One of the first things that anyone sees, before a bride marches down the aisle is the flowers. Flowers have been an important element of the wedding ceremony for ages. Originally, bouquets had their origin in ancient Greece and Rome. Both the bride and groom wore garlands around their necks as a sign of hope and fertility. The Celtics had another idea: Garlands were not made from flowers at all, but from potent-smelling herbs and spices that were woven together to drive evil spirits away. Today’s bride is not concerned with running off evil spirits, but with creating a vision that expresses her heart and personality. Flowers are an important part of that expression and reflect personal style. Michelle (Shell) Hirrel of Shell’s Petals is a local florist with a passion for life and a gift into design. As a wedding specialist, she is ever committed to the job of making the bride shine and everybody happy. Her relationship with flowers began at 15 years of age, when she began working at Loma Vista Flower Shop here in Ventura. As a young designer, she made her way to Los Angeles and became actively involved in the wedding/ events industry there. After returning to Ventura, she opened Shell’s Petals in 2005 on credit cards and was granted a business loan from Women’s Economic Venture (WEV). Since that time, her business has taken off. She received the 2012 Wedding Wire Brides Choice Awards and she frequently speaks on behalf of WEV in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. “The bridal bouquet is one of the most CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

Everything else is secondary.” In today’s economy, budgets are paramount. Everyone is focused on getting more for less. Hirrel asks brides to be very honest about how much they can spend. While a wedding is a fun event, there is a lot of pressure in today’s economy. “Today’s florist must be sensitive to the bride’s desires, to her budget and also to her emotions — this is her dream day,” she said.“Some brides have been planning their wedding since they were young girls.” Today’s bride is much savvier. “The brides are much more prepared today than they used to be,” said Michelle Rein, local owner of Passion Flowers.“They know what they want. They are very directed and it’s making my job easier to accommodate them.” While the bouquet is primary, budgeting is essential. There are numerous ways to cut costs without compromising quality, such as using single peonies or hydrangeas for the bridesmaids and candles instead of flowers on the table. 10 — Ventura County Wedding Guide — 2012

“I recycle flowers,” Hirrel said.“If a bride is having an arch for the ceremony, the arrangements hooked on the arch can be used as table centerpieces. There are ways to cut corners. When you try and satisfy a huge party, then you sacrifice your budget for your décor and just about everything else.” Whether you are having an intimate ceremony with family and selected friends, or having a Father of the Bride re-enactment, good planning is indispensable.“A bride needs to have a good strategy,” Hirrel said. With more than 35 years’ experience behind her, Rein saw the slump side of the floral industry here in Ventura County, especially with popular chain stores carrying vast amounts of “cheap” flowers. Things are definitely picking up, however, the wedding industry is getting busier again. “Destination weddings are still popular, and because we are located in such a prime vacation spot, we still do a lot of weddings for out-of-towners,” Rein said. When planning your wedding, allow your florist creative liberty to interpret what you want your flowers to convey. Don’t focus on specific flowers as much as a theme, and know your estimated budget. Your florist and your pocketbook will thank you! W

RIDES AND GROOMS are choosing destination weddings with increasing frequency because they combine the excitement of travel with potential cost savings, compared to staging a larger ceremony and reception close to home. Simi Valley wedding coordinator Terry Kostbar owns Flawlessly Planned Events, and organizes weddings for clients from across the country. She says Ventura County’s coastline is popular, partly because couples can have ceremonies right on the sand at properties like the Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Hotel and Resort.

“Who doesn’t love the West Coast? You can have a destination wedding here almost all year long. There are a lot of places on the beach,” says Kostbar. Even considering travel costs and hotel bills, well-planned destination weddings can be a good value. “It definitely limits the number of guests who will be attending,” says Kostbar. “It

keeps it to family and close friends.” The guests who do travel to a destination wedding also tend to enjoy it more than nuptials close to home. “They absolutely love it. It’s a minivacation for them. And usually what guests will do is they will plan to stay either longer before the wedding or extend it after the wedding,” says Kostbar. Lake Tahoe is the No. 1 destination wedding location in California. Francesca Stone is Senior Events Manager at the Embassy Suites Lake Tahoe Hotel and Ski Resort in South Lake Tahoe, right across the border from Stateline Nevada casinos. She does indoor weddings during the winter and uses a private beach for lakefront ceremonies during warmer parts of the year. Stone says there’s something for everyone to do around Lake Tahoe, like hiking, boating and mountain biking. It’s also an extremely romantic setting. “I think it’s the scenery,” says Stone. “I mean, it’s really stunning with the lake and moun-

tains. Even in June there’s still snow on the ridges.” Emily Coelho works for a Massachusetts-based company called DestinationWeddings.com that collaborates with wedding planners, vendors and resorts all over the world. She says some of the most popular wedding destinations are Jamaica, Mexico and Hawaii. If money is no object, some brides consider Italy to be especially romantic. Coelho says Tahiti and Fiji are also spectacular luxury destinations. “They have the over-the-water bungalows and very unique locations that you don’t necessarily find by going to the Caribbean,” says Coelho. OT WEDDING-GOWN DESIGNER Amy Michelson of Ventura has made her mark in the fashion world by designing elegant gowns that are for grown-up brides. They are soft, voluptuous, with a hint of gossamer, and focus on making the woman as beautiful as possible. After a stint in the world of couture, Michelson struck out on her own, and Hollywood’s A-list took notice. Some of her many celebrity clients include Salma Hayek, Sandra Bullock, Faith Hill, Kelly Ripa and Kate Walsh. Michelson’s gowns are in demand because of the thought that goes into the concept of each gown. Her gowns are known for their charmeuse, bias-cut Old Hollywood look, conjuring Jean Harlow’s gowns, which were modest and revealing at the same time.

“My tag line is ‘real-girl glamour’ because the gown is glamorous but it’s accessible, a more relaxed elegance. I have noticed that there is a trend toward the softer, more ethereal, flowing sheer fabric and lace. I designed an evening gown for her.” One recent wedding client was a fantastic experience for Michelson.“I designed a wedding gown in 2007 for Laila Ali. She has this gorgeous figure, womanly, statuesque, beautiful. She was lovely; she knew exactly what she wanted. She was the least fussy person I have ever worked with, not what you generally think about celebrities. She has a great sense of style and knew exactly what she wanted. We cocreated the dress, so it was really fun.” Sometimes, the layers of people surrounding a star can get in the way. Such was the case when Michelson was called two days before the Academy Awards by a stylist for Kim Basinger. The gown that was requested turned out to be the wrong style and Basinger wore something else. Michelson said that disappointment is part of working with celebrities. You can tell a Michelson gown by it’s unique back. This is the result of Michelson’s attention to detail, not just in the design but also the way the gown will be worn. In a New York showroom: (from left to right) The Buttercup dress: a silk taffeta strapless gown with a “crumb-catcher” neckline, pale gold metallic netting sash at the natural waist of bodice; the dress is a tiered fit with flare skirt with petticoat. The Santorini: low back halter gown of imported French re-embroidered Alecon lace, sheer silk organza sash tied in frothy bow in back; mermaid silhouette is close to the thigh with a generous fishtail flounce of lace skirt at the bottom over a petticoat — Lace is lined with a skin tone silk to pop the lace pattern-another way to add a touch of color. The Laurel: Strapless silk charmuese gown with flattering, diagonal ruching on bodice, which has a built in bra and boning to really flatter an hourglass figure. A French blue satin sash is at the hip, adorned with hand crafted Swarovski baguette cut crystal wreaths. Gown has a mermaid silhouette and the signature Amy Michelson Hollywood red carpet glamour style.
