INTIMATE INVESTMENTS RED CAPE REVOLUTION

Entrepreneurs often refer to their business as their baby. Understandably, both can be comparable considering the endless vested hours, passion, commitment and the innate ability and desire to create your very own masterpiece. The journey of being a mother and business owner are both vastly rewarding, but what if you want it all? I’m talking about the white picket fence, the husband, the companies and motherhood. Sounds like I am describing someone with superpowers, right? I understand this all too well. I am constantly in creation with the love of my life, building our empire one brick at a time, parenting a beautiful teenage daughter, working on several new startup companies, planning a wedding in less than three months, and planning for more babies. Does this sound like a tall order? I am not telling you this to impress you, but rather to impress upon you that this style of fast-paced-living can be possible. It’s important that you do not navigate these waters through rose-colored glasses. This lifestyle does not come without disappointments, but the reward is beyond measure. We elected to play many roles in our household; business partners, best friends, parents, and most importantly, lovers. Even though we play well together, sometimes maintaining balance can be a struggle. We only have so many hours in the day, and we desire to play 100% in all areas. When you are in a fight or flight mode, divvying up that time can sometimes seem impossible. We have adopted a firm belief that failure in any area is not an option. This mindset creates a drive, no matter what the situation is or how difficult it might seem. We would never intentionally let one of our businesses fail, that is, unless it served us well to do so. Similarly, a good parent would never abandon their child. We guarantee to nurture them, help them to form their own identity and do whatever it takes for our child to succeed. It’s important we instill 12  VENTRE

these same values in our babies, so they too can live a life of fulfillment. As an entrepreneurial parent, we become significant role models to our most imaginative minds. We do not just tell our kids they can achieve their dreams, we show them! My future husband and I know that we will always be parents, and we will always be business owners. We refuse to give up on our babies. We are both highly capable individuals who do not take no for an answer. Being a business owner and parent requires a different mentality. We need to create patterns, strategies, goals and anything else that might have a positive impact in keeping our lives in order. Below are some ideas to better create this living space of abundance. I call this the “mom-preneurial” balance. LITTLE ASSISTANT Getting your kids involved in your business creates excitement, understanding and accountability. We made flyers for our daughter to pass out, and she earned a percentage on any business generated from her work. She loved getting involved in helping us and loved earning money. BUILD YOUR OWN BUSINESS Help your child to start their own business so that you can teach them the value of hard work and the effort it takes to start a company. This could be anything from the good old lemonade stand, to helping them to publish a book. One of my best friends helped her daughter to publish and create her own fairy tale. The Prince and the Flea was created to empower girls and inspire boys, and the little 8-year-old author now has access to the magical world of watching her dreams manifest into something tangible. I can only imagine what she will become!

SUPERWOMAN SAVED THE DAY, ONE DAY AT A TIME! Looking at the BIG list of to-do’s can be overwhelming and sometimes daunting, so rather than looking at this seemingly endless list, we each write down five things that we can do the next day. This makes us feel accomplished. We break it down by category and by level of importance: business, family, and personal. Once those five things are completed, we begin the next list. Everything above and beyond that is just gravy!

lifestyle you do and watch your relationships soar. Giving up old friendships that no longer serve you can be hard, but to thrive we must fly with those who inspire us. We have all heard the saying, “Show me who you hang with and I will tell you who you are.” These practices can be like a sponge for our kids to soak up and take with them throughout life. Our favorite example would be our daughter, who at only 13, already knows what company and industry of which she chooses to be a part of. This type of teaching could help kick start young minds and future generations to create the life of their dreams. Big thanks to all of the supermoms, superdads and superheroes for being bold, beautiful and inspiring.

GETTING UP WITH THE CHICKENS Starting our day early and moving our bodies allows time to cleanse the mind and body, and time to get it all done. Try not to drag yourself out of bed but rather wake up with assertion, with passion and with purpose. Watch the positive impact that it has on the entire day. It might take some time to get to a point of not crawling to the shower, grumbling about the day ahead and feeling like crawling back to your bed for just another five minutes. Stay with it! The rewards will be immensely gratifying.

