EDITOR’S NOTE

Flipside If you were to take a map of the world and fold it over at the equator, matching up the Pacific coastlines of North and South America, you’d find that Ventura—at around 34 degrees north latitude—lands near a small fishing village in Central Chile. Essentially, it’s a mirror image of this area, familiar yet precisely backward; the prevailing sea breeze and cold ocean currents push up the coast rather than down, and even now while spring is in full bloom in Ventura County, the opposite season colors the Chilean landscape toasty autumn hues. Could there be a better place for me to write this particular note? A travel-themed issue of a regional publication sounds a bit oxymoronic, I know. But we kept it local by editing outside the box, including articles like Amber Lennon’s unique take on the Ojai Storytelling Festival (p. 20), where listeners journey “through the veil” into imaginary worlds. And then there is Patagonia: the place and the Ventura-based company that changed the business world. If you don’t know the backstory on Patagonia, Inc. and its founder Yvon Chouinard, you owe it to yourself to read up on one of Ventura County’s proudest assets. But you’ll have to do that elsewhere. Yvon and his company have been written about more times than he’s comfortable with, in everything from Outside magazine to the New York Times and Vanity Fair.

M AY 2 0 0 9

We took a different approach. In my mid-twenties I stepped into the mirror and spent a year in Chile—not in the Patagonia region, though I’ve traveled there many times— mainly in the town I mentioned earlier: the parallel universe around 34 degrees south latitude. I ended up buying a couple acres and building an off-the-grid house where I lived for many years, where I now sit writing the first half of this note, mere weeks ahead of my fortieth birthday, while my wife and 10-month-old daughter take a siesta upstairs. Though my life in Chile didn’t center on Patagonia, I’ve grown to know the place fairly well. Enough to know it is beyond words. Still, I managed to wrangle some 1,500 of them (p. 30) in an attempt to bring it home, concentrating less on sightseeing and more on the magic. There’s an interesting local tie-in, too. Not surprisingly, it involves the Patagonia company. It is often said that the best part of travel is coming home. And to be sure, it is a great feeling—to hear the washing machine purr and lie in your own bed. But I disagree that returning to comfort and familiarity is travel’s highest reward. We’ve been back in the country for a week, and when I look at our daughter now I see more than cute. Her well of experience is immeasurably deeper, though you’d never know it; she still chews her toes and laughs hysterically at a sneeze. On some level, though, she’s gained a new perspective on the world and her place in it. Travel, I believe, is not so much about seeing new places, but about seeing everything with new eyes. I wouldn’t have said it at 35,000 feet (apologies to everyone on LAN Chile flight 600), but this trip will be among the great experiences of our little girl’s life. It will help form the person she grows into. Yes, coming home is nice. But I guess I believe more strongly in another cliché: Travel is the great educator. MATT KATZ, EDITOR MattK@VentanaMonthly.com

Out of the Wild

The term “eco-friendly accommodation” used to refer to a rustic lodge. Now it has new meaning, as the hospitality industry goes green. Predictably, hotels in San Francisco are leading the charge , and you don’t even have to fly to get there.

S

BY MARY SEQUOIA HAMILTON

Since Earth Day began in 1970, participation has steadily increased, making it the largest secular holiday in the world. Though traditionally held in April, it’s not unusual nowadays to catch wind of green events happening throughout the year. Green is the new black—fashionable in any season—and “earth day, every day” has become the mantra influencing every decision from food to vacations. So, if it’s a green getaway you desire and eco-conscious accommodations you seek, consider an ecology-based hotel within driving distance of Ventura County and in one of the most vibrant cities on the planet: The Orchard Garden Hotel in San Francisco. Located smack in the heart of the city, adjacent to the dragon gates of Chinatown, “The Garden,” as locals call it, is refreshingly affordable in spite of its swank modern design. Most impressive, however, is its prestigious LEED certification—a rigorous rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, that measures a building’s energy savings (on average, 30 percent less than comparable buildings). Built green from the ground up, it’s the first hotel in California (and only the fourth in the world) to receive this Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification. To put its status into perspective, it’s one of only seven hotels in the entire world to have the honor of LEED distinction, although the list is sure to

