and family have also been working with the St. Joe’s Man Up Club during the Spring Lacrosse season, beginning with the Mike Burke Memorial Game at SJ this past April. Mikey and Colby Burke were the honorary captains and got to go out on the field for the coin toss and the Lacrosse team had jerseys made for them with Burke’s #13 on them. Adorable! In total, the Man Up Club raised about $1,000 total for the memorial scholarship that will be given to a graduating senior who plans to continue their career in lacrosse in college.

From the Flight Deck of CVN 77 Brian ‘Lex’ Luther ’80
I sat and thought on this one for a while. I’ll have been in the Navy 27 years this month and had four years of college before the Navy. I tried to remember the 13 year old who entered St. Joe’s and the 17 year old who left for Marquette in the fall of 1980. Here goes...
US Navy Capt. and 1980 St. Joseph graduate Brian E. Luther was designated a naval aviator in March 1986. He subsequently served as executive officer on board USS Friendship...I came to St. Joe’s and put on the Nimitz (CVN 68) and as commanding officer red jacket of a freshman. I had left the friends of my neighborhood and local school that I had known for years to of USS Tarawa (LHA 1). In March of 2011, begin my education at St. Joe’s. I was forced to make new Captain Luther relieved Captain Chip Miller friends from different towns but discovered that regardless of where we came from we had more in common than we III as commanding officer of aircraft carrier had differences. I also developed enduring friendships that USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) during a didn’t end just because we became separated by distance or time. The experience has let me enjoy meeting new change of command ceremony in the ship’s people and brought me joy of reacquainting with old friends hangar bay. We caught up with him before throughout my Navy career and its frequent moves. the USS George H.W. Bush’s very first deployment to ask: What are the lessons you most value as the commanding officer of an aircraft carrier that you learned at St. Joseph High School? 6 communiqué 2011
Sacrifice...I came to St. Joe’s a typical teenager--a
typical self-centered teenager. There are many things I’m told I should remember from the classrooms of high school which I, in fact, do not. What I vividly remember are the service projects, soup kitchens in the Bowery, and work in Appalachia with Glenmary Missions. I was just one person amongst so many who were sacrificing their time and effort to make the world a better place for one person, one family, or one community.
of my community. It taught me the value of service, the importance of sacrifice and that all work is noble. Finally, it taught me you could still have fun even if you were working hard (thanks Mr. DeTullio...and I still don’t know “What he wants!”).
Faith...I grew to realize my faith was not a spectator
sport and I was called to do something that would allow me to contribute, to serve. I felt a responsibility and an obligation to give something back to the community and nation that had given me so much. For me, the military became a natural fit. It’s a career where you place the needs or desires of the Service ahead of your own. It’s a career of service and sacrifice and my roots are in a faith that celebrates a life of service and the ultimate sacrifice.
Service...A shorter answer to the question of how St.
Joe’s prepared me might be my time at St. Joe’s gave me the self-confidence to meet new people and appreciate the diversity of their strengths and talents. It gave me a faith that provided strength in times of weakness and a moral framework which I used to guide my decision making throughout my life. It gave me an appreciation of my community and the tools to compete in the world outside

George H.W. Bush is scheduled to depart on its first combat deployment this spring. “[He] is the perfect man taking over at the perfect time,” Capt. Chip Miller said. “Capt. Luther will lead them well, and he will lead them with integrity.” (U.S. Navy photos by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Tony Curtis and Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Nicholas Hall)

the Scoresheet Boys Basketball wins 10th State Title
This past season, led by the senior trio of Oscar Assie (game-high 17 points), Brandon Jones (13) and Jake Fulton (10), the St. Joseph boys basketball team routed Fairfield Prep, 79-53, to win the 2011 CIAC Class LL State Championship. The game was played at Mohegan Sun Arena. The title is the tenth in school history, all under Head Coach Vito Montelli, who is in his 49th season coaching the team. St. Joe’s is now the only school in state history to win titles in all four classes (S, M, L, and LL). Montelli now has 853 total wins, the most in Connecticut and New England history, and was featured recently in Sports Illustrated as part of the magazine’s “Faces In the Crowd” section. The special section highlights coaches from across the U.S. who have led their respective teams to recent milestones.
Strong Finish for Division I First Year
The St. Joseph hockey team, in its first year playing at the Division I level, finished the 2010-11 season with a 21-6 final record and the #3 ranking in the final New Haven Register state poll. The Cadets played in the CIAC Division I state championship game, falling to the state’s top-ranked team, Fairfield Prep, 5-0 in front of a sold-out crowd at Yale’s Ingalls Rink. It was an unprecedented third straight state final in three different divisons for the team. SJ won the 2009 CIAC Division III championship and lost in the 2010 CIAC Division II finals. St. Joe’s also made the school’s first-ever appearance in the FCIAC Championship Game in 2011, losing an overtime thriller to CT’s second-ranked team, New Canaan. SJ got revenge on NC in the state semifinals, winning 6-5 and handing the Rams their only defeat of the season. St. Joseph Hockey was led by a host of talented seniors in 2010-11. Forward Patrick Corcoran was named First team All-State, CT Post All-Star, and First Team All-FCIAC. Forward Conor Crouse was named to the CT Post All-Star Team and Second Team All-FCIAC. Goaltender Zach Carrano was named a CT Post All-Star and Honorable Mention All-FCIAC, while Defenseman Kevin Robitaille was named a CT Post AllStar. Head coach Marty Crouse (Conor’s dad) was named CT Post Coach of the Year. 2010 communiqué 11

Many friends have found comfort during times of bereavement by requesting that donations be made to St. Joseph High school in lieu of flowers. Donations made in memory of a loved one can be a very meaningful way of insuring that the goodness of the deceased person will live on through the students of St. Joseph High School. Please include in the obituary: “Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to St. Joseph High School Scholarship Fund, 2320 Huntington Turnpike, Trumbull, CT 06611.” We will acknowledge all gifts to the donors. 50 years in the making...
Dear Friends and Alumni,
With graduation in the near future, I am excited to congratulate the Class of 1986 on their Silver Diplomas. They are celebrating 25 years since their Graduation day and we look forward to seeing them again at Graduation this year, June 3rd for the Silver Diploma Ceremony. Congratulations! As we contact all graduates over the coming months, and in an effort to update our records and encourage alumni networking, the Alumni Office has engaged Harris Connect to create a 50th Anniversary Alumni Directory. Harris will contact you initially by a postcard mailing. Please call the 1-800 number on the postcard to update your information; it will only take a few minutes of your time.
As we move forward in our planning for the 50th Anniversary Gala, we are looking for people to serve as Class Captains. This would entail spreading the word about our 50th Anniversary events to your class and encouraging attendance. We are also looking for silent auction donations. If you have a vacation home, a service to offer or tickets to a popular sporting event, we could use your help. There are so many ways you can get involved; either on a committee or serving on the Alumni Council. Please contact me for additional information at firstname.lastname@example.org. And finally, thank you to all who have been so supportive of alumni events this year. I am looking forward to a new school year; please feel free to contact me with any alumni event ideas. You are welcome to come to the Alumni Council committee meeting on September 14th at 7pm, in the white house in front of SJ.
