THE ART OF CONCENTRATES >>>

Srene - Crystal Peak - Verdi, NV

In today's industry THC and COA numbers are often seen as the Holy Grail leaving actual quality on the table. Srene at Crystal Peak has a creative approach to concentrates that deserves recognition. We caught up with Srene to learn more about their company and process. Let's get lost in the sauce as they say and dive into the creative innovations over at Srene labs.

Stephanie Shehan: What is Sub-Critical CO2 and why does it matter?

Ryan Goin: Why haven't we seen this in the Nevada vape market before? Unlike anything you've purchased in Nevada, we created a one-off process for extracting. CO2 extraction is already a popular solvent free method but when the CO2 is chilled and extracted with low pressure rather than heated with high pressure, a new beast is born! Our Subcritical CO2 process is favorable because it preserves terpenes further and creates an authentic true to cannabis cartridge that is noticeable in increased taste, aroma and quality of the final product. Crafting this innovative feat took years of perfecting, from our custom made extraction equipment (see below) to the scientific process and final product that is currently on shelves today. We think it should matter a lot to anyone who purchases vape cartridges.

Srene’s finest house flower before the curing process begins. This allows the terpenes to stay fresh. Then we drop it into ice water. This breaks off the trichomes and we collect it with micron bags forming Ice water hash, aka bubble bag hash. We then dry and pack the ice water hash into bags. From here we squish it into the final product, Rosin, with a press. If you get a chance I'd recommend trying our Rosin. It really is a work of art.

SS: Do you have any other forms of concentrates available?

RG: Yes! We also have a popular Live Resin sauce and sugar that many have known and loved for years, as well as a tincture line that is currently being revamped.

SS: What does Srene stand for?

RG: We get this question a lot! Srene is an acronym for Strong, Redundant, Efficient, No Extension.

SS: I’m guessing there is more to this?

RG: Exactly. In 2017, the Srene name modeled after an anchor popular in the climbing community where our roots begin. Our mindset mirrors the approach one takes to the mountain. Liberal application of precision, patience and gratitude.

SS: Where are you located?

RG: Our products are located in most dispensaries in Nevada but our cultivation, production and kitchen facility sits within sight of Crystal Peak near Verdi, Nevada. We are blessed to have some of the prettiest views surrounding our facility.

SS: What's new at Srene that we should know about?

SS: Live Rosin, What's the hype?

RG: If you have dabbled in exotic concentrates lately then you have come across Live Rosin. People champion this concentrate for its purity and terpene-packed flavor. We knew that we wanted to tackle live rosin at some point, but superior quality would be a must. We are happy to announce we did just that. Our latest extraction “Ice Water Hash Live Rosin” just launched and I'd dare to say it is the most exquisite treat for any connoisseur.

SS: Do you mind sharing how it is made?

RG: The Cliffs Notes? Rosin is basically created by squeezing and heating flower mechanically. We first start our Rosin by collecting

12 Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014

RG: We have been busy over here at Srene. As you know we just launched our Live Rosin. Our flower is now available in jars at select locations. Our latest strain drops, Strange Haze and Daystripper are creating a buzz and disposable vapes are on the way! We are constantly innovating and creating new products so keep your eyes peeled.

SS: What words describe Srene?

RG: I’d say, holistic, innovative, and scientific.

SS: What separates you from other cannabis companies?

RG: Great question. With many companies/brands entering the Nevada cannabis industry, it's hard to tell what differentiates the products behind the branding. Who are they? Do they care? Srene has been creating pure, high quality cannabis products in Nevada from the beginning all while perfecting our processes along the way. Not only can you trust our products to be safe but you can count on them to be the highest quality available. We pride ourselves on pure intentions, strong partners and the long lasting effects of positivity!

WHY THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY?

Besides being passionately obsessed with cannabis concentrates and extracts, I believe I have always been intrigued by the cannabis industry because it is the embodiment of what I perceive as the current day American Dream. The opportunities and potential upside that exists within the cannabis industry are hard to find elsewhere in modern day American society and the cannabis industry tends to not be bound by most of the limitations of other more wellestablished traditional industries. In addition to the advantages of the nontraditional nature of the cannabis industry, the cannabis industry has also provided me with a unique platform for self-expression through the art of extraction.

WHAT WAS LIFE LIKE BEFORE CANNABIS?

For the most part, I have exclusively worked in the cannabis industry for the greater portion of my adult life. I “formally” started working in the cannabis industry in 2016, while I was attending my last year at the University of California San Diego. Knowing that I wanted to pursue a professional career in cannabis, I obtained employment at two medically licensed retail stores near the campus during my last semester of college. I worked as a security guard at one location and in a budtender position at the other dispensary. Working these positions allowed me to network with a variety of community members and acquire a position as an extraction tech and later, lab manager for a company that is now one of the top-ranking connoisseur cannabis flower brands. Prior to formally working in the cannabis industry, I worked as a solar energy systems engineer for one year during my sophomore year of college.

HOW DID YOU LAND IN NEVADA?

I am from San Diego and lived in SoCal since childhood or up until relocating to Vegas. I have always considered Vegas my second home given that a large portion of my family has always resided in Las Vegas but did not officially relocate to Nevada until the Summer of 2018.

WHAT LED YOU TO EXTRACTING?

I started making bubble hash and other more traditional types of cannabis concentrates for some time prior to butane/propanebased types of extracts becoming popularized. Very early on in my cannabis journey, I discovered a sense of fulfillment and enjoyment in various hash making processes - I would find myself practicing the craft whenever possible due to the gratification it brought

about. Additionally, always having been a cannabis connoisseur, I believe that I became immensely captivated with cannabis hash because it also enabled me to be able to communicate the nuances of different cannabis strains in a manner that raw cannabis flower occasionally lacked. Without doubt, a deeper understanding of and connection to cannabis plant resins was forged by learning various hash/concentration processes which inspired my pursuit in the art of cannabis extraction. Ultimately my passion for making bubble hash or cannabis concentrates, coupled with a natural technical skillset, eventually evolved into an affinity for cannabis extracts and a passion for the craft/art of cannabis extraction as butane hash oil and other types of extracts became more sought after and readily produced.

FAVORITE PART OF BEING AN EXTRACTOR?

When producing cannabis extracts or working with cannabis plant material there is, to a degree, an element of surprise that always exists. This ongoing element of surprise makes the day-to-day work/extraction outcomes consistently exciting and fulfilling. Every batch of cannabis plant material is different or unique - regardless of how dialed in your processes might be; there will always exist a range of variance in the possible outcomes that cannot be manipulated. The only way to find out the significance of such uncontrollable factors is by getting to the end of the extraction process. This degree of inability to have full control I find to be addictively motivating and continuously challenging in a unique sort of way. Additionally, practicing the craft of cannabis extraction also allows for me to engage in a form of expression that is truly unique to who I am. Last of all, I gain a great sense of accomplishment in knowing that the products I am personally creating also can help others or provide relief for those who are suffering from various medical conditions or illnesses.

WHAT TYPES OF CONCENTRATES DO YOU MAKE?

Taproot currently produces a wide variety of cured and live extract consistencies such as: Sugars, Badders, Crumbles/Honeycomb, Shatters, Sauces, Terp Diamonds, and strain specific RSO. Taproot also has a variety of tincture blends that differ based on effects and a wide range of vape products or vape product lines that are created out of ingredients derived only from cannabis.

WHAT SETS TAPROOT CONCENTRATES APART?