Passersby wouldn’t notice anything particularly “green” about The Orchard Garden Hotel (above and right), but the San Francisco property is California’s first generation of true ecofriendly hotels, built to the national standards of the U.S. Green Building Council.

grow rapidly in 2009 and beyond. "You no longer have to choose between being green or luxurious," says Stefan Mühle, the general manager of The Orchard Garden Hotel. "You can have all the amenities you’re accustomed to and still be green." The hotel’s 82 deluxe guestrooms and four elegant suites offer high-end perks including Egyptian cotton linens, a large screen flatpanel TV, spa style robes, CD and DVD players with surround sound, a minibar stocked with delicacies from champagne to M&M's, and an iPod docking station. Matching the quality of its amenities, the hotel’s environmentally-friendly programs offer chemical-free citrus-based cleaning products, a 100 percent tobacco-free environment, and San Francisco’s first key card energy control system—which shuts off the electricity when you leave the room. (Note: When you are soaking away in a luxurious bath of organic lavender-lemon bubbles and your hubby runs downstairs to the fitness center with the key card, you may be left fumbling around in the dark for that plush spa robe!) 16

Besides a spacious bathroom that was almost as big as the granny flat attached to our house in Ojai, the suite we stayed in was adorned with a rooftop terrace overlooking the city, a Greenopia resource book with an exhaustive list of nearby ecofriendly restaurants and businesses, a huge bouquet of flowers made from colorful twisted wires and polished gemstones (no water required), a complimentary box of gourmet chocolates, and a “theta brainwaves” music CD to induce sleep. Which, by the way, worked like a charm ... or was it the chocolates, or the relaxing hot bath? Intimate and eco-friendly, The Orchard Garden Hotel is a perfect spot for a dreamy green getaway. Rates start at $189. For more information, call 415.399.9807 or visit TheOrchardGardenHotel.com. v

Once upon a time in a land not so far away, the Ojai Storytelling Festival took audiences traveling through the “veil,” to the nearby Village of Tales.

Master storytellers such as Bill Harley (above) use everything from body English to giant butterflies to whisk listeners to imaginary worlds, as the oral tradition, which dates back to the beginning of humankind, continues to evolve.

BY AMBER LENNON

Before the days of jumbo planes and Internet flight finders, folks ventured outside their everyday lives through a different kind of travel. Huddled around fires or sipping tea beside the AM radio, stories were the vessels by which our imaginations traveled to distant lands and new experiences. The Village of Tales Ojai Storytelling Festival is a journey around the world in four days of vivid story and music. Every year at the beginning of May, when the days grow longer and warmer, people of all ages gather around professional storytellers at Libbey Park to take a unique trip. “The Libbey Bowl is a heavenly venue,” says Andy Irwin, who presented his tales at the Festival in 2008. “If you were inside the world of ‘A Midsummer’s Night Dream,’ this is where the dream would take place.” With a captivated audience tucked into a canopy of California oaks, storytellers weave listeners into their stories until the two are one fabric of experience. We become the hero or the victim, the loved or the lost, the villain or damsel; and we animate our experience through the characters described. The oral tradition has been our mode of transmitting cultural history and values since the beginning of humankind. One of the oldest and best-known storytellers, Homer, was believed to have sung the poetry of “The Odyssey” while playing the lyre. And within the story, Odysseus himself becomes a storyteller when he returns to Ithaca and is the very embodiment of distant lands through the stories he brings. At the Ojai Storytelling Festival, the talented tellers are like modern versions of Odysseus, and through their imaginative presentations we are

