From the President William Fitzgerald, M.Div., Ph.D.

The Fifth ‘C’ On the eve of our 50th anniversary, we are exploring the traditions and mission that sustain St. Joseph High School, and exploring ways in which the past will lead us forward. Throughout this edition of the Communiqué you will see our commitment to readying our students for a more global and more public world. We are committed to educating creative, self-directed, passion driven learners. Yet, that is not entirely our mission. What makes St. Joe’s unique in the college preparatory marketplace is our faith commitment. Our faith does not encourage a retreat from the world. The Catholic Church has always sought to communicate the faith in ways most understandable to the contemporary age. We believe faith will increasingly become the language of the world, especially as cultures and ethnicities blend, and as global markets and national boundaries blur. The Church is always international: spiritually, intellectually, and pragmatically. Catholic Charities is often the most effective means of disaster relief, better at marshalling the resources where they reside and at side stepping the bureaucracies that often hamstring delivery where help is most needed. Spiritually, the Church is the agent who painstaking works through political and personal ambiguities to articulate a reliable social ethic and define the moral imperatives of our generation. While today’s progressive curriculum builds talent in critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity, St. Joe’s adds a fifth “C” to the 21st Century skill set. We believe the Catholic Christian will make all the difference in the global community. It is a world where change is expanding exponentially. It is a world desperate for definition and direction, a world in need of leaders who will, as Pope Benedict XVI exhorts, lead others to truth in love, to foster what he calls, “intellectual charity.” In Ex Corde Eccleseia, Pope John Paul II exhorts Catholic students to be open to all truth and to serve the entire human family. We do expect our graduates to lead well the world coming at them. It is why we place faith at the heart of our school, and then teach the head and the hands to follow the heart.

From the Office of College And Guidance Counseling Sue Siano, Director

The College and Guidance Counseling Department welcomes you to an exciting new year at St. Joseph High School. The emphasis on College in our title best describes the balance of our program. While we continue to be responsive to students’ academic, social, and personal needs, we are also dedicated to helping our students prepare for selective college admission with a thorough program spanning their four years here. We will update you throughout the school year on our workshops and events for each grade level as they occur. Our counselors, Jack Nogueira, Lisa Lewis, Megan Baird, and Suzanne Siano look forward to working with you and your children. The first important event on the calendar was our annual college fair. We invited all of our families to attend on Thursday, October 14, 2010 from 7 to 8.30pm in the St. Joseph gymnasium. Over 150 colleges, universities, technical schools, and armed services sent representatives. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to gather information and begin the college selection process. We anticipate a busy, fulfilling year as we strive to improve the College and Guidance Counseling program for our students. As always, we welcome your calls, visits, and suggestions. Best wishes to you all for a successful year!

From Admissions Peg Marino ‘71, Director

Looking for the Class of 2015! Each fall, St. Joseph High School Student Ambassadors - current SJ students who proudly represent our school and the SJ community - visit classes in 25 Catholic, private, and magnet schools in Trumbull, Stratford, Bridgeport, Shelton, and Monroe, as well as High School Nights in Milford, Newtown, West Haven, and Norwalk. Though the Ambassadors are far and away the best advertisement for St. Joe’s, our marketing effort does not stop there. In addition to the school visits, we advertise through radio, print, and internet venues, inviting all prospective students to visit our Open House and get a taste of SJ life. This year’s Open House was held on Sunday, October 24th, and involved a warm welcome in the gym followed by tours of the school led by our Ambassadors. Prospective students and their parents sat in on 7 minute classes of the major academic disciplines before taking “A Walk Through Student Life” - a showcase set up in the gym introducing all the clubs, sports, and activities available to the student body. Current SJ parents were on hand, serving refreshments and answering questions from the parents’ perspective. Prospective SJ families are discerning, however, and the competition is fierce. If the visitors feel welcome in our school, we must also reassure them that the education and experiences they will encounter here will be second to none. St Joseph High School is actively embracing the 21st Century learning environment as a place where the student is afforded every opportunity to grow academically and athletically, all while developing a deep rooted civic conscience. Interactive whiteboards can be found in every classroom. Laptop use is now encouraged in school and will be mandatory for all students within three years. Many of our students are even expanding their elective offerings with online courses through the Virtual High School. Our athletic program offers the most current facilities with the installation of an artificial turf field, six new tennis courts, a recently renovated gymnasium and beautiful new boys’ and girls’ locker rooms. Yet it is in the community where, again, our St. Joseph students display how the possibilities of modern learning and anywhere, anytime accessibility actually serve the principles of 21st Century stewardship. They have visited with the children of St. Theresa’s in Trumbull about the transition from grammar school to high school. pictured above: Matthew Batten They have stopped in to St. Joseph School in Shelton to read to the pre-K through fourth grades. Our Genetics students have visited St. Thomas Aquinas and Holy Family Schools in Fairfield to offer lessons on DNA to 7th and 8th grade science students. Our English students have written children’s books which they read at St James, Stratford, and our Campus Ministry made MRI-safe rosaries of brightly colored cord and shared them with the second graders of St. Thomas. And our student body, through a letter writing campaign, raised over $34,000 for the St. Jude foundation.