“IT’S IMPORTANT WE INSTILL THESE SAME VALUES IN OUR BABIES, SO THEY TOO CAN LIVE A LIFE OF FULFILLMENT.”

ADULT CURFEW Just like our daughter has a bedtime, we set one too. Sleep is a key ingredient to running efficiently. As self-diagnosed workaholics, we could work all day and night, but burning the candle at both ends will eventually take out your flame. KEEP COCKTAIL HOUR TO A MINIMUM There’s not much time for a social life while in the building stage, thus, surround yourself with friends who understand and support your dreams and your responsibilities. This is important so take note. Surround yourself with people living the same

THE INSIDE JOB

“The topic of conversation may not directly benefit me, but it may have a positive impact on the person talking.”

I

have an Uncle-in-law who grew up in a farm town. He loves farm equipment. One of his favorite things to talk about is a combine. He can go on for long periods of time talking about them. Although I grew up on a farm also, I’m far removed from the environment. I now have very little interest in the subject. I recall the first conversation he and I had about using combines. As I sat there struggling to listen and my wife snickered because she’d forewarned me of the conversations, I began to have a change of mind and possibly a change of heart. The thought came to me that listening isn’t so much about interest as it is about caring. I don’t have to care about the topic of conversation. What matters is that I care about the person with whom I’m conversing. The topic of conversation may not directly benefit me, but it may have huge benefits for the person who’s talking. The problem is we humans tend to always think along the lines of what’s in it for me (WIIFM). The challenge is breaking through that tendency so that we can truly allow connection to take place. Children or subordinates at work may also be often ignored. We either consciously or subconsciously feel what they have to say lacks value. We may feel this way until not listening comes back to bite us in the ass. Even then, we are prone to asking the question, “Why didn’t someone tell me this?” The issue isn’t that we weren’t told the problem, its that we weren’t listening.

A LESSON IN LISTENING

By Eric Lipsey CEO, Entrepreneur EricLipsey.com

m i n d f u l

a t t e n t i o n

Through this process of not listening, we can condition a child or a subordinate not to communicate with us. Soon they are sitting quietly in meetings, holding back invaluable information that could have saved or made us millions. In the case of a child, listening could have saved a headache. When trouble comes and it usually does, we are ready to ask questions. Unfortunately there is now a self-built barrier interrupting the flow of communication. Such situations are completely avoidable. If we could break down those barriers and allow ourselves to truly connect to another, we may find common ground or even common interest. If nothing else, we may be able to learn something new. Sure! The knowledge may not be readily useful, but it could very well come in handy in the future. I can remember several lessons from my childhood that, at the time, I had no interest in; however, they now ring true and are more useful than when I first heard them. By listening, we allow ourselves to build a bond or deeper relationship. We make the person feel we care without having to say so. Not so much that we care about the topic of conversation, but that you care about them. Remember! Listening isn’t always about our benefit, but the benefit of the person talking.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

From the book RISING STRONG by Brené Brown. Copyright © 2015 by Brené Brown. Reprinted by arrangement with Spiegel & Grau, an imprint of Random House, a division of Random House, Inc. All rights reserved.

THE PHYSICS OF VULNERABILITY When it comes to human behavior, emotions, and thinking, the adage “The more I learn, the less I know” is right on. I’ve learned to give up my pursuit of netting certainty and pinning it to the wall. Some days I miss pretending that certitude is within reach. My husband, Steve, always knows I’m mourning the loss of my young-researcher quest when I am holed up in my study listening to David Gray’s song “My Oh My” on repeat. My favorite lyrics are, “What on earth is going on in my head? You know I used to be so sure. You know I used to be so definite.” And it’s not just the lyrics; it’s the way that he sings the word def.in.ite. Sometimes, it sounds to me as if he’s mocking the arrogance of believing that we can ever know everything, and other times it sounds like he’s pissed off that we can’t. Either way, singing along makes me feel better. Music always makes me feel less alone in the mess. While there are really no hard-and-fast absolutes in my field, there are truths about shared experiences that deeply resonate with what we believe and know. For example, the Roosevelt quote that anchors my research on vulnerability and daring gave birth to three truths for me:

BRENEBROWN.COM 20  VENTRE

Entrepreneurial Lifestyle

I want to be in the arena. I want to be brave with my life. And when we make the choice to dare greatly, we sign up to get our asses kicked. We can choose courage or we can choose comfort, but we can’t have both. Not at the same time. Vulnerability is not winning or losing; it’s having the courage to show up and be seen when we have no control over the outcome. Vulnerability is not weakness; it’s our greatest measure of courage. A lot of cheap seats in the arena are filled with people who never venture onto the floor. They just hurl meanspirited criticisms and putdowns from a safe distance. The problem is, when we stop caring what people think and stop feeling hurt by cruelty, we lose our ability to connect. But when we’re defined by what people think, we lose the courage to be vulnerable. Therefore, we need to be selective about the feedback we let into our lives. For me, if you’re not in the arena getting your ass kicked, I’m not interested in your feedback. I don’t think of these as “rules,” but they have certainly become guiding principles for me. I believe there are also some basic tenets about being brave, risking vulnerability, and overcoming adversity that are useful to understand before we get started with the Rising Strong process. I think of these as the basic laws of emotional physics: simple but powerful truths that help us understand why courage is both transformational and rare. Here are four of the ten rules of engagement for rising strong.

1. If we are brave enough often enough, we will fall; this is the physics of vulnerability. When we commit to showing up and risking falling, we are actually committing to falling. Daring is not saying, “I’m willing to risk failure.” Daring is saying, “I know I will eventually fail and I’m still all in.” Fortune may favor the bold, but so does failure. 2. Once we fall in the service of being brave, we can never go back. We can rise up from our failures, screwups, and falls, but we can never go back to where we stood before we were brave or before we fell. Courage transforms the emotional structure of our being. This change often brings a deep sense of loss. During the process of rising, we sometimes find ourselves homesick for a place that no longer exists. We want to go back to that moment before we walked into the arena, but there’s nowhere to go back to. What makes this more difficult is that now we have a new level of awareness about what it means to be brave. We can’t fake it anymore. We now know when we’re showing up and when we’re hiding out, when we are living our values and when we are not. Our new awareness can also be invigorating—it can reignite our sense of purpose and remind us of our commitment to wholeheartedness. Straddling the tension that lies between wanting to go back to the moment before we risked and fell and being pulled forward to even greater courage is an inescapable part of rising strong. 3. This journey belongs to no one but you; however, no one successfully goes it alone. Since the beginning of time, people have found a way to rise after falling, yet there is no wellworn path leading the way. All of us must make our own way, exploring some of the most universally shared experiences while also navigating a solitude that makes us feel as if we are the first to set foot in uncharted regions. And to add to the complexity, in lieu of the sense of safety to be found in a well-traveled path or a constant companion, we must learn to depend for brief moments on fellow travelers for sanctuary, support, and an occasional willingness to walk side by side. For those of us who fear being alone, coping with the solitude inherent in this process is a daunting challenge. For those of us who prefer to cordon ourselves off from the world and heal alone, the requirement for connection—of asking for and receiving help—becomes the challenge. 4. We’re wired for story. In a culture of scarcity and perfectionism, there’s a surprisingly simple reason we want to own, integrate, and share our stories of struggle. We do this because we feel the most alive when we’re connecting with others and being brave with our stories—it’s in our biology. The idea of storytelling has become ubiquitous. It’s a platform for everything from creative movements to marketing strategies. But the idea that we’re “wired for story” is more than a catchy phrase. Neuroeconomist Paul Zak has found that hearing a story—a narrative with a beginning, middle, and end—causes our brains to release cortisol and oxytocin. These chemicals trigger the uniquely human abilities to connect, empathize, and make meaning. Story is literally in our DNA.