The extraction team at Taproot utilizes advanced extraction methods to create a variety of high-quality artisanal extract product types. The advanced processing methods enables complete fractionation of the cannabis oil being processed. This in turn allows for the highest quality portions of the extract to be separated and conserved. Taproot’s products are also designed with a holistic approach in mind – all product types and ingredients are derived from cannabis only and no artificial or synthetic ingredients are used. Lastly, integrity and pride are not only core company values at Taproot but are reflected in the products manufactured by the production team- every product is made with passion and no shortcuts are taken in any of the production processes.

ANYTHING NEW IN THE WORKS?

Taproot is in the process of launching a new edible line that will be

released under the Roots brand. These products are designed with a health-conscious approach in mind and many of the products will contain an array of different kinds of superfoods. This will be something you’ll definitely want to check out once available.

WHY THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY?

I was driven to the cannabis industry because of my passion for the plant and its many benefits.

WHAT LED YOU TO EXTRACTING?

I began my career at Deep Roots Harvest in July of 2017, and while I was learning extraction my passion grew even stronger for the cannabis industry. The many forms of concentrates, vapes and infused products were intriguing. I was motivated to truly understand the chemistry behind the processing and post-processing of cannabis oil, and learning the different machinery. I spent many hours researching ways to expand my knowledge and to get the best high-quality product. I guess you can call me a self-proclaimed lab nerd.

FAVORITE PART OF BEING AN EXTRACTOR?

My favorite thing about being part of the extraction team is the constant change, creating new products, striving for continuous improvements and the ability to learn new techniques. I also really enjoy learning new strains and how they need to be processed, as each strain is so unique and needs to be handled differently. Extraction is an art form, each handcrafted cannabis product here at Deep Roots Harvest is truly made with love!

WHAT TYPES OF CONCENTRATES DO YOU MAKE?

We are currently producing both live resin and cured resin concentrates, roughly around 9 different products. We also produce 14 different cannabis derived distillate vapes, liquid live resin vapes and infused prerolls. Some of our brands include Prospector, Gunslinger, Boom Town, and Fire Birds.

WHAT SETS DEEP ROOTS HARVEST CONCENTRATES APART?

I believe what sets Deep Roots Harvest apart from other brands is the passion, patience, and precision everyone on the extraction team brings to the table. We strip the flower of all its desirable compounds and further process it to get an even cleaner, more concentrated product. Our entire team is made up of passionate enthusiasts with the desire to experience and explore the purest essence of cannabis and we want nothing less for our consumers!

Why Concentrates?

Going into the dispensary can be overwhelming. There are many options to choose from and it is difficult to know what to buy for your individual goals, often leaving one to purchase only what they are familiar with. If this sounds like you, you are not alone. When I first gained access to legal cannabis for my health, I only bought the flower I knew would help me, and with a strict budget, I steered clear of trying anything else for a long time. Concentrates were one of the products I avoided. They seemed pricey for the little amount that you get, and I didn’t understand them. Now though, concentrates are one of my primary forms of cannabinoid medicine. Let’s take a deeper dive into concentrates and the many advantages they have compared to other forms of consumption.

First, what exactly are concentrates?

Concentrates are concentrated extracts of cannabis or hemp. They have high concentrations of various components of the plants, including cannabinoids and terpenes. Concentrates hold great therapeutic value and are superior in many ways. The following are the most prominent advantages of consuming concentrates.

High Cannabinoid Content

Concentrates have a higher cannabinoid content than the majority of cannabinoid-based products available on the market. For example, flower typically has 10% to 20% of THC or CBD, while concentrates have a 50% to 90% concentration of the cannabinoids. Primarily cannabis concentrates will be high in THC, and hemp concentrates will be high in CBD. However, there are also concentrates available with other valuable neutral cannabinoids, such as CBG and CBN. Having a higher cannabinoid concentration allows for greater therapeutic effects to be felt from consumers. Additionally, one will need less concentrate than compared to other products, as one is able to absorb more cannabinoids in a smaller dose.

Power of Terpenes

Terpenes are most known for delivering the taste and aromas of the cannabis products we consume; however, they are so much more than that. Terpenes hold great therapeutic value and allow one to get the experience they desire

from cannabinoid products. In addition to a higher cannabinoid content, concentrates also contain much more terpenes than any other products available on the market, elevating the experience for consumers. When you ingest high doses of terpenes, you are able to truly feel the effects the terpene has to deliver. For example, a high myrcene concentrate is great at relaxing the whole body and combating tight muscles; while limonene is a great terpene to reach for when stress and anxiety get overwhelming. The power of terpenes can be used to get the exact experience you want from the products you buy and of course, they make the product taste amazing as well.

Almost Immediate Effects

When taking cannabinoid products there are three main routes of administration to choose from. There are orally ingested cannabinoids, those we apply topically, and then inhalation. Though all routes have their advantages and can be beneficial, there is only one that achieves the most rapid delivery of cannabinoids to the body, inhalation. When smoking cannabinoids, one should feel the effects within 5 to 10 minutes, with the effects lasting 2 to 4 hours dependent on the individual. When using concentrates, it is best to wait 10 to 15 minutes between hits, to know how the product will affect you. Concentrates are great for those who want to feel the effects quickly and are ideal for patients managing breakthrough symptoms throughout their day.

Tips When Using Concentrates

If you are thinking that all sounds great, but, where do I begin? Then this next section is for you. When you buy your first concentrate it can be confusing on how to use it. There are many options available, including nectar collectors, dab/ wax pens, and dab rigs. Nectar collectors and dab pens are great for beginners as they simplify the process, and not many tools are needed. Additionally, concentrates can be sprinkled on your favorite flower to boost the therapeutic effects of the flower. When using this method, is it imperative you do not directly put the butane flame

on the concentrate, or it can diminish some of the terpenes and cannabinoids. A hemp wick is a great alternative to a lighter for this purpose. When using other options, using a lower temperature when smoking the concentrates is ideal to preserve the terpenes and cannabinoids. If the concentrate is burned at too high of temperatures, some of the therapeutic effects will be lost. Additionally, when using concentrates, sometimes we can ingest too much, and if it’s THC, it can induce uncomfortable euphoria. If you ever ingest too much THC and the “high” is unwanted, smoke some CBD to counteract the effects.

Concentrates can be a valuable addition to a cannabinoid routine. The elevated effects they can deliver can be felt almost immediately and though they are sold in “smaller” amounts compared to other products available, they pack a powerful punch. They are a great ally for those who need higher doses of cannabis or hemp to achieve the desired effects; and medical patients can gain valuable benefits from incorporating concentrates into their routine, from the symptom relief and therapeutic effects they can deliver, to needing less overall product to achieve the desired effects. One of the best parts about concentrates is that there have never been any severe side effects from consumption, so there is nothing to lose, yet so much to potentially gain.

Medicated Gingerbread Men

Ginger

The lovely ginger plant, with its elongated leaves and small flowers, is used for cooking and apothecary for its flavorful and beneficial root. Before it was known as a holiday treat, it was a favorite of Royal families for centuries.

Also known as a token of fertility and a tool for witches to exact vengeance. The gingerbread

originated from England. Queen Elizabeth I had gingerbread men made to look like visiting dignitaries, serving them up for her favorite courtiers. She enjoyed giving, what she called “ginger biscuits” as edible caricatures.

The first known recipe for gingerbread came from Greece in 2400 BC. Recipes were said to be created during the 10th century, after explorer Marco Polo brought ginger to the West from China. By the late Middle Ages Europeans had their own versions of gingerbread.

Daily Dose

man has a dark backstory, with a link to death and the demonic. The ancient gingerbread man was present in the Saturnalia, the Roman Winter Solstice celebration, with drinking, eating and carousing the norm. Man-shaped biscuits were offered up, representing human sacrifice as a gift to appease the Gods.