carried into the realm of myth, animal symbols, folktales, and the shared human condition. By the end of the four days, audience members have had the opportunity to become tellers and articulate their own stories through interactive workshops. “We are at a moment when we have leapt into the flame with our million distractions,” says storyteller Hobey Ford. “Story is a way for us to reconnect with our roots as humans.” Brian Bemel, the founder of Performances to Grow On, a nonprofit committed to bringing theater and performance art to Ventura County, first discovered the power of storytelling as a teacher when students “listened in a special way.” After attending the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tennessee, he invited storytellers to schools, and in 2000 created the Ojai Storytelling Festival with a handful of volunteers. Bemel’s motivation was simple. As he puts it, “In these high-tech times … it’s important to take time out to enjoy the simpler pleasures in life: a good story, a sense of community, a melding of cultures.” Since the Festival’s inception ten years ago, word has spread about the quaint town of Ojai hosting some of the most versatile storytellers in the world. Professional teller Patrick Ball refers to Ojai in ancient terms: “The early Celts would have described [it] as a ‘thin’ place, a place where the veil that separates our world from the other world is very thin, indeed. In other places, we storytellers often have to struggle mightily to push that veil aside. In Ojai, it moves with barely a breath.” The storytellers come from all manner of backgrounds, ethnicities, and

“In these high-tech times … it’s important to take time out to enjoy the simpler pleasures in life: a good story, a sense of community, a melding of cultures.” belief systems. Bemel selects tellers based on their ability to connect with audiences at the National Storytelling Festival. Their stories illuminate our inherent similarities while also demonstrating the diversity of our cultural experiences. They communicate lessons learned, inspiration, and loss. And sometimes they remind us of the plain humor of life. All travelers will be familiar with these themes. I learned firsthand that one shouldn’t take a crawling baby on a two-month home search to the cliff-laden Amalfi Coast. But while there, I connected with my Italian heritage in the family stories told by an old gardener in my grandmother’s hometown. Not to mention the hindsight humor of lugging suitcases up and down the stairs of il stazione di treno with a fussing baby strapped to my back. By hearing the tales presented in the past ten years of the Ojai Storytelling Festival, we have traveled much of the world—Cuba, Ireland, Japan, and the Cape Verde Islands off West Africa, to mention a few, as well as many of our own United States. Native Appalachian storyteller Donald Davis remembers, "I discovered that in a story I could safely dream any dream, hope any hope, go anywhere I pleased.” For your next journey, consider a four-day getaway to the land of imagination at the Village of Tales Ojai Storytelling Festival. v Ojai Storytelling Festival: VillageOfTales.org Performances to Grow On: PTGO.org Photos by Dean Zatkowsky or courtesy of Performances to Grow On MPARYI YL 2 0 0 9 A

Smooth Cruising

When a “staycation” feels too close to home but you don’t want to battle LAX, choose a cruise . In today’s rough economic waters, it may be the smoothest trip out there.

U BY IVOR DAVIS

Unless you’ve been hiding away in an Afghan cave for the past year, you know that the cruise industry has been sailing rough waters during these turbulent economic times. It’s a mess: Billionaires drop a billion or two and just plain folks watch their retirement accounts shrink before their very eyes. Since the latter are precisely the people who form the cruising base, adjustments are having to be made to right the ship. And therein lies an opportunity for the rest of us. Cruising is getting cheaper, with higher standards, and life at sea is becoming more comfortable by the day. If you choose carefully, you can have a luxurious week or two at sea for little more than it would cost to stay home, cook three

meals a day, and go out for an occasional evening’s entertainment. And you won’t have to pay valet parking. Recently, my wife and I bought a one-week cruise on the Norwegian Star out of San Pedro down to the Mexican Riviera— not something we would normally rush to do, but we were ready for a break and didn’t want the hassle of flying. (When did airports turn into refugee depots and planes become cattle trucks?) We found a price we simply couldn’t refuse—just over 500 dollars each—and drove the 80 miles from Ventura County to San Pedro, overjoyed that we didn’t have to confront LAX. For the Saturday-to-Saturday trip, the freeway was lighter than usual, and our walk from parking spot to ship ended up being

less than 100 yards. There were some 2,300 passengers on board, ranging from retired folk to large families. The first night, one of the two dining rooms was jammed, with kids dozing on the floor leading to the formal Versailles room. Not a good sign. Was this what we had signed on for, a free-for-all down-market holiday camp? Thankfully, once we got our own timetable sorted out we managed to avoid the crowds. The on demand “free style” dining means that you eat when you want, where you want, with whom you want at either of the public dining rooms. We mainly chose the Versailles for dinner because once the families cleared out, it was quiet, with elegant, friendly service. The menu is wide-ranging and diverse. The wine list was a good one, and on a couple of nights we popped into the martini bar before dinner. We never had a disappointing meal. The staff, made up of people from around the globe, was delightful. In their manners and 26

