“A Repeal of Obamacare is Morally Wrong” By: Jay W. Lee, MD, MPH, FAAFP, Chief Medical Officer at Venice Family Clinic I stand with Venice Family Clinic and 500,000 family physicians, pediatricians, internists, obstetricians and gynecologists, and osteopathic physicians to protect coverage and health care access by repairing, not repealing, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare. Working in a community health center is more than a job — it’s a calling. Each year, we serve 24,000 low-income people residing in Los Angeles, including 7,000 children and their families and 3,500 people experiencing homelessness. As a cornerstone of medical services for Angelenos in need for nearly 50 years, we bear witness every day to the tragic health and economic consequences of inadequate insurance coverage or complete lack thereof. Our work is difficult and gritty; we do our best to maximize health in spite of the fractured, tiered health system that existed long before the passage of Obamacare. Did you know that thanks to Obamacare, community health centers have expanded to serve 1.4 million people in Los Angeles County? That’s nearly the population of Phoenix, Arizona. To meet this demand, the healthcare sector added 63,000 jobs. During this time, Venice Family Clinic increased its workforce by 20%, adding 50 people to our payroll. This has allowed us to expand clinical services and expand the scope of how we serve our community.

Obamacare Provides Economic Predictability Did you know community health centers rely on a volatile mix of federal and state funding, public and private grants, and philanthropic donations? In our nearly 50year history, we have experienced boom and bust years. Obamacare brought us predictability. Instead of living year-to-year, we have been able to plan better.

Obamacare Saves Lives Did you know as many as 45,000 preventable deaths are linked to lack of health care coverage every year? Before Obamacare, I remember the heartache of caring for patients who didn’t have health insurance or who had inadequate health coverage. People died. Health care is human. Health care is not a transaction. Health care is relational and continuous. If Obamacare is repealed, lives will be lost. Playing with people’s health and lives for political gain is unacceptable. A decision for repeal is morally wrong. The current political landscape has not changed Venice Family Clinic’s mission to provide quality primary health care to people in need. In fact, it only strengthens our resolve to live up to this moral standard. Still, we need support from our friends and neighbors to ensure health care stays a top priority. Let’s build on the successes of Obamacare, not dismantle all the gains that have been made. Please use your voice and share our story with Congress. Choose to be at the table with us, not allowing our patients to be on the menu. Exercise your civic health. It’s good for you! Trust me — I’m a doctor. 2

Ella Fitzgerald at 100 On April 25th we celebrated the 100th birthday of jazz legend and philanthropist Ella Fitzgerald. Before her death in 1996, Ella founded the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation to use the fruits of her success to help people of all races, cultures and beliefs. Venice Family Clinic is fortunate to have the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation as a partner for over 20 years. In addition to generous financial support, the Foundation donates approximately 8,000 children’s books to our Pediatric Literacy Program annually, allowing us to offer books, literacy education and outreach to our families. By providing books to children and by demonstrating the joy and value of reading, our Pediatric Literacy Program helps prepare children for school and for a healthy life. Happy Birthday, Ella!

Matthew Quan, Lead Clinic Assistant & Special Events Volunteer Matt helps the clinic in every way that he can. On one hand, he works to coordinate a VIP Artist Studio Tour to fundraise. On the other, Matt volunteers as a Lead Clinic Assistant and directly serves our patients by taking vitals, supporting the medical staff, and training new clinical volunteers.

Brighton Gives Back VFC thanks #BrightonGivesBack for allowing us to be part of their October event. The local Marina del Rey store raised over $2,000 for patients challenged by breast cancer. A special thank you to our longtime supporter, Penny Akashi, and her entire team for making this giveback event so successful.