My hope is that the Rising Strong process gives us language and a rough map that will guide us in getting back on our feet. I’m sharing everything I know, feel, believe, and have experienced about Rising Strong. What I learned from the research participants continues to save me, and I’m deeply grateful for that. The truth is that falling hurts. The dare is to keep being brave and feel your way back up.

Ladies, imagine a sustainable product that could replace your need for tampons and pads. A stylish and comfortable pair of underwear that works as a double agent to keep you clean and dry during you’re menstrual cycle. THINX does just that! “Every pair of THINX has a top layer that wicks all liquid into a thin absorption layer right beneath, so that you feel super dry. This way you can wear’em all day long.” THINX women’s underwear are designed, by women in New York City, to absorb the liquid while keeping you dry and feeling clean. “By reimagining feminine hygiene products to provide support, comfort, confidence, and peace of mind, we aim to eliminate shame, empowering women around the world.”

THINX can be worn in addition to tampons or pads; and yes, even as an alternative! THINX is also working towards a greater goal. They have partnered with AFRIpads in Uganda, which trains women to work for themselves making and selling reusable pads. Each pair of underwear you purchase helps to fund this cause. This cause in turn give girls access to protection during their cycle to help prevent them from missing school. According to the article, Women can Bleed Green on alternet.org, a woman throws away 250 to 300 pounds of feminine hygiene products in her lifetime. In addition the Ocean Conservancy found that tampon applicators made up 2.2% of debris on U.S. coastlines.

Consider all the waste that could be avoided by purchasing and wearing THINX.

Diamonds Unleashed partners with non-profit groups She’s the First and Girls Who Code. Both organizations are working toward the end goal of empowering women around the world. She’s the First works to provide scholarships for young women in low-income countries so they may gain education and in turn create a new generation of leaders.

Girls Who Code is working towards bridging the gap for women in engineering and technology. According to en.unesco.org, increasing education for girls would improve child nutrition, reduce the rate of young mothers, narrow the pay gap between men and women, and make it more likely for women to find work. How did you first become involved with She’s the First and Girls Who Code?
The mission of Diamonds Unleashed is to inspire women’s self-worth and create educational opportunities for girls. Our focus is on education because I believe if you provide a girl with an education, you not only change her world, but also the world of those around her. We researched and talked with many organizations and felt these organizations aligned with our mission and were small enough, we could make a big impact to their organizations.

What would you like our entrepreneurial audience to know about Diamonds Unleashed and your cause?

Diamonds Unleashed is a brand with a social purpose to inspire women and their self-worth through the symbolism of a diamond. We are rethinking what it means for a woman to buy a diamond and what a diamond stands for. With this platform, 100% of the net profits are donated to organizations that support girls’ education. The recipients of these funds for our inaugural year are She’s the First and Girls Who Code.

How has being a mother influenced your passion for supporting these nonprofits through your trade?
I was blessed to be given an amazing education by my parents and also provide a top-tier education to my own daughters. I realize the importance of an education and what a gift my education was. I truly believe that when we give a girl an education, she has the opportunity to change her world. These girls live in a world of poverty, get married at a very early age and often have few options without an education. Providing that dramatically changes their world and the world of their siblings, friends and community.

What have you learned about following your passions without losing sight of still being “mom” in your family As a mom, what can you tell and who you are as an other mom’s about the process individual? Where do you of becoming an entrepreneur? find that balance? The practical’s such as raising capital, creating a My daughters are older, one is a business model, and building junior in college and the other has a brand as well as a graduated and is working at her first job. I’ve always told my girls it is client base?
Starting a business is a juggling act. You are often on your own or have a very small team where everyone is wearing many different hats. It’s important to surround yourself with people who can provide a strength you don’t have and who are committed and loyal. Be prepared to spend long hours and with little reward in the beginning. It’s important to have a strategy and prioritize what is going to move you forward and focus there.

