Chapter 2 HISTORY Pre-Historic and Ancient Bhutan Archeological artefacts reveal that Bhutan was inhabited 4000 years ago and ancient stone implements unearthed indicate settlements in Bhutan dating back to 2000-1500 BC. However, most of these records were lost to calamites; a fire in 1832 that ravaged the Punakha Dzong, the ancient capital; a massive earthquake in 1896 that struck the nation whichdestroyed structures that housed the ancient records, and another fire in Paro Dzong a few years later. Notwithstanding, a few records exist and from the available namthars (life stories of great people or hagiography) and artefacts from ancient monasteries, the prehistoric era of Bhutan can be traced back to 500/600 AD. Some of the early inhabitants of Bhutan practiced Bon, an animistic tradition that was the main religion throughout the Himalayan region before the advent of Buddhism.
