President’s Message...Cherie Wood October has been a very busy month! We ended September coming off the National Federation of Republican Women convention in Louisville, KY and by October 11th, we were having our Nevada Federation of Republican Women convention here in Las Vegas at the beautiful Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino. Thank you to all the delegates representing Active Republican Women that weekend: Barbara Altman, Martha Kimpel, Stephanie Reeder, Kristene Fisher, Priscilla Campbell, Tricia Trowbridge, Brenda Flank, Melody Howard, Eleanor Mills, Lee Price, Molly Governs, Saroj Singh, Kathy Slaughter and State Assemblywoman Michele Fiore. ARW member and State Senator Barbara Cegavske also helped participate in Michele's absence. The convention details and program was brought to the federation under the shear perseverance of the NvFRW Southern Director, our own Maureen "Mo" Karas. As a result of Mo's painstaking planning, and a great deal of help from Barbara Altman and last minute Acting President Sherry Dilley, the convention was a great success! For all of Mo's efforts, the federation voted to honor her with a resolution in her name. She is now part of our federation history of resolutions which signifies the full appreciation of the federation membership. A job well done, Mo! Thank You! Another resolution of recognition was given to outgoing Regents Chair Kay Butchko who has just recently moved back to Texas-we'll miss you Kay! I know the Regent's program will never be the same nor accomplish the great success due to your outstanding leadership! The culmination of the convention was the election of our new NvFRW board for the 2014 -2015 term. Please join me in congratulating: President---Carol Del Carlo 1st Vice President---Daryll Ann Carter-Suliman 2nd Vice President---Mendy Elliott Secretary---Janet Freixas Treasurer---Virginia Starrett Northern Director---Linda Colavecchio Southern Director---Virginia Bear Finnegan Nominating Committee Chair---Paula Farrell Continued on page 5... 3

President’s Message Continued from page 3

The month continued with a great membership meeting bringing together our two candidates for Lt. Governor, State Senator Mark Hutchison and Former State Senator and Former Nevada State Republican Party Chair, Sue Lowden. It was quite a coup for our 1st VP, Diane Welch who arranged the question and answer forum as each candidate described their strengths, contributions and goals if elected to represent the state of Nevada. Kuddos Diane!! Last but certainly not least--Annette Barnes and Patricia Derrick's cooperative USO "Dancing with the Troops" was a great event!! So much effort and creativity went into making the evening so very nice. I truly hope ARW will join with the USO staff in making the event an annual affair! Thank you, Annette and Thank You, Patricia for all you did for this event! As a result, your loving care and great respect for our active duty servicemen, servicewomen and veterans was so very evident that night. I was truly honored to have been a part of a great evening along with the other ARW members who attended and even more so to be your President!! Thank you all!

Literacy...Molly Governs ARW Literacy The ARW Literacy Committee offers a chance for members to spread our Republican values within our community. I would encourage anyone who has a few minutes to contact me, Molly Governs, via email for a few helpful hints on doing volunteer reading in our local schools or day care centers. My email address is Put “ARW Literacy” in the subject heading. Your neighborhood school will most certainly have a need for guest readers. Just call their office and talk to the school’s volunteer coordinator or the principal. The ARW Literacy is always looking for donations of elementary school level books to give to needy schools in the Las Vegas Valley. Also, books of any type for our Veterans are also welcome. The books can be gently used or new. Molly Governs Literacy/MELP Chair

18th President: Ulysses S. Grant (1869-1877) Political Party: Republican

Ulysses S. Grant was born in 1822, the son of an Ohio tanner. He reluctantly attended West Point Military Academy, fought in the Mexican War in the 1840’s, and quietly returned to the life of an unassuming clerk in his father’s leather goods store in Galena, Illinois. At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, Grant was called back to active duty by the Illinois governor to command an unruly local regiment. After whipping this undisciplined rabble into an effective fighting unit fit for combat, Grant had risen to the rank of brigadier general of volunteers in 1861. After a series of hard-fought battles in the early years of the war, whether won or lost, Grant demonstrated an inherent acumen for tenacity in combat where other Union commanders consistently faltered. At the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862, Grant fought one of the bloodiest battles of the war and came out less well. President Lincoln, exasperated by the Union Army’s lack of decisive victories, fended off demands for Grant’s immediate removal citing, “I cannot spare this man. He fights.” After Lincoln appointed him General-in-Chief in March, 1864, Grant relentlessly fought on to subsequently accept General Lee’s surrender in April 1865. Although a man of uncontestable honesty and integrity, Grant as President found himself in compromising situations that tested his judgment and swayed the opinion of many. Gold speculation scandals and the continuation of the doctrine of Radical Reconstruction plagued his two-term administration to near ineffectiveness. After retiring from the Presidency, Grant became a partner in a financial firm that quickly went bankrupt, leaving his virtually penniless. About that time, he was diagnosed with throat cancer, and he feverishly devoted his remaining days penning his memoirs to provide for his family when he died. Soon after completing the final chapter, Grant died in 1885. His works were a resounding success.

Caring for American Soldiers... Patricia Derrick ARW CARING FOR THE TROOPS COMMITTEE PROJECTS: November 21, 2013 ARW Monthly Meeting Sponsored by Caring for the Troops Committee Program Agenda:

USO Las Vegas: When a Soldier Returns Home, What Does He/She Need From the Community? Doug Bradford, USO Las Vegas Director: Mission of the USO How does the USO help soldier returning home after deployment: Why is the new USO in Terminal One so critical to the mission of the USO? How did the US government sequester affected the USO Las Vegas? How is the USO moving forward to fund the future of the USO? How can businesses take part in helping the USO? (3-year plan) How can the Las Vegas Community take part in helping the USO? And finally, we extend our gratitude to ARW members who contribute each month. We marvel at your generosity. Let’s keep it up in 2014 USO DONATIONS AT MONTHLY ARW MEETINGS ARW MEMBERS: Below is a message from USO Las Vegas to all donors and that includes each of you who have donated toiletries (small person items: toothbrushes, paste, lotion, soap etc.). Let's keep it coming. These items are greatly needed and sincerely appreciated. Bring your next donation to the October monthly meeting.