Why diamonds?
I am a certified gemologist and have been in the jewelry business for more than 25 years. As I was resetting my own engagement ring, I started thinking about diamonds and asking friends if they would buy a diamond for themselves – the responses were a resounding “No”; so I started thinking about why. Women buy homes, cars, boats and other big ticket items – why not a diamond? When you think about what adjectives are used to describe diamonds (multi-faceted, brilliant and strong); they powerful words can also be used to describe women. My goal for Diamonds Unleashed is that we will REIMAGINE the symbolism of a diamond to represent women. important to have your own career, no matter your circumstances. I feel it’s vital to have the ability to express yourself as an individual. I’ve always shown them it’s possible to be a mother and have a career.

Now they are out of the house, the balance is easier; but family has always been most important to me. I come from a close-knit family and always make a point to spend special quality time with them.

Is there a hope your entrepreneurship will help your children see they might also be able to help others through business ownership?

My daughters are amazing and know that helping others will be a big part of their lives, whether it’s through business ownership or other philanthropic ventures; both of my girls organized “field trips” for inner city kids in NYC where they would take them to museums, the theater, musicals and other arts related events that they would normally not be exposed to.

I look forward to more collaborations similar to this. I am looking forward to expanding our Salon Series of speaking events to more cities as well as overseas. We are already planning an event for London and plan to expand around the world to the Middle East, China and all over Europe. And I hope we have provided educational scholarships to hundreds of girls and watch their progress as their lives change for the better.

How do you feel motherhood has prepared you for the work you are doing now?
Motherhood is akin to running a small organization; it requires multi-tasking, strategic planning, budgeting and a lot of human relations. You also need to have thick skin. It’s the ultimate training ground.

What are some of the greatest challenges you currently face with work and motherhood and how do you manage them?
At this stage in my life, as an empty nester, it’s definitely easier on the day to day, but I make sure I have time to talk with my girls everyday. We Snapchat a lot, too! It’s really all about carving out the quality time where I am really focused on them.

What advice do you have for mom’s who are considering business ownership?
It’s important to have true passion for what you are doing. It takes a lot of energy to launch a business and there are A LOT of ups and downs, wins and losses. Passion for what you’re doing will help keep you going, even when everyone else tells you to stop.

What would be the best Mother’s Day gift for the successful mother who “has everything”? (We mean you!) Now that I am an empty nester, I miss my girls and the special time I used to spend with them. We all love to travel and explore, so I am taking time off to spend with them on a fun adventurous vacation.

The response has been overwhelming. We have so many pieces to our movement that I really can’t pick one single achievement. We launched our brand and social media channels in December and have had amazing growth. Our International Women’s Day campaign reached 7.8 million people in one day. We have a network of 400 female (and male) ambassadors who believe in what we’re doing and are helping to spread our message. Our Salon Series has held four events in 2016 and each one was filled to capacity and finally our product collections for both HSN and Neiman Marcus have been extremely well received.

NAKED HEALTHY

Jennifer Elizabeth Masters has been there, done that, gotten the t-shirt, washed it and turned it into a sundress. With an appetite for life and passion to make things happen, this youthful 61-year-old has lived all across the planet and mastered a multitude of jobs. A former cheerleader, growing up in Canada, Jennifer wanted to travel. So what did she do? . She became a flight attendant for Air Canada. Decades and three children later she migrated to something more colorful and creative, becoming a Certified Master Gardener. Then for well over a decade, helped hundreds of clients beautify their property, running her own successful landscaping business, “For Heavens Scapes.” Yet, that’s not what is so interesting about this smiling woman in purple. Somewhere in the mid 90’s something triggered in Jennifer and things got a whole lot more metaphysical. 36  VENTRE

