We are proud to welcome our new Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Jay W. Lee! Before joining the leadership team at Venice Family Clinic, Dr. Lee was the Director of Health Policy and Assistant Program Director at the Long Beach Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program, as well as the Associate Medical Director of Practice Transformation at Memorial Care Medical Group. Now, we’re diving deeper into what brought him to health care and ultimately, to Venice Family Clinic.
Q: When did your passion for health care begin? A: As a young cellist, I became interested in health care while preparing a biographical report about Dr. Albert Schweitzer, who inspired me with his love of medicine and music. My passion for serving patients and communities solidified later as a young adult when I worked as a medical volunteer for a non-governmental organization in post-war rural El Salvador in the mid-1990s.
Q: Why did you choose to specialize in Family Medicine? A: When I imagined the kind of physician I wanted to become, I envisioned myself modeled after a country doc who serves his patients and his community, embodying the 4 C’s of primary care: healthcare delivery that emphasizes First Contact and is Continuous, Comprehensive, and Coordinated. I also wanted to be fluent in the application of technology for the care of patients. Family Medicine allows me to practice that robust mix of the Marcus Welby-ian country doc and the Steve Jobs-esque technologist.
Q: As our new CMO, how do you envision Venice Family Clinic’s future? A: I believe our future is bright. As the Affordable Care Act matures, we have an opportunity to transform how we deliver high-touch and high-tech primary care to people in need. I have been impressed with how innovative Venice Family Clinic has been over the years and I plan to continue building that culture of continuous improvement in and across our clinic sites together with our frontline staff.
Q: What about Venice Family Clinic inspires you? A: The people and their shared commitment to provide quality primary care to those in need facilitated by their capability to dream big, get stuff done, and know how to have fun doing it. I’m meeting staff members who have worked 35+ years with us or who drive from 60+ miles away, each way, to get to work because they believe in the mission of the Venice Family Clinic. How could you not be inspired?
Q: Now for some fun: if you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would you go? A: Hokkaido – the northernmost and least developed of Japan’s four main islands. #BecauseFood #BecauseNature

Moving, Healing, Smiling We are so excited to announce the completion of our Irma Colen Health Center expansion project! This new space represents the culmination of years of work to create a comprehensive family wellness complex in the Mar Vista community. Starting this fall, patients and community members will have access to a permanent home for dental care, pharmacy services, health education, exercise, and Children First/Early Head Start programming. Flip to the center spread for an inside peek at the expansion!
100 prescriptions will be filled per day, per pharmacy staff “Commuting to another location for a prescription can be exhausting. The new pharmacy is more convenient for our families, and we can troubleshoot any medicine issues right away with a patient’s on-site medical team.” – Sharon Ng, VFC Director of Pharmacy
Venice Family Clinic’s dental visits will DOUBLE “Quality dental care is one of the most urgent unmet health needs among low-income children in our area. Through this site, we’ll be able to serve 2,400 additional patients.” – Dr. Nicole Thompson-Marvel, VFC Dental Director
2,500 people will utilize health education “I grew up a few blocks away, and never imagined that one day there would be a one-stop wellness complex just around the corner. I’m proud to be a part of such a dynamic and progressive health center! ” – Cristina Perez, VFC Health Education Volunteer
440 parents, infants and toddlers will be served through Early Head Start “Right now, Children First/Early Head Start only serves 1.5% of the current need. The expansion allows us to help more families, and prepare them to have successful and healthy lifestyles.” – Stacey Scarborough, VFC Director of Children First/Early Head Start

As the President and Principal Architect of Houston/Tyner, Russel Tyner has tackled hospitality, commercial, institutional and residential projects across the US and Canada, including at the Getty Museum and Universal Studios. He’s also a crucial part of Venice Family Clinic’s history and future. Russel, called “Russ” for short, has been the key designer and master planner for VFC’s core health centers since the 1980s. His projects have included the Milken Family Foundation Medical Building/Frederick R. Weisman Family Center, colloquially known as the Rose Clinic and the Administration Building; the interior of the Simms/Mann Health and Wellness Center; the Irma Colen Health Center; the Lou Colen Children’s Health and Wellness Center; and most recently, the Colen Health Center expansion. With each project, Russ goes above and beyond, always keeping our unique community in mind. “Through our designs, we want Venice Family Clinic’s patients to feel that they are being taken care of – not just medically, but psychologically and emotionally,” shared Russ. “My goal is to create refreshing, comfortable spaces that are light, bright and professional, but not sterile.” For his next VFC project, Russ is renovating his original building at the Robert Levine Family Health Center in the heart of Venice. Once completed, the clinic will radiate a warm and caring feel that will appeal to both teenage and adult patients alike. “We want our buildings to keep up with the times,” Russ said. “With each new design, Venice Family Clinic is setting a new standard for health center design that other clinics are seeking to adopt.” In addition to his architectural work for VFC, Russ has been involved with Venice Family Clinic’s Board since 1989. Now, he sits on the VFC Foundation Board. “I’ve enjoyed seeing the clinic’s progress, expansion and growth. It may look simple, but it’s been an incredible exercise in teamwork.” We can’t thank Russ enough for his incredible work and enduring support. Stay tuned for exciting updates in the coming months as his new projects break ground!
Anthem Blue Cross Gives Health & Holiday Cheer For the third year in a row, Anthem Blue Cross is joining Venice Family Clinic this December as the presenting sponsor of our annual Children’s Holiday Movie. At Children’s Holiday Movie, local lowincome children and their families experience a once-of-a-kind event, including a Hollywood style movie premiere, holiday gifts, music, treats and, of course, the chance to meet Santa Claus! With a generous $25,000 gift, Anthem Blue Cross helps provide health care to 500 of VFC’s pediatric patients and ensures over 1,200 children and their families have a day to remember.
Celebrating National Health Center Week From August 8-11 Venice Family Clinic celebrated National Health Center Week with free health screenings, a rotating speaker series, resource fair for homeless patients, voter registration, and a week-long coloring contest for kids. Special thanks to Alyssa Shinto of the National Association of Health Centers and Janet Turner, Field Representative for Congressman Ted Lieu for visiting! Also, a big “thank you” to SnapChat for donating clothing necessities for our homeless patients.
Help Promote Child Literacy! Our Pediatric Literacy Program volunteers are making a huge difference in waiting rooms, exam rooms, and classrooms by reading to our patients! The program educates families on the importance of reading together, while preparing children to enter school with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills. You can help keep this program going! We’re currently in need of children’s picture board books (age 0-2), Bilingual Spanish and English board books (age 3-5), kindergarten through 3rd grade reading level books (age 5-8) and/or Children’s Play Area furniture. Please contact VFCvolunteer@mednet.ucla.edu for further instructions on how to get involved – thank you for your support!
Charity Concert Benefits VFC
Dr. John Mafi and his band Nema, an emerging L.A. blues and rock group, generously hosted a Charity Concert Night for over 100 guests at Rosenthal Wines. Attendees bid on silent auction items, enjoyed delicious offerings by The Deli Doctor and raised over $2,500 for VFC!
Remembering Gail Margolis (1953-2016) Gail Margolis – an extraordinary health advocate, leader, mentor and friend who served on our Venice Family Clinic Board, Foundation Board and Emeritus Board – passed away on September 10, 2016.
