t begins with a question, “Will you marry me?” Once spoken, the ring becomes the thing. While the engagement ring is still very much an ongoing tradition, it has evolved over the years. The ring is a symbol of a promise, and carries deep sentiments that will last far past the wedding day. Formerly known as “betrothal rings,” engagement rings were first used by the Romans, but not really emphasized until the 13th century, and they were not made of gold with inlaid diamonds. The diamond tradition did not catch on until the 1930s, and it has been going strong ever since. Even in a pressed economy, diamonds are big business for jewelers today. According to Modern Bride Magazine, about 80 percent of brides walk down the isle sporting a beautiful diamond ring that is part of a wedding set. George Thompson of George Thompson Diamond Company in Camarillo has the best job, he admits. Of all the professions one can choose, the jewelry business is, for most of his customers, all about being

in love and celebrating that love. And that is a trend that has never died in the 35 years he has been in business. “You can tell when the love is real,” Thompson said. Thompson takes pride in his one-of-kind engagement and wedding collection. Designed and manufactured at his factory in Thailand — the manufacturing mecca for most international jewelry brands — Thompson is able to provide the highest quality product at the most reasonable price. The George Thompson Collection is vast, and over the years, he’s been able to cater tens of thousands of couples. The tried and true white gold has never gone out of fashion, he says, but he warns against platinum since it never seems to keep its shine. Diamonds are still the primary stone, but the marquise- and pear-shaped diamonds are so out of fashion, he says, he couldn’t even pay someone to take them. What’s hot: princess-cut! White gold princess-cut are a longstanding hot commodity and have been for the last several years, but he is also seeing an uptick in sales in the cushion-shape diamond. What continued on page 10

Thompson really gets excited about, though, is the increasing demand for custom designs. He relayed the story of a couple who skipped their 50th wedding anniversary after they found out the husband, during back surgery, had kidney cancer. For their 51st wedding anniversary, Thompson helped design their anniversary bands with 51 diamonds in the shape of two hearts with their names etched in tiny script on the rings. Whether custom-made or rings from the George Thompson Collection, customers can be guaranteed all have been made and created with love in mind that will last forever. Ventura’s Jewelry Couture by Sahiti is a destination stop for young couples. “Wedding sets make up a huge amount of sales here at Jewelry Couture,” said store manager Roger Gorman. The store is a direct diamond wholesaler, so customers can save considerable amounts of money when looking for the perfect bridal set. Jewelry Couture has three master jewelers onsite, and with more than 13,500 square feet, it is one of the largest jewelry stores in the country. It features some of the finest design brands, such as Tacori, Simon G, and the Deco-

age Bridal Collection — its own in-house brand designed by Sehati. Whether you are picking out a bridal set or choosing three separate entities (engagement ring, bride’s band, groom’s ring), the choices today are limitless. Trends over the last five to six years have leaned heavily toward vintage designs. The halo ring, which has been around since the 1920s, has also gained popularity over the last few years, with its circle border of diamonds surrounding a center diamond, enhancing the center stone and increasing the appearance of its size. Where white gold used to be an afterthought, it dominates the bridal jewelry industry today.“I cannot even remember the last time someone under the age of 35 even asked for or bought yellow gold,” says Gorman. While a good percentage of men take women to a jeweler to pick out a ring, Gorman believes women today still appreciate the romance involved with being surprised. “Men are a lot more savvy today. The Internet has helped men to become better prepared, as far as knowing styles, options and acquiring product knowledge about the purchase of loose diamonds,” Gorman said. Camarillo Ranch, which is owned by the city of Camarillo, has quite a legacy. What was once a 10,000-acre Spanish land grant has become one of Ventura County’s most popular wedding venues. The historic 4.5-acre site has five event venues, which include the restored Victorian mansion, the unique and beautifully renovated Mule Barn, and plush gardens, which are complete with a wedding gazebo, a fountain and a rose-covered arch.
