Twenty Years since the Fall of the Berlin Wall The German Embassy in Doha organised an exhibition at Landmark Mall from November 15 to November 21, 2009 under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture, Arts & Heritage.

T

his event took place in the framework of the ‘German-Qatari Cultural Weeks 2009’ organised by the German Embassy and its partners and sponsors: Q-Tel, Lufthansa, Deutsche Bank, NBK Automobiles (Mercedes), Alfardan AutomobilesBMW, Saad Buzwair Automotive-AUDI-and VW, Mövenpick Towers & Suites, Marriott Hotel, Mercure Grand Hotel Doha, Grand Hyatt Doha, Villaggio Shopping Mall, Landmark Shopping Mall, Waqif Art Center, I love Qatar and PLEON Qatar. On August 13, 1961 the government of former Eastern Germany started building this gigantic construction with 300 watchtowers to stop their people from fleeing to the West. 12,000 soldiers were on service there. Overnight the wall closed off all links with the west. The SED-government called the Berlin Wall an ‘antifascist protection wall’. The border with the Federal Republic of Germany became a ‘death strip’. During the next 29 years many people lost their lives trying to cross it. The ‘peaceful revolution’ not only describes the fall of the Berlin Wall on 09 November 1989, but a multitude of preceding incidents in the former GDR which finally lead to the non-violent overthrow of the 40-year long SED-dictatorship and which ended in the fall of the dividing wall. 1989 was not only an important year in the

their freedom, after long years of totalitarian regimes. The GDR, Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia and Hungary were now able to take their future into their own hands. In the years to follow this new independence was to become the catalyst for the development of European relations as well as triggering the collapse of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, consequently ending communism in Europe. To mark the 20th anniversary of this occasion the city of Berlin is organizing several events, one of which is the domino-campaign. 1.30 metre high replicas of Berlin Wall (designed by students) are to be placed next to each other to make a 2-kilometre long wall. On the evening of November 9th, they will be symbolically overturned to fall like a row of dominos. The Goethe-Institute is engaged in this project as well. In May 2009 and under the theme ‘the journey of the wall’, the Institute has sent 20 such stones to Palestine, Yemen, Israel, Korea, Mexico and Cyprus to awaken public perception on still existing walls around the world. Students, artists and intellectuals there participated in designing the stones and on 30th September they arrived back in Berlin where they will be placed together with the other stones to create the replication of the Berlin Wall. hafallah Centre for Children with Special Needs in consortium with Landmark Mall organised a day out for 40 children and its staff members under the aegis of Shafallah’s Post School Community Program recently. This celebration marked the end of semester for its first graduating class. Shafallah is a Centre of Excellence that provides comprehensive services and care to individuals with developmental learning challenges, their families, and the community. It nurtures the acquisition and application of unique skills and talents through the commitment of a dedicated team of professionals. The young adults took a trip of Carrefour accompanied by their mentors. They were very excited and elated exploring all the products and shopping for themselves. This tour aimed at acquainting them with shopping and money handling skills-concept and value of money, monetary exchange; and to feel comfortable with the routine life equipments and services -using ATM machines, use of escalators and elevators, identifying symbols for men and women toilets, directions, and managing their behaviour in public.

orrence Royer, Coordinator of Post School Services at Shafallah indicated that about 200 children will be graduating from the Centre over the next five years. He said that the main challenge for the Post School Community Service Program is in getting jobs for these young adults and integrating them with the community. This after school support program aims at developing and sustaining the vocational skills acquired over their four years of schooling. Referring optimistically on the future of these young people as satisfied adults, he commented that private firms as well as government agencies are being very supportive in hiring them. They are hired primarily for basic office support and jobs that have concrete task and result. Siddiqua Darwish, handling administrative work and a social worker with Shafallah stresses on the importance of equipping the children with special needs with skills that help them in not just performing within the centre’s purview but also enable them to participate successfully in the community as independent individuals.

Spring summer collection 2010 Established in 1969, New Look is one of the largest fashion wear retailer in the UK and number one denim and footwear retailer, with an average consumer age of 29. The retailer now has 612 stores in the UK, 25 in France and Belgium, 1 in Russia and a further 300 in France and Belgium trading as MIM. pring -Summer offers a more relaxed take on this decade’s skinny jean obsession as full on skinny fades to a slim, straight cut in brights as well as blue hues. Denims are faded and washed to achieve that worn quality across both jeans and outerwear. Smart casual is the way forward, paying homage to the 1950s all American boy. White Ts turn up jeans and chinos, denim beach boy cut offs and longer line shorts are back- all perfect with the updated boat shoe. Colours are muted and simple. A sleek beige jacket is a must grab along with the chino worn in a variety of ways spanning clean chic to harder edged utilitarian feel.