According to CrimeReads.com, as Christianity was accepted throughout the Roman empire, the carousing would eventually become caroling in the streets, and gift-giving via the Magi’s offerings to the Baby Jesus.

But the classic gingerbread man we know today, with his candy eyes and sugary smile

It’s believed that the recipe for the biscuit was initially invented by a monk to help cure digestion, as the flavorful root of ginger is medicinal. Ginger’s benefits include gastrointestinal motility, or the rate that foods exit the stomach and continue along the digestive process. In other words, eating ginger encourages efficient digestion, so food doesn’t linger as long in the gut, also providing relief with nausea.

Beneficial terpenes found in ginger are, Zingiberene, Bisabolene, Cineol, Geraniol, Linalool, Citral, Borneol, a-Farnesene, B-Phellandrene, and Curcumene - many of the same terpenes also found in cannabis.

According to a paper published in the US National Institute of Health, ginger is a 10 percent ethanolic ginger extract (alcohol/ solvent reduction) was found to have antimicrobial potential against pathogenswith another published article citing help with

COVID, respiratory ailments, and in lowering blood sugars in treating diabetes. In other words, ginger is another superfood or super plant, with many beneficial properties, also strengthening our immune system.

The making of gingerbread houses for Christmas began in Germany during the 16th century, built with elaborate walls, decorated with foil and gold leaf. Today, White House Chefs and the Royal Chefs at Buckingham Palace recreate the iconic buildings in gingerbread for the holidays.

The practice of making gingerbread houses was made popular after the fairytale Hansel and Gretel was published in 1812, wherein the two children found an edible house of gingerbread with sugar decorations - luring them into the witches' lair.

The recipe below is for a simple gingerbread biscuit, made using cannabis infused butter. The cookies would aid in a good night’s sleep, or to leave out for Santa as back pain relief (see Adventures with Santa, Vegas Strip)

Medicated Gingerbread Men

3 c. flour

2 t. ginger (dried and ground)

1 t. cinnamon

1 t. baking soda

¼ t. nutmeg

¼ t. salt

¾ cup cannabis infused butter, softened (recipe below)

¾ c. brown sugar, packed

½ c. molasses

1 egg

1 t. vanilla extract

Mix flour, ginger, cinnamon, baking soda, nutmeg and salt in large bowl

Beat butter and brown sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add molasses, egg, and vanilla; mix well. Gradually beat flour mixture on low speed until well mixed.

Press dough into a thick, flat disk. Wrap in

20 Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014
and its history of demons, healing, and holiday cheer

plastic wrap. Refrigerate for four hours or overnight.

Roll dough out on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of ¼ inch (dough will be tough to handle). Cut into gingerbread men shapes with a 5-inch cookie cutter. Place gingerbread men 1-inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet.

Bake in a preheated oven until edges of cookies are set and just begin to brown - 8 to 10 minutes. Cool on baking sheets for 1 to 2 minutes, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.

Easy Variation: Roll dough into 2-inch balls and roll into white sugar. Place 2-inches apart on an ungreased baking sheet, Use the bottom of a drinking glass to press cookies flat. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until the edges of cookies brown.

Cannabis Infused Butter

One pound or 4 sticks, or 450 grams of butter ½ oz. or 7 grams of dried, ground cannabis flower, stems, and leaves

Add all to a crock pot, set to warm. If the crock pot gets too hot or warm, stir often, or turn off to cool down, then repeat.

Should take 2-3 hours to infuse. Color should be a light green.

Too much chlorophyll will show up bright green and may dilute the beneficial compounds needed. For this reason, do not use a leaf-heavy trim.

Strain into small containers or silicone butter molds for easy measuring. Let chill in the refrigerator.

Fineprint: Cannabis resins bind very well to butter fat, and why I microdose recipes with minimal infused butter. For this recipe, I’d cut the infused butter in half or more, compensating with non-infused butter.

Ensuring a Safe Dispensary Experience

While dispensaries in Nevada resemble the interior of a sleek-looking Apple store, the average customer may not truly realize how extensive and thorough that retail cannabis security is required to be. Less of a boutique-level of security and possessing a level more of widespread multi-layered security. Every dispensary in The Silver State is required to have state-of-the-art security and protection as part of the strict regulations of Nevada cannabis.

Multiple 360-degree video surveillance systems on every entrance, exit and point of sale within the store, intrusion detection systems active in all interior and exterior areas, multi-leveled key card access systems for each area of the dispensary that dictate which employees have access to which parts of the facility and identification scanning technology that’s in use at most airports and government buildings. Most importantly, each licensed dispensary and cultivation facility are required to have electronic notification systems that send alerts directly to law enforcement in the event of any of the aforementioned security systems being triggered. Many dispensaries go even further and contract out third-party companies offering comprehensive security services to every aspect of dispensary or cultivation facility management and compliance such as Invictus International and Operational Security Solutions.

All of these measures may seem to be a bit overkill or overcautious to a dispensary customer not employed in the cannabis industry. But to industry professionals and those who have any experience in retail cannabis, the many layers of security systems are mostly necessary for a variety of reasons. Employee safety, ensuring that any documentation of unruly or difficult customers are detailed, prevent theft of the very expensive products and most importantly, protect the large amounts of cash kept in the dispensaries due to the

lack of proper financial services offered to legal cannabis.

For an award-winning dispensary as massively popular and frequented as Jardin is, an almost Fort Knox-level of high-tech security is needed to ensure that the store is being run properly and safely. Luckily for the staff and customers of East Desert Inn dispensary, Jardin employs a Director of Security with experience in security solutions and instruction certifications from such monumental organizations as Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), American College of Surgeons, OSHA and the American Red Cross.

From a young age, Jardin’s Director of Security Wyatt Robertson knew the importance of securing your property and home from a personal connection. Coming from a family of military and law enforcement members, Robertson’s family owned The Gun Store on Tropicana and Pecos until 2014 and frequently employed military veterans. Becoming familiar with firearms and security through both his family and from those who’ve bravely served, it was almost a given that Robertson would venture into working in the security solutions industry.

“It gave me a unique avenue to approach this industry from not having a military background but having similar training and capabilities because of the very obscure way of life that I grew up in with the business my family had and the classes and everything that they taught as a normal business.” Robertson recollected.

With a background as heavy in security and self-defense along with the numerous certifications that Robertson holds relevant to those fields, it’s natural that he ended up working for a company such as Invictus International, the prominent security solutions company offering their various services to dispensaries all across the Las Vegas Valley. Eventually reaching

the rank of Deputy Project Manager with the company, one of the dispensaries that Robertson was assigned to was Jardin. Around May of 2021, Jardin ceased using Invictus International and decided to take a more in-house approach to security and defense.

On the last day of Jardin’s contract with Invictus, Robertson was given the exciting offer to run the security team for Jardin. With this position and his illustrious professional experience, Robertson has utilized and perfected every layer of properly operating security for a largescale dispensary as famous and wellbranded as Jardin. To his credit, Robertson has become so esteemed for his expertise in dispensary security that he even received a distinct award this past July. While it’s certainly a different accolade than the Active Shooter certification with FEMA that Robertson also holds, he received the 2022 Vegas Cannabis Award for Best Security Officer.

As they’re usually the first layer of security for a hostile interaction with a customer, Robertson stresses that proper security measures begin with the employees themselves and the handling of the situation at hand.

“A heavy emphasis on the people aspect. De-escalation and mitigation are the biggest tools in the interim with a potential hazard.”

Second, Robertson spoke about the importance of “quantitative data” for security purposes. Although it may seem arduous and even unnecessary at times to Nevada cannabis employees working directly in inventory management, the many relevant inventory management regulations and practices such as Marijuana Enforcement Tracking and Compliance (METRC) that are required actually provide a great example of the “quantitative data” that Robertson mentioned.

