"Ekikrta believes that great architecture is not created with the ambition to make its mark. But with the desire to establish a change, even small, with every person who will come in contact with it."

Nayak’s House

Site

Brief The site sits in the midst of dense vegetation and in an up-development zone, facing towards the road on the east side Given the dense vegetation in and around the site and the trees in front of the site, integrating nature and the trees into the design was the foremost priority.

Site plan The site is located in a residential zone with few adjaant and upcoming residential buildings. Given the geographical location of Bhuwaneshwar, which experiences temperate climate, exposed to extreme summers and winters and strong hot and cold wind currents from the south-east and south west. Given these factors the design incorporated strategies to acheive the optimized thermal comfort range inside the house all throughout the year, which is illustrated in the Conceptual Massing section (pg 12)

Conceptual Massing

The following diagrams illustrate the ideas to acheive a sustainable design and also to meet the clients spatial requirements while keeping the privacy intact.

12 |

(dig. 1) Incorporating the tree present in the site into the design process as it will act as a natural barrier to high wind gust which Bhuwaneshwar experiences.

(dig. 2) Excavating and lowering the ground level by 1 metre, which will become the basement level to accquire the spatial requirements.

(dig. 3) Services block (in orange) which connects the floors. And north end of the site is raised and filled with earth (in brown) which becomes the outdoor/ garden area which connects the living areas inside the house from level 1. Outdoor provision for the tree has also been made which forms into a small garden space.

(dig. 4) Above the basement level the house is split into two levels. Level 1 (in green) which consists of public spaces (eg. living room, ktichen etc.) and connects to the raised platform on the north end of the plot, which serves as an outdoor garden sapce. Level 2 is kept private for bedrooms.

(dig. 5) Internal double height spaces are provided to circulate the air inside the house to maintain the optimal thermal comfort and ventilation.

(dig. 6) Level 2 comprises of an outdoor courtyard which opens to sky above is connected to the Living/bar on level 2.

(dig. 7) The south side of the house comprises of a double wall with minimal openings to provide efficient insulation and to neutralize the strong heat from sun and winds in summer and also neutralizes the cold winds effect in the winters. The double wall also projects a meter and a half out to make a strong design statement and the presense of the hosue in the area.

(dig. 8) The maximum openings (in blue) are provided on the north and east side to get the diffused natural light into the interior spaces all throughout the day, which will subside on the electric light usage. And also gives a visual connection to the green spaces in the house. Punch in the courtyard adjacent wall has been made to bring the natural light right into the heart of the house.

14 |

(dig. 9) Floor projects out on Level 2 to form a balcony space (in yellow), which connects both living/bar and courtyard spaces. The balcony comprises of a perforated brick wall to provide privacy to the interior spaces from the adjacent residential properties.

(dig. 10) Terrace (in yellow) is provided with a terrace garden towards the east side.