Meditation, happiness, crystals, tarot readings and ultimately energy clearings became the new norm for this constantly reinventing personality. Before I go into Jennifer’s description of what she does, I want to give a little scientific explanation of what I mean when I say the word, “energy.” The most advanced general consensus in the scientific community, as it stands today is in favor of String Theory. String Theory is incredibly simplified states, that are even smaller than our cells and even smaller than our atomic level. We are made of tiny vibrating strings. Simply put, pure energy, which you can manipulate. It starts to make a little more sense when you also remember that all matter, including people, planets and everything in between are 99.9999999% empty space. Why does the ground feel solid? It’s because the atoms in your feet repel the atoms in the floor. They both have a wall of negatively charged electrons that repel one another like two magnets. We all have a spirit and an aura. Energy! Okay, back to Jennifer. Along her holistic road of growth, a friend suggested Jennifer experience her first energy clearing. Open minded as usual, she agreed. “One clearing made me feel more peaceful, centered and calm, giving me clarity and grounding,” Jennifer recalls. The second went deeper and allowed me to release another layer that bubbled up. With each session my energy field was lighter, more positive and more expanded.

“Anxiety, worry and fear was eliminated as well as sabotaging patterns that kept me stuck.” It became such a profoundly positive experience for J.E.M., she says, “I knew this was work I had to do for others.” That was the catalyst to Jennifer’s new life as a healer. She became certified that year. She then continued her studies in fast forward to become a Master Energy Healer. Feeling compelled to continue her studies into healing, as if a duck to water, she became a Certified Hypnotherapist.

“When there is trauma, there are trapped emotions.” She releases what is trapped. Whether the addiction is food, sexual, substance, gambling, depression, regardless of severity, she is able to assist. One in six men are molested as children. That can have echoing effects on a human being. It’s not something people feel comfortable talking to just anyone about. JUST BEAN YOURSELF

A coffee shop, with a supervised playground, WiFi and a community of moms building each other up. What more could you ask for.!!

Entrepreneurial Lifestyle

As a mom, I thought a place like Java Mama only existed in my exhaustion induced daydreams, but Alicia Campen has turned this into a reality for many overwhelmed mamas’ in need of a short break and a good cup of coffee! The idea for Java Mama, a coffee shop where moms can enjoy a peaceful cup of coffee while their littles play in a supervised play area, came to Alicia after the birth of her daughter. As a new mom she enjoyed going to her local coffee shop and being in the company of other adults and being able to get some work done while her baby slept peacefully beside her.

However, as her daughter grew and became more active, Alicia soon found her experience at the coffee shop growing more challenging and much more brief.

“Alicia dreamed of a place where she enjoyed her coffee, could get some work done, and had someone to help watch her child for an hour or two, without costing an arm and a leg. This place was a sophisticated coffeehouse with a supervised play area where kids five and under could explore, play and socialize. In this place, Alicia could work, comfortably interact with adults and still keep an eye on the people watching her daughter. This place offered free WiFi and welcomed parents, children and anyone who appreciated great coffee drinks and tasty fare.” In itself a place that embraces mothers and their children without those condemning looks of annoyance or stares of judgement is rare. Add to that the relaxing atmosphere of a coffeehouse and I’m sold! The first Java Mama opened its doors in February 2007, after five years in the works. With the success of their La Mesa, California location the brand began to expand. Now in Folsom CA, Ft. Wayne IN, Baton Rouge LA, and upcoming in Washington D.C. Not only do they offer supervision of your kids while you wind down with a good cup of coffee, they are also interactive with the motherhood community. They offer classes in prenatal/postnatal yoga, music, drama, art, language, baby sign, and fitness. Every mom can experience that sense of isolation from time to time, this is a great resource for mothers to get out and enjoy time with their children and connect with other parents, other adults! They also offer packages for children’s birthday parties. VENTREMAGAZINE.COM MAY 2016