24 Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014
>>>

“That’s the computers and METRCs and everything that we can calculate these days and especially the resources provided by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. We try to meet with them frequently. We have their crime prevention specialist teach classes to our staff and they’ve been a great community partner. We’re able to track crime trends. We’re able to track our sales data to determine how many people we should expect for staffing levels. We maintain high visibility and static postings as well as random roaming patrols.

It’s always going to be evolving to match the needs and the expectations based on historic and predictable data to give us the best solution.”

And as strange of a sight as it is for someone from such a Prohibitionist state as myself to see law enforcement being so supportive of retail cannabis with the services they provide Jardin, Sheriff and Governor-Elect Joe Lombardo actually once visited the store to see the large operation himself.

“By coming together with educated and trained staff that have proper approaches due to credentialed staff, it really helps build that relationship with our staff and LVMPD in regards to the fact that we’re not out here doing anything we’re not supposed to be. We operate within the confines of the law, there are body cameras for substantiating evidence and we’ve really been able to build a positive relationship. So whenever we put out a call for service, whether it be for any of the plethora of reasons we’d need to call them, they’ll be very responsive.”

From entering the front door, dispensary receptionists are the true first layer of security and compliance for a retail cannabis location. Robertson described how certified and experienced the receptionists at Jardin are at ensuring that this first layer of security is fool-proof.

“The biggest thing that you can’t overlook is going to be the personnel and the training. Even if customers may not see this, the receptionists go through an

extensive identification verification training. And we teach them on every domestic identification, licenses all the way to passports and permanent resident cards. The computers are efficient and they do provide certain layers but they’re not that hard to defeat if someone with the right knowledge knows how to fake a credential.

By using the trained receptionists paired with the technology, the efficacy of the verification is insurmountable compared to relying on a computer only.”

Even with all the innovative technology in the world, the most effective way to diffuse any potential incidents is verbal de-escalation. That’s achieved by professionalism and promising that cooler heads will always prevail.

“I’m very stringent on staffing when it comes to uniforms and the security aspect as well as that knowledge, background, training and education. It's been extremely successful and we’ve had close to a 90 percent incident drop when I took over and was able to start implementing those procedures. And it’s all based on that quantitative data that shows this type of approach is effective.”

Moreover, Robertson uses previous incident reports to better strengthen Jardin’s security operations in the handling of future incidents. Exactly what happened in the report, what deescalation tactics were used and how the employee finally

25 Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014

broke through and remedied the situation before it escalated. “We really continue to evolve and develop our approach with each and every experience, and it’s for all of us. It’s pivotal and not at all cookie-cutter and fits every situation.”

Although Nevada is the most heavily regulated of all of the Legal States, Robertson still finds several of the security-related regulations to be both incredibly useful and necessary for retail locations as cash-heavy yet frequently visited as dispensaries; the most notable of which being how stringent the identification verification system must be.

One security-related regulation that Robertson does find to be a little inconvenient at least is a regulation related to curbside pickup and minors being in the vehicle. When a dispensary customer chooses to do curbside pickup, there must be no one under the age of 21 also in the vehicle. If any minors are present in the vehicle, then the transaction can’t legally happen. For parents in particular, this regulation can be inconvenient if they don’t have a babysitter or family members to watch their children while they visit the dispensary.

Robertson agrees with the argument that this is somewhat overreaching, as no such law exists for pickup of alcohol within a grocery store where children aren’t allowed to be present during

purchase nor does a similar law exist for home deliveries. Oftentimes, this “no minors in the vehicle” rule results in the adults leaving their minors in the vehicle while they attempt to complete the transaction inside, which results in unattended minors and creates further security concerns.

Looking into the future, Robertson stresses how vital eventual federal legalization and further normalization will be for strengthening the security at retail cannabis locations. As proper banking services will finally be allowed for cannabis businesses, dispensaries won’t have the constant worries of being so cash heavy and the dangers that could come along with possessing such large amounts of paper currency.

On a personal note outside of my experience in the cannabis industry, I feel thankful towards Robertson and his security services, as some of Robertson’s private security work locations outside of Jardin are at various Jewish day schools and synagogues across Las Vegas such as Chabad of Henderson. One such location, Temple Young Israel Aish HaTorah off Sahara, is the synagogue I regularly attend Shabbat services at. With the rate of antisemitism and anti-Jewish hate crimes rising sharply across the country to a concerning yet sadly familiar level for Jewish people, we’ll always be thankful for brave and caring people such as Robertson who keep our communities safe.

Embracing Cannabis with Palliative Care

“You matter because you are you, and you matter to the last moment of your life. We will do all we can, not only to help you die peacefully but also to (help you) live until you die”

Hospice Movement

Are you or a loved one living with a life-threatening illness? Will that loved one be residing in a palliative care facility or choose palliative care at home? Have you thought about, or even heard of, using cannabis products for symptom management?

The goal of Palliative care is to enhance the quality of life for those patients living with incurable or terminal illness. Medical cannabis (MC) is and has been utilized in palliative care and MC allows patients to be in the moment for their final days, surrounded by friends and family, while still being comfortable and relaxed. Isn’t it time that Medical cannabis is embraced as much in death as it is for the living?

In the context of the aging or terminally ill population, the demand for palliative care is rapidly increasing. Generally, people suffering from terminal illnesses go through substantial symptoms and discomfort that often gets worse over time. The common complaints are pain, fatigue, anxiety. dyspnea, anorexia, cachexia, and depression.

How Medical Cannabis Works

Cannabinoids are natural chemicals obtained from the cannabis plant, or they can be manufactured synthetically. They engage with cannabinoid receptors, or they share chemical sameness with endocannabinoids or both. In palliative care medicine,

some cancer symptoms may be modulated via cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2). Some symptoms that can be relieved include pain, mood, appetite, sleep disorders, and nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy.

The usefulness of cannabis in senior care and palliative environments is supported in a study published by PubMed, the National Library of Medicine. This was also the biggest survey, nationally, to date on this particular topic. Of the respondents, a whopping 91% suggested support for utilizing medical cannabis for hospice patients.

Mental Well Being

One of the hardest ailments that patients in palliative care settings face is with their own mental and spiritual wellbeing. In life, knowing that your death card will be pulled is one thing, but knowing for sure that death is only a short time away takes a detrimental toll on one’s overall mental health and outlook. Cannabis offers a mild euphoria, which has shown to be very successful in easing a patient’s mind and spirit when having to come to terms with their prognosis.

Pain Management

One of the primary goals in most hospice settings is to minimize pain. Pain medications such as morphine, fentanyl and opioids have proven to offer pain relief, yet they can leave the patient in a drugged up state, facing side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and severe constipation. There are significant studies as well as anecdotal claims that support cannabis as a pain reliever. Patients can find relief while still being coherent and cannabis doesn’t come with the same side effects as pharmaceuticals!

GI Issues

Gastrointestinal issues such as vomiting, nausea, constipation, and diarrhea are all prevalent symptoms for terminally ill patients. Thankfully, cannabis can help prevent and reduce the severity of them all. It can also help to stimulate appetite, something that is very difficult to do for most patients.

Sensory Enhancement

Cannabis leads to heightened sensory perceptions. It makes things taste and smell better. It makes the world appear brighter, and music sounds better than ever before. This increased perception effect of cannabis can help patients to be able to enjoy the simplest little things up to their last moment. This is something that many advocates and medical professionals believe can help substantially in patients finding a sense of peace in their final days. Help your loved one to have a peaceful, painless, transition and consider embracing cannabis as part of your palliative plan!