There is a sense of dedication - to family, to community, to excellence - which emanates from our students and faculty and can be felt by any visitor to our school. It is this spirit, fueled by our Christian faith, that helps St Joseph High School stand apart from the crowd. Visit us at www.sjcadets.org

From Athletics Jim Olayos, Head of Athletics

The year 2009-2010 was another banner year for St. Joseph High School Athletics. The football team captured the Class SS State football championship with a thrilling 14-3 victory over Montville. Softball was victorious in the Class M championships with a 3-2 victory over rival Lauralton Hall. In addition, both boys’ lacrosse and ice hockey reached the championship games before losing in close contests. We also enjoyed league success with an FCIAC championship being garnered by girls’ basketball. With five State championships in two years and the prospects of further success this year, the future of St. Joseph Athletics is bright. As this year promises to be another exciting year, we hope you can visit the campus to enjoy an event sometime soon. A winning season: Pictured right are just a few of our outstanding teams for the 2009-10 Athletic Year: Football, Girls’ Basketball and Hockey all placed with Championships

Educating for a world that doesn’t exist...yet

Ken Mayo, Principal

Recent research tells us the average college graduate of the Class of 2010 will hold fifteen jobs before she or he retires, and the majority of those jobs do not even exist today! You can well imagine how much discussion that statement generated. With what tools can we equip our students which will enable them to adapt to sets of circumstances and situations that don’t currently exist? The skills themselves are neither new nor exotic: critical thinking and problem solving, creativity, collaboration and teamwork, effective communication, a good work ethic, integrity, moral character and personal responsibility have been highly valued since humans arrived on the scene; and given our “shrinking” world, it is also crucial to develop a global consciousness and understanding of different cultures. To give our students every opportunity to thrive after they leave us, instruction and practice in these skills will be integrated into our curriculum. Make no mistake, the core curriculum is and will always be of paramount importance, and student achievement remains the measuring stick; but this is not an “either, or” question; it is a “yes, and” opportunity. Our laptop-friendly environment sets the stage for this type of learning, and we have established an extensive program of professional development so all faculty members will be versed in instructional strategies and techniques that foster the development of those critical skills. We will provide more opportunities for collaboration among the faculty and encourage creativity and inter-disciplinary initiatives, all to enhance student achievement. We have even streamlined our administrative structure and decision making process to better support the growth in teaching and learning to which we are committed. Of course, the crown jewel will be the new Academic Center which will provide the state-of-the-art setting and tools for this type of education. We thank everyone who had a hand in bringing this project to fruition, and eagerly look forward to its completion.

All in all it is an exciting time to be an educator, and a privilege to be at St. Joe’s.