dress, they looked as if they should be the guests being served by the frequently sloppy passengers. This isn’t the Queen Mary III, but would it be asking too much for guests not to come to dinner looking like they were getting ready to swab the decks? We used the gym most days, sampled a few of the spa treatments, and enjoyed the quiet of the Asian-themed meditation lounges. The destination ports of Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta were quieter than usual, which was great for bargain shopping and sampling local food. There was plenty of time for disembarking, and we didn’t have to rush anywhere. There was only one problem that became something of an irritant. With the cruise lines feeling the economic pinch, they spend an inordinate amount of time pushing sales of rubbishy jewelry: cut-rate watches, art auctions, dry land tours, “tax-free” alcohol (a trip to Trader Joe’s would get you better liquor bargains). We found our own way to downtown markets and beachside

The Versailles room (left) boasts fine dining, yet the author and his wife found the highlight of their trip during a shore excursion in Mazatlan, stumbling upon a symphony orchestra rehearsing at the 19th century Angela Peralta Theater (right).

cafes. In Mazatlan, an art festival was underway at the restored old colonial town and we sat in the 19th century opera house, the Angela Peralta Theater, as a youth symphony orchestra rehearsed for an evening concert. It was the highlight of our trip. Now, a few tips: Do pay a little extra for a balcony. It is a wonderful place to sit with a cocktail watching the arrival in and departure from ports of call, and it provides a nice retreat with a book or a snack when the sea of humanity becomes too much. And do, by all means, take in the many and varied live entertainment shows provided. On our trip, the dancers in the big production shows were excellent, some of the specialty performers were world class, and if the entertainment director’s cockney accent (a poor man’s Ricky Gervais) was driving us crazy by the end of the cruise, we’re sure some of the passengers found it charming.

We encountered the biggest downer of the trip back in San Pedro, where we arrived at 9 a.m. well fed and rested. We walked to our car, and were then trapped in a horrendous 90-minute traffic jam—before ever leaving the parking lot. Apparently, the parking company had only one person manning the three exits. Some friends missed their plane connections, and the parking incompetence brought back much of the stress we had dumped on our cruise. But who said life is perfect? v Ivor and Sally Davis booked their trip with Jeremy Hayes at Cruise Experts: 888.804.2784, CruiseExperts.com. GIVING BACK

The Other Patagonia Thousands of miles from Ventura, the South American continent dissolves into the sea. But before the end of the world there is Patagonia.

A BY MATT KATZ

All wilderness areas are spectacular, but some leave a more lasting impression than others. Patagonia is one that burns deep into the senses. It is unforgettable. On rare evenings when the weather in Patagonia cooperates, a curious glow spills like cold honey over the land. Towering volcanoes jut up from the amber hue so shockingly picturesque, so perfect and whitecapped with snow that they look like a mirage. And then they’re gone. Just like that. Reclaimed by the forces of nature that helped create them. Nothing is constant in Patagonia. Nothing, that is, except the wind. Not a breeze—a wind: a rip-your-face-off howler that blows birds about like autumn leaves and bends trees until they grow horizontally, rendering twisted landscapes straight out of Dr. Seuss. The place has an otherworldly presence. So much so that locals tend to speak of it as a beloved person rather than a geographic locale. “I always felt myself stifling as soon as I left the great forests, the timberland that drew me back like a mother,” wrote the Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, who was born in the region. “My life is a long pilgrimage, always returning to the forest lost in me.” Its remoteness has made Patagonia a land of myths and legends, a South