No sweatshops, No child labor, No harmful chemicals. This is a great accomplishment in a world where, according to dosomething. org, 168 million children between the ages of five and 14 are forced to work. 59% of those children are working in agriculture. In Sub-Saharan Africa one in five children are in child labor. Pact is standing up to the unethical, hazardous working conditions, and slave wages that so many people across the world are subjected to. All the while creating a high quality product that changes lives from the field to the consumers. “Child labor is an epidemic in the clothing and textile industry, and we believe that children should be getting grass on their shirts, not manufacturing it.” Pact uses Non-GMO organic cotton. According to theworldcounts.org, cotton is one of the dirtiest industries in the world with very large pesticide use. Child labors often apply the pesticides with no protection. The chemicals used can cause health issues from spontaneous abortion to cancer. &WEALTH O

by Kristen Judd Owner/CEO of Money Secrets

ver the last couple of decades, we have seen a shift in roles, not only inside the household but outside the household as well. That shift is centered around Money. As the economy has changed our family dynamics have also evolved. Whether they both work outside the home or have a home based business, two income families are far more prevelent. Let’s be honest, the neeeds of women are much different than that of a men, which brings me to ask, “Why is no one addressing this?” You are strong and independent. You juggle a crazy schedule and at the end of the day – things are still getting done. I get it!- It used to be that the male in the house generated all the money and made all the money decisions. Not anymore! In fact, did you know: • During a lifetime, 90% of all women will have sole responsibility of their finances, yet 79% of them have not prepared for this. • Most women can expect to live to about age 92… that is a long time to have to create a paycheck. • 45% of women work part-time so they are less likely to have workplace retirement benefits. • Because of maternity and family leaves, which total about 13 years, women will receive about half the pension benefits of retired men. • In 2009, nearly 4 in 10 working wives earned more than their husbands. • Today, women earn the majority of doctorates and master degrees and nearly 60% of US college students are women. • 25% of women are the primary financial decision-makers in their households, while 2 in 10 feel “very prepared” to make those decisions. Half indicate they “need help” and one third feel that they “need a lot of help.” • 90% of women say they feel the need to be more involved in financial planning. • As of 2013, it is estimated that there are more than 8.6 million women-owned businesses in the US, generating over $1.3 T in revenues and employing nearly 7.8 million people.

WOW! These are just a few of the stats regrding Mommies and Money… really women in general. Over the last few years we have seen a change in how much money we are making, who is making the money decisions and who is handling the household budget as well. Where do we go from here? Education. We went to school for 12 to 16 years to learn to read, write and do math. The things we should have been taught are how to raise kids and manage money! It’s difficult to find good information out there when it comes to money. There are probably just as many myths about money out there as there are about dieting and losing weight. There are a few simple principles that have been around for a very long time – they have never changed and they likely never will. Understanding money and how it works doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, employing these simple strategies will guarantee your success! This is what they are:

1. Time Value of Money 2. Compound Interest 3. The Power of Tax Deferral – the tax game. 4. Never lose money – Warren Buffett Rule 5. Plan for protecting Your money

I’ll leave you with this… 62% of women don’t work with a financial professional – and 69% that do work with a professional don’t see their professional as a trusted source for financial information. Most will seek information from the internet and you know what they say about the internet? If it’s on Google – it must be true. Find a professional that will help you make heads or tails of what you currently have, who’ll help you understand the rules listed above, and ultimately make you feel more confident about your money and your situation. Find a teacher, a women’s money mastermind group and a safe haven to ask silly seeming questions that everyone else want to ask but are too afraid.

She fell in love with the Bed & Breakfast experience after her first stay in one. The intimacy and “at home” feeling one has a hard time finding with the traditional “hotel” stay, was inviting to her imagination and in 1995, her dream became a reality with the opening of their first Inn, in Brooklyn (pg. 62-63). She and her husband Glenn purchased and restored the mansion, which to the neighborhood children was considered the “haunted house”. The restoration of this mansion was documented by HGTV series “Restore America.”