Bill Panas ’70 finally found the time to accomplish something he’s wanted to do for years: some long distance backpacking. Over two weeks in June of ‘08 he covered the lower 150 miles of Vermont’s Long Trail which extends from the Massachusetts to Quebec borders following the peaks of the Green Mountains. This year, over two weeks in June, he finished the northern 125 miles. Covering 9 to 14 miles a day, he travelled

mostly alone but was joined for 8 of the 28 days on the trail by his son and his wife. He found the solitude uplifting, the trail rugged and challenging (especially the northern part) and the views spectacular. When not hiking, he is a manager of the Control & Integration Department at National Grid, an electric utility in Massachusetts. E-mail address is bpanas@hotmail.com if anyone would like to write. Karen Kiely ’70 recently finished her Masters in Gerontology and Human Development at St Joseph’s College in West Hartford, CT. Amy Warren (’03) took six of her middle school students to Costa Rica this summer to study

ecology, marine biology, medicinal plants, and experience a beautiful, diverse foreign culture. Fundraising over $2,000 for their trip, Amy and her students explored the Costa Rican rainforest, (by foot and by zipline!), providing encounters with animals like the poison dart frog, howler monkey, emerald basilisk, toucan, and tarantula – and much more! The group visited the coastline where they studied and participated in the release of leatherback sea turtle hatchlings. Amy and students also visited the village of the indigenous Bribri tribe who taught them how to make chocolate, shoot a bow and arrow, but most importantly, how to be resourceful with the paradise that surrounds them. The group participated in a reforestation service project, planting over 200 trees that will provide shelter for the endangered green macaw. The group tested their spirit of adventure as they rappelled down the Costa Rican waterfalls, snorkeled the coral reefs, enjoyed curative mineral waters of a local hot spring, and watched the Arenal Volcano erupt before their very eyes. It was an amazing experience for all, and a trip that has surely has them forever changed. Amy will be leading another student trip next summer to Spain and Portugal where students will join researchers to study the pilot whale and dolphins. If you would like to donate, please contact Amy at warrena@ces.k12.ct.us. At graduation this year, I spoke of “much.” I said that “much” was part of the Privilege and Responsibility that is the mission of St. Joseph High School. “The “much” here is a reference to the Gospel of Saint Luke – “Those to whom much has been given, much shall be required” (LK 12:48). The text does not say, “may” or “might,’ but rather “shall” be required. I encouraged our graduates to reflect on the many privileges of a St. Joe’s education, and to embrace their responsibility to use their talents and resources to help others.

“Much”

This gospel lesson applies to us all. The Annual Fund and the campaign for the new Academic Center is a core responsibility. Inside this report, you will see that tuition covers only seventy-five per cent of our operating budget. Twenty-five per cent of our budget comes from alumni, parents, and benefactors who understand that with privilege, comes responsibility. Donations to the Annual Fund provide tuition assistance to deserving students for the privilege of a St. Joe’s education, fund academic program improvements, such as the new 21st Century Skills initiative and several technological enhancements, provide assistance to the wealth of clubs and activities that the school offers, and enhance the rich spiritual life that is at the heart of the St. Joe’s experience. I recently asked Dr. Fitzgerald, now in his third year, what impresses him most about St Joe’s, and he said, “How easy it is to be Catholic here.” We know that is not always the case today, and how unique is the education that we offer at St. Joe’s. We are a gifted community. Colleges recognize the quality of our education. Last year 198 graduates were awarded scholarships and grants totaling $13,200,000. But even more remarkable, our students raised $35,000 for child cancer research, honored our military personnel, hosted Special Olympics, and provided thousands of hours of parish and community service. “Privilege and Responsibility” are not just words on the school crest; they represent core values at St. Joseph High School. As we approach the 50th Anniversary of St Joseph High School, we continue to strategically plan the advancement of the mission of St. Joe’s for the next 50 years. Please enjoy this issue of Communiqué, reflect on how much the school has enriched your life, and consider making a commitment to the Annual Fund, the Academic Center and to the future of St. Joseph High School. Very truly yours,

Patrick J. Lapera, Esq. Chair of Advisory Board of Directors Parent of Anne ’08 and Patricia ‘05