American Timbuktu or Shangri-la. To be sure, Yvon Chouinard nailed it when he named his Ventura-based company after Patagonia. This is more than a place; it is the essence of wilderness: overwhelming yet fragile, captivating, mystical, perfect when left alone. Never a precisely defined region, Patagonia is shared by two countries, Chile and Argentina. Depending on whom you talk to, it encompasses roughly everything south of Río Colorado and the eastern portion of Río Bío Bío, a territory equal to the combined surface areas of Texas and California. But to simplify matters, just think of it as the entire southern cone of the South American continent, that thin dangle of land at the bottom of the world. Trying to pin Patagonia down to a distinct identity is futile. On top of the divergent nationalities there’s the terrain: an array of temperate rainforests, arid plains, glaciers, fertile valleys, and sub-Antarctic nether lands. Capture Patagonia in words? Impossible. I lived in Chile for nearly a decade and have been to the Great South numerous times. Yet the place bewilders me. This is finis terrae, the uttermost ends of the earth. I can’t say I know Patagonia, but I can say that I feel an imposing sense of insignificance when I’m there, as if the whole of mankind had suddenly ceased to exist. It is a wonderfully lonely place.

Like the American West of old, Patagonia is home to a variety of landscapes. Clockwise from top left: The Lakes District of Chile; the future Patagonia National Park, Conservación Patagonica's major focus project; the iconic cuernos of Torres del Paine.

Puerto Montt is the transport hub and access point to wild Patagonia. Settled by German colonists in the mid-19th century, the small city with its middleEuropean architecture and mixed bag of inhabitants strikes an incongruous balance between distinct ethnicities; like many southern regions of South America, it lacks any vestige of cultural coherence. Geographically, Puerto Montt and its environs morph into familiar territory for nearly everyone: Americans see the Pacific Northwest; Japanese cry out “Fuji!” when the snowcapped cone of Osorno Volcano appears; Germans are so at home here they’ve developed a regional language, Laguna Deutsch, or Lake German. It is, in some ways, an intriguing place. But in the scheme of things, Puerto Montt is merely a foyer leading to the grand ballroom. And the ballroom is beyond words. I won’t try to summarize Patagonia. Maybe if I just share an experience from one of my trips. It happened during a two-day ferry crossing between Puerto Montt and Bariloche, Argentina. We were pushing east across Lake Todos Santos (sometimes called Lago Esmeralda for the blue-green of its glacial waters), knifing through the fog in a region where waterways are the only navigable link to civilization. Midway through the crossing, in the proverbial Middle of Nowhere, the sky suddenly cracked open. The shroud of fog lifted miraculously from the lake, C O N T I N U E D O N PA G E 3 5

unveiling an arena of mountain peaks. Snow came to rest on the branches of native trees all around—coigüe, raule, and araucarias with their peculiar “monkey puzzle” form. Then the most remarkable thing happened: a child appeared. A little girl, maybe eight years old, emerged from the impenetrable darkness of the coigüe forest. There she stood, at the edge of a lake stretching between two countries. The trees dwarfed everything around them. The mountains above the trees were so tall they soared out of sight into their own clouds. And she was so small. The effect was extraordinary. I watched as a deckhand passed her the family mail and what I took to be a box of supplies. She waved at the captain. Then she disappeared nonchalantly into the woods, making her way home. There’s a famous Neruda poem where he writes about his origins, saying, “I come from below, from the earth.” Now it made sense.

Clockwise from top left: Native trees being cultivated at Parque Pumalín; woodsy cabins provide haven for visitors to the nature sanctuary; Patagonia's flora ranges from lush ferns to dry grasslands, where indigenous animals such as these guanacos graze.

With such a powerful presence, it’s no wonder that adventure travelers revere Patagonia the way they do, and why the greatest change blowing through the region in recent years has been an influx of foreign investors. Big name Americans including Sylvester Stallone, Ted Turner, and Michael Douglas have bought properties, lured by the open-air milieu. But not everyone buys land in Patagonia to play cowboy. Doug Tompkins, the founder of North Face and Esprit clothing companies, purchased the equivalent of a small country in Chilean Patagonia during the 1990s with the intent of preserving one of the planet’s great remaining temperate rain forests. He set about establishing a natural sanctuary called Parque Pumalín, and planned to ultimately donate the park to a private foundation administered by Chileans. The grandiose display of eco-altruism was, however, simply too big, too new at the time for most Chileans to grasp. The national response went beyond skepticism into the realm of the bizarre. Tompkins has been accused of everything from gringo imperialism to setting up a nuclear dump. I have otherwise rational Chilean friends who are convinced he is a Nazi establish-