Working to Avoid Violations CANNABIS COMPLIANCE

Usually, when I tell people I work in cannabis compliance, they make a funny face or say that they hate that area of expertise. While other industries’ focus on compliance is usually related to finance, cannabis industry compliance is focused on enforcing regulations.

My work in this industry began almost four years ago as an office assistant. I did not have a long-term goal in this industry. Three months into the job, I discovered my passion. My coworker had been showing me METRC, and I was really interested in it. With a background in Computer Science, it did not take very long for me to navigate that software. I fell in love with the system even though I know it still needs some improvement. I was given a chance to shadow my co-worker during harvest on METRC. He told management he thought I was a natural at it and that I should be assigned a new, more challenging task. I was promoted to a compliance assistant and started getting heavily involved in making sure the facility adheres to guidelines as per CCB (Cannabis Control Board) regulations. I went through my first inspection in which we were asked to submit a Plan of Corrections. It was a breeze. At that time, I began to understand why it is so important to keep the company compliant and that my job was very serious. I went through several more routine inspections and it is safe to say that during the duration of my career as a compliance manager, the facilities I managed were safe from trouble. I have been solely focusing on cannabis compliance since then. I have worked in multiple settings, including indoor and outdoor facilities. I am lucky to have been given an opportunity to work independently in the state of Nevada.

Following are some of the most common violations reported in Nevada by the CCB are:

Intentionally Destroying or Concealing Evidence

Intentionally Failing to Pay Taxes to the Department of Taxation

Allowing Persons Under 21 to Enter Cannabis Premises

Failing to Maintain Surveillance Alarm/System

Failing to Maintain a Seed-to-Sale Inventory System

Failure to Maintain Updated Standard Operating Procedures

Selling Cannabis That Had Not Passed the Lab Test

Failure to Tag Cannabis Plants

Failing to Meet Requirement for the Disposal of Cannabis Waste

Violating Advertising Requirements

These violations carry penalties from $2,500 up to $100,000. Facilities face license suspension and agents involved in the cases would also face agent card revocation or worse, be banned from ever working in the industry. Every quarter, there are violation cases being made publicly available by the CCB. You do not want to have the name of your business or your name

there.

Depending on your facility location and nature of business, compliance can look very different. If you are a cannabis distributor, you might spend a lot of time managing and implementing inventory compliance. Outdoor cannabis grow facility has different compliance management compared to an indoor facility.

In the eyes of the public, proper compliance management would also mean safe consumption for them. This is why we have to test every cannabis product to make sure that it can be put on shelves. Products contaminated with molds are dangerous to consumers, especially those who

depend on them for medical purposes. Improper product handling can lead to money being unnecessarily spent. All this can damage your business’ reputation.

Improper handling of cannabis waste can also create problems. Homeless people rummage through the facility’s dumpster. If you don’t have the correct Standard Operating Procedures for cannabis waste, products can fall into the wrong hands or worse, minors. These acts constitute a Category III violation with a civil penalty of not more than $90,000.

It doesn’t matter how much you don’t like it, you are obligated to obey the laws when you sign your agent card paperwork; this is why compliance is important. By properly enforcing it, you would help your company avoid hefty penalties. It will also protect your company from lawsuits. Great compliance management would ensure that the company is being kept on track of the various regulatory requirements and that each one is met. It is also important to make sure everyone at your facility, from license owners to employees understands and implements the rules, even though they don’t handle METRC(a common excuse that I’ve heard). The Nevada CCB and/or local law enforcement can come unannounced, so the compliance manager must always execute proper auditing including conducting various mock inspections with applicable solutions to arising issues. The regulations are ever-changing therefore keeping a facility compliant becomes a dynamic task that requires not only the ability to digest the statutes but also high analytical skills and the patience to put everything into practice. There is no room for error.

You can either hire a good compliance manager or lose your license. The first option is cheaper and much more beneficial.

Cannabis Compliance and Risk Management Certificate Program Now Offered at University of Nevada, Reno

Green Flower (the nation's leader in cannabis education) is bringing a new, comprehensive Cannabis Compliance and Risk Management Certificate Program to top schools across the country, including the University of Nevada, Reno Extended Studies, preparing students to become compliance professionals within this fastevolving cannabis industry.

Seventeen of Green Flower's university partners launched the Cannabis Compliance and Risk Management Certificate Program for their November 2022 cohort, while the University of California Riverside (UCR) will launch the program in Spring 2023.

"The cannabis industry is complex and ever-changing. It can feel incredibly daunting to keep up even if you have been working in it for a long time–and even more so for people just entering the field," said Max Simon, Green Flower CEO and

Co-Founder. "We are thrilled to work with all of our university partners to add this to our existing offerings at each school, providing opportunities for the most robust certifications in all aspects of cannabis as students look to build their careers in the industry."

Legal compliance is a significant challenge for cannabis businesses of all sizes. Constantly shifting laws, heavy-handed compliance requirements, multiple levels of health and safety risks, and difficult challenges throughout the cannabis supply chain are just some of the issues addressed in these courses.

Understanding these risks, and having the knowledge and tools to minimize those risks while ensuring legal compliance, is a top priority for cannabis businesses throughout the industry. Cannabis compliance professionals are some of the most in-demand professionals in the

industry today.

Part of this training includes the industryadopted Cannabis Risk Assessment Framework, which gives students a step-by-step blueprint for becoming a successful cannabis compliance professional. This includes learning how to perform risk assessments on cannabis companies, designing and implementing risk management processes to solve potential issues, establishing compliance policies and procedures that comply with all applicable laws, and training other employees to follow compliance and risk management best practices inside the cannabis industry.

Upon completion of the program, students earn a certificate of completion from the university and a digital badge displaying their skills, preparing them to take the Certified Commercial Cannabis Professional (CCCP) through the Association of Certified Commercial Cannabis Experts (ACCCE).

Students are also granted ACCCE membership for one year when they register for this program, including access to additional resources and training materials designed to help in understanding the complexities and risks of the commercial cannabis industry.

DECEMBER HOROSCOPES

ARIES (MARCH 20 – APRIL 19)

Go easy this month as you’ve been hustling all year long and it’s taking a toll on you. As you slow down, you may notice a flood of thoughts and feelings that have been built up over the past year. These can be prompted by stress about spending time with relatives around the holidays so self care is important. Take time to reflect and work through these emotions with an enjoyable hybrid like the White Chocolate Raspberry strain by BaM. Jupiter enters Aries on December 20th, which will help you get in the groove for social events and putting yourself out there again. It will be a good time to start new ventures after the 20th.

TAURUS (APRIL 19 – MAY 20)

With Venus, Mercury, and eventually the Sun joining Pluto in earthy Capricorn this month, you’ll be feeling grounded and ready to start the new year. Not to mention Uranus, the planet of surprise, is in your sign all month long so expect the unexpected, you may come upon some random rewards for all your hard work throughout the year! It will be easy for you to work through and communicate your feelings providing clarity in relationship issues you’ve had for a while. Ultimately, this month you’ll feel carefree and ready to indulge in all the goodies. We recommend treating yourself to a comfy kush like the Carson City Kush Live Resin Budder by Sacred Oil.

GEMINI (MAY 20 – JUNE 20)

Geminis will have a hard time sitting still this month with all the holiday excitement in the air. However, you may find yourself slowing down and unable to make decisions with Mars retrograde in Gemini all month. The Gemini full moon on the 7th causes you to become easily distracted and mood swingy. It’s ok if you feel like socializing for one minute, but decide to watch a documentary instead. There will be plenty of invites your way and you’ll find yourself sharing many special moments with family and friends. You’ll be in an especially loving and passionate mood, especially if you have a partner. We recommend picking up a pack of tasty Slurricane prerolls by Reina to keep your feet on the ground while you’re out and about.