#boymom, #girlmom, #twinmom

We have all seen these hashtags and many more during our time on social media. These fun hashtags are fun and empowering to mama’s everywhere. The founders of Mother Trucker & Co. have taken this and accessorized it. Mother Trucker & Co. was started by “two crazy boy mamas,” Shannon Barker and Michaela Ehrle. They were searching for the perfect hat, but ended up taking the social media world by storm with their selfies and hashtags and their #MOMLIFE trend. They have made their way to being accessories for the likes of Jenny McCarthy, Jana Kramer, Tess Holiday, Kail Lowry, Vicki Gunvalson and Gretchen Rossi. Their product matches fun with fashion.

only $25 each!

They have hats for all types of mamas! Twin Mom, Boy Mom, Dog Mom, you name it! They even have hats for your little ones. What little boy wouldn’t look completely precious strutting around in a hat that says “mama’s boy?” They have hats for the bride to add a little more fun to the pre-wedding charade or bachelorette party.

While their California-based empire builds, these two amazing women are still pulling off the daily juggling act of being mommies to their boys. On top of running Mother Trucker & Co. they are driving the carpool and running their homes.

PHILANTHROPY MISSION A portion of every Bella Tunno product sold is donated to the Matt Tunno MAKE A DIFFERENCE Memorial Fund. This fund was established in loving memory of Matt Tunno. Matt is Michelle Tunno Buelow’s (founder of BELLA TUNNO) late brother. Matt’s life was cut short, but his memory and passion will live on through proceeds from Bella Tunno sales. Matt was a highly passionate and loving brother, son, friend, student, musician and environmentalist. In his absence, we will try to meet his goals and make his dreams a reality. By donating to drug and alcohol abuse education, prevention and rehabilitation programs our goal is to help others live the life the Matt would have wanted. Additionally, Bella Tunno donates to programs supporting at-risk children and teenagers.

Bello Tunno Buy One/Give One Initiative is currently connecting one person in America to one meal for every product purchased. The running tally on their website, puts meals donated at 881,605. According to feedingamerica.org, 48.1 million Americans lived in food insecure households, including 32.8 million adults and 15.3 million children. This is a cause that sometimes doesn’t register on the priority list for Americans, because when we think of children going hungry, we think of third world nations, not America. Yet, it is happening right here at home and thanks to charitable businesses, like Bella Tunno, doing the right thing, children are getting fed. “At Bella Tunno, we see BRIGHT as more than just a look. It’s the heartbeat of our brand. It’s an approach where we design every COLORFUL little product to make a difference in a life. We made a Big, Bright Promise that we will donate ONE MEAL TO ONE CHILD IN AMERICA for every product we sell. When you buy one of our accessories, you feed one child. It’s that SIMPLE. It’s that IMPACTFUL. It’s that IMPORTANT. It’s all part of a big plan to make this world a little brighter..”

“I started Bella Tunno after my brother passed away at the age of 30. I was 27 at the time it became instantly clear that life is meant to be lived to the fullest, every moment celebrated...

I realized that beige is for walls, not people. From that moment, I chose to do better, live brighter and love bigger. Life should be colorful and Bella Tunno is a physical extension of all these beliefs.” - Michelle Tunno Buelow

HOW THE BRAND CAME TO BE...

According to an interview with bizjournals.com, after the passing of her brother, “Buelow decided to leave work to spend time with her parents while she grieved her brother’s death. Most days she didn’t make it out of her pajamas. When she found out she was pregnant, she passed the time making her baby-to-be colorful burping cloths, changing pads and pacifier clips – products with straight corners because Buelow didn’t really know how to sew.” Her friends started taking notice of her home made products and asking where they could get their hands on them. It was then she started to see the value of what she was doing. That hobby of making items for her coming blessing, turned into her products retailing in 3,500 stores!