ing a colony in their southern boondocks. Meanwhile, Chile’s neoNazis (who do in fact have a presence in Patagonia) somehow converted Tompkins to Judaism and accused him of importing Israeli commandos. Though economic conglomerates with interests in lumber, mining, energy, and fishing have waged a campaign of antiTompkins propaganda over the years, many Chileans and Argentines have come to embrace the idea of preserving wild lands by purchasing them outright. The once-wacky concept meanwhile has jumped to the next level, and led to the permanent protection of millions of acres in both countries. In 1993, Tompkins married his old friend Kristine McDivitt, who worked closely with Yvon Chouinard to start Patagonia, Inc. and was, for many years, the company’s CEO. As Kristine Tompkins, she’s taken grand-scale conservation to new heights in South America, creating a nonprofit organization called Conservación Patagonica (formerly known as the Patagonia Land Trust), which buys, protects, and restores wild lands in the Patagonia region. As you’d expect, Ventura’s namesake company—with its mission to act as a model for corporate responsibility and change—is involved. Yvon Chouinard and his wife, Malinda, are on the Board of Trustees of Conservación Patagonica, and local Patagonia company employees travel in small groups to assist with the grunt work of creating new national parks: digging out fence posts, rolling up wire, removing nonnative plants. It’s not the sort of thing most people travel to do. But then, Patagonia has never drawn your typical pleasure traveler. It beckons subtly from the lower edge of maps and the bottom of globes, hovering over the Antarctic void as though it could snap off at any moment and melt like ice. And metaphorically speaking, it could; overgrazing, overfishing, and deforestation are just a few of the ways the region is being manhandled. While environmental philanthropists including the Tompkins duo and the Patagonia company have made significant progress, effectively preserving huge chunks of wild nature, less than five percent of Patagonia is currently protected by any type of conservation plan.

Top to b ottom: Conservación Patagonica has already created one national park, in Argentina, protecting hundreds of thousands of acres of Patagonian habitat; glacier watching in the deep south; araucaria, or "monkey puzzle," trees overlook one of the many lakes in Chile’s 10th Region.

It has been several years since my last trip to Patagonia. Not long ago I read that the annual number of visitors to Torres del Paine, the iconic national park in southern Chile, had nearly tripled since the mid-1990s. Other than that I don’t know much. I, too, was just a visitor, “passing through one of primitive nature’s great cathedrals,” as Neruda put it. The last time I saw Patagonia was, incongruously, through the acrylic plastic of an airplane window. There was a ghostly ribbon of smoke climbing out of the forest folds below, and I remember thinking of that little girl down there somewhere—the way she just appeared at the edge of Lake Todos Santos, how she blended effortlessly back into the shadowy labyrinth of coigüe trees. Her existence is the essence of Patagonia, I think. It is life cut thin and stripped of all the hucksterism and fabricated busyness of modern society. Patagonia puts things in perspective. It will brand your soul and change you forever. v

It beckons subtly from the lower edge of maps and the bottom of globes, hovering over the Antarctic void as though it could snap off at any moment and melt like ice.

For more about Conser vación Patagonica, visit ConservacionPatagonica.org. Information about Parque Pumalín can be found at ParquePumalin.cl. Patagonia’s company headquarters and main retail store are located in Ventura at 235 W. Santa Clara St. See Patagonia.com or call 805.643.6074.

Building a ring for a client often requires I jump through hoops to get to the right answer. For this client there were 7 versions of this ring before I was satisfied with one to show her. The style for her had to be sleek, modern, highly evolved and fully adorned - but without the gingerbread of tiny diamonds everybody seems to be tossing on every surface these days. This design has a wide shank at the bottom to keep the ring comfortable and centered on your finger, yet it stretches and grows as it reaches around your finger and upward. The Cinnamon-Champagne Natural Color Diamond sparkles like a Diamond should, but its warm color provides the perfect balance for the hot red of the Ruby. Two small white Diamonds are set into contrasting white gold providing a visual anchor for the diamond and ruby. Each design project is built to fit the client. One client said that I don’t build what’s new, I build what’s next!

May I build what’s next for you? Bob Lynn