CANCER (JUNE 20 – JULY 22)

You may be feeling emotionally unstable this month and will need to spend time around loved ones to keep you from being melancholy about your past year. The key is to focus on the future and try not to worry about others. Your subconscious

feelings are heightened by Neptune stationing directly in Pisces on the 3rd so go easy on yourself if it seems like you’re riding an emotional roller coaster. These sensitivities help increase your creativity and allow your empathy to shine. Keep a vape handy like the Blood Orange Disposable by AMA to lift your spirits if you’re feeling down and try not to be too hard on yourself!

LEO (JULY 22 – AUGUST 22)

Leos benefit from the grounded Capricorn energy this month, keeping you calm, cool, and collected while others may be flustered by stress of the holidays. Saturn in Aquarius helps you create structure among the chaos. It will be easy for you to stand out as a leader for your family, friends, and potential partner navigating the holiday events and to do lists. Although you’ll be in good spirits, your imagination keeps your mind running at night and it may be difficult to get some rest. A pack of the 1:1:1 Blackberry Lemonade Pearls by Gron will be exactly what you need to relax and get to sleep.

VIRGO (AUG 22 – SEPT 22)

With Venus, Mercury, and eventually the Sun joining Pluto in earthy Capricorn, you’re slowing down and feeling more introverted. In December, especially after Neptune moves directly in Pisces on the 3rd, you’ll be inspired to enjoy a peaceful, creative activity to relax. Something that you may not have had time or energy for in the past when you were out and about networking. You will feel your best spending intimate time with loved ones over large gatherings which may stress you out. You’ll be drawn to spending the holidays cozy at home. Don’t worry, you’re not missing out on anything but drama. Treat yourself to a feel-good strain like Zoo Dawg by The Grower Circle. At least if you’re not going out, you won’t have to share!

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 23)

You are feeling excited about time with family and friends this month and you can’t wait to connect with everyone throughout the many social gatherings you’re invited to. Don’t get too caught up in the fact that another year has passed. The New Moon in Capricorn on the 23rd is the best time to set intentions to focus on the future instead of dwelling on the past. An uplifting strain like the Miss X by GLP should help! You’re also feeling quite romantic so take time to spend with your crush or loved one and show them you care. If you keep an open mind and stay receptive, thanks to Uranus in Taurus, you may be surprised by unexpected gifts, rewards, or bonuses.

SCORPIO (OCT 23 – NOV 21)

This month brings lots of energy for Scorpios to reach their goals by the end of the year but you may find yourself quite restless. You’ll be exposed to lots of situations, relationships, and behaviors that could bother you if you let them. Try to let things go and focus on inner peace or you could always keep some Blackberry Sangria Syrup by CannaLean around for when you just can’t deal. Mars retrograde in Gemini makes it a good time to reconsider finances and goals for the new year, especially on the New Moon in Capricorn on the 23rd. Although you’ll find yourself having a lot of energy and motivation, you should hold off on pulling the trigger on any big moves.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

This holiday season may be overwhelming Sagittarius, making it a good time to retreat to the mountains or nature if you can. You will be very active and this can cause overthinking things. Especially around family, you may find yourself getting upset and judged by older family members that have different expectations for you. Don’t let it get you down. Enjoy a puff of a Banana OG cartridge by Provisions to take the edge off if you can’t get away from family obligations this month. Although you typically enjoy these gatherings, you may find yourself just not in the mood. Plan a trip to recoup after the holidays so you’re feeling aligned and destressed for the new year.

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)

December is the month that you get to bask in the glory of your accomplishments Capricorn! You’ve planned the year out so that you can enjoy time with family and focus on the new year without being so focused on work. Although you aren’t one for large social gatherings usually, with Mercury in your sign starting on the 6th, you will likely be the center of attention and end up really happy that you joined the party. With the New Moon in Capricorn on the 23rd, you’ll find a fresh start motivating you to start creating your vision for 2023. Since your season is almost here and you’ve worked so hard the past year, treat yourself to something you can savor like the Garlic Cookies Rosin Badder by Mammoth Labs.

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 18)

Live a life of peace and joy this season by staying away from others’ conflicts, especially family. As an Aquarian, you’re usually impulsive and don’t like to be tied down, which is difficult around the holidays when everyone wants a piece of you. A super euphoric CBG edible like the 1:1:1 Caramel Cheeba Chew Trifecta might be the perfect thing to keep you from getting annoyed. If you’re really not feeling it, slip away

discretely before things get too heated or your attitude shows. Instead, spend time with your favorite people to keep you in good spirits. It’s been a demanding year and you deserve to reward yourself!

PISCES (FEB 18 – MAR 20)

You are in good health this month and have a heightened awareness that makes you sensitive to others, especially when Neptune moves directly in Pisces on the 3rd. You will be tuned in to the needs of those around you and in a very nurturing mood. Just be cautious of who you give your energy to. There could be a close friend or family member that has a negative effect on you. Keep your distance from these people or keep a strong vape around to chill you out like the Dark Rainbow Flower Rosin Disposable by CAMP. The creative, dreamy power of Neptune makes it a good time to plan out the next year and where you’d like to see yourself.

Budtender of the Month Las Vegas

Nathaniel Stevens

Budtender at TREE OF LIFE

Nathaniel has been a budtender in Las Vegas since the medical days. When he saw the opportunity to combine two of his passions, cannabis and helping people, he didn’t hesitate to take advantage of it. His laid back attitude and wealth of knowledge makes him a standout in the cannabis community. You can find him at Tree Of Life dispensary in North Las Vegas.

What made you want to join the cannabis industry and what was your first industry job?

I joined the cannabis industry because I saw it as an opportunity to do what I love openly and legally which is cannabis sales. I really wanted to be around like-minded people while helping out the community too. My first industry job was at Sahara Wellness back in 2016, I did some of everything there and learned so much. Over the years since then I’ve worked at The Apothecary Shoppe, Planet 13 and now I’m over at Tree of life in North Las Vegas. Cannabis is definitely my passion.

Have your views/thoughts about cannabis changed since becoming a budtender?

I would say yes. I’ve had the opportunity to work in the industry since it was medical only so working with medical patients as well as adult use customers has taught me that we really are all just using cannabis to improve our quality of life. For that reason I still look at every transaction as a medical one because I know that I’m helping my patients feel better.

What’s the most satisfying part of being a budtender?

To me, the most satisfying thing about being a budtender is I know every single day at work I’m helping people no matter what else happens.

What’s your favorite topic to educate patients on?

I like to inform people on other cannabinoids besides THC because many people don’t understand how much cannabis can really help them achieve the relief they desire in life besides just taking their mind away from it.

Different cannabinoid ratios can help you with pain and recovery or with focus and stimulation or even with intimacy just to list a few.

How have your smoking habits changed since becoming a budtender?

I really used to smoke whatever was available when I first got into the industry because I was accustomed to that from purchasing on the streets. Now I really only consume products that are produced in a clean and ethical manner. I have asthma so I really have no choice, my lungs know the difference these days.

How do you stay up to date and informed on new products and cannabis related news?

I love Vegas Cannabis Magazine as well as Leafly, they never let me down. I’d have to say my number one source is the streets though. I’m constantly asking patients as well as fellow budtenders what’s hot so I know what to try next.

What do you think budtenders need more of to make the job easier/ better?

I think budtenders need more owners that truly love the culture of cannabis, not just the money from it. These days it seems like corporate cannabis is taking over. I’m blessed now to work at a dispensary that does amazing things for the community and it feels great to be a part of that.