Message from Doug Bradford, Director, USO Las Vegas, McCarran Airport: Thank you very much for your 2013 contributions to USO Las Vegas. Since we opened our doors on Veterans Day in November 2010, the USO Las Vegas Center at McCarran Airport has served nearly 95,000 service members, including their dependents, and guests. The smiles on the faces of those who visit us are priceless. Many visitors comment that USO Vegas is the best USO they have ever visited. That's a testament to the Las Vegas community, our volunteers and to you, our donors who support our functions and help USO Las Vegas promote its mission of serving those who serve our country. Your donations enable the troops at McCarran International Airport to find comfort and respite in a setting that is a true "Home Away From Home". Our center is designed so those serving our country, present and past, can take a break, rest, relax and have a little fun while awaiting their next airline flight. It is a bright and welcoming facility, and our programs are tailored to meet the ever changing needs of our service men and women, as well as their families. Community support of the USO Las Vegas is vital to the success of our facility and extremely important to our military and the USO. Again, we greatly appreciate your generous gifts. Respectfully yours, Doug Bradford, Center Director, USO Las Vegas.

TOYS FOR NELLIS ARW Las Vegas is conducting a "Toys for Nellis" donation drive for Nellis Air Force Base families. These toys will be welcomed at the December ARW monthly meeting at Spanish Trails. It may seem a little early but it's never too early to add this wonderful event to your Christmas list. We look forward to your toys for families of Nellis soldiers. Thank you in advance for joining us in this effort. Sincerely, Patricia Derrick, "Caring for Soldiers" ARW Chairman. 11

New ARW Reserved Table Policy The ARW board has voted to adopt a formal policy regarding reserved tables at our monthly meetings. Effective October 1, 2013 a full table can be reserved if all RSVP's are paid through our online PayPal system or a check mailed and received 2 days prior to each monthly meeting. If any member requests a reserved table of 10, all seats must be paid for in advance. I'm certain all ARW members will respect the fairness of this policy. The board feels this will allow for a more welcoming environment for our guests and new members. With that said, the board really encourages a timely RSVP to our monthly meetings and payment in advance in order to allow the staff at Spanish Trails Country Club to provide the expert service for which their establishment is well known. To do less, is to deprive them from performing at their very best. Thank you all for continuing to make Active Republican Women of Las Vegas GREAT! Cherie Wood, President

WE'VE FIGURED HIM OUT! By Ben Stein Why was President Barack Obama in such a hurry to get his socialized medicine bill passed? Because he and his cunning circle realize some basic truths: The American people in their unimaginable kindness and trust voted for a pig in a poke in 2008. (Pig in a poke means: an offering or deal that is foolishly accepted without being examined first. A poke means sack.) They wanted so much to believe Barack Obama was somehow better and different from other ultra-leftists that they simply took him on faith. They ignored his anti-white writings in his books. They ignored his quiet acceptance of hysterical anti-American diatribes by his minister, Jeremiah Wright. They ignored his refusal to explain years at a time of his life as a student. They ignored his ultra-left record as a "community organizer," Illinois state legislator, and Senator. The American people ignored his total zero of an academic record as a student and teacher, his complete lack of scholarship when he was being touted as a scholar. Now, the American people are starting to wake up to the truth. Barack Obama is a super likeable, super leftist, and not a fan of this country.

The American people have already awakened to the truth that the stimulus bill -- a great idea in theory -- was really an immense bribe to Democrat interest groups, and in no way helped ALL Americans. The American people already know that Mr. Obama's plan to lower health costs while expanding coverage and bureaucracy is a myth, a promise of something that never was and never can be -"a bureaucracy lowering costs in a free society." Either the costs go up or the free society goes away... an historical truth. Now, we face a devastating loss of freedom at home in health care. It will be joined by controls on our lives to "protect us" from global warming, itself largely a fraud, if believed to be caused by man. Hillary has also signed on to a Small Firearms Treaty at the U.N. This is a back door gun control move. If this is approved by the Senate and a 2nd Amendment majority doesn't exist in the Senate now. It will supersede all U.S. Law and the 2nd Amendment. All citizen possession will be eliminated through confiscation. Just Like Great Britain and Australia . Mr. Obama knows Americans are getting wise and will stop him if he delays at all in taking away our freedoms. There is his urgency and our opportunity. Once freedom is lost, America is lost. Wake up, beloved America . Ben Stein is a writer, economist, and lawyer. He writes "Ben Stein's Diary," for every issue of The American Spectator.

A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government." -- George Washington 13

I am a Republican because…

I believe the strength of our nation lies with the individual and that each person’s dignity, freedom, ability and responsibility must be honored.

I believe in equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, sex, age or disability

I believe free enterprise and encouraging individual initiative have brought this nation opportunity, economic growth and prosperity.

I believe government must practice fiscal responsibility and allow individuals to keep more of the money they earn.

I believe the proper role of government is to provide for the people only those critical functions that cannot be performed by individuals or private organizations and that the best government is that which governs least.

I believe the most effective, responsible and responsive government is government closest to the people.

I believe Americans must retain the principles that have made us strong while developing new and innovative ideas to meet the challenges of changing times.

I believe Americans value and should preserve our national strength and pride while working to extend peace, freedom and human rights throughout the world.

Finally, I believe the Republican Party is the best vehicle for translating these ideals into positive and successful principles of government.