What’s your favorite way to consume?

My first love was blunt smoking but these days I’ve switched over to dabbing mostly and I love edibles too. My E-Rigs are my life, shout out to the Huni Badger and Dr Dabber for keeping me right!

What have you been smoking on?

I was totally blown away by the Pink Lychee by Green Life Productions and I can’t wait for the next drop.

Budtender of the Month Las Vegas

smoking, and I now smoke more cannabis than ever.

How do you stay up to date and informed on new products?

What made you want to join the cannabis industry and what was your first industry job?

This is my first industry job. I was a preschool director for the last ten years, that was my one and only job since I was 18. I needed something new and fun, and with less obligation of running a business.

NASHONE GREENE

Have your views/thoughts about cannabis changed since becoming a budtender?

It has further validated my views that all walks of life consume cannabis, be it medically or recreationally. I really do believe that if everyone dropped the opioids/ prescription medicine and consumed only cannabis, the world would be a better place.

What’s the most satisfying part of budtending?

I love people, all people, all kinds of people! I’m taking care of hundreds of customers a week and it’s fun to get to know everyone. Be it the daily conversation with regulars, or someone breezing through the dispensary on a road trip that I’ll never see again.

What do you think budtenders need more of to make the job easier/better?

How do you stay educated and up to date on products and industry news?

Nashone Greene might be one of the hardest working individuals in the cannabis industry. Even though he has multiple hustles, budtending at Exhale Dispensary is what brings him the most joy. His work ethic and hunger for more has made him a top performer and a superstar in the making.

My favorites are Srene, LIT, Matrix, Nuleaf, and Cannavative.

Do you prefer a high THC content or a really good terpene profile?

I follow a lot of companies on social media. And attend cannabis events. I see daily what new products are coming out. Also being in cultivation gives me a bit more insight. As far as changes and news the industry.

It’s nice when you can find both! Low THC (22-23%) with double digit terps always gives me the effect I’m looking for.

What do you look for when you are purchasing products for yourself?

What have you been smoking on?

What’s your favorite topic you like to educate patients on? Cliche, but, terpenes. Terps steer your high to what is suitable for you. Super important to know what terps are most agreeable to you!

What motivated you to join the cannabis industry? Learning the medical aspect of it made me wanna get into it. I was a medical patient before it was recreational. So I started helping friends with home grows and extractions. Then I wanted to further my knowledge and that’s when I decided to join the industry.

Bubblebath and Georgia Pie by LIT. Fruity P for an evening high, and savoring the last bit of Shortbread Cookies by Cannavative.

I look for specific brands, THC and terpene profiles. When comes to products I’ve never tried, I’m willing to try anything.

Has your smoking habits changed since becoming a budtender? Are you more selective of what you smoke?

Definitely! I feel at first everyone thought of cannabis as just weed. Just smoke and get high. But then the more educated I got, I learned about THC and terpenes and what I liked best.

How have your smoking habits changed since becoming a budtender?

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned since becoming a budtender?

They have stayed consistent in my regiment of

How loyal customers are to products and brands. And how brands take care of the bud-tenders, as far as product knowledge and experience.

What’s your favorite way to consume?

As I always say, “ a dab a day will take the pain away”. Dabs all day, folks! And you can never go wrong with a nice hand rolled J. Also, I do like to have some edibles on the side as snack.

Ruby Pearl Co

Brings Terp Pearls to Nevada

Founded in 2018 by an ambitious glassblower, Ruby Pearl Co is a retail e-commerce, wholesale, and distribution company in Reno, Nevada which specializes in terp pearls and popular glass accessories. They carry a wide variety of glass artists and brands, as well as distribute to over 500-plus smoke shops worldwide!

Previously working in local glass shops such as The Cave in San Mateo, California and Art Dogs and Grace in Reno, Nevada, the owners have a great understanding of the glass industry as a whole.

Ruby Pearl Co is also partnered with Campfire Quartz to provide quality quartz products at an affordable price.

Why Use Terp Pearls?

Terp Pearls are used to add extra heat retention and surface area for your concentrates. This will provide better flavor for your concentrates to enhance your vaporizing experience.

How Do I Use Terp Pearls?

Drop your Pearls inside of your quartz. Heat up your quartz with a butane torch.

Wait about 1 minute and 15 seconds or until you reach your desired temperature and consume as usual. A spinner carb cap is a great way to keep your Pearls moving around and a temperature gun can help with desired temps.

Why Ruby or Sapphire Instead of Glass or Quartz?

Unlike glass and quartz, lab grown ruby and sapphire Terp Pearls are known for their superior heat retention. This allows for a lower temperature, longer lasting experience, and optimal flavor delivery.

Terp Pearls are sold in a variety of sizes ranging from 3 mm up to 12mm. Each size Terp Pearl is used for a different purpose: 3mm4mm are used for vaporizers like the Puffco or Carta. 5mm-6mm are used for quartz bangers. And 8mm-12mm are used for slurper style bangers.

You can find these products in a variety of local stores throughout Nevada as well as inside big name dispensaries like Planet 13 in Las Vegas. To find these products near you, use the store locator at rubypearlco.com/pages/store-locator.

How Cannabis Changed Throughout My Life: From Medical Patient to Former Consumer

*Editor’s Note: This article is from the point of view of the author based on their individual experience and personal account connected to a specific condition and advice from their medical doctor. Please note, Vegas Cannabis Magazine does not advocate or oppose the opinions expressed in this article. Thank you!

When I was 15 years old, I had my first hit of “stress” from my homie Deondre. We were hanging out at one of our friend’s houses, and he passed it to me so I tried it. I didn’t care for it then. We didn’t have the potency there is nowa-days, not even close! It wasn’t until I turned 18 years old, that my relationship with cannabis began. By then, there were better quality strains that were more commonly accessible. Strains like GDP, Sour Diesel, Northern Lights, White Widow, or one of my all time favoritesLouis XIII. Those are the classic strains that you can’t find anymore. Back then potency wasn’t tested so it was hard to determine the strength. Quality was based upon appearance, taste, smell, burn, and the “high.” Every year I would renew my California Medical Recommendation to protect myself, have access to quality cannabis, and to have the advantage of an array of infused products.

Around 2015 I became extremely interested in the medicinal benefits of cannabis, so I began researching every day. I was on an endless pursuit to learn everything I could about the plant and its medicinal compounds. I was specifically intrigued with its potential to treat ailments, disease, and disorders. The plant has so much potential with certain treatments, it is mind blowing to witness how the effects can alter the trajectory of a disease or disorder. Cannabis has significant promise when used properly and not abused.

I have been a high-frequency consumer for close to 20 years. Earlier this February, I discontinued using cannabis for 2 weeks, to see if I would improve with the lack of focus and concentration I was experiencing. I noticed the symptoms that I had been enduring were similar to ADHD. Since testing for ADHD is a

lengthy process in today's failed healthcare system, I figured that meanwhile, I’d try to eliminate any variables that may be exhibiting these symptoms. So, I stopped using cannabis for 2 weeks. Which I didn't know then, is actually the worst thing that you can do. You basically shock the brain when you stop cold turkey. Just like any drug, tapering off is always best when attempting to discontinue use. It must be treated just like any other medication. During those 2 weeks, I only used a 1:1 ratio of CBG: CBD alone maybe twice during those two weeks. However, the day I decided to consume after those 2 weeks had passed, I took an edible (I didn't take edibles often, as they metabolize differently in my body so I am only able to tolerate minimal dosages). A few hours later, I took a second 10mg gummy. Forgetting that I had taken the first one a couple of hours prior. Then, I took about a .03 gram dab from the puffco of a hybrid badder. About 30 minutes later, I was in hell. I never experienced such panic as I did at that moment. The panic then led to extreme discomfort, which induced into psychosis. The thoughts in my head were not normal. I had never experienced such negative thoughts ever before. My partner was sleeping next to me so I didn't know what to do with myself. I didn't feel comfortable sitting, laying down, or going to sleep, as I thought I wouldn't wake up. So, as usual, when I felt uncomfortable, I tried to take a shower. It still wouldn't go away. I cried and let the water hit me, and kept telling myself I am okay. I prayed non-stop for it to go away. After a duration of about 2-3 hours or so of the psychosis episode, I finally fell asleep. I woke up and I knew things wouldn't be the same. That day on, I only smoked CBD and CBG flower. I no longer smoked extracts (concentrates). Once and a while I would mix THC 25% to 75% CBD: CBG flower in a joint or bowl. That was the most I would consume. Then in June 2022, while sitting with my new psychiatrist, I told her the entire story. She asked if I was still consuming, and I told her the amounts (THC 25%:CBD/ CBG 75% ratio) that I had been using rarely, but that I was still consuming CBD: CBG flower daily. I believe I only included THC twice after

the 2 weeks, leading up to my visit with her 2 months later. She looked me in my eyes, got serious, and said, " I beg you, please do not consume any more cannabis. I work in a psych ward outside of my practice at this office. If I'm not here, I'm there. And I can honestly tell you that every patient in there that has had long-term, high-frequency cannabis use that has also experienced psychosis continues to have psychosis episodes. Once you experience psychosis, and you keep consuming, you can continue to experience it more frequently. Then, it very likely becomes permanent. I have schizophrenic patients who refuse to discontinue use, and they all started with a psychosis episode, just like what happened to you. I beg you, please stop using it now. You have to use your brain for work just like I do. You are very smart, you're going to do great things for mental health. Please, I beg you to stop." It was at that very moment that I realized that if I do not take advice from a seasoned, skilled professional in my field of study, I would just be completely ignorant, and I refuse to allow anything to end me that way. I am now over 6 months clean from cannabis use. I have completely discontinued using all cannabinoids. I only use a topical that I make, for pain when needed. I may have experienced some irritability and anxiety withdrawals during the first 2 months or so. Although, I didn't learn until my drugs and behavior class (at UNLV) that my brain was addicted. Even though I could stop for days or weeks of not consuming consecutively, I still had dreams for the first few months where I was consuming. Which is the sign of addiction with any substances or behaviors. Hence, my brain developed an addiction.

I can honestly say that I feel the difference now without cannabis consumption, and that my mind has opened up to the downside of how long-term, high-frequency cannabis use effects can induce negative nascent.

Cannabis Infused Mimosa Bar for your New Year's Celebrations

This year I have talked with more and more of my canna family that expressed they want to ditch the alcohol this year and instead replace it with some delicious mocktails infused with cannabis. I thought why not have an interactive experience at the same time to spice it up a bit. I personally cannot wait to delight my guests this year with a very beautiful assorted menu of tasty flavored mimosas. Here are some great Ideas for you to do the same.

INGREDIENTS:

• Your favorite CBD 1-4 dropper bottles (or some 1:3 1:4 ratio THC-CBD tinctures if you'll have guest that want to enjoy THC)

• 5 cans of sparkling water or wine

• A bottle of vodka and/or banana liquor (optional)

• Fruits for garnish like strawberries, lemon, oranges, blueberries, and raspberries

• 1 quart of 3-4 juices such as orange juice, blood orange juice, tangerine juice or apple juice

PREPARATION:

Make your mimosa bar: Prepare a nice looking ice bucket for your bottles of Sparkling wine or cans of bubbles. Place your juices in various pitchers, labeling the contents (be sure to specify which tinctures are THC so a guest does not have a bad experience - it’s nice to have these on ice as well. You can get creative and fancy with the labels making signs for each dropper with suggested info and juice pairing ideas and doses. Set out small jars or glasses and a small liquid measuring cup or two for guests to use.

Make a variety of citrus fruit garnishes, like pinwheels, slices, twists and peels, and set them out in small bowls for your guest to choose from. Letting the guests garnish their own cocktail.

A good juice-to-bubbles ratio for a mimosa is 1:3 or 1:4.Place a nice menu if you’d like with multiple recipes the guests can try and also instruct your guests to put ⅓ or ¼ cup of juice in their 8oz glass and top the rest off with bubbles. Then they can choose their strain and drop 5-10 drops of tincture in their glass, depending on desired dosage. This is sure to be a hit at any cannabis friendly party. Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

TIPS:

You can switch up any of the ingredients to satisfy your guest list. Be creative and fun. I would designate an area and add lights and decorations to get EXTRA fancy.

Christmas "Green" Apple Pie

What’s up all you Stoner’s and Stonette’s! I hope you enjoyed the last recipe because that beast was absolutely delicious. A nice mellow high, tastes like chocolate too. Especially after squeezing a little lemon juice on top. Crazy what can happen with coffee and fish huh? Gotta love this thing I call, “Cannecular Gastronomy.” This month I’m making an infused apple pie that truly, ‘Hits the Spot’...So now let’s get to it and I hope you all have a phenomenal Christmas.

Ingredients:

1 bag of Granny Smith apples

1 pack of pre-made pie crusts (2pcs.)

½ cup of brown sugar

½ cup infused canna sugar

3 oz of Torani apple syrup

1 oz ground nutmeg

1 oz ground cinnamon

1 stick canna butter

aluminum foil

1 lemon 1 egg

INSTRUCTIONS:

Start by slicing 5-6 apples into thin slices. Place into a large bowl. Add all of the apple syrup, half of both your sugars, and about 1 Tbsp of both cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix everything thoroughly and then mix in your lemon juice. Put this to the side and grab a pie pan. Preheat your oven to 225 degrees while you’re at it.

Coat the pie pan with some of your canna butter. Open up the premade pie crust and place it into your buttered pie pan making sure to press the crust onto the bottom and against the edges (Do not cut any edges yet.) Take the apple mixture and start placing your apples like in the photo. Don’t worry if there is syrup, sugar, or juices leftover. Take the leftovers and add just a little water to the mixture. Not a lot, just enough to maybe put a little here and there in your pie (save some for later.)

Grab your egg and whisk it in a small bowl, using a brush, wipe the egg completely around the rim of your pan. Place the second pie crust over the top. Cut any excess around the pan. Now with a fork, start pressing around the rim of the pie pan to seal everything inside. This step is important. Taking the rest of your egg, brush the top of your pie while putting a couple little holes in the top. Sprinkle some cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar on top. Cover with aluminum foil and place into the oven for 45 minutes.

While you wait, take some of the leftover syrup/sugar/lemon mixture and put it in a saucepan. On medium/low start to caramelize the mixture. Add a little water if you need to. Save for later once you get a nice consistency. After cooking for 45 minutes, pull off the aluminum foil and drizzle a little of the syrup mixture you created. Cook for 10-15 more minutes and test with a toothpick to see that the apples and dough have been thoroughly cooked. Pull out of the oven once everything is finished cooking and drizzle with some more of your infused apple syrup. Let rest for 15 minutes. There you have it! A delicious and very potent apple pie for the holidays. You can add some ice cream, some whipped cream or both. Either way you have a great pie, that gets you HIGH!

I hope you all enjoyed this recipe as I have enjoyed creating it for you. This is something that just might help you get through the holidays or make you look good at a Christmas party with friends. If you end up making some of your own please share online and tag me so I can see your creations.
